Ok y'all, this was a big step for my social anxiety-- I went and got a haircut! I haven't done this in years and years. I had been thinking about it, and usually that just means I change my mind because it involves going out in public, but I had the day free and on a whim and called the salon I've driven past several times. Andy answered the phone and was so professional and KIND that I decided it couldn't be that scary and booked the first appointment they had available for the day-- didn't want to lose my nerve! People get their hair done every day right? There is a wee parking lot, but there are reserved spaces for the salon. The interior is modern, clean, and open. There was music on, but not too loud and not too soft. The temperature was perfect, I'm usually cold all the time everywhere. They have little smocks for customers to wear, that probably helped too. Andy gave me a quick tour, and I sat down to wait for my stylist. I had booked with Carl and he was very friendly, polite, and calm. He was attentive and did a wonderful job helping me decide exactly what I wanted. Throughout the entire process he would inform me what he was doing and why, and was overall extremely pleasant to have a conversation with! I was really happy with the cut and style-- Carl did a fantastic job and is a true professional. I booked the appointment online and they confirm the next morning. Later that day they requested that I come in 45 minutes after my scheduled appointment time Since the stylist was running late. I agreed. They then message me only 15 minutes prior to the time I would need start heading that way for the new appointment time to tell me the stylist is no longer available And kept pushing lower level stylist on me. I felt it was fairly inconsiderate to only notify me 15 minutes before I would need to leave. Im disappointed because I spent time searching for a salon and I even looked though every stylist they had online and selected mine based off of that. I talked with the manager to reschedule and I felt they were rude and rushing me into making a decision. When I confirmed a new appointment time they said confirmed and immediately hung up. I had additional questions So I called back and again the manager seemed like they could care less so I just went ahead and cancelled. read more

This place is a gem to find in a big city. After the long search, I finally found a place that doesn't over process my hair and has amazing high end quality extensions. I'm obsessed with this salon and the way they have transformed my hair. My hair is healthier, longer, and more glamorous. I was nervous to get my hair cut during the pandemic but I found this salon via positive friend and yelp reviews. I read about their covid policies online before my appointment (call once you arrive so that you only come inside when the stylist is ready, temperature check on arrival, everyone wears a mask the entire time, and more importantly, the shampoo, conditioner, hair cut, hair color and style were all done in its own separate room so I truly did not have any contact with anyone besides the stylist!) Yesenia really listened to me and somehow matched the exact cut and color I wanted from a picture I showed her on my phone. I had to make sure Studio A gets the credit they deserve. Of course, not every salon or individual stylist is perfect, but I think Studio A definitely strives for the ultimate happy customer. Like me! If they ever do wrong, I'm sure they would do what it takes to fix the issue. I believe that this current location is a newer spot for them. I've been getting cut and color by Lew and I love the ashy smoky caramel color that compliments my skin tone. It's difficult to get that really flattering hair color for Asian skin that's not too blonde or brassy, but still shows dimension and color for summer. Lew is really a magician with color and I'm excited to see what he comes up with every time. I also have a ton of limpy hair and Lew gave me a lob and thinned out so there's more volume, its polished enough for work, and still can be curled into waves for the weekend. I really appreciate the education from Lew regarding which products to use and how to obtain the best results. He's informational, but not pushy. He also explained to me what he will do during the visit and answers any and all questions I had since I was new to balayage. Lew listened to my needs and takes into account my lifestyle and my maintenance level to give a cut and color that will grow out nicely. I only had two haircuts here: the first was great but the second with David was really disappointing. My front face framing layer was uneven, and after requesting I wanted a blunt cut, my hair looked like an inverted triangle/v shape at the ends. This makes for my curly hair really difficult to grow out. I ended up having to cut 3.5 inches at a different salon 2 months later to CORRECT it. I felt really defeated because I've been trying to grow my hair long for months. I also do not like how I was pushed so many products to purchase on top of an already expensive haircut. read more

By far the best salon in Houston, and I've tried most of the top salons. The decor is chic, classy, trendy and just makes you feel good to be there. David ordered a special washing chair from Italy that I've never seen anywhere. It reclines and actually massages your body while you get your hair washed. The sink basin also holds your head in a perfect position that your neck doesn't hurt like most chairs. It's simply a must-experience. It has the appearance of an expensive and snooty salon but with the feel of a neighborhood barbershop. Every employee is friendly and helpful. David is nothing short of a hair god. He is the type who can take your vision and turn it into something that suits you perfectly, the kind you can trust completely. He transformed my boring long brunette locks into a fun balayage long bob and I love it! They offer extensions and makeup services as well, and I feel like their prices are actually a tiny bit cheaper than the other top salons that I've tried. Granted, they are still expensive.. but that is expected for the expertise they provide. Do yourself a favor and just book an appointment (early because their calendar is booked way in advance). I do my hair color with Yesenia and she does an amazing job with blonde hair. She is truly an artist with balayage, and my hair looks natural and bright after I leave. I have darker brown hair, but have it highlighted to a really light blonde. I originally booked in with Yesenia because she is the brazillian blowout expert, and she truly lived up to the title. The brazillian blowout is not a perm like treatment, it is a keratin smoothing treatment and it truly has made the world of a difference for my hair living in Houston. Expensive. Did not get desired look, even after two sessions, for which they charged me full price for both. I had a family emergency and forgot to cancel the third session (to correct my hair) so they left me a voicemail saying they were charging me over $100. When i called and spoke with a team member they said "nothing can be done, the charge is automatic". Yes, sounds silly. Eventually they dropped the charge. The manager never called me back to follow up as she said she would. I wouldn't mind paying the prices if they were able to complete a service and/or if they were more accommodating, but there are plenty of other salons in the area for busy moms. read more

DO NOT GO HERE EXPECTING A BRIDAL TRIAL. This place will charge you full bridal prices just to do a trial, even though their receptionist will quote you a price much lower. I was even told by the makeup artist that she was going to go "even bolder!" on my wedding day, yet she happily charged me the full bridal price for makeup. When I called back to get part of my money back, the woman basically told me I should feel lucky I paid the price I did, because if I'd gotten my hair done with David I would have paid even more. They pay attention and know exactly what your hair needs! Jesse does a phenomenal job with hair and makeup. When he suggested a classic bob - a hair cut of about 4 inches - I didn't even flinch. (7/30/15) I decided to change my rating from 2 to 1 star because of the lack of apology or concern from manager nearly 2 weeks after my review. (7/17/15) I am writing this review strictly based on my experience with my stylist Jessica. Jessica is a talented stylist by all means and she can give you great advice if you are not sure what you want for your hair but I am a client who knows what I want and even bring pictures. Here is my story... Visit 1 (March): I told Jess that I wanted to cut my dead ends off so that my hair could grow. She had to take a few inches which was not that bad. I was happy overall with my healthy hair when I left. My only true complaint is that I've never been in as much pain as when she does my blowout and washing. Ouch! Visit 2: I came in for a routine trim but I guess Jess forgot that I was trying to grow my hair out even though I expressed I only wanted to trim less than half an inch because by the time she was finished it was just as short as when I cut it the first time. Again, ouch on the handling of my poor scalp. (in her defense, I never said anything about the pain) At this point I I really wanted to find a new stylist and or salon but I decided to give the her one more shot. THE HORRIBLE Color and Bangs Visit (June): BANGS: I showed her a few pictures of what I wanted for straight across with a choppy edge but she just did one cut and boom. done. I didn't have the nerve to tell her I hate my bangs. COLOR: - I had seen some good photos on color so I did days of research and set my heart on 4 sample photos. This is where I decided she wasn't the right stylist for me. When I called for my appt. I told them my hair had never been dyed before and that I wanted purple balayage. Jess told me she could do it and we scheduled an appt. Never having dyed my hair before, I put my complete trust in Jess that she could deliver what I asked for (photos of my expectations and what I got in a submitted photo). - I felt like she was in a hurry when bleaching my hair (the blonde was a little dark), and then completely left out the fact that they were out of purple dye. Instead of letting me know this fact and discussing what I wanted, she decides to take it upon herself to "mix purple toner" (once again refer to that picture). When the toner does not cover all of my healthy ends she cuts off about 2 inches from my hair. Remember, I trying to grow my hair out! - When I look at my hair dried in the mirror I could not hide the pure disappointment in my eyes. She dyed my hair red! RED! and continuously insisted, up until I paid, that it was purple!!! I am an art teacher...I know what purple looks like and that was not it! - The horror on my face and painfully forced smile I guess guilt-ed her into offering to color my hair purple free of charge in a correction visit. I would have never been back if not for the fact it was going to be free. I vowed the moment she lied about the color that I would never again spend a dime at Studio A. Please reader, look at the photo in order to truly know my pain. I wanted to love this place. I really did. I booked an appointment with Studio A Salon after reading numerous glowing reviews and decided to give it a try after a botched "balayage" job that resulted in highlights. I was so excited at the thought of finally getting my hair color fixed. Setting: Aesthetically, the salon setting is beautiful. I adore the white color scheme, minimal design and clean look. It definitely has a modern, contemporary and trendy feel to it which I love. They also offer complimentary refreshments such as water or tea while you wait which is nice. The massage chairs while you shampoo are also a plus. Initial: I booked my appointment with Yessenia. I came in with dark brunette hair with golden highlights. I told her exactly what I wanted, which was an ombre/balayage with medium ash brown at the top and medium ash blonde at the bottom. She informed me that would it take up to 2-3 sessions to achieve that, since my natural hair color is a dark brown. I appreciated that she was straightforward and was completely fine with it when she told me. The stylist was nice but we barely talked throughout the process. I had to initiate the conversation with her, asking her where she was from, what kind of tool she was using, etc. I really like when hair stylists educate me during the process but I didn't receive that. Honestly, I felt awkward when I asked questions. Process: The process took 4 hours, flipping between me and another client. Oh man. This had to be one of the most PAINFUL experiences I've ever had, from the coloring, shampooing to the blowout. I actually said "Ow!" several times but she would just respond with "Sorry!" and then continue pulling hard on my hair. My scalp felt extremely sensitive and I was afraid every time she grabbed my hair strands. She stated "Your scalp must be sensitive." No. If you punch someone in the face, you don't tell them that their face is sensitive! Next, I told her that I wanted my bangs to be left alone, which she did. However, the balayage was blended all the way up to my roots so now it looks strange: my bangs are dark brown and the top of my head has balayage/lighter color. Check out the pictures. I was hoping for something closer to the pics I provided which was a noticeable medium brown at the top and then gradually blended into a lighter color. I didn't care if my hair was warm toned at this point, I just wanted it to be a gradual blend. Nope. Didn't happen. Don't get me wrong, the blowout was lovely, the color was pretty (despite being on the warmer side) and the stylist was nice. However, it wasn't balayaged/ombred the way I want it to. Maybe she was expecting for me to grow my hair out? Not sure. I still haven't decided if I want to come back or not for my second session. I can't justify spending another $170 coloring job here or recommending anyone else. If you do book, book it with another stylist there. I'm just really disappointed in the outcome of my hair. read more

I found Studio A Salon on Yelp with amazing reviews. The location was easy to find and parking is adequate for the area and size of the building. Most of the staff were friendly and I was always offered something to drink. I suppose I don't have thick skin and/or when I am told that everyone is friendly, I expect southern hospitality; I did not get that vibe, which is somewhat fine, I guess. No one was rude, at least. The space is beautifully decorated. The equipment looks state of the art and those massage chairs were really nice. I only had a haircut from Angel. I did expect it to be pretty pricey, and I guess I got what I paid for. I loved the turn out. Angel also used product to make my hair feel silky smooth when it was originally pretty dry. I asked for a dramatic haircut. From the beginning Angel was working quickly. It slipped my mind to take a before (length) picture of my hair from the nervousness and excitement of the cut. But Angel didn't even offer to take a picture. What I did not like from my experience was that Angel did not seem like he was talkative (which seemed like he wasn't friendly), so I had to attempt to make small talk, but that didn't last long. I'm not sure if he is non-expressive and appears to be unfriendly, was having a bad day, or I was discriminated because I kept asking for the price. I had to ask him what product was used on my hair instead of him educating me. I wish that he would have taught me more about how to take care of my hair without me asking him to. I wish he would have taught me more about hair in general. But what was most disappointing from this experience is that Angel basically burned my scalp with the blow dryer not once, not twice, but at least in three different spots on my head. I did not want to complain because I trusted his technique and skills. I did twitch and squirm and he apologized, but if one was to do hair as a profession, you should know to not hurt the scalp. Currently, parts of my head feels slightly raw, but I have a high pain tolerance so I'm okay. Again, I still love my haircut. Angel did a great job on the cut...but watch out for his blow outs. You might have to run out of the chair before he gets to finish. If/when I decide to come back, I would like to try someone else. read more

If I could, I would leave a 4.8, but I love my hair SO MUCH that any misgivings can basically be overlooked. I found Lew Derkowski through seeing one of my Facebook friends post about her hair (which looked great). I should start by saying that a) I am of mixed heritage and have very curly, textured hair, and b) I never, ever go to salons because I assume people will not know how to handle my hair nor do I do anything fancy with my hair anyway. I decided I wanted to dye my dark hair a much lighter honey-blonde color (think: Beyonce). I had already been through HELL with two other stylists out of town over the past 6 months trying to get what I wanted (i.e. not the tacky streaks I came in with), so this was a last-ditch effort before I pitifully box-dyed my hair back to dark brown. I was extremely specific with multiple pictures showing Lew the color and style that I wanted. With me being very poorly versed in salon/style/color speak, Lew explained everything to me in layman's terms, which was much appreciated. He is extremely personable and very present on social media (add him!!). He also takes time to look at pictures and ask the customer their preferences to give them exactly what they want. Both appointments were relaxed and I felt like he really paid attention to me while I was in the chair, as opposed to some stylists that flip back and forth between many customers). Small con: It was a 2-appointment process when it only really needed to be one (which I didn't expect, but I was kind of my fault since I booked the appointment incorrectly), but I almost wish I had just cancelled and stuck to just putting my hair through 1 extra round of coloring. All in all LOVED the experience. Can't speak for the whole salon (which is super nice and clean), but Lew is GREAT. Highly recommend him, even for my curly girls!!! read more

I've never had any hairdresser ask about my previous color done which I believe gave an insight on what my hair has been thru and what was the best remedy for it. I saw Bryan for a haircut and face-framing highlights in July. He did a great job chopping 10 inches off but I wasn't totally satisfied with the color of the highlights. I have medium brown hair and the highlights ended up being more of a yellow/brassy tone, which I'm not a fan of because it clashes with my olive skin tone. I walked away a bit disappointed with the color after paying $190. I decided to return 3 days later to get a free toner after calling to express my dissatisfaction, which I appreciated. It was during that appointment that I explained to Bryan that I wanted to add a little more highlights and go a bit brighter but ashier. He explained that because the face-framing highlights were more balayage and not actual color (with foils), I'd have to come back another time to do that. Fine, was totally ok with that. I got the toner done and scheduled an appointment for the first week of August to get the color. When I arrived for my second session with Bryan, I was a bit nervous because I wasn't sure how things would turn out after the first appointment but I had enough confidence in Bryan to go through with it. He mentioned that after I first came in, so many customers came in asking for the same look (short hair and face-framing highlights) and said they were probably inspired by Dua Lipa. When he said that, I laughed and said that I thought her highlights were too extreme and that's not the look I was going for. I provided a picture of the look I wanted to achieve but the end result was not what I was expecting. I didn't want to hurt his feelings by asking him to redo it after sitting there for over 3 hours. I felt I looked like Dua Lipa :(. After paying $230, I left dissatisfied again. I thought I could maybe live with the color until I saw some friends the following weekend (who are loyal Studio A customers) and they recommended I go back to get a color correction immediately. I called the studio and explained my situation and they said I would be able to come in for a free color correction with the same stylist. I would be charged the full-service fee if I saw a different stylist. I scheduled the appointment to get it corrected with Bryan. The next day, the studio notified me that because it had been too long since my last appointment (9 days), the service wouldn't be considered a color correction but an additional color service and I would be charged for it ($65-$130). Needless to say, I was disappointed to hear that after I was initially told I wouldn't be charged for the color correction. I tried to negotiate a free toner after providing pics of my hair but to no avail. They said I would be charged $65 for a toner. Mind you, I've gotten a toner done for much less at other places. After paying $400+, I really expected this studio to be more accomodating. I was willing to work with Bryan again to achieve the desired result. It's my understanding stylists appreciate your honest opinion and the opportunity to correct anything a customer is dissatisfied with because that's how they hone their craft, and in doing so, it prevents customers from leaving a bad review online. He really is a pleasant guy to work with and again, the haircut was great...the color not so much. Albeit, I should have expressed my dissatisfaction sooner rather than later the second time around but I was really hoping Studio A would have been more understanding. The worst customer service experience I have ever had at a hair salon. Went for hair color and they would not color it as they said it would not take but basically they did not want to take the extra time to do the extra necessary steps to get it where I wanted it. They took 15 minutes to give me negativity because they did not have the time for me AND for 15 minutes of their time they made me pay $50 consultation fee! Absolutely ridiculous! Nice salon, not thrilled with the cut. The salon is super nice and they are all very friendly. It's very chic so you get that sense of being pampered. That said, the cut I paid $85 for was not worth it. Jessica was super nice, but my hair is not super even and it's very blunt. I will not be going back. read more

As a full time working mom being able to enjoy me time is always relaxing. Walking into Studio A always helps...especially those relaxing massage shampoo chairs! I enjoy my monthly treatments, and blowouts with Yesenia and David is my color and cut go to Guru. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff who are always up to date on the current styles and trends, especially since my hair is naturally curly the team knows how to keep it stylish. I've needed to make this change for a while now. Gari is no longer working here, but no worries because all the staff here is great. I have been using Bunmi for about a year and she is amazing. She is sweet as can be and always makes sure I'm completely happy with my hair. I have sent so many of my friends here and they are equally as happy!
