The restaurant is at the basement level and easy to miss. It is a no fuss establishment and perfect if you want a home like feel dining experience. It reminds me of a slow Sunday afternoon and your family just finished mass and now it's time to eat. I ordered the stuffed cabbage, which for the price point, you cannot beat. The cabbage was stuffed with meat and all the fixings. The gravy on top is one of a kind delicious. I also ordered borscht soup, which could have been a bit hotter, but my preference is scalding hot soup. I'm sure if I had asked to heat it up, they would. I also tried their meat filled pierogis and yes, it had a generous portion of meat within each dumpling, outstanding. The coffee was nothing special but a tasty cup of brew. The coffee paired perfectly with their homemade honey bread. The dessert is so worth it. The flavors are rich with honey and not sweet at all. Back in NYC and back to my favorite Ukrainian "restaurant". A little hard to find if you don't know what you're looking for, head downstairs and enter through the first door on your left. This is basically a community kitchen for St. George where I can get all the food my babcia used to make. Delicious pyrohy / vareneky and tasty holubtsi. The pliatsky and kovbasa were also yummy! Cutest Ukrainian restaurant tucked away that has the BEST potato pirogies. The entrance is easy to miss but once you follow the stairs down you will find this spot. The pirogies are hands down the best in the neighborhood, although I do wish they made more flavors. The employees are all friendly and helpful. They are a very simple restaurant operating out of the basement of a church and only have a handful of menu items, but they do them so well that you will not miss having more options. We ordered 12 pierogies, 2 cabbage rolls, and 2 cups of borscht for lunch and found it to be the perfect amount of food to split between two people. Everything was great, but the cabbage roll was especially tasty to me. On top of the taste being great, you won't find a better deal either. Happy Ukrainian Independence Day. I had to come here today, and thankfully a friend cared to join me. This isn't my usual order, but it was a great midday meal. Borscht and a sweet. Out of all of the Ukrainian restaurants in the East village, this one is my favorite. Best tasting borscht. Simple and delicious vareniki. And the fried sausage is really good from what my meat-eating friends tell me. The menu is limited, but cheap and good. All of the people working are sweet too. Service was friendly, food was solid and filling. They had removed a lot in prior photos/tableaus showing support for Ukraine -- to my dismay. They had a new menu with stock photos and more items on it than in the menus in the prior photos posted online. The golumpki that I ordered had white sauce, photos had the red sauce in prior reviews. Streecha is THE PLACE if you're looking for authentic, as-good-as-your-babusia-used-to-make Ukrainian food (and not some Ukrainian/Polish/Russian fusion nonsense like some other places...). Their menu is small, simple, and super affordable - and everything is absolutely mouthwatering. They make their varenikiy by hand every week (volunteers are welcome every Saturday morning, btw!) and they're stuffed with potato. You can add some toppings, which vary depending on the week. Streecha was my favorite restaurant in NYC -- homey, delicious, and affordable. But when we went back last weekend the whole atmosphere had changed. Upon research, I found out the original chef was let go. The food was bland, no bread to accompany the borscht (which now comes in a paper cup instead of a soup bowl), and the onion topping on the pierogi no longer beautifully caramelized. A limited menu of pierogies, sausage, and stuffed cabbage being served out of the basement of a church is part of Streecha's charm. They recently reopened after closing for a bit at the start of the pandemic and are trying to be as careful as can be by taking orders ahead of time (via text. They don't mess around with food delivery apps like that) but they're still cash only. They actually have you place the cash in a basket on the table and they'll hand you back your change in the same manner so in effect this is still contactless payment, as in, you make no contact. People often say New York is one of the few places where you can dine out for less than it would cost to cook at home, and inexpensive places like Streecha make this possible. Prices have been updated a little during this time, but $5 for 6 pierogies or $9 for 12 pierogies is such a good deal. For a non meat eater like myself, this is the only vegetarian dish on the menu but the pierogies are plenty flavorful. The sour cream makes for a nice dipping sauce and the caramelized onions these dumplings are topped with add a touch of savory sweetness, adding some depth of flavor to what might otherwise be a bland dish. They also have rotating lunch specials that you can ask them about via text at (914) 413-9774 or you can check their Instagram @streecha . For just $8, you get a protein and two sides, and from what I've seen the dishes look really well made. Went there to celebrate Moskva ship sinking. The varenyky are PERFECT. Super soft, fluffy dough and great filling. I'm spoiled by my mom's borscht so I wasn't as excited about it, but it was still the perfect compliment to the potato varenyky (the dumplings/pierogies). Definitely planning on coming back and trying more. I love holubtsi and grew up on those too, so I plan on trying them next time. The space is barebones but that's ok. I kind of appreciated them turning on the Ukrainian news channel while I was there to "fill" out the room. You pay with cash. And there's a tip jar on the counter. Don't like it? Don't come here. Actually, please don't come because they close when they run out of food. Today, that was around 2pm. Streecha evokes fond memories of Ukrainian restaurants that are long gone. Places where babushkas made your varenyky by hand and guarded their secret recipes. I love the nostalgic images of Tara's Shevchenko, the embroidered cloth, all of that Ukrainian symbolism. And, today it is supplemented by blue and yellow flags imprinted with and important political messages. If you're Ukrainian, this place is like home. The food is authenticity in a paper plate. I would go eat a dozen varenyky with onions and sour cream ($10 cash only) as often as my waistline could handle it. The borscht was excellent, too. Holubsti and Keilbasa with kapusta were good. Handmade pierogies (made by the ladies of the church) which were amazing with the perfect amount of filling and caramelized onions. I have been spreading The Good Word about Streecha for YEARS and nobody believed me and I never wrote a Yelp review until now. And judging by the myriad of reviews and the growth in clientele that I've witnessed over the past few years, Streecha is now TRENDY. I cannot take credit for this, though. Streecha has emerged on the basis of its own merit. As you may know, Streecha is a Ukrainian church basement kitchen, a subgenre of restaurant which is sadly underrepresented in New York and, we might say, the United States at large. It is truly some volunteers in the basement who cook delicious food and sell it at even more delicious prices. The menu is small. But there comes a point in life when what you have is enough; when anything more is too much. Such is the case with Streecha's menu. The menu is enough. There are stuffed cabbages, varenyky, borshch, daily specials (often consisting of a meat or fish, grain or potato, and vegetable), and other items. Anyone who demands more is surely a glutton treading in dangerous waters. Do not expect much from the establishment--paper plates, plastic utensils, folding chairs. Ukrainian television blasting. But it is nice. There are decorations from the area, flowery tablecloths. Truly beautiful. Again, ask yourself how much you really need. And how much is too much. The prices are amazing. Expect to pay under $10 for a full meal. The daily specials are generally $7-$8. Stricha, as you may know, means "meeting" in Ukrainian. Streecha is indeed a meetingplace, a place to meet fine food, fine prices, and fine people. The establishment may look closed from the outside. But if the gate is open and if the door is open, it is indeed open: just go down the stairs, enter the building, and go in the door on your left across from the trash. I recently visited for the first time after they reopened from their summer hiatus. I have always looked forward to their offerings as the food was made very similarly to the way my mother prepared her dishes. This year, however, the food was very disappointing. The prices have gone up considerably and the size and quality have gone down. The stuffed cabbage was very small and had mushroom gravy on it not the tomato sauce as in the past. The pierogis were also very small and did not include any sour cream or onions. A bottle of water went from $1 to $2. It has also become so crowded it is now very uncomfortable to dine in. I will miss the experience it once was, however, I think it is time to support another Ukrainian eating establishment. read more
