**My advice: Ask the person cutting your hair to TALK LESS and FOCUS MORE on the actual cut, service, and experience.** 0 stars if Yelp allowed. I straightened my hair for the first time since the cut this past week and I think it's important I leave this review. I was going to let it go and let my hair grow out (again), but looking at it right now and reflecting on the experience... well it was ridiculous and I need to share so anyone who comes here is prepared. If someone had written this, I would not have gotten my cut here. The cut is so horrendous, I'm almost (sad) laughing. Either anything that is not a 5-star rating is somehow removed or I got the wrong person - the entire experience was bad in retrospect, and I've only fully thought it through now. I asked for a straight line trim on my below-the-shoulder length hair. Simple. However, when you look at my hair, the left side is uneven and one full inch longer than the right side; and the right side is all kinds of different choppy lengths. Which he initially kept blaming on the haircut from TEN months ago. Totally wrong, you could see the new snips he made on the right side of the hair. Plus, the goal was to do a straight line, so I'm not sure how I ended up with an even more uneven line if it was a straight cut. Rather than get upset with my lopsided haircut, which was just supposed to be literally a straight line trim (no layers, nothing, we even discussed 1/2 to 1 inch trim and that he felt bad that's all he was doing for $55), and in the off-chance the person was having a totally off day, I am going to list all the things this place needs to focus on (maybe they can improve for the future), or that I should've used as red flags, or, YOU as the client should be aware of: 1. Make sure the station is clean (there was hair from the day before) 2. When you get the shampoo, make sure they actually shampoo the hair (literally placed the shampoo blob on my head, smoothed it across a few times without getting to the scalp, washed it out, called it a day... there was still some left when I got back to the chair) 3. Stay with the client (don't go on a call or walk out the door for whatever reason... focus! Or schedule a different time for an appointment.) 4. When hair is being blowdried, the hot air should not blow directly into your ears repeatedly (so bad that he first told me "looks like you don't blow dry your hair" and then as I covered my ears, gave me cotton balls because it was going straight into my ears... how do you not know how to blow dry hair?) 5. Hair brushes and tools should be clean (it was a clutter and mess drawer and didn't look like it's even cleaned periodically, yuck!) 6. Bonked me in the head with the straightening iron when he brought it over - come on, lol. It hurt but I ignored it. Maybe make sure the person knows how to use their tools without hurting you. 7. A straight line is a straight line, that should not have been hard (he shared that it was all I wanted and he felt bad). With all those years of experience, it didn't seem like a complicated request. 8. Don't ask so many personal questions. Or rather, ask the person if they want to chat first, they may just end up talking because you are and feel obligated. Or do a chat after! But if you do ask questions, listen to the answer - again, stay focused on the haircut! I had to keep repeating things he'd already asked. 9. Don't gaslight people - he kept saying that the uneven layers on my right side were from the haircut I had in early August 2025, 10 months ago. My hair had grown out quite a bit, and he was talking so much that he kept slowly trimming the right side, I watched him do it obliviously which is why I finally told him to stop. That's when I had noticed that after he straightened one chunk, he'd trim it just a little, but little by little there were trims. You don't trim and straighten back and forth. You straighten then LOOK. And then trim the longer parts once. I know he realized he messed up because he didn't charge me and kept saying he was sorry, while saying it was from my previous haircut from 10 months ago. No it was not, LOL. But I walked out with a terrible experience and it was very upsetting. I was originally conflicted on leaving this review because he was nice and didn't charge me, and maybe had an off day since he seems to have done this for a very long time. However, that shouldn't mean he's distracted, unfocused, and doing a poor job, all of which happened in my experience. My recommendation - talk less and focus more on the cut and giving the client a decent experience. read more

He cuts my whole family and did my wedding. My Mom and daughters also come to get their haircuts and colors. I cannot thank Curtis enough. Since moving back to California from Georgia my hair has become extremely dry, brittle, and so high maintenance. The humidity in Georgia kept my hair more manageable but the dry California air has only made it worse. Between raising three kids, building my business, and keeping up with everything at home, I stopped looking after my own hair. It got to the point where I was ready to shave it all off while waiting for the day I could finally afford a haircut. Curtis stepped in and gave me a fresh start. More than just a haircut, he gave me the gift of space to breathe in the middle of my busy bedtime routine with my family. Noticed I was getting split ends and really wanted to sport some shorter hair as we head into warmer weather. I'm new to Pasadena, but knew prices would be a nightmare. That is until I found Studio 55; my haircut was $45 and I was very pleased with the results and attention the owner gave. A lot of other local spots charged anywhere between $20-$50 more and here I felt the owner did a good job and didn't blow dry straighten my hair. Nearly every salon I've been to my entire life will straighten my hair after a cut, but he used a diffuser so I could rock my curls without worrying about heat damage. I also really liked him! He was knowledgeable about hair, gave personalized advice, and noticed I was a low maintenance haircare kind of girl. Unlike a lot of other salons, he didn't push any products or treatments onto me. I do get haircuts very infrequently and he was understanding of that too so he didn't suggest an appointment too soon. Curtis is incredible! He has done my hair for eight years. He is Salon 55, a treasure nestled in another salon at 10 S Mentor Ave, Pasadena, CA. I have incredibly long, black hair (way below my waist). Not easy to do, but Curtis does a great job. He colors it, trims it and conditions it until it ends up shiny and as soft as baby hair--and he does all this at a very fair, more than fair price. I could not do it anywhere else for the same price and be as happy. I'm moving to Northern California from Pasadena and excited about my going, except for leaving my great hairdresser behind. I'm sad about my hair. I went to Curtis twice. The first time was for the haircut. I showed him a photo and he cut my hair according to the photo. I got what I asked for, but I wasn't happy with the results. I couldn't explain what I wanted exactly, which is on me, bc I was exhausted and I couldn't think after work. I just knew I wanted a cut and I went in hoping that the hairdresser would be able to "figure out" what I wanted. Why? Because the most amazing hairdressers I used to frequent in SF and SD cut my hair in ways better than I could explain. Again, that's on me (my fault #2), bc I shouldn't expect all hairdressers to be intuitive. Truly. I should've been more certain, which I was not! I should've been more honest about the results, which I was not. My fault #3. When I saw the results, I wasn't happy. The two layers didn't fall right in my eyes--it looked like they were sitting on top of each other bc they were blunt at the end. Which is how it looks in the photo. My fault. OK, so I voiced my dislike about it to Curtis and he told me it was because of how I was pushing my hair to the front of my face and the way I was MOVING my hair was wrong. He brushed my hair in different ways to show how the layers fall differently based on the brushing technique. I told him that I don't do anything to my hair--no product, no styling. Just comb it and done. So he went on to show me how to brush it in certain ways. Fed up, I directly asked him what should I do and his answer was that he can't tell me what I should do bc, essentially, I'm my own person who makes her own decisions and that I have this nervous energy, and I keep pushing my hair to the front. .........what? I literally asked him for advice on how to brush my hair and he couldn't provide an answer. I am willing to learn!! And it came back to me being at fault (moving my hair wrong).It was so annoying. I was honest when I told him that I thought he was doing good work on my hair in the salon. I honestly thought it was my fault for letting the layers fall down improperly. So, thinking that I was at fault, and also frustrated, I decided to leave and pay. I came home and my boyfriend liked it. I became happier! xD But, then.... I showered the next morning. I combed my hair. It dried. And then......my roommate asked me if I cut my own hair myself. He wasn't being malicious. He was making an observation. He confirmed my fear that something about my haircut was wrong. I called Curtis that day and told him the problem. He fit me in at 6:30 PM the same day. I went to see him and told him that I think I needed "pointy ends"--I apologized for not knowing the proper jargon but did my best to describe what I wanted. The ends were blunt so I needed them to not be blunt. I also apologized for being tired yesterday and being uncertain and assured him that he did cut my well, that it was my fault for not knowing what I wanted to begin with. But now that I was back and I knew what I wanted--"pointy ends"--I trusted that Curtis would deliver great results. I was sat in the chair and he gave me some jagged edges. It looked good in the hair salon. I Told Curtis he was great and he didn't charge me to fix it. I came home and saw in my mirror that it was NOT good. If you filter one $ sign and hair salon in Pasadena, Studio 55 will be on top of the list. In fact, that is what brought me here. I wanted a place where I can touch up my roots for a good price and Studio 55 was the winner. During my first visit to Curtis, he was able to do my color and a quick haircut in like under 1 hour. In fact, he moved so fast and talked so fast that he scared me a bit. I had another person blow dry my hair and that guy seemed to hate Curtis which was super weird. On my second visit, I came in early so there were no customers in the salon. Curtis made some weird statements to me relating to race and then he bashed one of his employees which wasn't really any of my business and I shouldn't have to listen to that. Worst of all, he put mousse in my wet hair and scrunched it up like we are in the 80's using a diffuser attachment and sent me home like that all dripping and looking like a freak. I was traveling that day so I had to run home and blow dry my own hair and get all that mouse out.
