I have been visiting this salon since 2005... twenty years now. Today I had a head spa appointment. It was one hour of luxurious head-focused massage, and treatments. Scalp, muscles, even my ears. Sherry brought it back from Japan and it is incredible. I would take this over a full body massage any day of the week. This salon uses goldwell color. The owner is a trainer nationwide. She has a rigorous apprenticeship program. She is a force of nature. I cannot recommend this salon highly enough. read more

What a great salon location in PDX! They offer a wide variety of ways to pamper yourself from blow outs to facials to even Japanese head/scalp massages. The place is big and open and bright and very modern feeling. The spa area is secluded from the rest of the salon, which makes it feel more dark and quiet and cozy and private. I don't usually leave reviews anymore, but when I do, it's for a most excellent experience. I started getting my hair done by Brandon a couple of months ago. My partner (who has been seeing him for a year or so for his haircuts) had been encouraging me to get my hair done by Brandon. On a whim one afternoon, I decided to finally book an appointment with him and I'm really glad I did! Brandon is welcoming, funny AF and is so good at what he does. I truly have a great experience with Brandon every time I sit in his chair at Urbaca (which by the way, I love all the plants and how spacious the salon is!) So far, I have gone in for a haircut, a styling lesson (he taught me how I can efficiently do beach waves at home), and most recently a blond ombré on my dark hair. Brandon was very gentle on my hair yet was able to get it very blond in just a few hours. He is very precise and creative. Moved from San Francisco with a fairly complicated color and cut so I was anxious about finding a new stylist. Thankfully, I was introduced to Antonio! He is a gem, loves his work, and isn't too humble to ask for guidance from others. He did a great job with the ombre from dark red to blond, plus a precise cut. (Only reason this isn't a 5 star review is that his dye work could be a little cleaner as I tend to go home with stained ears.) This is a wonderful place. Everyone is so proficient and skilled, but Gretchen especially is amazing. She has seen me go from short to long, from natural to color, and has had such really good advice in each step. She totally listens to what you want, clarifies with her suggestions, and then performs her magic to make you look gorgeous. Indeed, I sometimes call her Professor Gretchen because of what she has taught me about at-home hair techniques so you don't only look amazing after you go there.. For eyebrows, Sherry also is truly wonderful. If you have any question about taming the jungle above your peepers, just tell her your parameters, lie back, and with a few quick rips you're ready to sign up to model your forehead. The salon has tons of urban chic vibe & great high-touch customer service, totally without breaking the bank. AND **free parking**, almost unheard of in this neighborhood. They also do great makeup consultations & special occasions, and sometimes do Meetup.com classes on ask sorts of topics. Love my hair! I booked a same day appointment for a cut and color which I normally haven't been able to do since my hair is about 2 ft long/hits just above the bum. I was a little hesitant since most places that are good are booked at least for a month. I initially wanted a balayage but due to my bleached ends my stylist gave his educated opinion of not going through with it. I was a little disappointed but throughout the whole process he was very communicative as we switched from my initial color wants to a different one (my natural color not balayage). Overall great experience and even though COVID restrictions have been lifted they still kept their place very clean and had you wash your hands before entering + stylists wore masks! I was visiting Portland and needed a haircut. Urbaca was very accomodating and fit me in the same day. Eve who answered my call was pleasant. They took all the precautions for COVID - right from temp checks to sanitization. I felt very safe during my visit. Adam was my hairstylist and he gave me a very good cut and made me feel very comfortable. He was friendly and professional and gave me the cut that I had asked for. It is hard when you are not seeing your regular stylist and you are in a new city and don't know if the stylist will understand what you are looking for. I have had my share of bad cuts so was skeptical but Adam was fantastic. Highly recommended. The place was clean and hygienic and the plants there were so soothing. If I ever were in Portland again and need a cut I would definitely go back to Urbaca read more

This review is long overdue, I bookmarked Urbaca Salon so I could write them a raving review! Since the whole city is snowed in, it's time to catch up on my yelping! I took my husband and my son to Urbaca for his first haircut!!!! Gretchen cut my husband's hair first so my son could watch his daddy get his haircut. :) So cute! When it came time to cut his hair, they let him play with the water where he would usually get his hair washed (he was too small to actually sit back and get his hair washed), he really enjoyed playing and it helped put him at ease. The actual haircut part was fine, he sat in my husband's lap and got a basic haircut - toddlers are wiggly. :) We saved some of his locks and took some pictures. Urbaca is hands down the most modern, clean, well laid out, naturally lit salon I've ever stepped foot in. Not only is it beautiful, it feels open and airy and the staff is incredibly welcoming. They take care of your coat and offer you coffee/tea/water/wine as soon as you check in. Those leather chairs in the lounge are so comfy! Laci is my stylist and I'm ashamed to admit I found her using a living social deal the salon did to get her some clientele as she was new to town a few years ago. I'm proud to say nobody else has cut, colored or styled my hair since. The only reason it took me three years to write this review is because I just joined yelp. Before Laci, the only stylist I truly loved was when I lived in Japan. Nobody came close to cutting my Asian hair the way he did until Laci, and the kicker? She got me into color. We started with highlights and now I'm all about the ombré. She is always smiling, honest and extremely talented. I'm always surprised by how time flies when I visit the salon. She makes it go by fast with good conversation and her educational hair tips. I hate saying this because I know you're supposed to go more often, but I honestly get my hair cut at most four times a year. But I bring this up because Laci's cuts always last that long and still look great. Being Asian, I hated coloring my hair because it always turned out to be this super brassy, coppery, orange-ish color. Since Laci, though, it's maintained the perfect blonde/caramel color. She recommended I try the KMS leave-in conditioner to keep it healthy and it's worked so well. One bottle lasts me 6 months-money well spent if you ask me. Laci came in an hour before opening at 9 am to curl my hair for my engagement shoot last Friday. At this point, I just tell her a general idea of what I'm going for and let her do her thing. I completely trust her. She curled my hair and at first I was worried because the curls were too tight. I specifically wanted loose voluminous curls and she explained she did it this way so they'd last throughout the shoot. She wasn't wrong: they loosened up over time and stayed good until 5pm! I've been going to Daria Daniel for years, at another salon she was a rockstar at. I recently found her at Urbaca, and was very happy to be reunited. Daria is awesome. She is a Goldwell goddess, and even though my hair is BLACK naturally, she was able to take my fickle little mane to a beautiful rich blonde - and back - and look very elegant and not brassy a bit. I went with this salon based on reviews and the feel that I got when I called them to talk about my hair goals. They are a truly warm, genuine,,down to earth and very talented salon which is extremely rare to find! I couldn't be happier with the results. I requested Antonio because I wanted a cut and style similar to the photos posted of his work (I went on their Facebook page to get a better idea of my options). He gave me a mid length layered/textured and a lot of volume. It looks amazing when waves are put into it. He also put in two shades of blonde-one light neutral sand blonde and the other a low light blonde also neutral. It's the perfect amount of dimension and perfect tone and shade of blondes-not too warm or cool. I have been to at least 10 different high end salons in the Portland area but I will be sticking with Antonio and Urbaca. read more

I've been coming to Urbaca for about 8 years. John has been my stylist for about 7 of them. I have dark, curly, ethnic hair which can be a challenge for some stylists. Not for John. Over the years he has continued to find new and exciting ways to color and style my hair. The staff is up to date on all the latest techniques and have a great passion for what they do. They are also all very down to earth which can be hard to find in the sometimes snooty Pearl district. They also keep a wide variety of high quality hair products which I'm always scooping up. She is highly skilled, a true professional and very creative, yet grounded. She's a Goldwell instructor and always has great suggestions with regard to color and style for me. I have referred no fewer than 6 people to Jasmin - including my granddaughter for her first haircut. Even the fidgety, hyper-stranger-averse 13-month old in the chair failed to ruffle Jasmin's considerable cool.
