One star for the tator tots, and that's it. Do not come here. This lounge is on the 12th floor of the hotel. My husband and I came to check out this new place as it's been a long time since we've visited Berkeley. I went online at Open Table to reserve a able for 2 outdoors but we decided to change to indoors and 2 hours earlier. No issues. We got there 10 min late on a Saturday (6:10pm) due to parking and our table was still there. We first walked in and there were 2 guests in front of us. There was a wooden panel with a sign that says wait to be seated but no one was there. The two guests in front of us didn't get helped so they simply walked in the lounge and went to get help themselves (not sure how long they were waiting). They went outside and ended up sitting inside at the bar. Immediately after that, we were helped and went to our RSVP indoor seating (6:12pm). Scan QR code to see menu. Very small menu! Wish I took a photo to share. Our server greeted us with a little water jug, put it on our table, then went to other table to order their food. He came back asked what we wanted to drink. We got a dirty martini and a beer on tap. We asked if we can order our food as well and he said yes so we got 2 appetizers, tator tots and fried calamari. While we waited for our food and drinks, we looked around the lounge and noticed there were 5 tables (all had a party of 2 and one table had 4) before us who didn't have food or drinks besides their water cups and water jug. We weren't sure if we all got here at the same time or service was bad. We noticed our server was also the bar tender making drinks so they were either short staffed or on one was working the bar. A server with black heels would walk out of the kitchen doors with a tray of 1-2 drinks but no food was coming out. The table of 4 next to us received their drinks from the bar then we got ours 1 min later. I looked at my dirty martini and there were no olives nor olive juice used in my drink. There was a piece of lemon peele in the drink. I tasted it and it was awful. I told the server this isn't the drink I ordered and he went back put olive juice and 2 olives in there. HAHA he didn't make a new one. Sadly, the other tables before us didn't get their drinks until after I got my drink "fixed". We kept looking at the bar to see who the actual bartender is and we saw someone in a red and black long sleeve plaided flannel working up the bar after 40 min of being here. Earlier, I saw her/him casually walking inside and outside the lounge a few times but I thought she/he didn't work here because the outfit was very casual and she/he didn't have any tray, drinks or food on her as if she/he was a guest/costumer. Everyone else at least looked decent like they worked here, in a hotel lounge/restaurant with an apron, name tag, black pants, blouse, white collared shirt...) We waited 30 min to get our tator tots and calamari. Tator tots were hot, cooked very well, crispy and crunchy, but over seasoned with salt. The calamari was cold, soggy, and the batter was light, you can't even taste it. The spicy Mayo was not spicy at all and the sauce was a sweet and sour sauce (not a good combo). A grilled half lemon came with it. Not worth $10 each appetizer. Realizing service was slow and bad, we were halfway done with our appetizers and asked for the check and to-go boxes so we can get out faster. The check came 2 min later but no to-go boxes were available. Ok.....I went to the bathroom for 5 min, came back and check was not picked up yet. 2 tables before us finally got their food (tator tots) and drinks after asking the server a couple times about their items. Our server picked up the check and brought it back for signature. Everything we ordered was correct, left no tip. We checkout the outside area and was it cold, NO DJ (suppose to have one 6:30pm-8:30pm on Saturdays per the website), only 1 heater. Thank goodness we didn't sit outside!!! read more

I had the Bear-Grrr (burger) with a side of fries and it was decent. We also had the Baja Style Shrimp Tacos and "Mine, Not-Chos" (nachos) and they were pretty okay too. I wouldn't come here for a full meal because there aren't too many options. The service though was exceptional. I wish I caught the Japanese lady's name but she was very welcoming and friendly! The ambiance was amazing as well. I would recommend hanging out here before it gets dark because there are no heat lamps unfortunately so it gets quite cold. Really disappointed with the overall experience. Staying at the Residence Inn for a work play trip and came to Study Hall specifically from hearing they had a Berkeley Restaurant Week special. Arrived around 6pm to the place being a third full. It was windy and turns out there is only one firepit on the rooftop, which was already reserved. Would be nice if there were some space heaters. We opted for an inside table. When we saw the bar top near the windows were open, we moved there. The bartender was the first disappointing part of the experience. He definitely expressed being busy multiple times to not only us, but other patrons and even telling other employees he's too busy with tickets and just to grab stuff behind the bar themselves. Being in the section he made drinks at, it was even more of an ambiance killer every time he kept slamming the shakers on the counter tops, flicking water and glass rim salts all over the counter getting closer and closer to us each time. Other patrons were even saying out loud they just wanted to leave. Speaking of patrons, it's a nice mix of people. Families, college students, couples, singles. What we didn't expect was across the bar for two patrons to drop F bombs in conversations loudly clearly intoxicated, and then for them to come and go with a dog. Food wise, with it being restaurant week, we were excited for a special menu. We ordered the $45 special which was a spinach and artichoke dip with chips, a salmon belly, a pork belly and a panna cotta. Chips were cold, but the dip piping hot and runny (like it was microwaved). Salmon belly was almost like a frozen salmon burger patty with burnt edges. Pork belly came with sides of cabbage and some starch that lacked any seasoning or flavor. All of which definitely don't seem to be the best of Berkeley. All four of our drinks were on the weaker end. The seven spirit drink even didn't have an alcohol forward taste we were expecting. This was the first time I got an old fashion without a maraschino cherry too. Definitely recommend them to have a list of what brands of alcohol are available. The bartender kept saying what they have is up on the shelf, but from our section, we couldn't even see half the shelf since the beer tap and column were in the way, Overall, we're staying at the hotel one more night, and again for work in a month. We'll give it a try again if we see a different bartender for a quick drink to test it out, but thus far, not impressed. read more

We made reservations for Friday happy hour time. I think it's good that we did so we could get a spot outside. We had apps and cocktails. Prices for everything seemed higher than expected, eg $14 Moscow mule and the environment is definitely "bougie" for Berkeley but sometimes you need that. Appetizers tasted good - cauliflower bites, Brussels sprouts and my friend had the fried chicken sandwich with tater tots. The food was eclectic with an Asian influence. The views were amazing and it got chilly and windy after the sun went down. They provide blankets. I'll definitely come back. I am horrified by my experience at this restaurant. TLDR - I sent back a drink that tasted very off. I watched the bartender pour the very same drink over ice, remix it, and send it back to me. Not okay. For those wanting to read on... My complaint is in regards to the blonde female bartender. We had a lovely dinner and first round. I ordered a dirty vodka martini as my first drink, and ended up ordering a second when everyone got the second round. When my drink came, it tasted very off- possibly made with gin instead of vodka but more like a minty or anise flavor as well. I had moments before finished my first drink. This was not the same. I rarely ever send anything back, but was urged to by my brother who also confirmed the strange taste. The server was unapologetic but took the drink to the bartender, who huffed loudly that she made it correctly, and shot a dirty look my way. Then I watched her pour the exact drink I had returned over ice, added a splash of liquor. Then poured it back in the same glass and sent it back to my table. I politely declined the "remade" drink and they did take it off of our bill, but this type of drink service is beyond unacceptable. Especially at a restaurant where you are spending over $250 on dinner and drinks. I'd be concerned to have someone with this type of attitude working at my establishment. read more

A very cool rooftop bar and restaurant in downtown Berkeley. It's right near campus and Downtown Berkeley BART on the 12th floor of a hotel. There are amazing views of campus and the Berkeley Hills and quite nice views of Mt Tam, Albany and Albany Hill, and Oakland (and if you lean a bit in one of the corners you can see the Bay Bridge and SF). The beer selection isn't huge, but it's a very nice variety of local beers. The cocktails were excellent with nice liquor and very good flavors. A bit pricey, but fairly typical for the area and a nice cocktail (and better cocktails than most places around downtown Berkeley). The food looked interesting but we didn't get any. read more

Extremely over priced food ($8 for fries which were less than a small mcdonalds fries order) but drinks are good as are the views (east facing so don't expect to see sunset). This is a relatively new bar that opened up in the Marriott Inn. Although the name implies that the lounge is at the top of the building, it's actually on a middle floor, and the view is of the West face. The views are not bad, and it looks like they're planning to have lots of live musical performances. Overall, the ambiance is (or will be) pretty good. It's all just sort of expensive, just for ordinary beers and fast casual style foods. We ended up leaving for cheaper drinks somewhere else. read more

Berkeley has been long overdue for a rooftop bar! When this bar / lounge on the 12th floor at the top of the new Marriott opened up, I had to go experience it with some friends. We went on a Friday, not knowing how packed it would be at 6pm. We were informed in the lobby that it would be an hour 45 min wait time without a reservation. As a new establishment, I'm well aware that some kinks need to worked out so we were very patient and understanding. They seemed short staffed and flustered, but I really think after a few more weeks it would be smoothed out! The seating areas were plentiful and the view of downtown Berkeley is amazing! You can see most of Berkeley and to the bay even. At night, the lights on the patio deck make for a cozy atmosphere, there is a fire pit group seating in the corner and lots of benches. A live music group was performing until about 8, and then a DJ took over. I wasn't a huge fan of the music but it made for a mellow vibe. Drinks and food were decent, the service was slow but overall the staff was very nice! Looking forward to coming back after a few more weeks and definitely with a prior reservation. read more

This is a neat place when it is warm outside. If you choose to stay on the rooftop - outside - you should definitely bring a jacket. There isn't any parking on the lower level. This is right near UC Berkeley's campus so I would recommend finding park elsewhere and walking to the restaurant. It is above the hotel. The food is good. The portions are small but if you order a few items - you'll be satisfied. My family and I shared some Fries, calamari, tacos, and edamame. Our waitress was really nice. I saw a foodie video of study hall rooftop lounge on instagram and knew instantly that I wanted to check this spot out! Made reservations via OpenTable app and visited on a Saturday night with my family. There was a DJ there that played hip hop and r&b but only inside by the bar, not outside (we were hoping to hear the music outside). The rooftop view of the bay was truly breathtaking and amazing. I feel like that's the real value experience, the views! Shareable plates were roughly $20 each. We ordered about 5 dishes to share at our table: Brussel sprouts, pizza, chicken wings, garlic parmesan truffle fries, and mushroom tacos. We enjoyed everything we ordered except for the mushroom tacos.. (thought it would be sliced sautéed mushrooms but they were Hon-Shimeji mushrooms with an odd vinegary taste). We really wanted to try the Baja style shrimp tacos as seen on Yelp but it seems like the menu changes often. I usually trust yelp/trip advisor before going to a new place and I overlooked the numerous bad reviews because of the cool social media posts about this place and took my best friend and family there for a birthday dinner and it was quite the mistake... though it was entertaining and unforgettable in more than one way. Food was actually decent even though our entire group seemed to have some reaction to it afterwards. Our server was sweet but one drink (a cocktail) only came once we were almost done eating, the manager dropped the "birthday cake" on our table without a candle while we were still in the middle of eating brussel sprouts, and another server gave us so much attitude that she should be the leading role in the reboot of "Mean Girls" (disclaimer: I don't know if they're actually remaking Mean Girls) The cake was barely edible. We had a good laugh about it, especially as we left our table and witnessed the table next to us tell the Manager that they had ordered none of the food that was in their table to which he replied: "oh well!" Has potential. Went for a friend birthday celebration, we were so excited since we saw in on instagram! As most! We called ahead to see if they could accommodate a large party, outside so we could have a view they told us no. So we decided to show up when they opened. A few friends sat at the bar so we could be complete. They told us we could only be outdoor, was not that busy on a weeknight. We got some tables.. ordered food, which took too long. Quality was underwhelming, and the drinks were not great. As people who travelled from SF to come experience we can say we were underwhelmed and disappointed.
