Birthday celebration at the Study Hall Rooftop Lounge... We very much enjoyed the firepit and skyline views! The evening was beautiful. Our server Yuki made the night special from beginning to end, with her bright smile, sparkling energy and many special touches, singing with candles, pie and champagne She was very attentive, brought blankets and helped everyone to stay warm. We tried the Berkeley Restaurant week special menu which was tasty with nice design, along w/ bar food such as brussel sprouts, garlic fries, calamari, fish & chips. Liked the fish tacos. Overall, the food choices could be improved by adding healthier options. All in all, it was a great evening. A suggestion would be to extend the reservation time for the firepit or offer a transition to another area/table if a new reservation arrives. It felt a bit rushed, understanding it is a novel experience and thus in demand. It was a stellar time and Yuki was the shining star of the evening. read more

I'll give an honest review: The good: We arrived after the UCLA/CAL football game. The place was nearly empty. The hostess was great. Very nice, very patient as we changed our minds from an inside to an outside table. Woman in her 30's, dark hair, wish I would have obtained her name to give her credit, because she was dynamite. The atmosphere is pretty cool. We dined outside. There are no heaters, one fireplace, but the night was semi-warm, so it was nice. You can see for miles. There was a jazz trio playing in the bushes along side the dining area. Overall, the atmosphere was great. The food was excellent. We had an Asian chicken salad, Baja shrimp tacos, and sliders. All of the dishes were very good. We had handcrafted cocktails and beer, and all of the beverages were spot-on. The bad: The service was terrible. A girl named Milu was our waitress....well, when we could find her. She made rare appearances at our table. We usually went to find her when we wanted something. Too bad for the restaurant, we were in no hurry, up from Southern California, and probably would have ordered a few more rounds of cocktails, but she was MIA most of the night. After a sizeable wait, our food was delivered to the wrong table....and they accepted and ate it!!! Which meant we had to wait even longer for our food to arrive. We literally ordered before these people were seated. They sat, ordered their own meals a few moments later, and then the food was delivered to them within minutes. Each item that was set on their table was an item we had ordered right down to the special requests such as items on the side, etc. No doubt it was our food. Good for them for accepting it...otherwise they would have had a long wait too. The terrible and the reason for a one-star rating: Our bill came. We were a party of seven, my wife and I, our adult kids, and their significant others. I picked up the tab. It was expensive, over $300, but it is a hotel restaurant so I expected as much. Milu never told me that she had already added the tip. I took the check, without thinking, added a tip, and submitted it. On the way back to the hotel, it dawned on me that the check seemed a bit high, even for hotel dining. I took a look and saw that Milu had already added a $50.60 tip to the bill. I had added $45 on top of that without realizing what I was actually doing. i scanned their menu to determine if there was something that said gratuities will be added to parties of six or more. There is not. I immediately called the restaurant to have them cancel the second tip (I am a high tipper, but $95 for crappy service....I don't think so). No one answered the phone so I left a message. The next morning I emailed the restaurant. Still no response. When I got home the following day I found they had ran the charge through my credit card company with both tips. I emailed the parent company to let them know what had happened. I also phoned the restaurant again, and left a voice message for the manager, Bruce. To date, I am out the second tip, and no one had returned a phone call or email. BE CAREFUL EATING HERE, THEY WILL SNEAK A TIP ON THE BILL.....AND NOT TELL YOU THEY HAVE DONE SO....WHEN YOU TRY TO CORRECT THE DOLLAR AMOUNT TO BE CHARGED, THEY WILL IGNORE YOU. Next up, have to go through the hassle of having American Express dispute the charges. read more

Berkeley is in dire need of more establishments like this one. The moment you step inside, a nice environment with great music welcomes you, setting the perfect tone for a night out. They offer delicious cocktails that are well-crafted and quite refreshing. When it comes to the food, it is good but not outstanding. I must say, though, that I enjoyed my meal (Brussels Sprouts and Burger). However, I can't help but feel that there's room for improvement when it comes to their menu variety. Berkeley is known as a foodies' delight, and it would be great to see this spot embrace that culture fully. Specifically, they could benefit from offering more vegetarian and vegan options to cater to the diverse dietary preferences of their patrons. As for their drink selection, I believe there's an opportunity to expand here too. Incorporating a better range of choices (e.g. wine and beer) would appeal to a broader audience and bring in more potential customers. The cherry on top of my experience here was the fantastic view. It truly enhanced the dining experience, making me appreciate this place even more. A few heater might make it even better. All in all, this restaurant has great potential; some tweaks in the menu and drinks department could elevate it into one of Berkeley's must-visit spots. read more

First off, Study Hall absolutely exceeded my expectations of your typical rooftop lounge. It all started with our hostess. She was very energetic and enthusiastic when she greeted us and escorted us to our table. There, we met our hostess. He was also very pleasant, informative, and hospitable the entire night. The bar tenders were very quick when it came to taking our orders and serving spectacular drinks. Then the food came out, and that's where I was blown away. Not only was the presentation on point, but the food tasted amazing. Let's not forget the amazing live band that was killing it the entire night. I went with my fiancée and we had to wait 20 minutes for a table even though the place was virtually empty. Then when we finally got seated we waited for 15 minutes before even meeting our server and had to ask the hostess who our server was. Then our ticket got lost somehow so we waited another 30 minutes to be served. The fries tasted like fish so I can tell they were fried in the same oil and thankfully neither of us are allergic to fish. Now we're talking. But it was too little too late, and the service was lackluster enough to make me not want to return. I decided not to put them on blast and instead wrote to them privately. I rarely write negative reviews but for this place I have to. The view from the outdoor part of Study Hall is grand. Especially in the daytime. That's the only good thing I can say about the place. We waited 55 minutes and were never offered the chance to order anything, including even a simple cocktail. When we went inside to order from the bar directly, we were told that we had to order from a server outside. We finally got a nod, "I'm coming signal" from a server who wandered off and never returned. Half our party left and we moved inside to try our luck there. We flagged a waiter who started explaining how to read the qr menu to which my friend (genuinely politely) replied that we were ready to order having been there over an hour. No polite "sorry for the wait" or "we're understaffed" or "we're slammed" reply even just a friendly glance. Just a vaguely irritated look. This was followed by an awful plate of nachos (almost inedible and how hard is it to make nachos?!) and an utterly bland cocktail that seemed to have been liberated from actual alcoholic content for $16. (Oh, and if you plan to go late and sit outside, bring a duffel bag. There are no heat lamps.) read more

What a missed opportunity here! the only rooftop bar in a new hotel in Berkeley has a great panoramic view and that's it. The lighting is bright white LED's that makes it seem like a cafeteria- aesthetics The staff chased us around telling us not to sit at any of the open table bc they were reserved. The outdoor space is great but if you've been to the Bay Area before you'll know it is often windy and cold and there are no heat lamps but two tables with fire pits so people were bundled up in blankets but it was impossible for us to sit outside bc it was too cold. I noticed At least 2 TV's playing TNT Not sure what's going on here but the vibe is not good. Oh they did have a great jazz band jamming in the blazing white LED light- they were good but I felt bad that it wasn't a great set up for music. We ordered one drink that was meh- not sure about the food but I don't think I would order based on the rest of the experience. Sorry ya'll practicing radical honesty. Serious attitude adjustment and trainining needed in how to work with people - condescending, passive aggressive and not fit for this work. Went on a cold Thursday night and there were fewer than 10 parties in the whole place. Despite the fact that it wasn't busy, the waiter basically didn't wait on us. It took him 15 minutes to take our order, he checked our IDs, gave us attitude, and never came back when we finished our drinks. We tried really hard to get his attention but it seemed like we were being actively avoided. After an hour and a half we left and went to a nearby bar with much better ambiance and service. The food and drinks at Study Hall are decent but overpriced. The interesting view doesn't make the bad service or expensive food worth it. read more

Goodness gracious, this restaurant is not ready to be open. We came to Study Hall to enjoy the warm sun and rooftop views but the host said that the only tables available were inside. Not because there weren't any tables, but because the servers outside couldn't handle any more new guests. Those were his words. No big deal, truly. He sat us by a window inside where we could look out toward the Oakland/ Emeryville skyline. We sat down, and stayed sat for almost 20 minutes before someone came. She apologized for the wait, and asked if she could put anything in for us. We ordered drinks and made sure to put our food in as well, to offset anymore waiting. After another 30 minutes our food came out, to which I ordered another appetizer and we reminded our server that we had ordered drinks. She said they only had 1 bartender so the drinks would take a second. This is after other parties had come in, gotten their drinks and sat outside. I saw another party of two come in, sit down, and leave due to not being served. Finally after an hour since we had ordered our drinks, and just as I was taking my last bite of food, our drinks were dropped off on our table. No word, no apology for the wait. Mind you these were the only times she came to our table, in a restaurant that was not busy at all. Our drinks were an Aperol spritz, and a Kombucha spritz, not craft cocktails, nothing fancy. It was a very disappointing experience. The price of the food and drinks, were not reflective of their quality. I would save yourself the trouble and find a more established venue if you're looking to have a nice rooftop dining experience. read more

A rooftop bar in Berkeley!!! Only one I know of, and it's long overdue. We went on a Thursday (with a reservation) and sat by one of the fire pits which was great. Lovely views, really great food (we ordered a lot of things, I think the burger/sliders was my favorite). Really delicious cocktails, good wine list, etc. Staff/service was friendly and attentive. Looking forward to going back when they open up for brunch! Oh, and I forgot to mention they have live music! I think it's most weeknight evenings, and definitely on the weekends. read more

I really want to love this place and have it be my new go-to spot, but... Why no heaters on the patio?? This is Berkeley. It's frequently windy and cold. Outdoor heaters (available at many other dining establishments, but none with so nice a view) transform a miserable chilly evening into a comfortable experience that makes us want to linger and order another round. My friends and I will be sitting outside exclusively for the foreseeable future. So many people have mentioned this in their reviews, but the business owner hasn't yet responded. We were excited to try this place. The view is fun. But we were seated right by a door that was wide open to the outdoor deck. We saw blankets outside but none were offered inside. When we asked if we could move (to ANY open table; there were many), as we were cold, our waiter acted put out. Some waitstaff seemed great but our waiter was curt and rude. For example, in response to a simple question as to whether tofu could be the protein choice for the rice bowl, he told us "it says right on the menu what the three options are". (There are digital menus only and we had everything else in our order memorized.) We were really surprised and, unfortunately, just wanted our meal to be over as a result. read more

All I asked was if we could sit outside (normal question at a bar?) and she tries to dissuade me and says it's cold. I said that's okay can we use the blankets? She says no they are cheap and dirty. The 2 hostess gave me conflicting information when it turned out after 9 you can just sit outside and don't need to check in. Horrible service, very very rude. The young women with brown curly hair made me feel very uncomfortable and not welcome. The drinks are expensive so if I'm here and want to drink, shouldn't you just be nice and give me a table at this empty bar?
