Zara was awesome, I went to Luminary for the first time and had to bring my baby to sit on my lap. She was very welcoming and easy going and did a great job cleaning up my hair quickly and exactly how I requested. I like to keep my hair long as possible and just get off the straggly ends. She did exactly that and revived some layers to help the natural curl come in. The salon is beautiful and clean. First, I want to speak to the location and aesthetic of the salon and then I will sing the praises of Allison Stewart. Location is super conveniently located on Division nearish 34th. There's a small parking lot, which I didn't realize until I walked up, but I didn't have trouble finding parking down a side street. The salon is gorgeous...a bit of industrial mixed with modern style softened by wood accents and plants. It's spacious yet cozy. They have tea/water/coffee options to your left when you walk in. Allison greeted me as I walked in and we got right to work since I was a few minutes late. I explained that I hadn't had a good haircut in over a year and that after 2 very disappointing haircuts I needed a new stylist. I found this salon here on Yelp and chose Allison because she seemed to have a comfortable and familiar vibe. (She's got great energy!) She listened intently as I explained what I didn't like about my previous cut and showed her problem areas. I explained what I was looking for in detail. I knew I wasn't going to walk out of the salon that day with my ideal style since my hair has to grow out of the previous baaaad cut. However, she did exactly what I asked her to do and got my as close to ideal as was possible with the state of my hair. It looks and feels SO much better and is cut in a way that will continue to look great as it grows out. For what it's worth, I'm biracial (half black half white) and it's hard to find someone that is comfortable working with the unique texture of my hair. Allison wasn't intimidated in the least bit. She gave me the best scalp massage during the wash, did an excellent blow out, touched it up with a flat iron and cut it dry as I mostly wear it straight. She even had product to recommend that would help protect my hair from the heat. She even took care to let me know it was really weightless protection. My hair doesn't do well with product weighing it down. (If you're reading this, Allison, I bought and LOVE it.) I walked out of there with my self esteem higher than it has been in a long time. It's bonkers how much a haircut can affect your mood. I'm so grateful to her for truly hearing my needs, respecting me as a human, and doing her best work to help pull me into a better headspace. I can't wait to continue to work with her in the future to achieve whatever future hair goals I might have. Thank you, sweet angel human. I appreciate you. read more

Never again! Got a haircut from Allison, based on her reviews and photos. It was probably one of the worst haircuts I've ever had. I showed her a photo of a haircut I have been getting for at least a decade. Nothing too fancy -- long, defined layers, soft V in the back and a side swept bang. I asked to keep my length. We talked through the cut for an extraordinarily worrisome amount of time. I asked if she wanted to see more photos but she declined and said she was VERY confident she knew what I wanted. She said she'd been cutting hair for over a decade. Pure hubris. She proceeded to lop 6 inches (!!!) off my hair, gave me short (only face-framing!) layers, very blunt ends and a pathetic looking "side swept bang" that was entirely too short, blunt and thin. It looked like a blind two year old with safety scissors had cut my hair. To add insult to injury, she rushed through the styling complaining about the amount of time we spent talking through the cut and left part of my hair unfinished. I reluctantly paid (with tip), and grimaced when she commented that perhaps she had "cut my bangs too short". Now I'm out $120 and have to wait a year for my hair to grow back to its original length so I can get the cut I actually wanted. I left the salon sad and dejected and months later still cringe every time I look in the mirror. Avoid at all costs. read more

I came to Luminary two years ago to get my hair done by Amber Rae. I was referred by a friend who has now been seeing her for four years of awesome cuts and color. Amber Rae is amazing - she always listens to what I want and helps me sort out the bad (very bad!) ideas from the good. The picture I posted is from just my most recent cut and color. If you look on Instagram you can see how incredibly talented she is with colors and cuts, from people who want more traditional color to those going for bright rainbows of hues. So wonderful! I had Kelli and she did such a lovely job. I had old grown out and cheap balayage that I had done over a year ago with absolutely no touch ups and it was looking a mess. She managed to perfectly match my natural color. I had made the appointment for all over color and she said I didn't need it and so we only did a demi color (which was cheaper!) because it would get me the results I wanted. She's super cool and nice but also didn't need to make constant conversation which I loved! The whole appointment went by super fast and she gave me the best blowout I've ever had. I have a ton of super thick and curly hair that she went through with ease and had me leave feeling gorgeous and ten pounds lighter. Really stylish and on trend cut as well. I really love coming to see Sasha. She might be an actual ray of sunshine in human form, and she does wonders with a lazy woman's hair. I try to make it in every 4 months, sometimes that stretches to 6. My highlights look natural from the start and then grow out so well, it's like I just had some extra blonde from summer sun. I have longish hair, and it get so much more volume and shape for months after a cut, even with super lax styling. In my mind, I just have good hair. In reality, Sasha makes it happen. The salon is lovely too. Thankfully, my regular stylist at Luminary, Tess, knew Kelli who does hair and make-up! A week before my wedding, I hired Kelli at Luminary to do my hair and make-up, and I am so glad I did! She listened to my concerns, put me at ease, and did an impeccable job making me look and feel beautiful. The only mark against using Luminary was that I had to pay full price twice--no special pricing for a run-through. The run-through was necessary in order for me to feel confident with the final result, and I don't regret it, but it *did* add to the cost of the day. read more

I have been seeing Amber Rae for 10 years now, and there's truly no one else I trust more than her with my hair. I have accepted that I am an extremely picky, and overly detailed person when it comes to my hair, which means that whoever touches it, has to be top notch. Prior to coming to Amber, I had tried for years to get my naturally brown hair to that perfect level of blonde highlight. This often ended up with brassy weird tones and never bright enough. Once I found Amber, she was able to take my hair to that level (and beyond), while keeping the integrity of it throughout. She's truly an artist when it comes to working with hair. This salon is beautiful (I love all the plants) and everyone is really nice but this review is for Kelli! I went way too long between cuts and color and a friend suggested Kelli. She was so great, she does a really good job of giving you a cut and color that suites your face. I've been so happy with both my visits. On my last visit, she somehow took my fried blonde hair with leftover semi-permanent blue and purple in it and transformed it to this amazing and literally shimmering honey blonde. I love it.
