Please do yourself the favor of booking an appointment with Stevie. Let her work her magic on you. My first visit with her was 10/10 better than I ever imagined. I had gone elsewhere in PDX and they did not deliver what I requested. I had multiple colors left in my hair and was coming in a hot mess. I sat in Stevies chair for a good while. She went over expectations and pricing with me. She didn't want me to be upset if we couldn't get the end result I wanted and let me know due to the damage that was done to my hair previously we might need multiple sessions. Well, I think we were both surprised when she was able to achieve my end goal in this one session. I was so happy and truly felt like myself when leaving. I love Stevie and I'm so happy I met her. Not sure how to rate this salon. The salon itself is lovely. Parking is pretty tricky given the location - I've had to leave 10 extra minutes to find a spot most times I've gone. The low rating is for customer service. I had been going to see Caity Hubert and loved every cut I got, found her warm, friendly, and appreciated how well she worked with my thin and fine hair. I made an appointment a few weeks back and there was no one at the salon when I got there, just a locked door. This review has taken far too long for me to write! Emelia is a goddess of styling and she will set you right for a very reasonable price. She is not afraid of my difficult hair and gets excited at the prospect of a challenge. Beautiful work on several different cuts, colors, and styles. Last time she spent five hours bleaching the under layer of my hair and dyeing it green, yellow, and purple. Well over a month later, the colors are almost as vivid as the day she put them in. I found Bridget through a deal she was offering, and I'm so glad I did! After a not-so-great experience with a previous stylist in Portland, I was on the hunt for someone to cut my hair and touch up/lighten up my balayage a bit before a business trip. I poked through her instagram and reviews here on yelp and sent her a text explaining what I was looking for, a rooty, icy blonde, and she was happy to accommodate me. The salon was fairly busy on Saturday afternoon when I went in, and I met Bridget right away. She offered me coffee (bonus points!) and got right to work doing a "foilyage"--basically a mix between balayage and foil highlights. The result was gorgeous! She kept the roots as I had them but blended the color upward, adding so much dimension all over and treating my hair with Olaplex throughout to keep it extra healthy. As for the cut, I'm thrilled. I'm trying to get my hair extra long, and Bridget was sure to take the minimal amount off the ends. She also "took the weight out of it" by cutting what appeared to be diagonal layers throughout. I have a lot of hair and it gets kind of poofy so this was a brilliant solve without taking too much length. The deal I got was great, but I'd definitely pay full price in the future as this lady clearly knows her stuff (and got it right on the first try, something I'm always nervous about as a new client). Wow. Weird location, easy to miss, but...FIND IT! I had my hair cut and styled by Lauren, who used a razor to fine tune my entire do pretty much. She gave me an excellent massage, talked to me about product(didn't pressure me) and was so careful about the details. I left that day and headed to work(a restaurant) and received 2 compliments from strangers that had just been dining. When does that happen on a first day? Anyway, I keep getting compliments, and it's rad. Something that surprised me is that she took my cut in a different direction than I was originally planning on-I mean not drastic, I definitely agreed to the hints she gave-and it still turned out well. I had a job interview and I needed a haircut. Not only am I trying to save money . . . it's almost impossible to get in with anyone really good without waiting at least a week. Then Groupon offered a deal: a good one. I bought it (around 8AM) and called-- Penelope called me back within a few hours. Talk about a quick turnaround! :) She gave me a 9AM booking (thank goodness-- a hairdresser who is a morning person!) for the next day. Despite my nerves about this interview, I felt happier and more excited than I have in a long time. Hair is that important to me. Some backstory: I am going gray and I kind of like it. However, going gray also means I have these weird cowlicks on both sides of my head. As I normally part my hair on the side, this poses an issue. Penelope took one look at my hair and said, "Why not part it in the middle?" Why not indeed? I am a writing teacher: I am constantly showing my students how to re-read. "Everything is a text" I tell them. Why I couldn't practice what I preach with my own hair I don't know. So right away, I was thrilled to have Penelope re-read my hair for me-- she helped me re-see it. I never know what to say when a hairdresser asks me what I want. Therefore, when she asked me, I mumbled something about liking my last haircut and just trimming the ends, Penelope took one chunk of my hair in her capable, experienced fingers (you know how you can just tell when someone knows what she is doing? There's something about the way a good hairdresser touches your hair) and asked, "You don't want me to make these layers more pronounced?" (Note: She said something far more descriptive-- but that was the essence.) I have flat, thin hair-- I have love it when a stylist to ask me something like that! But most of them seem scared by my hair-- I've only had one hairdresser (my long-time hairdresser in Seattle) who ever wanted to take any risks with it. "You don't have hair like Jennifer Aniston," one fraidy cat told me in the early 90's, "so I can't give you a haircut like hers." At any rate, Penelope gave me a beautiful haircut AND showed me how to style it: "Fun hair" (parted in the middle!) and "Professional" hair (parted on the side.) She took the time to show me how to tame the cowlicks for the "professional" haircut. Normally, no one notices when I get a haircut: EVERYONE noticed. My students-- the woman working the desk at the yoga studio . . . even someone from my yoga class (to whom I've never spoken) said, "Your new haircut looks great!" The best comment, however, was from one of my students, that afternoon. She said to me, wonderingly, "Your hair . . . it looks so . . . Smooth." (If I could italicize smooth I would. Pretend I did.) For the rest of the day, privately, I kept tossing my head and taking self portraits with my cell phone. I could say a lot more about our 45 minute visit, but I'll keep it brief: Penelope had some great ideas about color and foils to help me gray more gracefully . . . great suggestions about product (and not washing my hair as much-- long hair requires less frequent washing) . . . and she showed me a few alternate styles. A year after moving to the Portland area, I've FINALLY found my new stylist! I am excited to see what further wisdom Penelope has as my hair. :) Thank you so much! read more

I love Strut. (The only reason I haven't been back is due to no show shame) Arno does a wonderful job. He's repaired a color issue and does the best curly cut I've had in years. Very friendly and very fair. I also saw Bridget when she was there and I recommend her as well. I am always comfortable here, I have curly "mixed kid" hair and they've never done me wrong. Emilia is one of the most talented hair stylists---she's really a hair *artist*--that I have ever known. She not only completely reversed what I had thought to be an irreparably botched haircut from a salon a few weeks prior, but she also created a custom color combination for me from scratch. Oh my word, I cannot thank Emelia enough for saving my hair! She seriously worked wonders on my thick, coarse, and dry asian hair. After months and months of surfin' the web comparing prices of different salons and reading reviews on the best spots in town to get an ombre done, I finally found Emelia at Strut Salon. From the very first moment we were introduced to the end of my appointment, she was absolutely the sweetest. Emelia was honest and caring from the get-go, and really took the time to listen to my hair wants and needs, and reflected very carefully on what to do before actually diving in. From the way she spoke and contemplated all the different types of techniques that could be done to my hair to achieve the look that I wanted, I knew she took her work seriously. At one point before starting she even told me that the ombre color I envisioned may not be achievable due to all these different colors already in my hair from other stylists and box dye, so I was definitely prepared for the worst and a bit saddened, but I was thankful that she was straightforward with me and being honest. Emelia somehow managed though to make the impossible possible and in some way or form, she worked her hair magic, and I truly could not be happier with the end result. She offered to even clean up my hair cut since the last lady I went to didn't do a great job. Being a new client to the salon, booking an appointment online was so quick and easy! Their website is user-friendly and provides a great amount of information. Once you've decided on a stylist and service, you have options of days and times to book an appointment. And once you've scheduled an appointment they send you verification messages and reminders which is pretty cool. If all else fails, you can always contact them via telephone, email, instagram, facebook, etc. - so no excuses on not being able to book. Parking is in the neighborhood which can be tough because of the lack of spots, BUT you can park in the parking lot right in front of cricket - I believe they share. For new clients especially - describing a little about what you want and what type of hair you have in the comments portion of the online booking really helps them out. So for all you ladies and gents out there, especially for the asian ladies who need some TLC on their locks, go to Strut and book with Emelia! You really will not regret it. And if you can't book with her, the rest of the stylists are awesome too. 2nd Strut review but this time I had my nails done. My hair guy moved to Venus Alure on Belmont (see review). The women who did our nails were very nice but it was not the best pedi/mani I've had. Not only did it take 2 hours but I didn't feel like the service was as thorough as others I've been to. And, to top it all off, the woman who did my friend's pedicure kept texting and using her cell phone, which we both thought was completely unprofessional. I'd say save your money (we had a groupon but I think it is $40-$50 for a mani/pedi) and go somewhere better. read more

Never in a million years would I have come to this salon had it not been for Groupon. Let me tell you, folks, that would have been a mistake. I chose Melissa to be my stylist. Not only is she sweet as pie, this woman has really mastered her trade. I gave her a vague description of what I wanted (please Melissa, help me to not look like an old soccer mom!), and she gave me the best haircut I have EVER had. I have an enormous quantity of hair. Ladies who are in my position will know what that means. For those of you who are not, it means poufy hair. It's wretched. No matter how hot that flat iron gets, the pouf remains. I am SO thankful that I found Patrick. He is my new go-to! I booked with him via Instagram and we briefly chatted about what we were going to do. He was able to see me that very next day- which was perfect for me! I went into the salon with a blend of raspberry/lilac/light blue hair with my blonde roots showing. My goal was to start my journey back to platinum, with a lilac overtone in the meantime. It all seemed pretty straightforward until my hair turned BRIGHT sea foam green when he used the color remover. It was really surprising and quite difficult to get out. It was looking like I might need to come back for another appointment at this point. He was determined to give me something I was happy with before I left, though. I had total faith in him that I would leave there happy, and I was right! He had to take a few extra steps along the way but he got me to a beautiful dusty lavender color and my hair still feels healthy. He was so apologetic for things taking a bit longer than expected- but I didn't understand why! Something unexpected happened and he was able to roll with it and still come up with a beautiful finished product. Overall I am so happy with my experience. For someone who is newer to the industry, he certainly seems to have a natural talent and know what he's doing! He is very personable, easy to chat with, respectful of your time, and truly talented. Emelia is an amazing hair artist and has creative thoughts and ideas. She fixed and updated, created exactly what i wanted and helped me decide what would look good on me based on images that even i couldn't decide what i wanted, but liked parts of each. I am grateful to finally finally find a stylist and hair artist that is a fit for me! The colors turned out so well, the design of the color patters was awesome and turned out better than i hoped. she created a style just for me that fits me, that i was hoping for. I am so happy to find Patrick as my stylist. He really listened to what I wanted for my hair, he was also very easy to talk to and there was so awkward conversation or silence. He was running ahead of schedule and sent me text to let me know I could come in a little early if I wanted, which I really appreciated. I was very happy with my experience.
