My grandparents have been living in Oglebay for over 50 years. I absolutely adore Oglebay! I love the lodge and the new updates they've made, the glass house, the museum inside of the mansion, the beautiful views throughout the hills, it's truly an incredible place. I have been going to Oglebay since I was very little, and still continue to visit due to my grandparents living there... but I will say the kids Park absolutely needs renovated. There are so many trip hazards and the entire park is very old and has outdated play equipment. I highly suggest they take some of the funds that they receive for Oglebay and put it into making a new park for the kids. The paddle boats and all the new updated activities are great, but for kids to play at the park, safely, that should be the next focus. As you can see in my photos, every season is gorgeous, and the walking trails throughout are really nice for exercise. There's a restaurant now located on the grounds, I would say it's a little overpriced, but the food is good. I've stayed in the room several times over the years, and some of them are old and outdated, and some of them are really nice and new. I appreciate both. No matter what, they always keep the hotel portion clean. I would say the hot tub seems to have some issues here and there, that pool and hot tub have been there since before I can remember. There's new restaurants inside of the lodge as well, and they also have ravenous reviews. Christmas time is always beautiful, and the beautiful bloom of the flowers during spring is quite a sight to see. Apparently, the zoo will now have lions and beekeeper, I'm excited to take my baby to visit this spring! If you're thinking about visiting, do not hesitate you will enjoy it as much as my family I have for many decades. read more

I did not stay overnight at Oglebay Resort, but simply visited the park for an afternoon in mid-June 2025 and thought it was pleasant but nothing spectacular. If you have young children in town, Schenk Lake is a nice spot for a short boat ride or to try fishing! Originally a private country estate of 750 acres purchased in 1901 by Earl W. Oglebay, he donated the land to the City of Wheeling in 1928 to create a public park and education center. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) helped to build out the trails in the 1930s. Overall, it may be worth a stop here if you have young kids. However, I found the park to be kind of "meh" due to a lack of scenic views. At the end of the day, it's just a nice public park. read more

The good features of Oglebay Resort outweigh the one bad thing, which I'll get to later. This place truly is a resort, and the property is huge (about 2,000 acres). It has four golf courses, a putt-putt mini golf course, tennis courts, a ropes course, a pond with swan boats, a playground, a zoo, a botanical garden, a glass museum, several restaurants and coffee/ice cream shops ... all on this one resort. Oh, and I forgot to including the hiking trails, spa, indoor pool, arcade ... there's a lot going on at Oglebay. It's a great place to visit if you want to stay and play all in one place. During our stay, we visited the zoo on the property (called the Good Zoo), did the aerial challenge ropes course, played a round of golf on a par 3 course, visited the botanical garden (it's very small, but even a small botanical garden is a good botanical garden), and ate at the Skyline Kitchen & Bar. Separate reviews are coming for the zoo and the restaurant, so I'll save my thoughts for those reviews! But in general, everything we did and ate at Oglebay was great. The aerial ropes course was challenging and fun for my kids. It was so adventurous that I had to walk away at one point because my hands were getting too sweaty just looking at them from the ground! My children were completely safe, though (the people who do the ropes course were 100% safety-first and on it the entire time), but still! The golf course was fun because we had it entirely to ourselves! The only thing is that some of the course was muddy from recent rain, so we got a little sloshy in some spots. But it was a beautiful day when we played, and it was nice to hit some balls into holes under a clear, blue sky. Alright, so Oglebay is fun and family-friendly and a great place to stay. All of that. However, I have just one question for the people who designed the hotel rooms: Whyyyyyy? Why would you decide to add a barn door to the restroom in a double queen room? You know that more than one person will be staying in a double queen room. And in our case, four people were staying in that room, with one restroom with a barn-door door that did not lock, was not at all sound-proof, and in fact had a huge gap on either side of the door, so if you were in the sitting area, you could directly see whoever is in the restroom and what they're doing. And you could definitely hear them! This whole situation was a nightmare for three introverted people and one extroverted-introverted person to deal with. At one point, some of us just decided to use the public restroom downstairs. So, Oglebay, if you ever remodel your rooms, please remove the barn doors and put in normal doors that close completely and lock. read more

I visited Oglebay ("Oglebee") with my family this week. The children had a wonderful time. It was a perfect getaway for two quick days. Pros: -- Warm, cozy, family-centric experience with nightly hot chocolate (they call cordial), movies, and bingo. -- So many activities to choose from (horses, golf, skiing, mini golf, racquet club, spa, etc.) but probably not all in the same season. -- Friendly staff and special holiday decor. Cons: -- Resort rates for everything; dining options on site are all quite expensive. -- This place is not new, and is not a 5-star hotel. There will be mold in your bathroom and dust in floor corners. It's rustic, though it isn't intentional. -- The fake ice skating at the Carnival is an environmental disaster of shredded PVC plastic that'll wind up on your kids and in your clothes. -- The pool water looked murky and my daughter's white swimsuit is now yellow. I don't think they clean it often or well. I'm glad we went for the experience. The kids had a great time... but I might look elsewhere for our future trips! read more

I was considering giving this place a 1 but I'll give it a 2. I thought this would be a nice little getaway weekend trip. We get into our room lodge and first thing you see is lots of dead flies, lady bugs all over everything!! The toilet in our unit has a major toilet clogging issue. People flush baby wipes down the toilet very often. There is a glass tray that sits over top of the sink. The glass shelf is ready to fall off. It is not safe to put anything on it. The pool and hot tub were open but didn't have time to used it. The food places at the resort we have read a lot of reviews and noticed the price isn't worth going. Now the " Festival Of Lights" you are given a map that shows you to go to number 10. Starting point/ Santa Village....this place is traffic from hell. As we were stuck for over a hour. Bumper to bumper stop and go. We finally get to the ticket booth and the arm is down implying that we must pay to proceed. Once we paid, we were given a season pass, another map of the parks, and a reward book. For people that aren't from this state. I'm here to help you out. You DO NOT need to pay them nothing!! Some of the lights weren't working and the lights took 10min. I felt bad for all the cars giving $30 per car. It is not worth staying here or even seeing these lights. Take your money and your family somewhere else... take the drive to see the Caves lights in Kentucky or drive to Powell, OH to see Wild Lights at The Columbus Zoo. Those places are WAY much better to bring the holiday spirit for everyone. Now on a good side you go to the glass shop/ treat shop at night. The big tree is so nice to enjoy while playing music. On the bright side y'all need to go to Perkins restaurant. The food and staff took great care of us. Sara our waitress treated us so kind with great service. Their breakfast was so good! I highly recommend going there. ** Update We told the front desk worker about our stay. They were really apologetic and credit gave us a discounted rate for our stay. They saved us $200. The property at Oglebay Resort is absolutely breathtaking! There are plenty of activities for all ages as well as restaurants and a spa. It truly is a one stop shop. The room I stayed in was recently remodeled but there are other rooms that were quite dated. The staff was very friendly. The food was pretty good but not the best I've ever had. Yes something every motel 6 provides. After checking out we. (Group of 4 golfers in two rooms) get an unknown bill for $131 each. Called them to inquire about this unknown charge and they said they overcharged one guy in each room. Seriously you can't even bill evenly? The Jones and Palmer courses were nice but overbooked each day. Took over 5 hours to play 18 each day. Watched a lot of other per play golf those two days. Nice place with very scenic grounds but the true price msu end up being 15% or more higher than you e pet but to be....be sure to bring a cooler for water, colas or other drinks you want to keep cold. read more

Old resort with decent amenities but nothing special. I was here for a conference and stayed about a week. Rooms are dated and musty. Black mold in the corners of the bathroom and shower, which I heard is common and blamed on the humidity. Staff is mostly attentive, but not overly friendly. Great place for walks, zoo, golf, museums, swimming, etc. Grounds are well kept and pretty. Honestly, reminds me of an old country club filled with a lot of wealthy, old people. We booked a stay here for The North Pole weekend. It was like a giant Christmas-themed slumber party. There were so many activities that we didn't get to do as we arrived late on Friday night and we were tired. We stayed in the lodge. Our room was clean and very spacious. The carpet had seen better days. The beds were comfortable as well. The staff was so cheerful and accommodating. They took time to ask about our day and how we were enjoying our stay. We never felt rushed or invisible. There were characters, such as Santa, Candace Cane (an elf), the Grinch, and even Olaf! They were all a hoot! We are at the Skyline buffet for breakfast, and let me tell you that the food tasted as if my own mother cooked it. It was plentiful and HOT! It did not require any additional seasoning or sauces. Even our 6-year old, who eats like a bird, had seconds and thirds. We also had pizza at Hickman's. It was cheesy, but I didn't like the crust. The game room had a good assortment of video games, but it was on the pricey side. The indoor pool was FILTHY! It had used band-aids, lint, and hair in it. The water was on the green side, so we cut our swim short. We did some light shopping at the candy store. The service was slow and not as friendly. The Festival of Lights was impressive. We didn't make it to the zoo as there were just so many other things to do. We will certainly make this an annual tradition... I'm just hopeful they do something about the pool. read more

My group of 24 golfers have been coming down to Oglebay every spring for over 20 years. During our stay we experience all of the amenities that Oglebay has to offer. Food, the breakfast buffet in the lodge is world class and well worth the money. Just don't forget to tip your server. The food at the golf course is on "par" with any golf course. My only compliant is that the meals (lunch/dinner) at the lodge are over priced and not very good. As a result, we started having our dinners catered by an off-site company. Regarding the golf courses, the Spidel courses (Palmer and Jones) are the signature courses at Oglebay. Jones is an older course with tight fairways and very slick greens. On average I would give Jones a 7.5 out of 10. Palmer is a newer course that is much more open, wide fairways and much easier greens. I would rate Palmer a 7.25 out of 10. Crispin is the other course, it is the oldest of the three and it shows it's age. It's a fun course and can be very challenging, especially if you don't know how to play up or down hill lies from the middle of the fairway. Overall I would rate Crispin a 6 out of 10. The only issues are they typically overbook tee times so it is not uncommon to have a 5 (+) hour round of golf. Although they have a lot of staff working as starters, they don't have many rangers on the course making sure pace of play is being kept up. Lodging, for a group my size I highly recommend the cabins. They are private and you can stay up and party as late as you want, or go to bed as early as you want and not bother anyone. All of the cabins have been updated over the last few years and are very nice. The lodge rooms are nice but if you are taking a group of more than 6 people, spend the money and get a cabin. My only real compliant about the lodging is the check in process. Oglebay makes this a lot more complicated than it has to be and honestly, this can start off your trip on a bad vibe just because of the customer service experience at check-in. Lastly, the one thing I have noticed over the years is that every year we see a lot of the same people year after year. 90% of them are very nice and accommodating and want to make sure you have a great experience. However, you will run into one or two staff members that act like you are bothering them. Not sure why Oglebay doesn't get rid of these people, maybe it's because they have a limited area to draw employees from and they are short staffed to begin with and they would rather have "a person" in the role, even if they are the wrong person. Bottom line, as long as you make alternative plans for dinner, go into your day expecting a 5 hour round, prepare yourself for a less than exceptional experience at check-in and know that at some point you will run across a staff member with a bad attitude, you can have a great time at Oglebay. That is why we continue to come back year after year. The "little issues" are bearable and the overall experience is still a great one. read more

Driving in to the resort the grounds are immaculate with deer, fox, geese and turkeys roaming the property. I have some concerns that I wrote the GM about and did not hear back, thus my post. First security was concerning. Our door would not shut completely and remained ajar. When I noticed my door was ajar when I returned to my room I was more careful to make sure the door was completely shut. I noticed other doors in other guest rooms that had the same issue. I went to a co-travelers room and knocked on the door. A staff member waked by and offered to let me in that room....I said are you serious? Finally regarding security we had an intruder at our event posing as a family member. An obvious scammer we sent him off running errands like getting ice, napkins and the like. We informed security but the security person was only interested in cookies. The food service is extremely slow. Lastly, our bathroom shower had a significant black mold issue, very gross and surprised that this room was presented to us. I asked housekeeping to clean and they did a mild wipe down and much of the mold remained. Gross, the staff had not reaction to comment to the unsafe condition. The people at the Crespin course were very nice and helpful. The course was an excellent value for $42.00 with a cart, the course was in excellent shape. The Jones course was a well kept course but played extremely slow and was not much of a value for $90, staff there could learn from the folks at Crespin. read more

Old, outdated, and in need of an overhaul. Talk about stepping into a time capsule. We booked a room for a wedding and when I looked up the reviews before we left I thought people were being too harsh. They weren't. We were in the "renovated" section and could not believe the low quality internet speed, strange smell, and lackluster AC. When we got into bed the first night I noticed the flat sheet on the bed instead of fitted. There isn't anything wrong with that but couple it with the scratchy thread count and it is the perfect combo for a sleepless night. When we laid down that evening I told my husband "I can't sleep, it's so stuffy in here." He called to the front desk to ask about a fan and was quickly told "we don't have any" and the lady hung up on him. We stayed at the Hampton Inn down the road the night before this stay and that's where you need to be. $400 for two nights on a wedding block discount rate at Oglebay is laughable. I wouldn't have griped one bit if the price had matched the experience. The bright spot was Allie who we spoke to Saturday morning. She apologized and gave us a box fan (in fact, she seemed pretty aghast that someone told us they didn't exist). Allie was the exception to most staff we met: unpleasant, grumpy, and not happy to be at work. We tried to get back to the Hampton for night two but they were booked. Our stay at Oglebay was comped which helped ease the sting. What a complete disappointment because the grounds are beautiful. GO TO THE HAMPTON INN ON NATIONAL ROAD. Oglebay is a classic old school resort. Like many of these older resorts, the main lodge is a large rambling building which has evolved over time encompassing different wings and amenities. My experience was very positive with a beautiful, newly renovated room with a fridge and awesome balcony. The room was clean and the beds were firm. My only complaints were the toilet ran (not a big deal called down to the front desk for a repair) but the lighting over the vanity was lacking making it very hard to shave. I was there for a conference, so the rates were a little better, I did not use the grounds, pool, or arcade. The conference amenities, rooms, electronics, and food were outstanding. Only a little over an hour outside of Pittsburgh, Oglebay is truly a treasure. We had an amazing time hiking through the trees, past the lake, and under cascading flowers. While there are many dining options at Oglebay, the best is definitely the Garden Terrace. It may not be the best choice at lunch during the height of the summer, but at any other time, you're able to see so many beautiful parts of the park and are sheltered by an umbrella. It's also very cost efficient with two prime filets costing less than the price of one in Pittsburgh. The food and service were outstanding. There's so much to do here. You can go fishing, paddle boating, hiking, biking, swim, and go on a Segway tour. Try to get Hannah as your guide; she's incredible! There's also a spa but I'd take a pass on that one. The prices are absurd. I've been to many highly-rated spas that are far more reasonable. I'm told you can tour the original house, but this was not an option when we were there. Hopefully, we'll be able to tour it next time around. read more

I travel to the area 2-3 times a year and I had been wanting a reason to stay at the resort. The price from booking.com fit with my travel budget so I jumped a the chance. From what I had the chance to experience it is a very beautiful property. I was however disappointed with the customer service. I appreciate that this particular day they were stressed due to a storm causing a power outage on Saturday which was projected to last through Tuesday. I maintain that they should have contacted me immediately and give me the option to change my plans before I drove 2 1/2 hours. Oglebay said it was Booking's responsibility to notify me, not theirs. In the end no one contacted me. As a result I had to contend with no power, no hot water, and no on site food (and that was before I discovered the room wasn't thoroughly cleaned and the beds weren't all that great). Because of their 4pm check in I had only :30 to get cleaned up before a meeting at the nearby college not leaving me many options. I was put in a room on the 3rd floor and because the elevators use power I had to use the stairs. Because hot water uses power there was no hot water for a shower and still none the next morning even after power had been restored. On top of the power debacle the beds were the worst I've experienced in a hotel. One tipped when I sat on the edge and the other was not comfortable and squeaked. Also, no one has vacuumed the carpet behind the door because dust was an inch thick. Not what I expect from a fine resort. What bugs me the most is that I sent my concerns to the management (I always do before I write any reviews). Given the nature of the situation and that I could potentially be a repeat customer I had hoped to have gotten a little bit more than the auto-generated survey and email that finally showed up a few days later. read more

This park is beautiful and inviting! I went for a round of golf but a storm was moving in so I missed out. They have 4 course with in the valleys of Ogle bay. Did you bring your clubs? Your hiking shoes or your bike? Lots of deer running around. I saw Bambi too. A lot of 45 degree fairways. Grounds are expansive with something for everyone. Cottages, camping and a main lodge with a beautiful view setting upon the hill overlooking the property. A sweets shop with gifts and keepsakes is stop by the entrance to the park with a fountain, garden and awesome view of the valley. A lot going on for all Adventist types. read more

Went to the spa for manicure and pedicure. Had a terrible experience with the nail technician Sandra. When she was filing my nails, she kept filing the skin underneath my nail rather than the nail itself, and made me bleed! She also made me bleed on two spots where she cut my cuticles! A 10-year-old could do a more careful and professional job than what I experienced at The Ogelbay West spa! Do not come here for any reason, completely unprofessional, and they actually injured my fingers!!! if your client's hands are bleeding during a manicure due to your unskilled treatment- your "spa" has a massive problem! The nail technician's name was Sandra and she does not know how to give a manicure without injuring the client. Just a terrible experience! read more

Beautiful place to visit and the accommodations are nice. Minor quibble over only having decaf and tea in our coffee service but the front desk took care of that. The area that they really fell short was on the food. We were there for a special event and took several meals there. Breakfast buffet had great items but every morning nearly everything was cold or at best room temperature. We attended one banquet and that was not good. Dennys would've been an improvement! Prices are reasonable compared to some of the other resorts in the region. They have individual rooms and cabins that can accommodate a couple of families. I am writing a review for the spa at Oglebay. Horrible experience! I will absolutely never go back! My son recently graduated and has a "real" job now. This was the first time he bought me a gift himself with his own money. he was so proud of himself. He booked and secured a massage for Mother's Day using his credit card. I took his girlfriend with me. When the massages were done, they told me what I owed. I told them, my son had put a card down when he made the appt. The first girl, said, "oh, yes he did". Then, couldn't figure it out. So someone, a manager possibly came out, said, "oh, well we got a new system so we can't pull up the card" and laughed. I did not find this amusing. The poor girl with me, felt bad, trying to pay, then pay me back. I did not take her so she could pay for the massage! It was very embarrassing. Then, I get home, my son was so upset about it, which, of course, made me upset. He tried to give me money, but I felt awful taking his money. And quite honestly, I should not have been aware at what he spent either. I am so disgusted and angry with the entire situation. Was not even so much as offered an apology. I emailed and gave them several days to respond....nothing. Not even the courtesy to reply. First, maybe it's not a good idea to get a "new system" the day before Mother's Day or do your job and have things running as they should or have someone there that knows what they are doing. This is of no fault of the massage therapists, and I have only good to say about them. This spa truly ruined my Mother's Day! And they offered nothing. We stayed here because we were attending a wedding here last Saturday. We stayed Thursday - Sunday. And most of our family was staying here. This place was not what I was expecting. For all the hype and amenities, this place did not live up to it. The room was needing some attention (basically clean...outdated) and the carpets were needing cleaning. The pool area was dirty, hot tub was hotter than any other I've been in and the chlorine was horrible. The restaurants are not somewhere I'd go again. It seems like they try to put money into everything except the rooms. If I were to be in the area again, I would stay elsewhere. I expected way more than I received. read more

DO NOT STAY AT OGLEBAY! IF I COULD GIVE "0" I WOULD!!!! WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!! (and I have traveled a lot) They messed up my reservation that was made on December 1st for our family vacation in July 2024 (we rented a 8-bedroom cabin). We received a confirmation and they also took our deposit. In January, they called and tried to move us to two 4-bedroom cabins instead of our 8-bedroom because they messed up reservations and were trying to get a group in and take our cabin. I did not accept that offer for the very reason why I booked a 8-bedroom cabin. In February, they called again stating that we did not have the 8-bedroom cabin (again confirmed and deposit was taken). They again offered the two 4-bedroom cabins. I, again, declined that offer and said we will keep the 8-bedroom. They claimed that this "group" signed a contract and that the 8- bedroom should not have been on the website as an option for me to book, but I clearly did! Shannon (the reservations supervisor), then proceeded to say they are giving the 8-bedroom to the other party and that our reservation is cancelled and they will refund our deposit! Now we have to go (4 months after making this reservation and people taking time off of work) and try to find another resort to book in July. Who is running this place? So Oglebay does a special Sunday 1/2 off adventure pass. The pass includes swimming, mini golf, paddle boats, and more. The passes on Sunday are only 9.99 each plus tax. The workers were pretty attentive and accommodating. We enjoyed kayaking, paddle boats, hydro bikes, and swimming. Even with the social distancing there was plenty of room around and in the pool. Changing area in the bath house felt like 1920 but that's ok. We ate nearby but you can easily spend a day or two enjoying all that Oglebay has to offer. read more

I am not a regular reviewer but I need to speak on my experience at this terrible location. We headed up there for a wedding and the very first thing that's wrong with this place is reception. The girl at reception was rude like no other and just very nasty. She doesn't compare to the people at breakfast. No one told us when breakfast was over so apparently we headed there too late but everyone there were very vulgar about it. As soon as we got there, with the nastiest attitude the old lady told us "oh I guess everyone is coming in late today" and right in front of us told a cook "I can't tell them no". We also over heard the server saying "we don't serve breakfast past 10, only on Saturdays what the f*ck." Everything we asked for was basically thrown at us with no manners. If we would've been kindly turned down, we would've had no issues going some where else. Not only that but these people mess up your reservations. We had a friend who got there at 3PM and was placed in the wrong room, but that didn't bother her. What did was that it was dirty. It wasn't until 9PM when she finally got a room however the receptionist cussed at her. There was non stop talk about how everyone's rooms were messed up. The wedding planner also will ruin your "best day ever" so many issues with that. They will change what you planned for months ago, 2 days before your big day. And when you confront them about it, they ignore you and give you excuses. For the love of god, don't come here!!! It's not worth it, it's super expensive and they treat you like trash. The indoor pool is disgusting, there was a diaper there for 2 days that no one cleaned. The food is terrible. And just the customer service sucks here. I work in customer service and I never in my entire life would treat people like this or have experienced such terrible service. DONT COME HERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

I was at a company "team building" meet this past week and I had a few disappointments. My room was dusty, hair on the phone and dirty soap dish. I feel like the room had not been clean in awhile. I had an appointment to have a pedicure and the staff was wonderful but I fell ( when leaving ) from a pool of water at the exit.
