Sunset on the deck with wifey

My wife and I made reservations for this restaurant about 2 or 3 hours beforehand. This was our first trip into Wheeling and we were staying overnight at a nearby hotel. We were really hungry so we couldn't wait to get here. We had our GPS but we had a little trouble finding this restaurant. We saw the sign for the restaurant but pulled into a housing plan. We were confused but our GPS said that the restaurant was supposed to be right where a townhouse was. We actually got out of our car to walk up the steps to this townhouse to really make sure that this wasn't the restaurant. No it wasn't the restaurant it was somebody townhouse! Like I said we were very hungry so our brains weren't really working! We eventually found it and it was a big and very nice looking restaurant. We parked and walked into the restaurant but there really wasn't anybody around. We didn't know where to go. Keep in mind it was evening so I'm assuming they just were slower later in the night. Finally somebody walked into the room we were in and asked if we had reservations. We said that we did so then he went to show us to our table. My wife mentioned about maybe sitting outside to the hostess. It was still nice out and we like to sit outside if we can. He said sure and he took us on what turned out to be a little tour of the restaurant. This was a big place I guess the main floor is where we would have sat at if we choose to sit inside. He brought us upstairs to a few very large rooms. Like banquet style type of rooms. There was nobody in these rooms and they were dark but they have a lot of space here. I can see a wedding reception or a big party going on here sometime. So we got to their patio doors and he shows us outside onto their deck. Another big area with a lot of tables, it was dark, and nobody was here. Perfect! They turned on some lights and then we got to pick where we wanted to sit. It was still a little light outside still and we got to see the sunset together at our table. It was turning out to be a weird but romantic experience! Like I said we were hungry so we were looking to order an appetizer fast. Our waitress was a nice younger girl. She had to come all the way upstairs to wait on us but she said she liked the exercise. For appetizer we ordered the Asparagus with thinly cut beef tenderloin. I think this was the best appetizer that I have ever eaten. I was really hungry but the beef was so tender and good. It went great with the asparagus that was cooked perfectly as well. So we crushed that appetizer and went on to the main meal. My wife ordered some fish and I ordered the Blackened Salmon with veggies and French fries. The salmon was really good. No complains on the food at all. Our appetizer and entrees were excellent! It started to get a little cold outside so we didn't want too hang here too much longer but we would have if it was warmer and we weren't so tired. Kuddos to our waitress who kept climbing those steps to wait on us and bring us our food. It was really cool that they let us sit outside by ourselves and it gave us some good time together. I would like to see what it is like here n the daytime and when they are busy. I would come here again because the staff was nice and the food was great!

My grandparents have been living in Oglebay for over 50 years. I absolutely adore Oglebay! I love…read morethe lodge and the new updates they've made, the glass house, the museum inside of the mansion, the beautiful views throughout the hills, it's truly an incredible place. I have been going to Oglebay since I was very little, and still continue to visit due to my grandparents living there... but I will say the kids Park absolutely needs renovated. There are so many trip hazards and the entire park is very old and has outdated play equipment. I highly suggest they take some of the funds that they receive for Oglebay and put it into making a new park for the kids. The paddle boats and all the new updated activities are great, but for kids to play at the park, safely, that should be the next focus. As you can see in my photos, every season is gorgeous, and the walking trails throughout are really nice for exercise. There's a restaurant now located on the grounds, I would say it's a little overpriced, but the food is good. I've stayed in the room several times over the years, and some of them are old and outdated, and some of them are really nice and new. I appreciate both. No matter what, they always keep the hotel portion clean. I would say the hot tub seems to have some issues here and there, that pool and hot tub have been there since before I can remember. There's new restaurants inside of the lodge as well, and they also have ravenous reviews. Christmas time is always beautiful, and the beautiful bloom of the flowers during spring is quite a sight to see. Apparently, the zoo will now have lions and beekeeper, I'm excited to take my baby to visit this spring! If you're thinking about visiting, do not hesitate you will enjoy it as much as my family I have for many decades.

If you have young children in town, Schenk Lake is a nice spot for a short boat ride or to try fishing! Originally a private country estate of 750 acres purchased in 1901 by Earl W. Oglebay, he donated the land to the City of Wheeling in 1928 to create a public park and education center. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) helped to build out the trails in the 1930s. Overall, it may be worth a stop here if you have young kids. However, I found the park to be kind of "meh" due to a lack of scenic views. At the end of the day, it's just a nice public park.

Fantastic I like…read moretotally flew by the seat of my pants when I planed the West Virginia portion of our trip. Wheeling seemed to be somewhere in the vicinity of our drive to Morgantown tomorrow so I decided to stay the night. Looking for a place for dinner, I stumbled upon this place on Yelp in wheeling. Little did I know what an iconic place this is. We arrived at 5:15 on a Wednesday evening bc we are getting old. A couple leaving at 5:15 made us see our future. We were fortunately seated immediately. The inside is SO CUTE. I can't get enough of it. It felt like such an authentic Italian experience. Our server was incredible. So nice, personable, helpful. We started with our beverage orders. I went with a little something off their cocktail menu the elderflower martini which, exactly as I expected, was way more like spiked juice than a "martini" but I wouldn't want it any other way. Don't think I wasn't intrigued by the fried cheese but we have been eating a fair amount of that lately so instead of offering an app, I opted for an entree (stuffed rigatoni) and a side of broccoli. GF ordered fettuccine with red clam sauce. She got a house salad and I didn't for some reason. The broccoli was seasoned wonderfully but the texture wasn't as crisp as I would have liked. The rigatoni and the house sauce was ORGASMIC. That sauce is incredible I would gladly buy it by the jar. The rigatoni were al dente pillows of creamy ricotta heaven. Spectacular. GF regarding her red clam sauce pasta, "delicious". We also ordered the tiramisu to go so stay tuned on that.

Our waitress was friendly and went above and beyond the whole time we were there. They give you bread and butter with your meal and it was really good. I ordered wedding soup and ate every last bite or sip of it. For my entree I went with the classic spaghetti and meatballs and it was delicious. The sauce was perfect and they sell jars of it that you can take home with you. I had a great experience here and will definitely be back.

The food is really good at this little restaurant. Elle & Jack's leans toward Italian cuisine, but it gets a little funky with it by offering things like chimichurri salmon, a burger and steak frites. The menu is small, though, which is a relief. A pared down menu is my favorite kind of menu. Give me a small list of the things you make well, and I'll be happy. We got the arancini as an appetizer, of course. My kids had never had arancini before, and they loved them. But it's hard not to love a fried ball of rice covered in red sauce! I got the steak Caesar, because I do love a good Caesar salad. At this point in my life, I'm pretty much obligated to order the Caesar if it's on a menu. The girl can't help it. The steak was cooked perfectly (medium well), and the only thing I would change would be to make the croutons smaller. We also got a side of charred Brussel sprouts with bacon and dates. These were good but needed to be a little more charred! In my opinion, Brussels sprouts taste best when they're scorched. A side order is huge and meant to be shared. It could have easily been shared with three or four people. Elle & Jack's does not have an official kids' menu printed on a paper, but they have an unofficial kids' menu, which apparently lives in each server's head and can only be shared verbally. It's like five or six items. From what I remember -- because our server's words floated away from me like dandelion seeds in the wind as soon as he spoke them -- kids can choose from pasta with red sauce, buttered noodles, a grilled cheese and a cheeseburger. One of my kids got pasta with red sauce, and it was a perfect portion size for a child. My child liked it but said that the noodles were too chewy (they were probably cooked al dente). My other kid got a grilled cheese, and he liked it just fine. The kids' grilled cheese comes with fries. The scene here is slightly upscale but casual. I saw people who were dressed up and people who were not dressed up. I think it's definitely a come-as-you-are joint, but a place to visit when you want something a little more elevated.
