We went for dinner and drinks Fri, 3/11. It was obvious that they still have a lot to figure out, however that is to be expected when any place first opens. Little things like the host not giving out menus while seating guests, wait staff still learning the menu, food runners not knowing the table numbers and serving orders to the wrong table, etc., etc. This review is NOT a critique of those things, as they tend to get ironed out a few months into being open. However, we wanted to point out a few things in the hopes that management will read the reviews and take them into account. We feel that Berkeley is starved for places like the Study Hall, and if they do it right, it can be a great destination for residents, and huge revenue maker for them. To start with the positives, the view is amazing. You can see most of the City of Berkeley, the practice tennis courts at the UC, the back side of The Greek Theatre, the Tower Clock at UC, downtown Oakland, the Bay Bridge, and S.F.. It truly is a view that does exist at any other Berkeley location. In addition, the staff was amazing! Despite some minor snafu's in service, they were all incredibly nice, welcoming, and hospitable. They are definitely still trying to find there identity. We were there at 5pm and the crowd was predominately 40+ , yet they were blasting shitty electronica music. They had a handful of the smaller trendy looking heat lamps for a patio that can accommodate probably 100 people or more. It is Berkeley, and as soon as the sun began to set, it got cold and windy up there. They will need to add more heat up there if anyone is going to want to stay out there past 8pm. As far as the food, I'd say it was sub-par at best. What you would expect for Marriott "hotel food". We had the Cauliflower nuggets, which were tasty and plated well. We had the grilled baja fish tacos, which were fine and also plated well. However, we also ordered the Pork Belly Banh Mi and it was simply horrible. It was almost all bread, which was very dry. The "pickled " carrots and Daikon were maybe pickled for 5 mins, also dry. The Pork Belly tasted like it had been under a heat lamp all day, and one half of the sandwich had only one slice of pork belly the size of my thumb. It really was the equivalent of what you would expect from a school cafeteria or Subway. In addition, it was plated on a "faux" paper plate looking dish , which isn't what you expect when you are dropping $150 on 2 people at a place. It seemed as if the the chef for the appetizers was completely different than the chef for the mains. And the change in the plating standard was really baffling. As it stands, it is definitely more of an appetizer and drinks spot for now. They seem to be targeting the younger crowd with the D.J.'s, the additional specialty drink bars on the patio, and having food be an afterthought. Hopefully they realize that the real money maker is the affluent Berkeley residents that are looking for more fine dining options in Berkeley. Not to mention the parents of athletes traveling to Berkeley to watch their children compete who would like a decent meal coupled with ambiance. We did not complain once, tipped our waitress very well, and will go back in a few months to grab a drink and see what adjustments have been made. We wish the place well! read more

We came here for my brother in laws 50 th birthday. This place is awesome. The views of the east bay skyline are awesome as well as those of the uc berkeley campus. The food was delicious and the staff was very friendly and attentive. This is definitely a place to check and come have a some food, drink, and relax. read more

This is a great location--amazing views of the campus from a 12th story perch. I came here after work on campus and found it very chill. Our server, Martin, was especially friendly and helpful. He went out of his way to make us feel welcome, explain the drinks to us, and frequently check in to see if we were doing okay. The cocktail I had, with Genetian Amaro was delicious. Sitting outside, the expansive views are phenomenal. It was just before sunset when we arrived and the transition to the nighttime view was lovely. Inside, the mostly youngish crowd looked to be having a great time. Considerably older, it would have been impossible for us to have a conversation. No problem on the outside deck. Our drinks were good, the brussel sprouts, as reviewed elsewhere , really good. We also had the 3 fish tacos, one each and one shared. The Sticky Toffee cake was a serious disappointment. Very dry cake and bland whipped topping, not the hoped-for whipped heavy cream. Our server was very attentive and he made helpful recommendations for drinks and bites. The Sticky Coffee dessert mistake was our unfortunate choice. read more

It was my first time at Study Hall and it has one of the best views of Berkeley. The brussel sprouts and the shrimp tacos were really good. Let me begin with the good stuff; the view is nice and it's a brand new spot; I liked that a lot! That's why I am leaving a 3 star review. Looked like they're still figuring things out which caused delays in seating arrangements, coordination between staff and preparing food/appetizers (we got our main dishes first and then the appetizer arrived). The staff were all courteous and tried to correct their team's mistakes. Considering the outdoor seating on a rooftop in Berkeley I was surprised that they were not equipped with heaters, it was chilly and became unpleasant within an hour after the sunset. I'll definitely give this place another try in the near future, hoping it becomes a spot that I can recommend to my friends as well. Fingers crossed to see more service improvements. read more

You absolutely cannot beat the view from the Study Hall rooftop. Especially on a warm day, It is so worth it. All the drinks we have had here have been good though it does take a while to get them (totally understandable given it can get busy). Everyone who works here seems very nice. The only downside was the food. We tried nachos, edamame, and a protein bowl and none were very good unfortunately. Definitely seems like a better place to go for ambiance and a drink after dinner but not a great place to go for a meal. read more

I came here tonight to watch the game, I had drinks and some stuff to eat. I had nothing to eat with and no napkin. I disregarded it, our waiter was a a older woman. We scanned our menu an she brought us out one. Another gentleman brought our food and sauces. Towards the end I left no tip and she comes hunting me down by the balcony saying dis I do something wrong, I'm like huh? [Halfway tipsy] She's like no tip I said no? It's not mandatory it's voluntary. Then she says this is America. I'm a minimum wage worker. So surprised looking at my bf face she goes I'm sorry I even asked , this girl really ruined a calm night over nothing. If she so worried about a tip which she didn't even ask if we needed anything the entire time, she should find another job instead of coming to verbally attack me infront of multiple people. On a recent visit to the Study Hall Rooftop Lounge I uncovered a few glitches. First was the challenge of getting access to the lounge as a 'walk-in' guest. None of the hotel staff knew the process for escorting guests to the Study Hall Lounge. I arrived 15 minutes before the Study Hall was scheduled to open at 4:30 pm. The front desk told me that guests must be escorted to the 12th floor by the lounge hostess. I was told to wait by the lounge sign in the Lobby until the Hostess arrived to escort me up to the 12th floor. At 4:30 pm no Hostess arrived in the Lobby. I stood waiting by the Study Hall sign with several other people until 5pm. Still no Hostess. Plenty of hotel staff were milling around in the Lobby. Not one staff person asked me if I needed any help. I went to the Front Desk at least 4 times to tell them that the hostess never showed up to escort me to the lounge. Each time the front desk staff called for a hostess to come down to escort me to the rooftop, but no one responded Finally after more than 30 minutes passed, a Front desk staff person decided to escort me up to the lounge herself. Obviously more staff training is needed to provide a more streamlined process for guests to access the Study Hall Lounge and provide better customer service. The Study Hall servers are attentive once you able to finally get a staff person to escort you up to the lounge. read more

Service was awful, actually didn't even get served! We had drinks at the bar, one round and the bartender didn't even seem excited to serve us. My friend, a guest at the hotel, was applauded with the service. I asked another server that was around our area to place an order and she said she would send our server. The sever went to every table but ours and when asked hey can I place an order he said I'll be back. Mind you the tables he visited didn't place an order at all three tables. I was hangry at this point, I finished my drink and got up. I mentioned to the hostess who was super friendly my experience, she didn't want to give the servers name. I am in the industry as well, bartender and vip server. I was disappointed, but understood. I spoke with a manager on my way out who didn't seem to care much. She invited us back on another day, but my friend was here performing tonight and looking for a simple meal before the show. No food was had, can't rate that. Service a 0 and I won't come here or recommend any one to come here either. read more

We've been living on Center Street for 10 years and surely welcome this wonderful addition to the neighborhood - The Study Hall Lounge. Our hostess, Grace, was outstanding. Set us up perfectly in front of the flat screen to watch the game. Karim was super service waiter and took good care of us. The kitchen was on pointe: great nachos with steak, and delicious smashed potatoes with yummy ketchup on them. There was live music and all around a great time. Staff was really nice. Me and my sister's were looking for a nice rooftop and came across this one. First off the the view of the bay was amazing... but the food was not so good. We ordered the calamari .. tasted like it was still alive. Then we ordered the shrimp tacos ‍. Presentation was cute, but trying to eat a fried jumbo colossal shrimp on a taco shell was very time consuming.. to say the least. The shrimp didn't have no favor. Lastly we tried the smashed fries .. let's just say they stayed very consistent. We waited over 30 mins for our drinks. We actually was done eating before we got our drinks. Our waiter "Tyler" was awesome and i know we probably got on his nerves complaining about our food but he was great and kept a smile and provided awesome customer service . F, this place. We wanted to go here for dinner on a normal Saturday night. No way to reserve a table unless you have a party of 10. Proceeded anyway, told we could have a table outside on a windy cold night. My husband found us a spot by the bar and ordered drinks. I went to the restroom and enjoyed the conversation of 3, 19 y.o. Stating how drunk they were and how the staff believed their IDs. Meanwhile me, a 41 y.o. Was carded for a $15 beer. We wanted to eat here and approached the stand 3 times to be told there were no tables. Yet empty "reserved" tables surrounded the bar. We moved seats and they demanded we close our tab for the first spot. We asked 3 times for them to clean the. Spot they were sitting at to no avail. We finally left. BTW the 19 yr. I really, really wanted to like this place. I've been there 4 times - I keep giving it another chance. The very pricy food is just mediocre, which I'd be okay with if the staff were friendly and the setting was beautiful but it's just not the case. The terrace is nice (on a warm day only - there are no heaters and it's windy on the rooftop) but you have beg them to let you sit out there. From maître d' to bartender to manager ... all act as if you are bothering them. I've never experienced a restaurant as unfriendly as this one. read more

Extremely overpriced!! If that's your thing- you'll love it. $11&$12 pints of beer. Overpriced food. Cooked on the first floor (?), when food arrived it was barely warm, dry and lacked seasoning. We got sliders- DRY, (fried cheese, not melted?? Really??) Brussels sprouts- covered in honey, great if you're 20 years old, and sesame chicken salad, fair but dry. Will not go back. Many other choices nearby. Save your money, go elsewhere twice for what you pay at this rip off place. read more
