I just recently relocated to the Portland area from San Francisco. I had been going to my hair stylist in San Francisco for over 30 years! So, I was a bit at a loss about what to do with my hair. I'm Japanese-American but my stylist wasn't and he always knew what to do with my hair. But, looking for a new stylist I decided to try an Asian stylist. I liked the work that Jessica had up on Yelp, so I booked with her. I'm so glad I did! First, she is very personable; no attitude, just friendly and positive. Then she gave me a great cut. I'm so pleased with it...I took photos a couple of weeks after my cut so you can see it still looks great. Noriko is my new stylist, her job is very gentle, and put my hair together well. My hair has natural curl, very dry and thick, and she put some layers on the sides around my face, trimmed nicely (not too short). I got out from my yoga class this morning and my yoga teachers commended on my hair that My hair looks great right after the class (I just untied my buns and let it down, touch up with my fingers), so I wanted to make a review, how great job she did! read more

Im basing my review strictly on the quality of my cut with Koyote. Going into my appointment, my hair was almost mid-waist and fairly full. I had long layers and was looking for a trim with a "wispy" side bang, so when I had my hair up there was a small piece that would frame my face. I let Koyote know that I was getting my haircut a MONTH in advance of my sister's wedding and needed to keep the length. I showed her a few pictures and she said she could execute. Post haircut. I knew something was wrong immediately. As I previewed my hair at the salon I expressed that my layers were very dramatic. An entire corner of my hair was gone and the length was only maintained by a tiny portion of my entire hair. Basically, the layers framed my face under my chin and I had to grab ALL my hair from the back to show the length. I understand there's always a margin of error with haircuts and to not react until a few days. I waited two weeks until I realized the travesty that was my hair. I went into Ginger Salon to get a correction cut with a lead stylist. My meeting with this stylist validated how badly cut my hair was and I learned a lot about what went wrong. I learned that I do not have a lot of hair in the front of my face (point of reference ear) so I should NEVER have face framing layers otherwise it creates a mullet, and that any skilled stylist would know this. This is why a chunk of my hair looked like it was missing. I also learned I have a lot of hair but each hair is very fine, so my hair has to be treated like it's fine hair. Because my hair was not treated in this way, my ends were overly-textured and looked like they were not healthy. My stylist at Ginger was so taken-back by my hair and said she was so sorry this happened to me, she said she thought that I had bad extension when I took my hair out to show her the cut. My intention for this review is to emphasize the accountability a stylist has to owning whether they can execute a cut or not. If you know you don't have the skill level to cut someone's hair, let them know. Based on reviews, it seems like Koyote has done some really great cuts! She just wasn't the right stylist for me. Unfortunately this lack of communication led to mistrust and a horrible experience for me. In my pics you can see the cut transformation and also see that I had to lose probably 8 inches of hair which will take me a long time to grow back. KoiPod handled this okay. They gave me a refund but I never received an apology. read more

I followed Niko to Koipod from Propaganda Salon. He's been my stylist for years, and I absolutely love what he does with my hair. When I want to mix it up with a new cut or style, he's always collaborative -- helping me understand what will work with my hair. I can text him ideas in advance so he has time to think about it and provide feedback. A couple years ago he recommended a gorgeous strawberry blonde color, and I've been using that color ever since. I get so many compliments on it! I have an appointment with him this weekend, and I'm excited to try a new color. The salon itself is bright and welcoming. Annette at Koipod has has done my hair three times now. All three cuts were flawless and transformative. Annette has an innate attention to detail that makes all the difference if you usually keep your hair short. I've had various pixie cuts in my life and none have grown out as seamlessly (no weird in-between post-pixie mullet!). Also, fantastic and fun texture! She's really talented and I love the various incarnations of short haircut she's given me. Annette also amazing with color/bleaching too. My hair is currently an lovely bright violet/lavender shade. And again, it's complimented and enhanced with a cut that looks as polished as the color is magical. And finally, Annette has such a kind and professional demeanor that makes getting my hair done a lot of fun. She intuitive and relaxed, while still on her game. Also, I have to commend the entire Koipod staff for their consistent professionalism and friendliness. They are as a whole delightful and easygoing.Wonderful in person and on the phone! koipod is airy and lovely. the staff is kind and low key. the location is super good with a stumptown and food and a weird ass nickel arcade across the street. the first time i ever had an appointment with carl at koipod, i rolled up in there after an 8 hour barista shift with a side ponytail and rubber clogs on. i was exhausted and slightly dubious. i also had a the barista "brown finger" and a smear of chocolate up my left arm. i sat in the chair and carl, who looked like a character out of a john waters movie, slowly pulled my ratty hair out of the pony. i looked him straight in the eye an said "i am a leo, now can you cut a head of hair?". he looked right back at me, not even a single flinch and said, "honey my partner is a leo, if i can handle him, i can handle your hair!". sold. the next thing (and every thing since) he said to me was a mind blower, totally wacky and inappropriate and then oh joy of joys, i fell deeply into his pencil mustache and over sized black framed glasses. it was love. by love i mean i sit in a tree outside his house, make notes of everything he does and draw hearts around our names. carl gave me a haircut to end all haircuts. he left me breathless and beautiful. i was able to go 3 months without seeing carl and my hair continued to look fabulous until it was clear that the ends and layers just needed some lovin' and snippin'. he is a hair sculptress, a queen, a perfect and wonderful lamb of god. listen jerks, if you are a bitchface whiner or don't believe in talking trash and getting dirty, don't go to carl. if you are cool, funny, respectful and interesting, get thee to koipod. you will kiss my queenly robes after. or else. read more

Tony did a FANTASTIC job on my hair! I am new to Portland, & found Koipod using Yelp. All the reviews were pretty fantastic, so I asked the receptionist to place with me anyone who was availabe. I was booked with Tony, which worked out perfectly because he specializes in blonde hair (I had a full weave highlight in on top of a full head of brown hair, and it was fading) I had a picture of what I wanted, but knew it would take 2 or 3 visits to get all the way there. I asked his advice on how to walk out of the salon looking as (naturally) blonde as possible and he knew just what to do. He did an amazing job on my partial highlight and I will definately be back. I came from a really great salon in California that I had been faithful to for about 4 or 5 years, that used Bumble & Bumble products exclusively. It's a small team of individual stylists, each with their own personality (*Keeping *Our *Identity *Portland *Oregon *Designers). They share space and talent but vary in style and approach. I like them all. The friendly beverage-offering receptionists are on your side (I'm going to have to disagree with your perception, Melinda H. And I've been going here almost two years. Your experience sounds bizarrely off-base if look at the rest of the reviews). The salon has a modern but not hipster vibe and carries great product lines. I have been growing my hair out from pixie cut. You know when you get in the super-awkward mullet stage between pixie and chin-length? Yeah...my hair was in that stage when I finally couldn't stand it anymore and booked an appointment with Mary. I kind of expected a "meh" haircut for this in-between stage but I was super impressed. This looks like an intentional haircut and has looked nice for over a month! Usually a haircut starts looking bad within 2 weeks or so for me but Mary really knows what she's doing! Once, I thought it would be a good idea, and a good value to go get bangs cut at Bishops. Only $7 for a bang cut which could potentially change my haircut for the better--it seemed like a great idea! So I went to Bishops, Portland's "Rock and Roll Barbershop" and some barber of the rockabilly persuasion gave me bad bangs. I thought for sure I could fish them at home, and in my attempts ruined my good haircut. So now I had bad bangs and a bad haircut. Unfortunately, my favorite stylist Gwen at Burnside Proper was booked for a week, but closeby Koi Pod, which always looked cool and sleek from the outside, was willing to get me in within a few hours. The stylist was friendly and chatty and did a decent job of fixing my ruined locks. Although I wasn't converted to Koi Pod, I would recommend it for a haircut and once, they saved my head. read more

Found this place while surfing for good deals on Groupon- and here I am! This salon is clean, modern, friendly and in the heart of SE Portland- where everything is within walking distance. Great location, I love coming down here and walk around for the day. As far as the haircut goes, Toni knows exactly what she is doing. I never believed in showing pictures since everyone's hair grows differently- so I just told her how I am the laziest person in the world and asks her to give me an easy haircut that doesn't require time to style- and she delivered. Even got a full highlight and turns out fantastic because she knows how hair works! The whole process was so enjoyable- I didn't feel rush nor do I feel like she wasted my time. (Sometimes salon does that!) Salon also offers waxing, facials, nails...awesome! I took one star away only because the hours could be tricky ... as I slave away M-F 8-5, kinda hard for me to just say, hey, let me just drop by for a haircut. We talked and discussed my hair type (blakc long and straight Asian hair btw), length and the shape of the cut. The head massage was a plus. It was so good I would just go there for a hair wash. Koyote Kerzan have me the best haircut of my adult life a few weeks ago. This is the first review I've ever written on here and it's because I found out about Koyote on yelp and know that the reviews really matter. My hair was a seriously fried, over the borderline style madonna wanna be mess. I needed a make over in a major way and decided on a Dorothy Hamill/ Joanna Lumley style bowl cut. I made an appointment last minute at 5pm on a Friday and Koyote squeezed me in and stayed late for a 6:30 appt. I showed her the pictures and she gave me exactly what I wanted and was super enthusiastic about the process. I can't count how many compliments I get on this hair do and I can't believe how much I like it. Anyone who knows me knows I'm neurotic about my hair and am never happy with it. I've been following the stylist from this location Mary around for many years (I've had many different hairstyles during that time). She does an excellent job with men's cuts and styling. I love going to Koi Pod; I followed my stylist Layla Sullivan when she moved to this salon from Propaganda. I can't say enough great things about Layla, she is an amazing stylist, always willing to listen to my ideas about my hair and tell me what's a good idea and what isn't a good look for me. The staff and other stylists at the salon are great, very friendly. No sales pressure here. I also visit Amanda Koennecke at Koi Pod for eyebrow waxes - she's awesome - quick & relatively painless. She also did my wedding makeup and made me look my absolute best without going overboard, since I don't wear a lot of makeup on a regular basis. I am incredibly neurotic about my hair. I get an idea and become obsessed until it is actualized to perfection. KOYOTE ZERZAN DELIVERS! Her creativity comes fully loaded with amazing precision cutting skills and a deep understanding of color theory that allows any hair dream to become reality. Not to mention her totally genuine personality plus sense of humor make the time in her chair fly by. My most recent experience included her being very cognizant to my desire to grow my hair out (this week at least) and have a low maintenance style that looks sharp. Somehow I ended up with a very fresh new bob while barely losing any length! And this COLOR! A subtle silver ombre that she created just for me ! I love Koipod! When I stopped in to make an appointment, the receptionist was helpful and even asked what kind of cut I wanted and my price range so I could be matched with an appropriate stylist. Mary cut my hair, and not only was the cut great, but so was my time in her chair. I hate hate HATE awkward and forced conversation with a stylist, but with Mary, it actually felt like we just had stuff to talk about it. She listened to the cut I wanted, and a couple months later, the grow-out on my short cut still looks styled. Mary also does free bang trims and she was able to get me in the day I walked in to schedule one. Worth the money salon! My husband and I always get a hair cut from Noriko, and she is the BEST!! It is hard to find anyone in the states who can make japanese hairstyles, and she can provide us with the hairstyle we want ALWAYS! She always understands what we are trying to describe, and we always exchange our newest japan news. I'm always allowed to sit next to Noriko and my husband, and just join in the conversation. BUT the one thing that is great about this place, is that no one seems to have that awkward "must have a conversation" conversation. It's pretty nice, since it is a pain to have to sit outside alone and wait. Everybody that works here is great, always nice and flexible to sudden schedule changes. read more

I had the worst haircut here that I have ever had. While my stylist was very friendly and energetic, the cut and style were horrendous. I have short hair and needed a trim for a feminine, piecey look. I brought pictures; I described what I wanted in detail. She hacked off my hair and I was left with an ugly botch-job that neither fit my face nor any part of the description I gave her. She styled my hair by plastering my bangs to my forehead. Who knows, maybe it was miscommunication. Perhaps when I said I wanted to trim my existing cut, she heard, "Please cut off all my hair, make me look like a boy and slather tons of product on what's left.: I have been growing it out for months so that there's actually something to cut at another salon. Mary is absolutely fantastic! I walked into Koipod a real mess--overdyed blonde at the ends, 6 months of roots at the top and not much confidence at all. I walked out feeling like a new woman, with really GREAT hair. Beautifully tailored coloring, a gorgeous (but still manageable, for a girl like me) cut and healthy as can be! Bit of background: I have a lot of very fine hair that I'd been growing out over the past year or two. I have had too many bad haircuts/colors to count and I've struggled a lot with hairdressers not listening when I say "please don't razor my ends :/ " Mary was so patient with me! She looked through my extensive photo examples and actually listened to my concerns. She opened my eyes to some really great tips (hot water can cause your scalp to overproduce oil!! what!) and recommended products that would benefit me but were easy to use. My spouse & both regularly have our hair "done" by Jessica Tu, who is marvelous. She is a true professional. We love Emily the receptionist - and the fact that the salon does not assault you with loud music. The only quibbles we have are about the "furniture" - the chairs in the reception area are very hard and uncomfortable, and the shampoo bowls are not very comfortable either; the chair used for pedicures could use a comfort factor, too. Haircut was ok, not amazing, not bad. The thing is... I had a coupon says "25% off ANY Service". The receptionist told me that "It depends on the stylist. Your stylist doesn't take it." It did not say so on the coupon. But I'm not good at arguing so I came home and told my husband about that. He says it's against the law and I should've argued more. I thought about calling the salon to get my $15 back, but, well, I'm not going back to this place anyway. $60 haircut is a little too fancy for me (and it was just a ok haircut). The receptionist wasn't very helpful either (after she swiped my card and processed payment, I asked her how I could leave a tip. She swiped my card again to charge $10 more. Layla is da bomb! It usually takes me a year or so to find the right stylist upon moving to a new city, but I was told to go to Koipod and see Layla, so I did. And I am so glad I did. Layla is one of the few stylists who LISTENS to what you want done with your hair and then does it. She also suggests things when I'm brain-dead and don't know what to do with my hair and I really appreciate this. She is talented, but not egotistical and I always feel very comfortable in her chair. She also gives a nice scalp massage, which is a pleasant bonus. read more

Had my first cut and color with koyote. I love the cut, love the color and had a wonderful time during the service. I came in with a basic explanation for what I would like and came out with a wonderfully executed style that was even better then what I had imagined for myself. Also, as a queer women, hair cuts and other one on one services can at times be the uncomfortable , as I have to correct and explain aspects of my life. Not here.
