I wanted to wait a full month before I gave my review because I think the sign of a great haircut is NOT how amazing it is when you leave (DUH), but how amazing it is every day after you leave (WOW). I consulted many friends and colleagues who all gave me their salon faves and why, but I loved what my one friend said about A-List 'they listen, they take their time, and they do it right.' WOW! I met with Dosia on 12/20/2023 and surrendered my ultra-long, ultra-shapeless hair that badly needed...something? I wanted low maintenance but to keep the length. Give me a great style, but show me how to do it myself without a million products. She was absolutely amazing! Not only did she give me expert tips on styling my new look, but hair care tips (sleep on a silk pillow to protect your tresses, ladies!), and product recommendations without the pressure to purchase anything. Oh, and even my new pup was welcomed like an A-List Celebrity! Finally, it was so refreshing to find a salon and a stylist who wasn't dismissive because I wasn't laying down the Benjamins for dramatic cuts/colors/products (like so many stylists), - she really saw me as a beautiful person who needed expert care without the BS. I really wanted to love this place. Andrea - the owner - is awesome at hair. That's why I gave 5 stars the first time. But the second time - after she did my hair equally as awesome - I went to pay and Andrea rang me up for a cut and highlights at $165. The first time it was $125. "What changed?" I asked her. "Well," she said, "I put more highlights in this time." So, 3 things: 1) Am I supposed to keep track of how many highlights are being put in? Or know how much each one costs? 2) If you decide to put more in, even if it's based on a conversation that we had about what kind of color I want, shouldn't you tell me it's going to cost more? 3) She compromised at $145 but recommended that if I didn't want to pay $165 next time that I go with a less experienced stylist, rather than the owner. So I purchased a Groupon to have partial high-light and cut by Edward King. I feared long wait time as the coupon deal tend to book appointments month to two ahead, but I had no trouble scheduling one this month. I've had numerous less than desirable outcome (waist length hair chopped to shoulder w/o permission, hair color appt. lasting five hours with no visible result, perm with no curls, etc) with salon's, and I was wary of even going to a salon. I also have condition called trichotillomania so I can be pretty bashful explaining my situation. Edward greeted me with warm reassuring smile and listened intently as I explained my past and what I had been hoping to attain, as well as my trich condition. From start to finish he made me feel beautiful and at ease. He chose a reserved mahogany for my highlight which came out just right, and gave the definition I've been wanting without going overboard with red color. He even styled my hair so my curls cascaded down naturally and cut just enough to layer hair on my face without it being annoying or in the way. I literally have nothing to complain about - that's a first! He was very professional and personal at a same time, and I haven't met anyone with such presence even in the last couple of salon's I've visited. He was also very knowledgeable of all products he used, as well as ones being sold at the salon. He was very patient answering so many of my questions as well. Dosia gets me. I'm extremely low maintenance with my hair...like I don't know where my one hairbrush is. Most hairstylists I meet are horrified and try to get me into a regime of product and blow drying or suggest haircuts that require upkeep and regular visits. I'm just like not that person. And Dosia gets me. A friend who is picky with her hair recommended A-list to me. And from the moment I sat down with Dosia, it was like no judgement. We talked through my routine and she gave me a few options. We ultimately went with a long bob that was a new look for me, and it looked really good. My coworker asked me for my hairstylist the next day (which has never happened before!). Dosia really easy to talk to and helpful, she didn't push any agenda and gave me a haircut was really easy to maintain. And now that I've gone another year without a haircut, I can say it lasted and worked as it grew out. Most recently, Dosia worked with me on my wedding hair. We did a trial run for what was going to be an indoor 120 person wedding. But once COVID happened and the plans changed to a tiny outdoor wedding, she totally rolled with it and put together a beautiful half updo that made me feel beautiful. Love working with Dosia. Brandie is a God-send. Whether I'm feeling more adventurous and want to go try something new OR enhance things with color, Brandie always has the inspiration and artistic style to make it happen. Most recently, I had a hair emergency where my hair was (impulsively) cut by a different, local person (that I will never, ever go back to), and at the last minute, Brandie worked me in to her schedule, listened to my concerns without judgement, cut my hair without having to go too much shorter, styled everything gorgeously, and educated me on how to keep up with this cut. I am disappointed with the lack of professionalism in my communication with Edward King. I bought the Groupon, like many others, for his service. Scheduled the apt 3+ weeks in advance for the evening of Dec 23rd. Called him and the salon myself earlier that afternoon to confirm, and then received a text message from Eddie at 3 pm saying his travel plans overlapped with our scheduled time... Two hours before the scheduled apt. I understand we're all busy during this time of year, but as you can imagine, I was hoping to get my hair done for the holidays; a mere 2 hour notice doesn't suffice for the time and money lost in taking the afternoon off in anticipation of making it to the appointment. The lack of follow-through oh his end left me feeling completely dismissed as a potential customer. I never did receive a call back from him, all that was communicated to me was through text messages. I would expect that the stylist would reciprocate the salon's "24 hour cancellation policy" it requires from its customers, not a 2 hour notice before the holiday rush. read more

I wasn't asking for much - I'm off work early each day, and am now on winter break, so I was willing to be very flexible, just needed the partial highlight and a trim...not even a full cut. I recently visited A-List salon and had my hair cut and colored by Chelsie Killian. I have been looking for a new stylist for awhile now--my past hair dresser moved to Arizona! I feel confident that this is my new salon and that Chelsie is my new hair soul mate. She did a great job with my short hair and took my input well. She gave me nice layers and three tones of color, including shades of reds and strawberry blondes. Not only was the style perfect for me but I have gotten many compliments since. Chelsie has a unique sense of humor which had me in stitches. I really appreciated her tell-it-like-it-is attitude, which is something I appreciate in a stylist. The space is upscale industrial chic with an exposed brick wall and hardwood floor. It is a warm inviting space that you could hang out in all day. They also sell jewelry and nail polish, which is a bonus! I'm so glad I found this place! read more

A couple of hours after my appointment with Todd H., my husband gave me a side glance in the car and said, "I thought you got your hair done or something." I just laughed. For my husband to notice the difference between prior hair appointments and this one means that my hair must have been pretty different. Ha! It was. I have curly hair and there are certain things you don't do with hair like mine and those rules were kind of broken, like brushing out the hair before you diffuse it, just one of many red flags during my appointment. I have to interrupt this review by saying that I am a gentle yelper and it pains me to write a 3 star review but I also feel the need to spread the word on mediocre experiences. For $115, the price of a single color process, I feel the need to tell you to see someone else for such a thing at A-List, especially if you have curly hair. My stylist took another color client while my hair color was setting. I have never seen a stylist do this before! This is a terrible thing to do for time management. It set him up for being rushed. He had to wash and dry my hair by the time her color was set and that is an impossible task. The first time I went to A-List, I saw Kelsey. She did a great job with the color and my blow-out. My stylist here was sweet. The salon is welcoming and the price was great. Unfortunately, I got one of the worst haircuts ever here. I wasn't aware just how bad it was until I was home later and noticed it was cut unevenly (I mean, lop-sided). The worst part was, she spent way too much time trying to do something edgy and cool to my fringe -- 50% of my haircut was spent in a spot that was the size of an eyeball while the rest of my hair was neglected. In her defense, I didn't really provide feedback that I wasn't digging it. I was trying to keep an open mind and see how it turned out. Luckily for me, I have curly hair so it's pretty forgiving and easy to fix or hide a bad cut. I would absolutely not write off the salon for this one cut, though, as I think it seemed like a good business. I simply would rather go to a different stylist. I wanted to wait before I left a review for this wonderful salon. It's been my 5th visit and I have thee most perfect color and length for my wedding day. Like all good things in life you must be patient. You can't go from 0 to 100 in an instant and not damage your hair in the process. I'm 100 percent certain this is my place since hello, my hair is on point with color, texture, and cut (not to toot my own horn but I receive many compliments on my hair). My hair stylist is Carrie, and she is the greatest! She does a fantastic job every time. She truly listens to what you are looking for and my hair always turns out amazing! I consider myself a high maintenance hair personality and have high standards. Carrie has an understand for hair and it really shows! She is so personable, extremely friendly and I am able to talk to her with ease. Even for your first experience, it will feel like you've known her for years. I've been going to her for close to two years, and I will follow her where ever she may go! I highly recommend Carrie! The salon itself is beautiful, well maintained, and inviting. I love the mix of industrial and aesthetic beauty in the salon. It's in a great location in The Pearl and I rarely have issues with parking. Granted if you go on the weekend on a sunny day, plan to give yourself a little extra time. It's worth it! I will definitely recommend this salon (and Carrie!) to anyone! I haven't cut my hair more than just a trim in more than seven years -- and I finally had had enough of the flat, frizzy mess it was becoming. Brandie had the honor of hacking off a solid amount of length (I don't even know how much but it went from about 3/4 of the way down my back to shoulder length, so you do the math). I brought in pictures of a slightly-longer-than-shoulder-length style with some serious ombre and settled in for a marathon hair appointment. Brandie was awesome -- checked, double-checked, triple-checked everything and was super friendly and easy to talk to. Which, thank God, because I was there for like four hours. The color is PERFECT. Seriously. I get compliments daily and will literally never let anyone else color my hair as long as I'm in Portland. Cutting my hair as much as I did left me somewhat in shock (they have beer though, so that eased the pain), so when I left poor Brandie probably thought I hated it. BUT I've given it about a week and this morning realized I love it -- length and all. It's so much healthier, smoother and shinier and I couldn't be happier. Thanks Brandie! This has been the best hair experience by far! Dosia, listened to what I wanted and she delivered. Before my hair appointment my hair was a really warm blond looked more yellow than I ever wanted, but I thought it was normal because that is how my blond hair would always look no matter what stylist I would go to. But not this time. She explained to me the difference between balayage, ombre, and flamboyage. Which finally made sense. We did a balayage on my hair, toned it down and now I cant stop checking my hair out because it's as close to perfect as it will ever get. It looks fantastic. After the hair appointment I was walking to my car and this girl stopped to ask me where I get my hair done. Ooh I love it. I went in twice to see Dosia to do a dramatic color change. She really listened to me in what I want in terms of what look I wanted to achieve at the end of the visit. She listened and transformed my faded at home box dye job into a beautiful dark red-purple ombre. That exceeded my expectations in how rich and beautiful my hair looked after the visit. I like how she really listens to your input and gives you realistic expectations of how it'll actually looks in terms of the color/type of hair you have. She can be really creative if you let her or she'll do what you requested if you have a specific style in mind already. She does a wonderful job in hair design and catering to the customers needs. A plus is she is wonderful to chat with and always optimistic make is a fun and relaxing experience. She is very knowledgeable in hair care and won't push product at you. I have had a fair share of disasters when coloring my hair because it's curly and very thick and will pull color like crazy so I usually end up with black hair when I wanted brown because stylists don't anticipate this. I'm so pleased with the service and haircut I received at A-List. The salon itself is bright, airy, clean and modern. It was a lovely place to spend a few hours and the location couldn't be better right above Barista. Kelsey was able to squeeze me in at the last minute on a Saturday and she absolutely nailed it with my hair. I wasn't the easiest client, as I had long, very very thick hair and wanted it all cut off on the fly. Kelsey cut around 8 inches and I love what she did having just met me and my throwing this hefty job at her. The problem: Well, I normally dye my hair on my own but earlier this year I made one color mistake you cannot undo - henna. It made my hair a gorgeous red color and didn't fade at all, which was awesome. But I am capricious and decided that I didn't want to be a redhead anymore. Unfortunately, henna is very permanent and I couldn't get it out or even color over it. It had grown out about 4-5 inches and looked terrible no matter what I did. I also have pretty long hair and wanted to keep the length, so cutting it off was not an option either. That was when I decided I needed to see a pro, so I came here on a Yelp special and booked an appointment to see Kristina. The salon: Located in a cute loft in the Pearl district, prices are very reasonable for professional hair services and the salon makes special offers to both new and returning clients. The floor plan is spacious and has a very open feel. I enjoyed the satellite radio and selection of complementary beverages, as well. Online booking is very convenient and easy, and the stylists have varying schedules so it's easy to find a morning / night / weekend appointment when other salons seemed to have more limited schedules. The site even works from my Android phone. The solution: Kristina's fix for the grown out henna and over-processed hair was to work in highlights, which would break up the growth line. It came out fabulous with minimal damage. What's more is that I was able to come back and have the color adjusted a couple of days later for free AND Kristina styled it again. The cut was great, too. If I had continued dying it myself I am certain it would have melted, so I am extremely happy I made the call. I was in dire need of a haircut after the disaster that was my last "trim" last May. I scoured Yelp in hopes of being introduced to someone great. I've never had my hair cut in Portland, normally I wait until I'm home in San Jose. However, I was annoyed with the shape of my hair as it had grown out and wanted to do a big color change. I purchased a Groupon for A List with Edward King that included a haircut, full highlights, conditioning, and styling. I called on a Monday and was able to snag an appointment for Thursday that same week. Unfortunately, it was a rough day. I'd had a difficult morning, almost hit a pedestrian downtown, and struggled to find parking. I had some trouble finding the salon as well, but with help located it. You go into the door to the right of the Yoga shop and up to the third floor. I raced inside right at as my appointment time began and was greeted by Eddie himself. Eddie was warm and friendly and the salon was neat and beautifully decorated. Eddie listened to me describe my vague and confusing vision patiently and made sure we were on the same page. The entire experience was fantastic! Though it was the end of the day, he didn't rush and made sure I was aware of what he was doing. I've never colored my hair before, so this helped assuage my fears greatly. If that wasn't enough, it was really fascinating to watch him cut and style. His technique is fun to watch and left me with a beautiful blowout. Honestly, my hair has never looked better. Eddie fixed my layers so they lay perfectly and my highlights are subtle, but add a lot of much needed dimension. I was concerned that coloring my hair would deplete it of moisture, but my hair is healthy and soft. The entire process took about 2 hours total. After reading all the reviews, I was hoping that I would finally find a salon in the Portland area with good talent and listening skills. Dosia was a very nice person to talk to and her color application was great. She did this amazing scalp massage and was very pleasant to be around. However I did not get the color that I asked. We had our little discussion and I know she knows I left unhappy depositing $205 for a color that I didn't want. I even scheduled a consultation appointment to show the color I wanted ( honey color) as the picture. I already had that color as a balayage but I wanted it now more prominent on my hair as a sombre ( subtle ombré). The color is achievable without bleach because it's been done before in FL by using a level 8 at the least with a 40. She insisted that she couldn't do so without using bleach and that I should wait several days to see how I feel. When I went to the consultation she made me feel that she could achieve that exact color. I came in and wasn't delivered what was promised. Also my haircut is wrong there are longer pieces on one side that doesn't equal the other. I already know how , I feel sad, upset, and lost $205 to go back in time 4 years of working on gradually lightening my hair. read more

So much money for nothing! It is with a heavy heart I update my last review. I thought I'd found my go to hair dresser but my recent experiences with Chelsea Killian have been incredibly disappointing. The last time I saw her she encouraged me to write a review and liking her work I did so immediately after however within a week the color had almost completely gone leaving my hair looking as it had before and my wallet $200 lighter. I wouldn't mind if this was a cheap home job but the only reason I'd splashed out was because I was told the color would last my winter break. When I messaged her hoping to have the situation rectified she ignored my messages until she just sent a short, confusing and kind of aggressive message stating "*warned". I hate conflict and so I always try and approach things from a polite and readonable stand point but Chelsea was torally unprofessional. So disappointed! read more

I have been guilty of flying to Las Vegas to get my hair done by Michael Boychuck who does Paris Hilton and Pam Anderson among other famous blondes. In Denver I would go to Fergies stylist who frequently travels to LA, Mikael Padilla. So when I travel to Portland (often) I wanted the same caliber of stylist. I went to Andrea the owner and low and behold I found it! She was cool and easy to talk to like we've been girls for years and I would love to come back to A-list again when I'm there in August because she was fantastic. Dosia! She's A-mazing! I could picture her as a celebrity stylist. She's confident, knowledgeable and super talented. Before: frizzy and over-dyed with grown out roots. After: gorgeous golden bouncing hair that I stare at in windows as I pass. The color is divine and the cut is fantastic. She also found me the only product that has really smoothed my hair out well. Before I found this stylist I was nearly always disappointed with my hair and now I couldn't be happier. Dosia is also fun to be around. On the last occasion I was there her photographs were hanging all over the walls. She made me a cappuccino and told me a funny story and then I had a little time to relax and read. It was all very pleasant. I've been back to see Dosia several times and my only regret is that I don't book ahead with enough regularity. I feel SO much happier after she's worked her magic. Lorraine is FANTASTIC!!! She is a master with curly hair and color. As a travel nurse, I move around frequently and Lorraine is by far the best hair cut and highlights I've ever had. She took the time to consult with me in the beginning and I let her work her magic with the highlight colors. She also had awesome tips to style curly hair, and the cut is fabulous. Bradley: I am so lucky that I found him. Bradley has been doing my hair (cut/color) for the last year, and I am always SO happy with his work. (He is a perfectionist, and it shows!) He always takes the time to make sure he understands what haircut/color I want, and continues to check in throughout the appointment to make sure we are on the same page. We've done a couple different haircuts and colors at this point, and I have loved every one. Bradley always makes sure that my cut and/or color will be a match to my lifestyle and appearance (face shape, skin coloring, etc.), and gives fantastic advice to help guide/perfect any new ideas I bring in. On my last appointment, when I decided to take a chance and went more red than previous, he even checked in with me the next day after my appointment to make sure I was happy with the color. What a sweetheart. Beyond being a true hair artist, he is interesting, fun, and kind so appointments are lovely in every possible sense. Love this guy. read more

Andrea (owner / hair guru) is a genius. She does a gret job with my hair cuts, has excellent products (no animal cruelty), and is constantly learning about leading practices and techniques. Andrea also did my hair for my wedding this past July and gave me the vintage look I wanted, it turned out great. Visiting her on the day of my wedding was so calming--I was a basket of stress, and I felt much better and very excited when I left her salon. The atmosphere of the salon is fun/chic--they just moved to a bigger space in the Gadsby building. I also had a facial from the new aesthetician Andrea Fisk who has been doing facials for a very long time. She was great, and the fun thing is that she mentioned to me while waxing my eyebrows that she has also done Jennifer Aniston's brows...ha ha! read more
