For years I saw their sign touting their "famous chicken salad" and scoffed. Then I actually tried it. If it isn't famous, it should be, AMAZINGLY good, yet very simple. A bit pricey at around $15/pound, but truly delicious. They also have a great meat department and some gourmet snack crackers, pastas and other items that aren't readily available elsewhere. Wall to wall gourmet options, this place is a chefs store. Nestled at the corner in central west end it offers all the elevated needs as well as pantry basics. I should shop here more often! People are so friendly and helpful from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave. Honestly, it was an experience like no other grocery story experience. I parked in their private lot off of Kingshighway and made my way inside. As soon as I walked in, an employee greeted me and asked if there was anything I needed help with. I was honestly just there for their chicken salad so I let him know I was good. I did see a few bouquets of flowers at the front of the store that I just had to have, so I grabbed a few of those too. I made my way through the store and to the deli area where I snagged a container of their chicken salad and and I opted for a few croissants too. It's the best way to enjoy this dish. I also made my way to the freezer section to purchase a pint of Jenni's ice cream (birthday cake flavor)! It was such an easy trip since my list was super small and I didn't need too much. I walked through some of the aisles to see if anything else grabbed my attention, but I was honesty just so excited to get home to eat a croissant sandwich, that I didn't spend too much time browsing. The cashier who helped me was friendly and told me that I purchased some of the best items in the store! That was validating to me. Then I paid and before I could walk out, another employee came over to help me with my bags and with the flowers. It was such a nice experience from start to finish. I have always enjoyed Straub's, I come here quite often for specialty items. Since I work in the area, I frequent this location a lot. I grab late lunches here and have become a fan of their chicken salad and egg salad sandwiches on croissants. They are definitely quite scrumptious. My newest finds are McConnell's Premium Ice-cream made in San Francisco and this Carrot Cake that is served by the slice at $5.99 a piece. They are absolutely my new favorite items. This Straub's I can honestly say has a wide variety of items which I love!!!! It's soo tempting and I always get caught up in spending waaaaayyyy to much. They have an amazing assortment of bakery items, wine, produce and frozen foods. The in-house items they make are always stocked, whereas I find at other locations when they're gone, they're gone. Yesssss, Straub's is definitely a high-end grocer so in turn of course you will spend more but it's definitely worth it. Also, the employees at this location are very helpful and courteous. I'm always asking about the carrot cake when I do not see any slices out and someone is always there to assist, even when I have questions about the frozen pizza's I've never seen in any other grocery markets. For money people, the smaller grocery store may be a little pricey to do much of their daily shopping. However, for ready-made, deli, specialty bakery cheeses, and other items that can't be beat. You'll find the quality unmatched as well as the service if you need to put together a quick meal And don't wanna deal with going to a larger grocery store. This is the place to stop. They also have a decent wine selection and very fresh produce. The other thing I enjoy about shopping here is there are many local things carried that you don't find at the bigger stores an enjoyable experience, with a few tables outside if you want to pick up a sandwich for lunch to eat right away. read more

So thankful for Straub's which was literally across the street from the hotel that we were staying at. We were driving cross country and didn't stop for dinner and it was pretty late. We were able to find something for everyone at Straub's to eat and then take away snacks for the next part of our roadtrip. I enjoyed a hot cup of soup and the hub and kids were able to put together meat and cheese plate with crackers. For the road, we grabbed some pretzels and donkey tortilla crackers (wish I had gotten more than one bag actually!). We couldn't be happier with the selection and ready to eat items! My first visit to this establishment. I was very impressed by the variety of items available at this city grocer! I stopped by because I heard they had sushi and I couldn't resist picking up some gourmet popcorn. I had a minor snafu at the register because the cashier struggled with counting my change out correctly and needed to call a manager to re-open the register and help him count the money. There are so many delicious treats in the cases and stacked on the tables to try. Last time I was in, I got a piece of rum cake. Moist and sweet! I love browsing the aisle that has a surprisingly large number of jarred marinara sauces made right here in St. Louis. The local Bissinger's chocolates and gummy bears are a favorite of mine. It's fun to browse the soda bottles that sit individually on the shelves, in addition to a huge case of cold drinks. Overpriced, upscale, small, neighborhood grocer. But if you don't mind spending or penny pitching you'll adore Straub's. I'm a penny pincher and I still love it (from a distance). Although you can fid most of the groceries cheaper in other stores nearby, Straub's carries a lot of food items from local businesses (totally supporting the home team). The staff here is awesome! Personable and actually take the time to get to know customers. I'm always greeted with a smile and thanked prior to leaving. The girls in the bakery know I'm tempted by their samples so they remind me when I'm dieting lol..(.my diet takes a village) Sushi John gladly takes my order over the phone and creates my special rolls. The veggies are fresh, the meat is premium, the dairy is dairy. They have every cheese you can pronounce. The house-made chicken noodle soup is splendid. and before we ever had our own Ben & Jerry's or Jeni's Ice Cream, Straub's carried both in-store year round. I have been a resident of the CWE for several years and Straubs has and will continue to be my favorite grocer in the area and arguably in St. Louis. While their prices are admittedly on the high-side, the convenience, to me, is worth the premium - and that I'm supporting a local business that has been family owned and operated for over a century! There is always parking available and every spot is close to the entrance. The store size and layout makes shopping quick and efficient (and much better than the Clayton location IMO). So easy to just run in a for a few things and run out. I can be in and out in less than 10 minutes. I feel like this is impossible in a large store like Schnucks or Deirbergs, even Whole Foods. The entire staff is very friendly and if there is ever a line at check out it is no more than a couple of people. There food selection is fantastic they offer name brands, local brands, and offer wonderful hot bar and pre-made options. There chicken salad sandwich is one thing they are known for and I can definitely vouch for that! However, don't sleep on those potato skins which are INCREDIBLE once reheated in an air fryer. Overall, you can't go wrong shopping at Straubs unless you are shopping on a budget. read more

With the three tips below, I can all but guarantee a fair value during your next shopping trip: 1: The store excels when it comes to personal service... If you have questions, are wanting to special order a particular item or are looking for something that's a little harder to find, there might be no better place to start shopping in the Central West End. 2: They are one of a few local retailers for many of their products... Straub's does stock a few national brands, but many of the best deals are on the harder-to-find options. There are some true exclusives, such as Miss Hulling's cakes, along with many high-quality, locally produced options (Park Avenue Coffee's bottled cold brew and Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate bars come to mind) that aren't sold widely around town. The selection in this smaller store is curated to the point where you'll be hard pressed to find anything less than "really quite good" among the local product gems. (Straub's also has a particularly interesting ice cream section, including good selections from Graeter's (Cincinnati) and McConnell's (Central Coast, CA)). 3: There's a reason that the prepared foods section takes up as much room as it does... The store has leaned into an extensive deli and prepared foods offering for years, becoming really, really good at it. Shopped carefully, the bakery, sides and hot foods selections can be competitively priced (not to mention delicious). By keeping an eye on their sales, focusing on key ingredients where higher quality matters and enjoying the less widely distributed (but no less excellent) finds, Straub's is a consistently useful option that can deliver good value! I also love their Thai pasta salad! It taste so good! Has water chestnuts and celery for the crunch! Something about this pasta salad makes me come back for more and I'm not a pasta person at all! Everything that is in the pasta is very flavorful. Looks so simple to mimic the recipe but I just rather purchase from straub's. The curry chicken salad is also great! Made just like the original but curry style! A little sweeter but still prefer the original. This little grocery store also sells a lot of small business goodies such as Ann & Allen's gooey butter cake. labonne bouchee goodies, sia's Italian ice and much more. Straub's is in a convenient place in CWE, but otherwise not my favorite grocery because it's very small and very expense. I will say their bakery and deli are super high quality. If you need fresh food for special occasions this is a good place to try. However, I could never afford to shop here regularly - much more expensive than the nearby Schnucks or Aldi. read more

I love this place is has prepared treats and foods for my kids in the back and I haven't ever been able try the meat because we're always at the hotel but the fresh meat counter looks amazing. When I lived in the CWE I was a regular at this Straub's, I loved the meat counter, deli, prepared foods and produce. Straub's is to specialty foods what Whole Foods is to organic and as pointed out by Cherie O. Straub's does that job very well. Now that I live in the Lindenwood Park neighborhood, I make a very worthwhile drive for special occasions. You will not find a meat counter like Straub's at any other major grocer in the St. Louis area. The butchers are knowledgeable and personable in their services. Many times I have needed special cuts of meat and they have gotten them in for me as a special order. If you like the prepared foods section at Whole Foods, stop by and check out Straub's. You'll be amazed how you can create an amazing lunch for yourself or a romantic dinner for two. Another section I have rediscovered recently is the frozen foods. They offer brands, that are not offered at the chain grocers. Yes, they are higher in price, but the quality is well worth the additional $. The staff is always friendly. Many of the butchers still remember me from living in the neighborhood and make it a point to say hello, even if they are not the one serving me. Which shows the high level of customer service that they provide. In closing, I want to give a shout out to their BBQ. Occasionally during the summer months they grill and BBQ in the parking lot. If you see that taking place, it is well worth stopping by and partaking. I have been known to call to discover the schedule so I know when to make the commute over to the CWE. read more

I always knew Straub's was awesome but it was only recently that I had a chance to poke in and browse around a bit. As we were gazing at the legendary meat and fish counter (PS people, you judge such things by whether they offer two types of scallops, veal, oysters, that kind of stuff. Straub's has it ALLLLLL), we stopped to test-taste some rieslings (the liquor, logically, is right across from the meat and fish). The gentleman took some time to tell us about the region and the fact that they use slate - yes, I said slate - to help as "fertilizer" in the wine. You aren't going to get any of those notes in the grape, but it was a really interesting fact. As he was talking, the bourbon man in me was checking out the shelves and my eye fell upon the bottle of "bourye" (blended bourbon and rye whiskey) from High West of Park City. That's when I knew I was in a classy place. Try finding that stuff in a local liquor store, much less a high-end grocery store with a drinking problem. Straubs is one of the most reliable local grocery stores that I know that I can rely on. If it wasn't I wouldn't have called it reliable in the first place. Straubs, like any grocery store carries food and meat cuts and pretty much everything else that you need in order to continue on living. But what appeals most to me about Straubs is the fact that it is within walking distance from where I live. That means that this summer with the gas prices going as high as they are, I won't have to donate plasma in order to pay for gas. No I can just hop onto my bicycle and just ride over there, or I could just walk. Straubs while not really huge or large or anything is a nice quaint little store. Everything is laid out together and grouped in appropriate places so you do not have any treasure hunts required of you in order to find a can of tuna. Of course, if you can't find what you are looking for you can always ask someone because they are more the willing to help. Straubs also has a great deli. There you can pick a nice little lunch or get the makings to make it yourself. Their food selection is nice. There are sandwiches, chicken tenders, and hot plates. Loved it! While staying at the Chase Park Plaza for work I was so glad to have this little shop nearby. A couple people mentioned it was expensive, but for the basics I picked up it really wasn't that bad. Maybe groceries in Madison are just more expensive than those in STL? I made two trips to Straub's during my stay. One on my first night about a half hour before closing to pick up some water to avoid paying $4 for a small bottle of mini bar water. I was able to pick up a couple of large bottles of water for $3 total, if memory serves. The checker was so friendly and outgoing and my coworkers and I enjoyed chatting with her while we rang up our purchases. My second stop was on the morning I was leaving. A big breakfast wasn't really sounding great - I mostly wanted to relax and work from bed for a bit until I had to check out. In true classy fashion I put on a hoodie and jeans over my pajamas and ran across the street. I snagged a super moist and delicious cinnamon chip muffin from their bakery department and a bottle of root beer from their large selection. Not the healthiest start to the day, but as someone who can't have caffeine it was exciting to have dozens of root beers to choose from since it's one of the few sodas I can drink. The checker seemed to know everyone in line ahead of me, but was efficient in moving the line along. While being rung up this time I noticed they offered hand-written checks for tabs - I figured that sort of thing had gone the way of the buffalo in the 60s or 70s but they offer it. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to stop there while in town, but I'd definitely go again if I was staying in the Central West End and definitely wouldn't hesitate to pick up another muffin. read more

This small market is very close to my home and I love and cook with quality products. I usually Instacart from a larger grocer bc I hate grocery shopping bc of my anxiety but need to get food. I sometimes stop here bc it's small and not as busy when I'm on the way home from working my cleaning company. I may pay more for produce or a can of beans but I don't mind bc it's very convenient energy and time wise. I usually get under 8 items. This time I stop in after an ice storm that shut the city down. I didn't want to deal with the hustle and bustle of the regular grocer and Instacart so I came here. The manager on duty in the red shirt came from the back and insisted on bagging my items with two hourly employees standing right there. Two cashiers. One checking me out and the other one for the other lane. They were surprised to see him which tickled me; then made me uncomfortable as a former store manager. Because wth? The cashier looked at me and made a weird face. It wasn't a smile. I was very underwhelmed with how my items were bagged. I don't know why he didn't choose to do something else more important when he had the manpower to bag my items standing right in front of him. It was an odd experience. read more
