This weekend my wife and I needed hair cuts and our normal barber wasn't available. We reached out to Summer and the Gilded Opal and she got us right in. This is the first time we had been there and had her cut our hair! The salon is cute, little old school but homie. Parking does suck so please get there early that was the only bad part. I went first and while my hair cut isn't hard it is a mens cut and often I find that barbers do a better job. However Summer knocked it out of the part. She was careful with details and understanding what I wanted. Overall it was one of the better cuts I have had. After mine cut she did my wife who has very very long hair but also an undercut. We came in for the undercut but she did end up getting 4" cut off to ensure that the hair remained healthy. It was a good suggestion. I was frantically marching down 21st looking to get a haircut to chop off my COVID quarantine locks (think Justin Beiber circa 2009). Luckily I saw an open shop and swooped in (after calling in for an appointment due the county rules). Matt Clune was gracious enough to squeeze me in. Matt did a wonderful job on my haircut. He is extremely nice person. I generally have an irrational disdain for sitting and getting my haircut, but Matt made the process enjoyable. I think I'm kind of like Eva's groupie. I have followed her from the time I met her at another local salon since 2012. If she moves, I have to move with her. She's just that talented. Moreover, she is really sweet and a great conversationalist. Since I have been her client for so long, I've really seen her talents turn into artistry. She keeps up on all the current trends and even did some training in Paris, France. Personally, she has taken me from having box dyed black hair to blonde, not once, but twice. I have solemnly promised to never dye my hair dark again. She's the most amazing colorist you will ever encounter. My hair is still long, middle of my back, and undamaged. I have super long, super thick hair, and I'm generally pretty difficult to please when it comes to a cut (i promise im only 3/4 diva). After a number of disappointments at other salons, and a dozen bottles of biotin, i found Amie. She's the only stylist ive found in the city that i trust, knowing that she wont get carried away and turn my 2 inch trim into a 2 year regrowing commitment. She's also been in the industry for a number of years and she's got expert-level understanding of texture, waves, and thickness, making sure that everything lays the way that it should. She's also such a nice person, and fun to gossip with (which is a part of the fun, amiright?) Finally, i go in for a trim pretty infrequently, because i always want my hair to be longer. Amie actually remembered my specific layering preferences almost a year after my last cut! What?!?! Also the other stylists at gilded opal seem really nice, and the whole vibe of the place is fun and relaxing. I had not had a hair cut in over two years, with the exception of begging my boyfriend to trim my gnarly split ends ... which really was turning into a long-term disaster. My hair had gotten quite long, had no shape, and was a sea of split ends. I had spent years curling the ends every, single day to make it look half way decent for work. Fried! TL;DR I've been changing my hair routinely for about 15 years. Eva is the first stylist to not only keep my hair seriously healthy, but also looking really freaking cool looking ALL THE TIME. The details: I've been getting my hair done by Eva for about 6 months. She's SO AMAZING!!! Easily the best part of my 2016. She does more than color your hair, she literally paints it with dye. She was (and still is) an artist before she got into hair design, so she's aware of color theory and that lends itself really well to frequent color changes without constantly having to bleach. I get several compliments a day, and even though I go longer than some for re-dyes, it fades out super well and people think it's intentional a month or more later. Eva is super flexible, keeps up to date with new techniques, and is always down to try something new! If she doesn't feel like you'll be a good fit together, she has several people she can connect you with to best suit your needs. While she specializes in short haircuts, she's guiding me through growing my hair out (again) and every length is something to look forward to. No awkward stages here! As someone who's tried to grow their hair out time and again, but has always gotten bored, I'm finally confident I've found someone who will keep me looking how I want to look! Lastly, the Ward Stroud studio itself has a great atmosphere, is super relaxed, and everyone I've met there has been really down to earth and excited for each other. I was recommended a few times to try out GO's services, and chatted with a few of the stylists until deciding Amie was the best fit for the dark to light transition we are now doing with my hair. She's been able to healthily transform my hair and I'm super happy with her engagement. I have social anxiety, and Amie's the best about staying engaged, but making me feel like I can still chill during my appointment and actually relax, and have my hair appointments be exciting and comfortable rather than a little anxious, which I've felt with other studios. Their pricing is right in line with other hair salons, and they're flexible and communicative during appointments, as well as quickly responding when I had a question outside of my appointments. For some reason, finding a hairstylist seems to be the most difficult task of all time. I've spent YEARS flipping through hair dressers ever few months. This one is too expensive and that one hasn't done a very good job in the past and the other has a weird vibe to it that I don't like. There always seems to be something, right? Not here. I had an existential crisis recently and determined that I needed to let go of 6 inches of dead hair IMMEDIATELY. I called all over Portland (after narrowing down options on Yelp - I was desperate enough to call a few 3-stars!) and no one could take me for over a week, and even then it would cost at least $80 for a haircut. What is up with that? I am all about fair pricing, but come on. I was lucky to call this salon because Natalie called me back promptly and agreed to fit me in her schedule that day! The salon was a tiny little hole in the wall on 21st that I never would've looked twice at, but easily my best salon experience in Portland to date. There's no fancy decor, no skinny women offering tea, just people getting their hair cuts without having to pay for all of the extravagances. Natalie did a perfect job with my hair, and that is no easy feat! She explained my own hair type to me, which had never been done before, and discussed her technique and how it would achieve what I wanted. She was hilarious and I had a really fun time hanging out with her! I was in and out quickly, but she perfected the 'do. I am so pleased with my experience here and can't wait to go back! read more

Hmmmmm.... This is difficult to write. I LOVED Tricia's energy & I hear she's incredible with curly hair, but, I have to say... I'm so terribly disappointed with the haircut I received. The problem is really my bangs. I was SO CLEAR that did not want them texturized. I HATE that look. I prefer clean, straight lines, especially when I can't help but to see it every flipping time I look in the mirror. She was such a delight to chat with & have a beer with. I completely trusted her with the scissors. And now I'm stuck bobby pinning my bangs, just like when they were too long. She also took about 2 inches off the ends and gave a little layers. Men, this place is for you too! I've been getting my hair cut with Emily at Ward Stroud for about six months now, and I never leave unsatisfied. She's fun, easy to work with, and does a great job with my thick mop. I generally can call and get an appointment with her the same day, but be warned she is getting busier. Amie does a great job too, though, so hard to go wrong with this place. Emily always offers me a water or PBR to sip while she's cutting, and she gives great head massages. As a guy who spent most of his 20s getting $18 cuts at Sport Clips, it was gonna take something special to make me pay more for my hair. This place sealed the deal, but still doesn't break the bank at $30 for a cut and shampoo. Strongly recommended. read more

Eva started cutting my hair two years ago, when I moved here. Men's curly hair is challenging. Many stylists leave you with a puffy dome. A cranial shrubbery. Some warped cross between a 70s microphone head and a chia pet. Not Eva. Her deft skills with the scissors leave me looking good _every_ time. I've been sitting on this review for two weeks, but I can't stay quiet any longer. I received the worst haircut of my 41 year life from Eva. I went in with a long undercut pixie that was overly textured at the ends and a challenge to style. After a lengthy discussion with Eva (who started my appointment 30 minutes late), during which I provided several photos of MYSELF with the haircut I wanted to work towards, she began. And TWO HOURS later, I exited with hardly any hair left. Her method was "interior cutting", meant to remove some weight. The result: visible patches of hair that is between a half inch to an inch long, along my front hair line and in my part. And the rest is uneven and still overly textured. The neckline is uneven. She said that I could style it in a pompadour; that does not even remotely resemble the photos I showed her of my goal. Nor is it true. If I push it back off my face, there are hundreds of hairs that are significantly shorter than the rest, and therefore do not cooperate with the other longer hairs. It is a nightmare that may ultimately result in cutting it all off the length of the short hairs and starting over. Very disappointed. I do not recommend. read more
