Fig & Ash Wood Fire Kitchen - Short rib and pork belly meatloaf

    North Side

Fig & Ash Wood Fire Kitchen is a local restaurant and bar that is in the North Side neighborhood…read moreand is open for dinner and private events. It serves wood-fired cuisine that uses locally raised meats, house-made pasta, and seasonal vegetables. Currently, during the winter, examples of menu items are small plates (e.g., roasted beet salad and heirloom carrots), mid courses (e.g., linguine and blue-bay mussels), large plates (e.g., sesame soy-glazed eggplant, pork chop, and picanha), desserts (e.g., pistachio cake and Kahlua fudge brownie), and alcoholic beverages (e.g., cocktails, mocktails, wines, and beers). For my husband and me, I made a reservation for dinner through the Resy website. I chose from options of the dining room, a four-season patio with awnings and heaters, and a chef's counter with a view of the kitchen. Please note that although the foods are upscale, the dress code seems to be smart casual. We parked our vehicle in a lot a short walk away. Upon our arrival to the restaurant, a seating hostess promptly greeted and seated us. Our server provided courteous and attentive service, such as taking our order and bringing our foods on time, refilling our waters, and cleaning my crumbs. We started with a Crab Cake with decent amount of crab meat, mushroom duxelles, tasty truffle aioli, and a side of arugula salad. My main course was Branzino with sides of beans-vegetables and parmesan cornbread. My husband's main course was Duck Breast with a blood-orange demi-glace, asparagus, and potatoes. I thought that everything tasted very good. The total price was $96 plus tax, 3% credit-card surcharge, and tip.

We had a private event for 10 people at Fig and Ash on Friday. There's a small private event room…read moreif you go all the way to the back of the restaurant and downstairs. There is also a bathroom down there. Their default event menu is family style for basically everything so we only had to pick our desserts. They changed our plates and silverware between courses. The food was pretty good! I really enjoyed the salad, carrots, bucatini, and miso. I thought the meatloaf and steak were decent. The desserts were pretty good. My only small critique is that it was awkward splitting some of the mains family style due to there being an awkward amount of some items. For example, there was 10 people but eight pieces of miso so it was a little tricky to split.

couldn't miss "Pittsburgh's most famous sandwich" while in town…read more They have a bunch of locations so it's pretty easily accessible. We walked about 10 min and change from our hotel to the strip district location. It is a small little place made up for by its attention grabbing wall art of famous and loved Pittsburgh figures. The menu is easy enough. Pick a protein (there are many options) to go on the sandwich which is the standard cole slaw, cheese, tomato, and fries tucked between two slices of thick, soft white bread. As a vegetarian, I was pleased to see a vegetarian option with both a cheese and an egg and cheese version. GF and I shared and it is not a bad sandwich to share bc the thing is massive. That isn't to say that I couldn't have eaten another half bc I absolutely could have. The thing is so large and busting with ingredients I wondered how I could fit it for a bite but where there's a will, there's a way. It was excellent. What a great combo of flavors and textures. I only wish there was more cheese. I do feel like with the cheese version there should be more than what is in the version with meat but call me crazy. I could eat that every day.

Medium loudness, mainly from people's conversations. Went to bar area, little to right of entering and ordered. Asked for their special and the asked for the type of meat. Didn't know so they suggested I try pastrami and the capicola. Ordered and waited maybe 10-15min and they gave us our order in a big paper bag. It was heavy! Opened up one of the sandwiches to share and nicely the sandwich was cut in half already. Just need to tear the paper wrapper to separate. As you may know, sandwich has Cole slaw and fries on it, so it's thick. Preferred the capicola over the pastrami. Decent amount of meat on the sandwich but waaaayyy more fries than anything. The close slaw adds some crunch and tartness to a pretty mild sandwich. Overall, food was underwhelming. I'd stop by again but for some kielbasa or something ethnic. Otherwise I'd probably just try another nearby place to eat.

I have been dealing with that location for over ten years. I have had numerous orders for business…read morecards for all my employees in all four of my office locations -- Pittsburgh and three other cities, and a couple years ago I started using them to print monitor calendar strips which I have given to my clients for the past 15 years. I used to order the monitor calendar strips online but switched to this Minuteman Press about four years ago because they were printing my business cards and I wanted to keep my business local. The monitor calendar strip order is the focal point of this complaint. I understand that ownership of that franchise recently changed hands several months ago. This is the first I have dealt with the new owner(s). In early December 2015 I emailed them to place another order for monitor calendar strips, just as I had done in previous years. The only thing I provide them is the quantity, my company logo and phone number to be printed in the center portion of the calendar strip. Each of my company locations has its own info for that center portion. I eventually received the pdf proofs for my approval. The center section with my company info for all four offices were all perfect. I ordered 2,050 of them, the same as I ordered last year. Last week a client called and advised me that the days for the month of March are kinda screwed up. I'd love to post the actual proof for everyone to see. The days (the numerals) are totally messed up numerous places for the month of March. It is missing (skipped) several days in two places, and even several days are duplicated- not once by four times. It was so jumbled up, it was kinda funny. I immediately emailed Lisa (I think she's the/a new owner of that franchise) to ask her about it. She emailed me back two days later saying she'd give me a discount on a re-print. I then called her to get clarification because I actually expected her to simply apologize and reprint them at no charge. She admitted that she missed the error but then said that since I okayed the proofs that I am equally responsible. I was stunned with that response. She insisted on the fact that I okayed the proofs, so it's not all her fault. I responded: Yes, I okayed the printed center portion with my company info on the calendars, but I certainly did not proof the actual calendar days. The format and layout of the months, including color and size, is 100% identical in every respect to the previous years I ordered this item. It's basically a template. I said: You mean I was expected to proofread an actual calendar -- every single day of every single week of every single month? You want me to make sure all the days of each month are properly numbered? She insisted that, yes, that was my responsibility. I said: Who EVER proofs a calendar day by day to make sure all the days are there and in the correct order? I proofed and okayed my company info to make sure it's accurate, and I am certainly responsible for that. I even offered to come to her location and she can ask the first ten people who came through her door if THEY would proofread the days of every month of a calendar as part of a proofing process, and that if she got even one person to agree with her that I'd agree to pay double. She wouldn't take that offer, said that's her policy, and wouldn't budge on a complimentary re-print. Her opinion and policy simply defies logic that I am responsible to proofread an entire calendar - day by day. If I make a mistake in MY business, I own up to it - even if it means a loss. I value my clients, their future business and, more importantly, my reputation. If I ever told my clients "well, that's our policy," I would expect to lose that client - and for good reason. Well, she just lost my future business. This review may or may not reach the franchisee, and I frankly don't care. I was so taken aback by her position that I felt obligated to let people know what and who they're dealing with and if they stand behind their product and don't care about losing a long-time customer. I have retained all my email correspondence, which quite easily and clearly substantiates my entire dealings with them. And I have no problem discussing them with anyone who contacts me because facts, especially written ones, are incontrovertible. Good luck!

The tacos had this really nice smoked flavor with just a bit of a kick to them, and adding hot sauce took them to another level. Christie (@cmnst4 ), the owner, was genuinely so kind when we talked about coming in-warm, easy to chat with, and proud of what they've built. That energy carries through because the staff was extremely friendly and honestly couldn't wait to make up my order. I love that it's an open kitchen. You can see them pressing tortillas, building everything fresh, and actually talk to them while they're making your food. It feels interactive and intentional instead of rushed. We tried a handful of things, but I have to specifically mention the chicken tacos on a corn shell and the quesadilla because they were exactly what I wanted-flavorful, fresh, and done right. Not over-the-top, not trying too hard. Just solid food made by people who care. And that's the kind of spot I'll go back to.

For those who don't know him, he plays dumb with everyone. Called in and complained, then called back 20 minutes later and literally said that he hadn't heard from them in weeks. This guy is a waste of air. His buddy Dave isn't any different either. For context, a relative of mine could no longer afford to rent the items she had from here, requested to return them and informed Steve himself that they (rent a center) were no longer authorized to take any more payments. Well Steve did what Steve does best, he ignored the request to pick up the item, played dumb when called out on it, and illegally charged for the item after being told he wasn't allowed to. Went in person to schedule pickup and was told by Dave that only Steve has the ability to process a refund, which clearly Steve doesn't do refunds. He has just ruined this place with his awful attitude that Steve doesn't see. Hopefully now Steve can get his store back to how it was, and his "old time customers" will enjoy being a customer again.
