Do not see Gioia. This was a horrible experience in so many ways. Gioia wasn't there at the scheduled time for my appointment, so I drive home. This took an hour. She texted me, apologizing, so I went back. Huge mistake. I told her how important it was to me to keep growing out my hair and that I only wanted the bare minimum cut to keep it as long as possible and she cut several inches. Why did she do this? It's so upsetting. I just can't understand how this happened. I only wanted to clean up the dead ends. To add insult to injury, the price on Vagaro said $65 and she charged for a hundred. It's hard for me to stand up for myself and I just paid it without saying anything. This was the most expensive haircut of my life for a really bad experience. I deeply regret ever setting foot in that business. I'm so, so upset about my hair. read more

She understood exactly what i wanted, and took my expectations above and beyond. She even used vegan dye, and a cruelty free lifestyle is important to me :) Heather was so sweet, sitting in her chair was fun and i walked away feeling more confident than i have in years. I saw Rachel. She gave me the cutest hair cut I've ever gotten! She also highlighted my hair rose gold and when I told her later that I really had wanted the color to be more vibrant, she super graciously redid it and only charged for the supplies. I appreciated her candor, her care, and her sincerity. She took the time to answer all my questions, explained things multiple times, and showed me relatively easy ways to make my naturally curly hair actually have formed curls and look cute. read more

I have a friend who got completely violated at this hair salon. She went to Suzy. She filled the stylist in on the products of her hair, which Suzy then proceeded to put bleach on her head with no strand test. This resulted in my friends hair getting fried to the point of no return, making her dye her beautiful blonde hair to a dark brown to cover up the damage this lady caused. My friend still has hair loss and damage due to the mess this stylist caused. This salon should be not be able to hire stylists, seeing that they don't know what requirements stylists should have. My friend now has psychological issues and has been depressed about the incident since, Suzy, decided it would be fun to play unqualified hairdresser. They then decided to MAKE her pay the full price for the hair appointment. Disgusting. I would sue if I were my friend. Her hair is ruined for 7-8 years. Her beautiful long hair is now shoulder length and muggy brown due to this woman's ignorance. Beware of this unprofessional nightmare of a salon. read more

Well, here goes nothing! Of the almost 300 reviews I've written on Yelp! this will be my first that isn't restaurant-related, and that's saying something! Heather was, simply put, amazing. Not only did she communicate well with me before I arrived in Portland (my husband and I took a trip out there for our anniversary in October), she also was very thoughtful about the pictures I'd sent her, and spent a lot of time before our appointment checking out similar cuts and colors to make sure she had a great idea of what I would like - and boy did she! Not only that, she spent over 4 hours with me, from the cut, to refining the style, to the myriad colors she put in my hair! It was fascinating to chat with her and learn about her life as well. I went back the next day to purchase the products she used because they really do make the colors pop out, and make my hair at least appear less dry. I would go back to hear in a heartbeat if I lived anywhere near Portland. Definitely recommend! read more

huge shout out to Evette for the best haircut! i had very long hair with no layers that just felt very flat and lifeless. i wanted a change but also wanted to stay in my comfort zone. i had no reference pictures and no vision for what i wanted, so i tried to explain what i wanted my hair to feel like & what i felt i was lacking. i wanted to keep as much as possible while adding movement and volume, with layers but not too many to where it's thin at the bottom, which can be difficult to compromise with, but she did just THAT! my hair feels so lively and and voluminous and NOT choppy whatsoever (which was my fear from previous experiences with getting layers). she continued to check in with me throughout the process making sure i was comfortable with the lengths which i really appreciated. also, her vibe and the salon's was super friendly and welcoming, so happy to have found Evette!! read more

Less than impressed. When I showed Caitlin three pictures of the Lana Del Rey-type of waves I wanted, explained that this hair style was for a photo shoot, and she claimed that she was excited because she "loves doing this type of hair", I thought I was in good hands. So I was a little surprised when I sat down and Caitlin asked me whether I wanted my hair shampooed or not. Um, you're the stylist, aren't you supposed to know what's best? While Caitlin curled my hair, she struggled to wrap the strand ends around the curling iron barrel, and many ends looked frazzled, out of place, or uncurled. Both sides of my hair looked completely different, and the top of one side stuck out weirdly. In summary, I looked like a poorly permed poodle. You'd think she would take a little pride in her work, particularly when she knows that this is for my modeling portfolio. But instead, I had to voice the fact that this was not what I wanted (nor what I think what anyone would want): The uncurled pieces, frazzled ends, and overall hair shape were obviously not flattering. She attempted to fix my hair for another half hour, and at one point, it actually looked acceptable. I voiced that, "Yay, okay, it's fine" but she completely ignored me and continued to curl and re-curl, straighten, and fry the front section of my hair. At one point, she even said, "It's okay, just be patient, this is an experiment." Wait, WHAT? The word "experiment" should never come out of a professional hair stylist's mouth while styling a customer. I finally said it was fine because I didn't want to be late for my photo shoot, but Caitlin could tell I was not happy. Here's the grand finale: At the front desk, Caitlin tells me I owe her $50. "The website says $45..." "Actually, it says $45 and up. Since I took extra time on your hair, it's extra." Seriously? It's bad enough that she was unable to execute the hairstyle I wanted, but she has the audacity to CHARGE me for the time she wasted trying to correct her mistakes. She backed down and said "$45 is okay if that's what the website says." Needless to say, I didn't tip Caitlin, but here's a tip from me to you: Go elsewhere for pretty hair and customer care. read more

I'm not a very loyal hair person. I like change. Especially with all things creative. I embrace it. I was having a horrible day/week/month/year/life/whatever, and Jenaya made it better in about an hour. I made an appointment the day prior, and just picked a random person from the list (coolest name contest!) for the first appointment available. Jenaya was my gal. My appointment started a bit late because her appointments were late before me. It couldn't be helped. Another person came to the reception desk to let me know it would be a few minutes, so I sat down and helped myself to their magazines. After reading an article about how Drew Barrymore started to learn how to cook when her first child was born, I was happy to hear someone call my name. Jenaya had the hair we only dream of. She introduced herself and asked me what I wanted to have done to my hair. I told her to trade me hair, and she said she would if it were possible (thanks, but no one wants this mane). But really, oddly enough, I wanted a haircut very similar to hers. She gave me some good feedback, didn't push products on me, and even talked about drugstore hair products. She did the right thing by cutting my curly hair while it was dry. This is especially important, since I was getting the bangs back. I feel like, more than anyone else, she really did refine my haircut. She took a step back from time to time to see the big picture, much like artists do when painting. I have been going to see Cate for almost 2 years now. She's the best and I love spending time in her chair. I always come in with a vague, not super helpful idea of what I want done with my hair. Cate takes the time to ask thoughtful questions and offers great recommendations to help really understand what I'm looking for, and she always nails what I want, even if I can't put it into words. Cate does a really great job with color- it's always beautifully done, and I always appreciate how she takes the time to make sure it is just right, and that I love it. She has great attention to detail and her knowledge always leaves me feeling confident in her abilities- I never have to worry about what's happening with my hair. Her cuts are always perfect- and I always leave feeling great and feeling like my hair is healthy and well cared for. My hair had been hacked out by random people who had no idea what they were doing (my step/mom, the guy at Supercuts, a hairdresser in Nepal) and has finally started to grow out. I have no problem paying for the quality service but it's best to communicate with your clients about what you're doing so we are not taken by surprise. I paid an extra $60 bucks without knowing until after everything was done. Probably won't come again because of that. Didn't leave me feeling great after the fact. Becky has been in charge of my hair for almost 10 years. I've followed this talent from her former salon to Fancy, I'd follow her anywhere to be honest. As a red head, she was the first stylist that was able to get me a natural blonde shade, we've also done bright orange, Auburn, and baliage highlights. Becky has this insane knack for highlights that somehow result in perfectly blended roots when you get to the grow out stage, cutting down on touch up visits to maintain the look. I have also completely fallen in love with the product line Davines she uses. I was always intimidated by the price of salon products but it's all I've used for years now, my hair has never been healthier and I find the products last far longer than anything less expensive so I'm probably saving money. I love when business owners try to cover their tracks and tell a fabricated story. Keep in mind when reading the owner's response, I know what color my daughter was asking for, it was not pink. She has been wanting the same color for a very long time, had been so excited to get it done, and was quite upset about what happened at this salon. I have also talked to several MORE stylists since then, and not a single one agrees with their technique. First of all, when dark hair is lightened to be colored red, it should not be bleached to white. The color will fade very fast. And somehow I've had my hair bleached to white several times, never taking more than one bleaching. Have I mentioned that my hair is darker than hers? Keep your back peddling to yourself. It was a sleezy practice and I would never suggest this salon to anyone who wants a stylist, especially one who knows how to do color. These girls obviously don't. read more

A couple weeks ago I received a Baliage by Jen. I am sad to say I DO NOT like it. I have called Jen to talk about this as well as left her the email below (It has now been almost three weeks and I have not heard back). I would not recommend her based on the simple fact that she did not listen to what I was asking for. I definitely feel like she had her own agenda when coloring my hair. This is a problemo as you can only imagine. Here's my email: Hi Jen, I wanted to touch base with you after having a Baliage done last week. I'm not feeling like I love it the way I really really wanted to. I know that you were having a rough day the day I came in because you had very little sleep so things were sleepy and off. I'm just feeling like the blonde that I asked for is not present at all. In fact, my hair is darker than it was when I walked in and although you mentioned it would lighten up, it has been 10 days and its still quite dark. Perhaps it's still too soon to tell? I feel like I paid $125 to have my hair made to look like nothing was done except a dark "teardrop" as you mentioned at the top, as if that were the goal. Was that the goal? This is actually not what I was wanting - in fact, it is almost exactly the opposite. I had hoped for (and asked for) my blonde blonde hair brightened up and the dreaded root line blended enough to look great as it grew out. I have to admit that I didn't feel like you listed to me. Figuratively and literally. I asked for a color I did not receive but I also mentioned to you twice that I would be going to go have photos taken afterward and talked about the website they were for for quite a few minutes. When you wrapped up my appointment (without polishing me up or fully drying my locks as I had asked for) you asked if I was going to do afterward? I wanted to see if I could go home and reevaluate the look and possibly embrace it. I wanted to not have feelings of bewilderment toward your disconnect with me stand in the way of how I felt about the color. So I have waited and I'm just still not liking it. Another thing that sort of rubbed me the wrong way was the extra $5 I was charged. Was that added because I paid with a debit card? I assume so, given that you are charged a fee if it is not cash. How do I know this? There are TWO signs posted telling me so. I simply wanted to give you honest and straightforward feedback that may help you to better your rapport with clients in the future. I don't believe I was being hard to read or understand. If I were, I'd think clarification would have been a good idea. I spent a lot for hair that I dislike is a total bummer for me. Overall I did not like my experience or the outcome. I do not say any if this in mean spirit, I honestly know how important it is for clients to leave happy and I know this could help. I think given the options I would have preferred a cancelation call with an honest message that you were simply out of sorts. read more

Jen colored my hair with her own agenda. Instead of the blonde I've always been (thanks to the haircolor industry), I came out a brunette. I would never pay $125+ to approximate my natural haircolor. In all honesty, I probably didn't have a very clear idea of where Jen was leading me when she introduced her idea of making my grow-out less noticeable (I never stated that this was my objective). It was also telling that when she was done, she declared she hated tell-tale roots. So mission accomplished -- her mission, not mine. I soon after conveyed my disappointment with the results, but she never contacted me -- that is until she saw my negative review at another site. Within 48 hours of my posting that review (and 4 months after emailing her), Jen got in touch. She wasn't apologizing or offering a remedy -- no, she was confrontational and basically called me liar, saying she had never received any communication from me. Worst of all, she called me at work, where I don't have the privacy or time to address the load of attitude she was giving me. After I forwarded her the email sent months prior, she then emailed me saying there's a problem with her getting emails at work, and I should have called her -- maybe I should have sent a carrier pigeon as well to be on the safe side? Just be on notice, this woman is unprofessional at best. read more

About 4 years ago I started growing my hair out with the idea that I will achieve mass gorgeousness like Liv Tyler from Lord of the Rings. I achieved the long lush length and all was awesome until one day I was having a dumb "omg my hair is boring let's do something crazy to it!" day and found myself sitting in a chair at a "punk rock" barber shop which I will not name (Miller High Life anyone?) getting a hipster mullet... This is where it all turned awful. I'm not blaming the gal that chopped my hair into hipster emo crap - it was my fault for running to the barber shop instead of booking an appointment at a trust-worthy salon, it was my bad that I said I didn't care what she did - I wanted volume.... but MAN! Come on. After a month of lugging my stupid "party mullet" all around town - acting like I was ok with it, I had enough and cried surrender. I had my fill of looking like trailer trash straight from the Piggly-Wiggly parking lot (not that there's anything wrong with that...). My friend suggested I visit The Fancy Salon. She'd been going there for a while and loved her stylist. The gal she referred me to wasn't in that day, but Sylvia was... I am SOOOO glad too. Sylvia rocked my world! In order to get the full mullet GONE she had to cut it down to a pretty short textured bob. I kept telling her - go shorter! No mullet!!! and so she changed the radio station to a dance-bootie-party station and went to work. Awesome things I can say about this place: * Super cute & chill little salon tucked away on Division * Open late - I called at 5 and got an appointment for 7, stayed till 9! Awesome things I can say about Sylvia: * amazing head massage while she was washing my hair * adorable gal with a giggle that slices my hair woes away * what a great attitude and sense of humor she has! * best haircut I've had in a really long time * although I was upset with chopping the rest of my hair off (stupid mullet) Sylvia made me feel gorgeous and brought excitement to the situation. I've been really avoiding writing this, because I'm afraid everyone will book up with Joel and leave me without him. But, it has to be done and since there is no Yelp for just Joel Arthur (I looked), I thought I'd write my review here. First off, I hate getting my hair done. I just do. I hate sitting there for so long, and I hate the awkward forced conversation, and I hate feeling like I'm wasting my time when I could be out frolicking in the sunshine. The awesome thing is, I don't feel like that way when I get my hair done by Joel. Time flies by, no awkward forced conversation, and at the end I feel freakin' awesome about myself. I can even still be lazy with my hair and not do it, because he makes it look that good. I can even let it grow out and my roots start showing and it looks awesome... because he's that good. Seriously. He's a mad scientist and a professional who just kills it. Now on to the Salon.. it's nice, clean, and fairly inviting. I don't give it 5 stars because of the reservation system really being a pain. It needs to be updated, because it drives me and others bonkers. Overall, I've recommended Fancy to friends, and I definitely recommend Joel (I'm sure others here are awesome as well). Keep up the bad assery. read more

I'm new to Portland and finding a new salon can be one of the most terrifying things ever. But I'm so happy to have found Fancy! Jenaya rocks. She gave me a great haircut and purple ombre. She gave me good advice and didn't rush through anything at all. She's really friendly and funny and listens to what you want. She's really attentive to your needs and makes you feel as comfortable as possible. Her prices are very, very reasonable and she takes great pride in her work. The Jist: My stylist, Jess Knight is talented and deserves 5/5 stars. The salon's vibe is catty and mean, deserving 1/5 stars. I was unsure of whether or not to get a keratin hair treatment. I left a message for Jess Knight asking if she would discuss the process. She got back to me a day later through texting (convenient) and even took the time to talk on the phone, answering my questions and help me figure out if it was right for me. The next week, Jess did the treatment and gave me a great haircut. She really listened to what I needed from a haircut (quick, wash and wear, low maintenance hair) and delivered. She added body and lift to my roots and lightly layered the ends to give my hair bounce from all angles. The keratin has been wonderful, my frizz is gone. If I could stop the review here, Jess and Fancy Salon would get 5/5 stars. The only negative thing about my experience was the vibe in the salon (I wish I could separately rate Jess 5/5 and the salon 1/5). Although Jess was easy to talk to and very nice, some of the other stylists in the room were VERY rude. The other stylists made side-long glances at each other to convey exasperation with their clients. When their clients couldn't see, they rolled their eyes at what their clients were saying to them. They even talked trash about their clients after they left. The behavior was ridiculously unprofessional. It basically left me feeling grossed out, uncomfortable, and like I was watching the real life version of the movie Mean Girls. Boo! read more
