We had a great stop here and a lovely chat with Kristy, our welcoming waitress. Great service, decent prices, large portions, very clean (bathroom too!), good history. What more can one ask for when stopping on a road trip? We had an omelet with sausage, cheese, onions and peppers m, a biscuit and hash browns, a coffee with half and half (they have it of you ask for it, but they have coffeemate on the table), a Reuben sandwich with a cup of lemon couscous soup with nice herbs. We were pleasantly satisfied and would return! It was nice to see a revolving set of local images on the TV compared to the sports and news noise often encountered in dining spots lately. This was a perfect place to refresh ourselves on a long journey. If traveling, consider staying at their local lodge too. read more

4 1/2 out of 5. Been a few years since we ate breakfast here, but the memory of their wonderful biscuits and gravy still lingers. I am happy to report that the meal is still excellent... one of my all-time favorite B & G's. My wife's breakfast sandwich was also a solid offering. Their young servers also provide smiles bright enough to light up any morning. They stay busy without even the slightest sign of a cell phone. If you are anywhere near this place and are hungry, we strongly recommend a stop for a great breakfast in a clean and welcoming facility. read more

Definitely a hidden gem. Stopped in a couple times during our stay to one of my favorite little towns, Ovando, on the edge of the Bob Marshall wilderness, and a throw-back in time. A place where the schoolhouse has all of 12 kids, grades K-7, and time moves slowly and quietly w/ afternoons filled with fishing, reading and various projects. Met a few bike riders from Wisconsin the day before, who were passing through, and saw them at breakfast here the next morning; they said it was excellent. We wanted to get on the road, so just got a couple coffees and coffee cake to go, but it was all very good, w/ super friendly service. Can't wait to come back and enjoy some breakfast or lunch! read more

The Stray Bullet in Ovando, MT is, IMO, the best place to have breakfast or lunch within 100 miles from my home. The staff are friendly and Most helpful should you have questions about Fishing, hunting, hiking or camping in the area. They are big U of M fans of course but support any MT team over others in Big Sky Conference. I wish they served dinner but driving home after dark is a challenge with deer, elk and a few Sasquatch crossing hwy's 200 and 83. No reservations are required but you better bring a big appetite as the servings are large and delicious!!! My favorite breakfast is their homemade biscuits and sausage gravy with 2 eggs over easy and bottomless coffee cups. Colleen and Sherry are EXCELLENT hosts and just plain wonderful ladies!! read more

The Stray Bullet is one of those hidden gem, blue highways, road-trip destinations that would seem like a caricature, if it were not real. And if the breakfast and lunch fare were not so tasty, honest, and delicious: egg scrambles with sausage links and toast; roast beef on sourdough with sprouts, cucumber, lettuce, pepper jack, and horseradish; Reubens with local dark beer or endless cups of black coffee. The pistols in holsters on the walls and glass bottles and exposed wood and cowgirl touches are simply icing on the cake. The mountain views through the enormous windows and cottonwoods rustling along the banks of the legendary Blackfoot River, these aren't on the menu, but they are part of the extras that make Ovando, small, quaint, lived-in Ovando, more than just a small town with dozens of residents. They help to make it a place - a location where landscape and livelihoods exist in happy harmony, where $12 gets you a soup, sandwich, and cold pint, with lots of sunlight streaming in and green fields aplenty. You are close here to Seeley Lake, and to Missoula, and to the Bob Marshall Wilderness (Montour Creek Trailhead), and the Blackfoot River, but you aren't really near anything, exactly. Except for Ovando. And on a beautiful spring day in early May, with balsamroot flowers blossoming lush and yellow amidst ponderosa pine and sagebrush on the open fields that spread out across the valley, with spring green coating the limbs of larches and trillium springing up in the cool, wet shade of the canyons, you just know that Ovando is the center of your universe, and the Stray Bullet, with its gun-centric food choices (the Remington and Ruger are particularly good) and no-nonsense lunch menu, is exactly where you need to be. Montana. The Blackfoot. The Bob. These are not just names. They are incantations. Magic begins when the snow on the mountains starts to melt, and the scent of summer tourism is in the air. At the Stray Bullet, you may meet the occasional tourist - or be one yourself - but chances are that you won't feel that way. And when the locals arrive on horseback or tractor and hitch up outside the cafe, you'll swear that you, too, are right at home here, in Ovando, where no one goes away hungry and all, after a pint or two, is surely to be forgiven. read more

Stopped here before a day of fishing on the Blackfoot with two friends. My wife was raised in the mountains in North Carolina and I know good biscuits and sausage gravy.......and the Stray Bullet Biscuits and Gravy is as good as it gets! We had a really bad experience here. The food was expensive for the quantity and quality of it. The worst part of our experience was the staff. You would expect being in a small town that the service would be good. However, they were rude and acted as if we were interrupting them even though we were the only customers there. When we confronted the owner about the way we were treated she didn't seem apologetic at all. We also tipped well over 20% and still was treated like outsiders. The locals were treated very nicely by the staff but for some reason we were treated like garbage. I am extremely upset with the way we were treated when all we were was nice and friendly to them. I hope they read this and learn a lesson about how to treat people who are different from them. Just to give you an idea about how we were treated: nobody said hi when we walked in or even smiled, the cook rolled her eyes (not knowing I was looking) when my boyfriend asked if he could order food to go (after we had just tipped 40% on our previous order), every-time we walked in everyone was silent and avoiding eye contact with us (even though we were the only people in the cafe), they also made a condescending comment about how we ordered take out but sat outside on a picnic table but the reason we didn't leave was because they decided to give us a coffee cup that was not to go (she should have gave us a to-go cup and my boyfriend and I would have happily left). I am extremely disappointed with this place and people should really call them out for their rude behavior. I know no one wants to here the racist card but I am a 100 percent sure it was because my boyfriend is brown. Every one who walked in who was white was treated so nicely. Two bikers came in and I couldn't believe how nicely they were treated compared to us. We did nothing wrong to be treated like that for no reason. read more

Great service and delicious sandwich. The menu may get you started on a sandwich idea but you end up creating your own little piece of heaven. If you get the strawberry rhubarb cake ask for it to be heated. Delish! read more
