I just moved to san mateo and was looking for a place that wouldn't cost me $100 for a haircut and thats when I saw all the reviews of At One Ten Salon. I first tried going without an appointment but they were full so I made one for the next day. My appointment was at 1:45 and I arrived at 1:44 thinking that since I arrived at the exact time my appointment was, I was gonna have to wait but as soon as I walked in they were waiting for me. I didn't even sit for a second in the waiting area!! NAOKA WAS GREAT!!!! Before she did anything she took time to know what I wanted which made me feel comfortable considering I wanted a whole new look (I did had a picture of what I wanted to make it easier). I had such high hopes. I guess it was all to good to be true. I neglected to make a hair appointment until late Friday evening for the Saturday wedding... [long story... I wasn't planning on getting my hair done at all til about mid-week and then had to muster the funds and find a salon open early enough, that was still open and booking appointments, etc. I wish I had just called my usual guy earlier in the week. sigh.] ...and it was relatively cheap. $55 for an updo? Okay. So I go in and tell her I want half up, half down, side part, some 'body' to it and the updo. It's all going o-kay until she takes out the curlers and catches my hair in every one. EVERY one. And it HURT. No apology, but I'm still thinking she's going to comb it out and attack it with the iron. Instead she keeps teasing my hair and starts pinning. I looked like I had alfalfa sprouts coming out of my head. I was so upset because 1. It hurt and looked atrocious, but 2. I was out $65 [yeah, I tipped - idiot] I really didn't even have, and 3. had to instead make do with what time I did have to fix it. My hubby and I are going on vacation soon and he needs a haircut before that. Unfortunately the stylist he has been working with relocated to south California recently. So he searched online and decided to try this place today. He spent around $60 for less-than-40-min cut (including shampoo and blow-dry) and the result is just AWFUL. I think this is the worst haircut he has ever got and I don't even want to look at him. He doesn't recall the name of his stylist, but he told me the stylist is a female. Jesse did Japanese magic straight perm. Usually Japanese salons do this better than anywhere else so I thought I was in good hands. I think he left the solutions on too long but basically my hair came out frizzy and damaged, even worse than when I walked in. Now I need to use straight iron every single day when the whole point of getting the perm was so I wont have to. I went back to my other japanese stylist in SF who said it's not fixable and I just have to grow it out. Jesse was super friendly but he should talk less and focus on getting the hair right. Very poor experience. This is one of the worst haircuts I've ever had. I don't feel like my requests were appreciated. When we go for a haircut, we are the ones who have consequences for whatever is done so it's important to have a good barber. We need someone who cares about how you look after the haircut, otherwise never go again. And so I will not ever come back to this salon again because I don't think my barber Mieko cares about the outcome and she just wants to take my money and get the work over with. Being myself, i tend to save some $$ on hair cuts just because there's only so much you can do with your hair. i moved up to Nor Cal, close to 2 years now. -Residing in Union City, i have been a frequent patron to local asian hair salon here. Cheap hair cut, but not much of style.. Perhaps it was just my luck, no matter which asian hair salon that i go to.. i always end up getting the same hair style no matter what i tell the hair stylist. So this time after months.. i mean months of holding back my hair cut, i decided to go somewhere else.. My option are typical - Japan Town in SFO (Expensive yo... not including the commute), or any nearby popular hair salon like Regis (Expensive and same time i had bad experience with a few hair stylist) So i was driving through downtown San Mateo (closer to work) and i bump into this neat little hair salon tuck in between offices in downtown San Mateo. -I checked out the Yelp review so i took my chance. suprised ..suprised... It was an amazing experience. I was pampered and taken care of by Meiko. She was great.. she ask me a few questions on how do i want my hair and so on and so forth... then she with her magic hands... waaa laaa.... a decent looking hair style .. so i don't look like the other Asian guy that walk right down the street. Yet another stop on my long quest for a good haircut in the Bay Area. For a place with this many Asians, I'm surprised it's taking this long... I decided to treat myself after finishing up an internship and getting a job ready for after graduation so I can start occasionally pampering myself. As a student, I've been weathering cheap-o places that have done a subpar job of cutting my hair compared to the cheap but amazing cuts I used to get in NYC, but when you're a student living in the Bay Area, you'll live with it. Given the great reviews for this place, I was hoping to get more out of the haircut, and I waited a while after the haircut to style it a few ways to see if it would be any better. Sadly, it's about as good as other places I've tried getting my hair cut more layered, and I wasn't really blown away. The cut itself was $60 for about half an hour and that is not including tip. I guess this is normal in the mid-peninsula since most of the reviews here shrug this off like it's normal (on the East Coast, 30-40 for the same services better make you look like an Kpop star). I've requested the same cut at places for $18ish (Oakland - with hair wash and a pretty detailed head massage), $20ish (Cupertino, 2 places - neither will wash your hair with that price), $20ish (Korean place in Santa Clara with horrific ratings on Yelp that does not include a hair wash, but strangely was the best cut... maybe the price was for the stylist's awful 'tude), $40ish (2 other places in SM - neither washed my hair), and now this place for $60. They all stack up similarly in end results -- I've been trying to get the hair layered and thinned out a bit with about 1-2 inches trimmed (so essentially, clean up the split ends, re-layer the whole thing to retain the shape of the cut and make it not as heavy so I can get some volume when I blow dry it out). I don't typically judge a haircut until I get home, especially since I think the judge of a truly good haircut is one where I can air dry it and it still looks decent. Tried that, whole cut is still thick as hell and the layers are heavy. Next, I do my next test -- how does it look after putting it in a bun overnight to curl it? No cigar -- thick enough that curling it makes me look like my mom after the perm helmet. ARGH! While the cut was decent (looked good on the way out since it was blow dried with a round brush to sort of curl the ends, and the ends are even length on both sides -- believe it or not, some places don't even check to see if both sides are the same length), basic layers were cut in, and bangs were trimmed accordingly, the hair is still thick and as heavy as before, and the bottom layer is as blunt as it was before. Consensus: similar problems as the other cuts I've gotten so far, similar effort, with a higher price tag. Don't get me wrong, it's a safe basic cut, but it's not a great cut. So much for hoping that by being less cheap I get better results, lol. She knew my hair was damaged and were concerned so she took care of it after hearing what style I wanted. She's honest when it comes to dying hair and cutting it. I love getting Japanese thermal straightening from her and when I want to dye my hair she consults me first which I like Bc she is genuinely concerned about your hair and not getting $$$ from you. Its my 3rd trip to AtOneTen and I'm fairly satisfied with the overall service, and cut. The first trip was with Jesse, second was with Aki, and third recent one, I had Jesse cut my hair from medium length, below the shoulders to short (approx. 3 inches shorter). I called just about 1 hour before closing and they were so kind enough to let me still come in for the haircut. Jesse is really so fun and nice to talk with. I always have a great time with him and he keeps me laughing through the cut! He spent a lot of time asking me questions about my daily hair regimen, which is really nice of a hairdresser. Without pushing products on me, he suggested a few tips on how I can moisturize my hair better and also how to style it. It was a cut and hair lesson in one :) I was a bit surprised at the price in the end, I was hoping that it would be under $50 total (which includes tip), but the total was $55 and that was without my tip. This review is long over due. I've been going to At One Ten for a couple years now. Back then I lived closer to San Mateo. At first I wanted to keep Jesse a secret, so that I could always get an appointment. Well that didn't work, since he's been pretty booked all weekends all summer :) Now that I moved down to South Bay, that trek to San Mateo on the weekends is certainly worth it! I never really know how to describe the hair cut I want, and I can't ever seem to find the right picture. When I show Jesse pictures, he'll explain to me which style will work and how much maintenance or styling it will take. Many times, I just tell Jesse, do whatever you think will be best, and I have yet to be disappointed! Jesse is such a sweetheart. I've run close to half an hour late on a Wednesday evening appointment (due to rain and traffic) and he waited for me and gave me an awesome cut! When I couldn't get in for a Sunday appointment during regular hours, he took me an hour before opening. I also like that he will use various hair products and make suggestions, but never pressure me to buy products. That is just stellar customer service, on top of an awesome hair style! read more

I've had my hair cut twice here and I am sure I will be back many more times! For the last 5 years I have been a nomad searching for a salon to call home. I have wondered far and wide from San Francisco to East Bay to find a salon and stylist to take care of my tresses. I pay paid anywhere from $10 to $110 for a haircut. But I shall roam no more. My home is now At One Ten. Even better still they are right down the street from where I live. Several months ago I had a cut with Miako. She was wonderful. I usually give my stylist full control only telling them what length I want. We discussed a cut and she executed it to perfection. Fast forward 4 months and I was ready for a big change. Miako was not available and I needed it cut ASAP so I went with Jesse this time. I went from hair halfway down my back to just above the shoulders. Jesse too was awesome! Here is what I love about the two of them. They were super friendly, punctual (both were waiting for me as I walked in at appointment time), had a nice blow dry styling both times and they both took time out to teach me how to style it at home. This is not a pretentious salon. The owner was sweeping the floor after his last cut before he left for the day. I had gone to a salon (the haircut before miako) in Burlingame who shall remain nameless. I paid more for the cut. The stylist barely trimmed my hair, I had asked for 1.5 inches to be taken off to keep the ends healthy. She barely cut anything off and didn't shape the hair at all. She did blow dry the hair but didn't really style it. I think it was more so didn't look like a wet dog leaving the salon. I did look like a pomeranian. She poofed up my hair (usually worn flat and straight) so much that I went home and took a shower so that I could get it under control again. Both times after leaving At One Ten I felt like I should have made formal plans to show off my hair. Last note - you can use a debit/credit card for the tip. I really don't understand the whole, "sure pay with your card but if you tip you need cash" thing. read more

You know...I really hate hair cuts. It makes me nervous every time I get a hair cut from somebody I've never...well, gotten a hair cut from before. So imagine my frustration when my go-to hair stylist fell off the face of the earth. Can you imagine what was going through my head? Allow me to give you a glimpse. "SHIT." Yeah, that was pretty much it. But today I think I found my new go-to person. It was my first time stepping into At One Ten today and so I was a little nervous since I had no idea what to expect. At One Ten is a little salon located on the quieter side of Downtown San Mateo. The interior is cute with the big mirrors and sophisticated decorations. But enough of that...let's get to the main point shall we? I had PHIL. And he's the main reason why I'm giving 5 stars. 5 STARS MAN. Don't be jealous you're not getting ***** stars. As the previous Yelper below me said, Phil is cool from top to bottom. His tattoos intimated me a bit in the beginning but after talking to him, I realized that he was the exact opposite. He's really friendly and I could tell that he cared a lot about hair by the way he kept asking me questions about mine (even though I had no clue how to answer him most of the time). Before we started, he asked me how I wanted him to cut it but since I really had no idea or preference, I gave him all the power. I actually went there for Aki and just found out that she moved back to Japan already (yeah I know I should read the review before I go but anyways.) I then the first time have Jesse to be my stylist. He's very good, too. He listened to what I wanted and carefully made my hair. Four stars just because The style is not really what I thought it would turn out, (but, well, that's because I asked him to cut it shorter as well...) but still look very nice on me. I would say there are not many short hair styles that I really like (and yeah, my hair has failed on other stylists many times.), and he did a good job making the right style for me. It's been about three months since my bang trim at this salon, and my bangs are now the length that I had originally wanted them to be. Shortly after my last review, Jesse called and apologized for my dissatisfaction and offered a refund. (I did not take them up on that offer.) But I appreciate their concern for customer satisfaction. If you've been following my search for a stylist with great layering skills, you will know that it was a difficult search until I went back to my old stylist farther away. Mieko was very efficient and got the job done exactly as I wanted it, couldn't be happier with the result! I chopped off my hair on Sunday. I had the urge to take it all off, so I did or at least most of it. I didn't want to go to San Jose, so I decided to find a local salon by my place. I selected one through yelp and based on the reviews and location, I went to At One Ten Salon. I walked in and was assigned to Aki. I didn't quite know what I wanted but I knew I wanted a short cut. I never wanted to pee in my pants as much as I did during this process, not because I was nervous about cutting my hair short, but Aki just made me nervous. Aki is Japanese and spoke limited english, she did her best to accomodate what I wanted but at the same time she kept on using such words as razor and bubble hair, many many times. Yikes! I was feeling nervous. She was careful at going inch by inch but even then I wasn't sure what was going on. But slowly, I saw my hair style take shape. Aki was so meticulous about what she was doing. She spent over an 1 hr 30 min on my cut. At the end of loved it. I have to agree with Marvin's review about Eric. He does not seem like he knows how to cut hair. I also felt like I should have walked out right there and then. The minute he started cutting my hair I had the feeling that he is very new and I asked him how long he had worked in this business and basically he had only had 1 year training and he started cutting customer's hair. I was horrified. I paid $55 for a women's cut! I chose a very basic hair style and basically walked out of the store looking the same because I did not want to risk having a very bad hairstyle. No one noticed I had a haircut. I'll have to pay to get a haircut again in the near future. I am very disappointed with this salon. It's been five years since I've walked in the doors of At One Ten Salon... and Mieko's been my stylist ever since. I've never really wanted to change that. She has lots of experience cutting Asian men's hair (she's from Tokyo and has cut hair there for years), and it shows! I've got thick short hair and she takes great care in keeping it nice and short(without the clippers). We've got a great rapport, and I look forward to seeing her every six-or-weeks. I tell him, I don't like to do anything to my hair, not even blow dry on regular days, cuz I just don't have the time, and don't even think about a hairstyle that would require any products... Came here for a haircut since I didn't want to drive so far to my stylist. The place is situated right near El Camino and 2nd Street. My Stylist, Aki, helped me cut my hair. She was meticulous in asking questions and cutting my hair to my specifications. I appreciated the fact that she would stop after a while to check up and see that things were how I expected it. Overall, it was alright, but, I have to say that I do miss my stylist only because whenever I go visit her, I never have to worry about describing my cut. It's automatic! Toshi is the man. Now there are already lots of reviews saying just that, so why another one? Because Toshi has great chops (pun intended) for cutting white-guy hair as well. I'm always apprehensive about my haircuts because my hair is naturally curly and one snip may be a drastic change for me. He's very always pays attention to what you want and takes his time to get it right. I recently went for a new look. I told Jesse that I wanted my hair straight. Although they might be a little pricier, I can guarantee the moment I walk out of the salon, I will not cry. Aki has done my hair in the past, however she just moved back to Japan. I'm a guy, and finding a salon was tricky for me. I like the atmosphere and location of At One Ten-- its close to downtown, but far enough to be kinda quiet. Aki cut my hair a few times here; I liked it (quite pricey), but she's not here anymore. I had Phil (he's new, I think under the supervision of the owner). He's the perfect kind of guy I want to be cutting my hair. Everything from his hair to his tattoos were pretty damn cool; it gave me a sense of confidence that my haircut would come out cool too. Now, I like to style my hair and it gets quite long sometimes. I have always had a fauxhawk but I wanted something different (I swear everyone and their dads have fauxhawk these days. Its cool, dont get me wrong, but I need to move on). He understood me when I said I wanted something new, and gave me great tips as to the thickness of my hair strands and what would hold up over time and what would not. I think i can officially say he's my go to hair stylist. He's young, he's hip, and he has a good understanding of hair. Ask for him, I think he only is able to cut certain days. read more

Phillip has been my stylist for more than a year now. He is very friendly and good at communicating with customers about what they want and what he thinks will help. He is always on time and I never have to worry if he will mess up my hair (yes I had another hair stylist at another salon who forgot appointment time before). It is hard to find good hair stylist who knows how to cut Asian hair with the right styles, and I have gone to 4 different salon before finding Phillip, definitely sticking with him. I went for a color correction by Phil, I had uneven and brassy patches of color (that I messed up on my own.) Phil worked magic and turned it around to not just a salvage, but an actually good look that I can sport proudly. Since my hair was already colored, I needed to bleach it first, and Phil explained everything during our consultation and along the process of the actual correction session. At least they know how to cut asian hair. I asked for a simpled layered look and got what I expected. It falls nicely, let's see how it will grow out. She thinned it out near the bottom and seemed to listen to my requests. Though, I'm not sure why it seems like hair salons take about 20 minutes to actually cut and then 30 minutes to blow dry... this is the second hair salon in San Mateo where the stylist wasn't paying attention to the heat of the hairdryer and burned my scalp. Since I moved to San Mateo, it is a lot of work for me to get up and go to the city and go to see Kelly (Kayo Hair Salon) but I was surprised there is a nice decent hair salon right on the corner from my apt. Aki is good, i can speak Japan so it was easier to explain to her what i wanted. EVEN THOUGH she cut a little bit more than I wanted but it is ok! it will grow back, right? I gave them 4 stars cuz i wish they had a clear price list that shows how much i was going to pay. $55 isn't that bad but Kelly only charge me 35 and give me a nice head massage... I will go back when i feel lazy but want a hair cut?! read more

Got my hair did from my buddy Phil. He actually takes the time to make sure you are satisfied with every aspect and pays attention to detail. I suggest going to him for hair cuts or coloring, he is very good at what he does. Hes a very chill, nice and down to earth guy. I will be back when i need to get that fresh hair look. read more
