I decided to give this place a try b/c of a coupon I received. Overall I think Jason is unique in his hair styling but he did not listen to what I wanted. Instead he: 1) cut my hair two inches shorter than what I wanted, 2) gave me some fobby layers which I told him I did not want. I understand a hair stylist may know what is best for your client but I wish he had listened to what I wanted and not be so stubborn. Jason's pretty awesome. I found him on Yelp and he was able to get me in the same day, which was perfect. Right when I sat in his chair and pulled out my ponytail, he could tell right away that the previous person who cut my hair had thinned it out. We agreed that the cut didn't really fit me, my hair did not need to be thinned out, and that it was SO six years ago. I brought a photo and while it didn't come out looking exactly the same - seriously, when does it - it was pretty close and he gave me fabulous bangs and cut some chunky layers into my hair that made it look thicker and fuller. I could tell he was taking his time and wanted me to look and feel good. I'm already looking forward to my next visit. I hate to put a damper on Jason's streak of five-star reviews, but I have to admit that I was unimpressed. I usually wait to cut my hair, then donate it. For that reason, I have specific instructions on how to cut it that are really quite simple (tie it up after it's washed, then chop it off in one blow). I had to explain this five times to Jason, until I finally had to physically move away from his scissors so that I could keep my hair so I could still donate it. It took a lot of effort to get him to listen to what I wanted. When he finished my cut, I was also disappointed. I had a specific cut in mind and brought a photo, and he seemed like he'd be able to do it. In the end, it came out looking very different from the picture I brought, and a lot like the pictures found on his Yelp site. Is it possible that he's a one-trick pony? Jason also insisted that I don't cross my legs so that my haircut wouldn't be uneven. I'm one of those girls who always crosses her legs, so it took every ounce of effort to keep them uncrossed... and my hair came out uneven anyway! I appreciate his skill and his amicable nature, but I probably won't be returning to him for future haircuts. read more

I'm extremely happy to have found Jason (thank you Yelpers!) and am extremely pleased with the haircut I got from him yesterday. Jason has good technique and a good eye, and is probably a good judge of character, too. I am very picky about my hair, and during our pre-haircut consultation/talk, I found him finishing my sentences for me. At that point, I immediately relaxed as I felt Jason "got me". I'm so pleased with my resulting haircut, I'd trust Jason to just do whatever he wanted without any input from me, and that is saying a lot. Did I say I was picky about my hair? :) I have straight Asian hair and used to use a lot of product because I thought that was needed to do the style I wanted. In fact, I'd never leave the house without. Jason showed me that with the right cut, minimal product was needed. He showed my how to style it with that TINY dot of product too, LOL. My hair does things I've never thought possible before. My haircut looks great even without any product. No more worries about greasy looking or shiny hair! Low maintenance is a plus! Jason's prices are reasonable. I feel like I got a deal because I've paid twice the price for lesser haircuts in the past. Yes, I've also paid less for haircuts, too, but really not by that much. Parking is convenient, and cheap just a few steps away for those driving in from out of San Mateo. The parking structure on the corner of 2nd and El Camino charges .50 an hour. Oh, and on a side note...an added bonus: after the haircut, I met a friend for lunch and she asked me if I lost weight. Jason's haircut must have contoured my face or something, because I know for a fact that I hadn't. If anything, I had gained weight haha! She also loved my haircut, she kept touching it. Jason is amazing - he spent 4 hours on my hair for the Japanese Straightening because I have very thick hair. It seemed that he didn't originally think it'd take that long but when he realized how thick it really is, he did not loose patience and took care of every strand of my hair from the very beginning to the very end of the procedure. I could tell he loves his job & does his very best. My hair did not turn out burnt or dry but silky smooth and straight. He has also studied at alot of different schools of beauty and knows a ton about hair and critical do's and don'ts much more so then I've experienced with other hairstylists. He didn't try to sell me anything but suggested ways to take care of my hair post-appointment and offered to fix any issues if they ever occur post-appointment. The studio is also very large with high ceilings and awesome lounge-like music with songs from all over the world, which makes you feel like you're really getting a make over at a fancy place =). read more

This review is strictly for a Mens' cut: I get my hair cut about once every 2 weeks. After moving to the Bay, I literally tried someone new every 2 weeks for over a year. You can do the math... that's a lot of searching. Luckily for me, the hunt for a great stylist ended once I found Studio Jason. Jason is patient and takes his time to really get it right, has great attention to detail (for guys, he never forgets to balance out the sides and trim the neck hairs... small details, but important to every guy I know), is able to deal with challenging, coarse Asian hair, and can customize his approach to the shape of your head. Jason's hours are pretty flexible and he's got a great attitude and willingness to work with you to find what works. Unlike many people I don't really have very specific ideas for how my hair should be cut but Jason's suggestions worked well on me almost every time so far (I did describe a overall direction though). This may be the first time I'm going on 7 weeks without getting my roots touched up (blonde) yet. I'm going to need it done soon, but it's definitely grown out much more natural than usual. I started getting my haircuts from Jason over a year ago, right before my wedding, when my wife-to-be strongly suggested that I deserved a better haircut than what I could get from a chain with "cuts" or "clips" in the name. I was skeptical, but after getting my hair cut once by Jason, I had to admit she was right! Jason really knows what he's doing, and he's also very nice and easy to talk to. He's great at recommending a style based on your physical characteristics like height and face shape, and he's super-meticulous, doing most of the cut with scissors and only using a clipper when absolutely necessary. I am super sad to write this update because I have gone to do the Japanese straightening treatment with Jason since 2014 and was planning to keep going to him for years to come. Jason is really good at doing the Japanese straightening. After one bad experience with a different salon, I have always gone to him to get my hair straightened, and even referred my mom to him. However, this last time I had a really poor experience. Over the last two years, I had grown my hair to be really long and I LOVED it! So when I went to see Jason I told him - please just keep it simple and long. I just want it to look similar to how it looks now. But Jason vehemently disagreed with me. He said he wanted my hair to look "fun" but at the end he cut it very short and did the fobby layer thing. I came in with hair that looked great on me and that people complimented, and came out with a hair cut that made me look about twenty years older. What is worse is that growing the hair back to its original length will likely take me two years - and that Jason ignored what I had asked. I feel like the purpose of a hairstylist is to make you feel gorgeous and confident. :) But the day after the hair cut with Jason I looked at myself in the mirror and actually cried because I hated the cut so much! I have never had such a strong negative reaction to a haircut. But the haircut was unflattering and uneven, with one side clearly shorter than the other side. I really loved my hair pre Jason, and losing it felt emotional - like Jason had somehow stripped me of my sexiness/flair/uniqueness and turned me into a tired 40 year old! I could either hate it for months or I could fix it. So I decided to get hair extensions from someone else and now I feel a bit more like the old me. BUT the hair extensions were expensive (over $1000), and the straightening and hair cut with Jason was also expensive ($500). I am not rich, so I went to Jason, explained the situation, and asked him if he could kindly give me the money back so that I could afford to get the hair looking the way I wanted to again. At that time Jason said he would give me half of the money back, but that I had to come on a different day. I explained to him that I live 45 min away, but since I was grateful for getting some of the money back I was ok with it. When I came back today he said he would actually only pay me back $175 instead of $250. I am not a confrontational person so I said ok, but I felt like once again Jason was more intent on imposing himself over me vs. showing that he cared about me as a client and also as a person. I really wish that Jason would have either listened to me and made sure I got a haircut I felt good about, or at least given me the full money back. It would have meant a lot and would have also alleviated a bit the financial burden of fixing the problem he had caused. read more

Yipee, finally got around to getting my hair cut! I would say it was about a year since my last cut. I just never got around to it. Jason and I joked around about my hair. He knew what kind of style I wanted just by looking at me... ok I'm just low maintenance but he didn't' hold that against me. I wanted to get high-lights that weren't very contrasting which I later learned is called low-lights. I have really black hair (everyone asks if I use hair dye, but I don't) and I don't like the bleached look. Jason helped me pick a little of a gold and red highlight and told me I'd like it. After about an 45 minutes he finally got all my hair into those little tin foil squares. I seriously have a lot of hair, I bet Jason's arms were aching by time he finished. Plus he ended up chopping a lot of it off at least 4 inches off... what endurance! Jason explained to me during the chopping session of what he was doing and why it he was doing it, to add body and ease. He seems to know what he's doing and pays attention to detail. for the past two years, since moving down to san mateo, i've been trying to find a good hair cut place. well look no more! cause i've found it! jason is amazing! i told him i didn't want to cut it too short, and he totally kept the length. but i wanted to cut off a lot of my hair, like 4inchs! but he still managed to keep the length. i'm stressing about the length because i know there's a lot of girls out there who don't like to cut off too much. jason doesn't do that. he listens, gives you advice, and make you look brand new afterwards. he told me to get up from the chair look straight ahead, so that he can cut the back perfectly, and thats exactly what he did. till this day my hair is still clean cut, straight all the way across, and very balanced and even. turn my head to the left so he can cut the sides, turn my head to the right so he can cut the other side. VERY precise, and scientific. he's REALLY good at what he does! also, he taught me a new way to blow dry my hair. try to blow dry it from the inside out. that well make it look like the day i stepped out of his salon. and lemme tell you, it does! i blow dry my hair, all the time like that now, and it looks like i got a new hair cut every time. he also just used scissors to cut my hair. none of the layered scissors which can actually just make your hair look very uneven. he said, that's all you need really; just a nice sharp pair of scissors.
