I usually trust yelp/trip advisor before going to a new place and I overlooked the numerous bad reviews because of the cool social media posts about this place and took my best friend and family there for a birthday dinner and it was quite the mistake... though it was entertaining and unforgettable in more than one way. Food was actually decent even though our entire group seemed to have some reaction to it afterwards. Our server was sweet but one drink (a cocktail) only came once we were almost done eating, the manager dropped the "birthday cake" on our table without a candle while we were still in the middle of eating brussel sprouts, and another server gave us so much attitude that she should be the leading role in the reboot of "Mean Girls" (disclaimer: I don't know if they're actually remaking Mean Girls) The cake was barely edible. We had a good laugh about it, especially as we left our table and witnessed the table next to us tell the Manager that they had ordered none of the food that was in their table to which he replied: "oh well!" Warm beautiful night we all decided for night out again. Great view. We loved Steak, Brussel sprouts, edamame and wagyu burger with garlic truffle fries. Our highlight was amazing server YUKI! She explained new menu and cocktails and wines. WOW That sums up for her kind super attentive amazing service. She made sure everyone in my table were having fun. Has potential. Went for a friend birthday celebration, we were so excited since we saw in on instagram! As most! We called ahead to see if they could accommodate a large party, outside so we could have a view they told us no. So we decided to show up when they opened. A few friends sat at the bar so we could be complete. They told us we could only be outdoor, was not that busy on a weeknight. We got some tables.. ordered food, which took too long. Quality was underwhelming, and the drinks were not great. As people who travelled from SF to come experience we can say we were underwhelmed and disappointed. The view is great! Not so much the food or service. It can get pretty cold up there especially if it's windy they can't turn on the heating lamp because the wind will turn it off. It took us almost an hour to get our food. The spinach artichoke dip was cold and watery might be the worst ever. When asked for more chips it took them a very very long time to come back with it we had to ask twice. The fries were actually pretty good. Same with water refill took them a long time to come too. We order a medium burger and it came out well done. But the chef did replaced it. Still medium well but much better than the well done. The burger would have been delicious if cooked right. I celebrated my Birthday here and the staff went above and beyond to make this day special. Majority of my guests were Vegetarian and Chef Matt made sure he had designed a 5 course vegetarian menu for us. A special mention for our server Kareem. My son and husband had fish and chips which were very dry and over cooked. My other child had a burger and they didn't even bother to add a small side salad or fries. Study Hall Rooftop Lounge is inside the new Residence Inn right off the UC Berkeley campus. We were going to a show at the Greek Theatre on campus and stayed at the hotel. It was incredibly convenient to eat at the hotel prior to walking to the show and was encouraged to check out Study Hall on site. Not only was the hotel great but we were not disappointed in the Rooftop Lounge. We got there shortly after they opened and sat at the bar as we like to do. The bartender directed us in a gin recommendation and made a couple of nice cocktails for us, mine of course was a Manhattan, my go-to if any of you know me! There was live music setting up and the atmosphere was great with the sliding walls giving it an indoor/outdoor vibe throughout. My wife has some dietary restrictions so she ordered a heavily modified salmon dish which they nailed. Always appreciative when the chef is able to accommodate. I had the Fried Chicken Sandwich topped with slaw. The food was excellent, service was great, and the atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for before starting the trek across campus. Before being seated, I witnessed a hostess yell at a customer to wait to be seated even though they just said that the bar was open for free seating. It ES so shocking that everyone in line took a pause. When the customer mentioned they were going to the bar, the hostess said, "Oh, ok." 2. My seat was moved by request but upon moving, I had no server. I assumed it was a young lady because she did check on me, but when I asked for something, she said she wasn't my waiter with an attitude. Weird. 3. Every drink took FOREVER. I was there for several hours and could only get two drinks. I can understand if they were swamped, but this was not the case. Food: As far as the food is concerned, it wasn't that good. I couldn't even get my burger medium rare. My wife can't eat Guac, and I mentioned that. But her food arrived with guacamole on it. What a treat! I love a great rooftop spot and this is it! Super comfortable outdoor furniture, fire pits, even a high chair for our little guy. Chat with the bar team a bit, they will share all that goes into their drinks! The ginger beer is home brewed, various hand picked garnishes picked from the Tilden area. There is a strong sense of pride in their offerings and it really shows! My must try is the brussel sprouts! We tried the entire menu with our large group and enjoyed all the food offerings very much! In my opinion, all the right speed to pair with cocktails, wine or beers. After reading several reviews about Study Hall, I decided to try it for myself and I will say, I was surprised. We made a reservation for Saturday night for the patio. We had a great table with a perfect view. Our waitress was extremely attentive and helpful; I emphasize this because it seems like some people have had poor experiences with their waiters/waitresses. We started off with cocktails and then ordered the chicken sandwich. I had the Hancock and my friend had K.THX.BYE and Eternal Spring. To my surprise, both the cocktails and the sandwiches were good. Was it the best chicken sandwich I've ever had? No, but it definitely was not bad. Very flavorful and filling. The only problem I have with this place is that it is overpriced, even for Berkeley. The Study Hall Rooftop Lounge is a rarity for Berkeley having the ambiance of overlooking Oxford towards the campus. We went during a bit of a cold spell so sat indoors. Our server, Yuki, sensed we were cold so offered tea & other suggestions to counter the outside chill. We ordered up her suggestions & were rewarded with delicious fare. A comment might be to expand the menu to include more vegan, gluten-free options or toning down the spiciness of some dishes. We finished our meal before the din of live music started so I spoke to Yuki about the lounge, which is located on the 12th floor of the Residence Inn building. I suppose being originally from Japan imparted her sense of welcoming guests with utmost attention which we appreciated. We learned that the lounge opened fairly recently & menu items may change from time to time. I have little doubt that we will patronize the lounge on a future trip to Downtown Berkely. read more

This place was too overhyped. My friends and I (party of 3) made an indoor reservation on OpenTable 3 days before for dinner. When we arrived, we were told that there was limited seating indoors, but that the patio had more seats. However, there were no heaters on the patio, and although they offered blankets, we didn't think it seemed very COVID-19 friendly and a bit awkward to eat with. Ultimately, because it was extremely windy out (51 F, 14 mph winds), we were sat indoors at a small table. All 3 of us ordered drinks (Not Toddy, Campus Bird, Parfait Amour). While the Not Toddy matched the menu description, the other two drinks were disappointing. The Campus Bird menu description said it had rum, campari, pineapple, and lime. The drink was overwhelmingly sweet. There was zero pineapple flavor, and the lime was just the lime garnish, which didn't match the garnish in the menu picture. Additionally, apart from being extremely sweet (like maple syrup), it tasted very strongly of Asian herbal medicine. I felt that it did not match the drink profile in the description. The Parfait Amour menu description said it contained gin, luxardo, lemon, and créme de violette. It was a cloudy blue and not as bright as in the picture, and came out with a floating lemon skin instead of the garnish in the menu picture. Additionally, the alcohol flavor was extremely prominent in the drink (almost like vodka), which should not be the case. The service quality was also not the greatest. When we arrived the place was full, but towards the end about half the restaurant was empty. It took us 15-20 minutes to get the check, during which 2 servers were standing near the bar and saw all 3 of us trying to get their attention. The food was good but severely overpriced, especially for the portion sizes. We ordered the Pork Belly Banh Mi and the Kimchi Rice Bowl with teriyaki chicken. While the food tasted decent, it is not enough to justify the price nor lack of quantity. Overall this was a very disappointing experience. Based on photos and other reviews, we expected much better. The lack of heaters outdoors made it difficult to enjoy the purported views of the location, especially towards the evening when it got chilly. There was no live music, but the music they had playing was too loud. And the food and drinks are overpriced. I would not go here again. read more

I really wanted to love this place, the atmosphere is actually really good, the live music was great, the view was also very nice, but the service was pretty bad and the food was mid at best $25 for a burger that was uninspired, un seasoned quacamole, and a sour attitude from our waiter just killed the great vibes y'all have going on. I can say for certain the drink were good though. I just think if I'm spending $100+ on a meal that it'd taste immaculate but it was the opposite. Hope it does improve over time. read more

Booked a space outside for 18-20 guest for my 51st birthday celebration on July 5th one of the reason I chose the spot was for the view and the fact that there was a live band and Dj after speaking with a Natalee several times via email we chose the outside area which could better accommodate us .. never being told that we would not be able to hear the music in that area but we could definitely hear the band next door .. I was also told I would have one server to my area for my guest which included the fire pit are and a picnic table .. the picnic table was not in my area which left my area short of seating and our server sat other people there that were not my guests and proceeded to serve those other guests before mines.. ok . Asked for Natalee to please come down and she did with a manager I let her know about the music and that Yuki who was doing her best and was now overwhelmed I was also told they would look for a speaker.. after waiting and nothing I asked if my party could be moved inside so we could enjoy the music .. again waiting.. nothing so I decided to cut my party short called Hayward Karaoke where my next reservation was set they were able to accommodate us early so we took our money and spent the extra hours there.. more time was spent emailing and trying to reach a party coordinator then we spent at the establishment!..could be a beautiful place with better management and customer service. read more
