As the address might indicate, Shearwater Coffee Roasters lies in a small industrial complex that…read morehouses small and medium-sized businesses. This location is where the Shearwater beans are actually roasted (in 20lb batches, which counts as "really small" in the coffee industry). When I came by, I received a friendly and enthusiastic greeting from the personnel on site, who expressed no annoyance at being diverted from their normal wholesale activities. Shearwater has good beans, and those beans are roasted with care. I came in for some ground coffee that I could use while visiting Central Connecticut and walked away with a full pound of roasted coffee in the bean, 12oz of ground coffee, and a cold brew coffee to drink on my way back. The cold brew was delicious, and I liked the ground coffee (Honduras, I think) as well. The unground coffee made its way down to Philadelphia, where it's giving great pleasure to its recipients. Although Shearwater has espresso machines and some pour-over equipment on site, only the cold brew was available to retail customers like me. That was fair enough, but still somehow disappointing. If you're around Trumbull and are looking for some excellent coffee to take home, head directly to Shearwater without passing Go. Check their hours before you do, though; note for example that they close at 2PM on Fridays.

That being said, they always have at least one coffee brewing. On this early weekday afternoon, I got a 12 ounce of the Running Rapids (usually their cold brew) for $3.19. As other Yelpers have mentioned, there's no milk or sugar, leading to a pure and complex coffee experience. After letting it cool a bit, it was very deep and flavorful. It was nice to see a bit of the operation since the space is open. There are a few shelves with coffee accessories and a few stools for perching.

The coffee here is excellent, especially the drip coffee, and the prices are great. we ordered Drip Coffee -- 5/5 Iced Matcha Latte -- about 4/5 with vanilla and almond milk Tres Leches Sweet Glaze Donut -- 2/5 The matcha latte was good, though slightly sweet with the vanilla. The donut was just okay this time. but last time we had the blueberry donut, which was really good. no bathroom, very limited seating ( two tables), but plenty of parking and a really nice, relaxing vibe. Overall, still one of my favorite coffee places.

This is the spot where you can get a nice cuppa coffee and window shop. Man, I can window shop with the best of them! Walking inside I see I have the place to myself. I look to the left wall and see the various coffee bags. Once I'm at the register, I order a cappuccino. While waiting for my drink, a young dad walks in with his two sons. The sons run up to the counter and they scream, blackouts! ? The woman behind the counter takes out the most delicious looking doughnuts. She grabs two doughnut for the kids and wraps them up. Man those doughnuts look incredible! I was tempted to buy one but instead I chill. I walk over to the various coffee beans on display and buy a bag of espresso beans. I have a Moke pot at home, its time for me to dust it off and make some espresso. I make espresso pretty good, my grandparents had it down to a science. Georgio's Coffee Roaster, it was a pleasure to visit your store. Welcome to Stony Brook!

They are some sort of subtenant of the owl market. While this allows them to focus exclusively on coffee, it does create a bit of a disjointed feeling between the food service and the coffee service. However, given that the owl's food is very good, it does not necessarily detract from the overall experience. The roast: it's a bit of an esoteric roast, leaning into the sour cherry type profile. While it would probably do well at an esoteric espresso competition, I personally find it to be a challenge when paired with milk. This is a problem since my primary focus is on milk-based espresso drinks. I wish they would offer a somewhat more traditional roast. My primary descriptor for their espresso is "sour". Finally, while they do have a skilled barista on staff, he is only there part-time. It is imperative, in my opinion, that a coffee shop with this type of positioning ALWAYS have a skilled barista on staff.

When I received my first order, I was bowled over by the packaging alone. The bags fit into the cardboard mailing pouch so snugly, and the metal clasps that close the bags are the finest I have ever encountered. Care. Clearly great barrels of care go into this concern. And the flavors offered are numerous and rich and satisfying. The back stories of the individual types of beans available (with names such as "Ponticello," "The Falls," "Mexico Oaxaca," "La Ventolera," and "Nano Chall" -- all of which I have cherished for their tastes) make for fascinating reading and history, all of which is discoverably on the company's website, quartetonecoffee.com. And on ever bag is an original work of art that the owners screen print by hand. Go to the website. See and explore. And take the chance of finding what I did: a source of coffee that I will not ever let go of. And join in the singing of the praises for this one-of-a-kind company. Don Berman
