This place was highly recommended by the lady that ran the B&B we were staying at. We decided we can't really go wrong with 3 courses for 20 euro, so we checked it out. It was busy and noisy inside when we arrived, and when the hostess asked if we had reservations, we figured we were out of luck. Fortunately, we scored the only table left. All of our food was excellent (especially the gratin potatoes), and the portions were huge. Honestly, by the time dessert arrived, we were already stuffed, but the options sounded so delicious that we just had to try them. My Strawberry White Chocolate Meringue was so good that I ended up eating the whole thing, and therefore leaving in somewhat of a food coma! A terrific restaurant. Housed in the old Huguenot church / meeting house (hence the name of the street) it is a little cramped but what a great experience. It is almost worth travelling to Cork just to eat here. The staff are very helpful and be sure to follow their suggestions. A special starter was "Ox cheek" which sounded a bit gross but left us wanting more. The waitress promised she would replace the starter if we didn't like it. We arrived later in the day and this was the last stop in Ireland. We were pretty tired, but wanted to scope out a spot for the St Patrick's parade, which was the next day. After looking around we decided we needed food and the Strasbourg Goose looked like a winner. My husband had the lamb shank with mint and I had garlic prawns with a Caesar salad. We thoroughly enjoyed both of our dishes. The staff was nice and the restaurant was lovely and cozy. I would recommend this place for a nice and quiet dinner. read more

Following the recommendation of our B&B host in Cork we went to Strasbourg Goose for a dinner. It just like what our host promised us; small restaurant with good food and great hospitality! Two of the wait staff who serves us is really friendly and knowledgeable of the food and drinks that they served. We had 2 set course for 20 Euro each. We had beef salad and deep-fried mushroom for starter. It was really good. The beef has unique texture - crunchy on the outside, yet soft and melting on my mouth. It creates a good fusion flavour all together with the crunchy vegetable on the salad. My boyfriend is really happy with his deep-fried mushroom. For main I had Lamb Shank. It was superb! Well cooked; The meat just falls of from the bones easily. It comes with mint sauce that I cannot have enough of it. Portion was generous! The fish that my boyfriend had also taste really good. Crispy fish skin, soft meat, and mild sauce that give a good balance for the dish. After 2 courses, we were so full, but do not want to skip desert! So we shared a Banoffee Pie between us. Simply the best Banoffee Pie we had in a while! It was fresh and leave nice after taste. Definitely value for money! :) read more

My wife booked The Strasbourg Goose for our anniversary dinner. Despite booking in advance, we could only get a table for 9.30, which I took as a good sign. We were seated promptly on arrival, but after a few minutes when I asked if we could order the waiter said he wanted to move us - we were seated at a four-person table and a party of four that he had forgotten about had just arrived. After waiting for a couple that had paid to take their leave, we eventually went to a free table upstairs. To compensate for the delay, the waiter gave us each a glass of wine on the house. To start, I had the pâté, which came with thick slabs of toast and cranberry sauce, while herself had deep-fried mushrooms. Both were fantastic. For our mains, I had a shank of lamb, which came on a bed of mash and was accompanied by a rich gravy. The lamb came right off the bone. My wife had steak, which came with a kind of piped mash, topped with a tomato chutney of sorts. She wasn't so keen on this, but it wasn't unpalateable. The steak itself was smoky and delicious, and the mushroom and peppercorn sauce as great. As well as all this, we were presented with a dish of potato gratin and a bowl of green beans, which were soaked in garlic. Neither was on the menu, so this was a pleasant surprise. Both were simply delightful. For dessert we both had raspberry cheesecake - it's hard to get this wrong, and they didn't. To top all of this off, the three courses cost just €21. The only gripe I'd have about this place is that the toilets are tiny, and it's hard to get in or out of them. But that's an equally small complaint on my part. Went here with a group of 5 on a Tuesday night. Walked right in and got a table without a reservation. We did the 22 euro for the 3 course meal. I love that you can sub a glass of wine for the dessert. Food was delicious! I had the pate to start and the duck for the main and highly recommend both. Other dishes had by our group was the salmon, the mussels, steak, fried mushrooms. Everyone was happy with their food. What a great deal! Three courses of hearty Irish fare for €20, and you can substitute the dessert for a glass of wine. That deal won't be beat. The interior looks like an old chapel. It is small and cozy, with a few tables on a gallery overlooking the rest. I can't say enough about the delicious sirloin steak and the baked potato accompaniment. This is a fantastic restaurant. They have a small set menu with all you could want, and I've had steak on both occasions that I've been here. Rare is cooked quite rare, which I was very happy with. The place is pretty small but always busy, though the staff are willing to take walk-ins as long as you're quick to eat. They have a lovely selection of wines and the house selection is very nice indeed. The service is generally pretty good. I'm taking away one star just because they didn't quite get my order right-- there are a lot of choices with the steak between sides and sauces and it was all a bit mixed up on the table. Luckily I had been between a few minds about what I wanted so I was happy enough to eat what was there. Very mixed reviews for this place. Steak was so tough I needed a chainsaw to cut it, but the Hake fish had by several in our party was excellent. The pan fried chicken was also quite good, and there were plenty of sides for the table, but a few annoying order mistakes. The chicken and bacon starter salad was also quite good, as was the seafood chowder. In all, if you pick the right items, it's a good deal for 24EU for a starter, main and dessert. (unless they overcharge one of your guests who only had the main). That irritant, and a foul body odor smell from one of the waiters left us with a bad taste in our mouths. This is a great restaurant and is always busy. You can make reservations but if you are prepared to wait for ten or fifteen minutes you will get a table. The value is brilliant. A three-course dinner of the best quality for only €21 is brilliant value. We tried the Ox-cheek special starter on the recommendation of the waitress who promised to replace it if we didn't like it. The Ox-cheeks were just gorgeous. The two sirloin steaks were served on a bed of mashed potato with different sauces and some chips and onion rings. The accompanying vegetables were the same for everybody. A dish of yummy gratin potatoes and a dish of garlic green beans. The beans were very garlicky which is great so long as your partner eats them as well. Otherwise you might be banished for the rest of the night and most of the next day. The restaurant is housed in the old Huguenot meeting house church, hence the name of the street, French Church Street. It is only a few paces off Patrick Street. The place is tiny with accommodation for only about 60 diners. There is an upper balcony with three or four tables and the whole establishment just feels cosy and welcoming. The toilets upstairs while being spotlessly clean and fresh are very tiny and you need to be a bit of a contortionist to get into them and close the door behind you. So use the loo early in your visit cos you will be much heavier later into your meal. This is a place to enjoy. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by Strasbourg Goose. Didn't think you could eat so well for so little! They offer 3 courses for €20 - wine or beer isn't included but you can skip dessert for a glass of wine if you prefer. The restaurant is quite dark, not a whole lot of natural light as it's down a small pedestrianized street. Service was almost too quick - the mains were put down as soon as we were finished with the starters. But who can complain when the food tastes good! For starters, I had the pate with crostini and my husband had the handmade sausage with relish. Pate was great, slightly sweet, and tasted fantastic with the garlic crostini. Sausage looked a bit small, shall we say, but hubby said twas good. Mains were hearty and outstanding - my filet of pork was covered with delicious cider mustard sauce and his duck breast was perfectly done, crispy skin an all! We got lovely roasty green beans and potato au gratin on the side, family style. Desserts were on the very small side but what was there, was great. Perfect place to collect your sanity and sate your belly after a day of shopping on St. Patrick's Street. read more

Place was great. I spent the Thanksgiving holiday making my way through Ireland and the U.K. and ended up in Cork at the end. Met my first cousin for the first time too, okay enough of me. I called this place for a reservation based on reviews, I wanted a steak, because you know I can afford fancy stuff. Anyways, the man who answers the phone is like um yeah, are you coming right now ? I was like yes be there in the 20 we are staying at the river lee.. He says okay, see you tomorrow and hangs up. I was baffled by all of this, so we taxi down because well I walk no where and stagger into this place which is down this quaint little cobblestone alleyway. The guy comes over and says did you just call ? I said yes that was me, he says "I said I would see you tomorrow" i'm at a loss and then smiles and sits us. Just a good ole fashion ball buster. My kids loved their meal, I liked my steak but didn't love it, I'll be honest I have turned into quite the douchebag when it comes to steaks now, I want PRIME always. Abe and Louies, Strega Prime et al..... However; I got to see U2 twice, learn all about the Troubles in Belfast and have the best cab ride ever up there, and went to Bono's house, a less than prime cut steak isn't going ruin my vibe.... Of my 11 days of dining in Cork, this was one of the highlights. Well priced, good service and tasty food. I had the home made sausage appetizer, and the Lamb Shank main, both of which were tasty. The lamb shank could have come with a bit more sauce however. Desert was the "blueberry" pie. As delicious as it was, it only contained about 2 blueberries, the rest were raspberries or blackberries. Went here with my mom on vacation from the states. We got the goat cheese ciabatta and the pate for apps, both were great. For mains, mom got the Ribeye with the blue cheese sauce and I had the one with the garlic sauce. I was very impressed with the quality and the flavor of the meat. As someone who grew up in the heart of steak country in the western US, and now living in NYC with many top steakhouses, this was absolutely superb. My bar to say that is very high... I ate so much here my stomach hurt after. Only complaint would be that when I called in to see how busy they were, the waitress who answered basically said they were too busy for reservations and earliest to come in was 8:30. We chanced it and went in early and there was plenty of room, so better communication on that part would have been appreciated. read more

We were able to get a spot for half an hour later, when we dropped by at 9pm. For an earlier dinner, you might want to call for a reservation, it is quite popular. I can see why. The food is really good, the service is nice and the interior is pretty unique. They have a 3 course dinner for €21. I tried the smoked chicken pasta, rib eye and the raspberry cheesecake. They were all quite delicious, but the rib eye was so good, so juicy, it wiggled when tapped it with my fork. (I ordered medium rare, it came all pink inside, but it was not chewy at all, very nice). read more

This place deserves all the good reviews it gets! Went here last October with a large party of my family and my boyfriend's family. There was no problem with the reservation, and we ended up taking up a good part of the restaurant as it's quite small. It's a good price for the amount of food, and what food! I've been dying to go back ever since. My only criticism is that the toilets are extremely small, and up some quite steep stairs. I always like to give a place a chance so I have been here three times. It's always the same staff on and the food is consistent. €20 for three courses, or you can take a glass of wine in desserts place. The cheapest wine is a bargain at €13.95 and is ok having tried both the white Argentinian and the red. I have had the mussels in a cream white wine sauce delicious both times to start. I have tried the chicken pâté , a little flavourless and it's not sealed (butter) so it's a little off colour from the fridge. I have also tasted the sausage and the fish cakes both tasty smallish portions. Lamb shank is Devine, boring that I am I had this all three times it was perfect. I also chose to have chips as an alternative to mash and there was no extra charge. There is plenty of choice on dessert I always take the chocolate cake but u can have a mini baileys or Irish coffee.tasty. Corkage fee of €4 I think, so that's pretty cool. The atmosphere is ok wish they would have music though. Or if there is some they need to turn it up. Staff aren t the most friendly, but they are always busy so you should book. It's perfect for€20 , been twice as a couple and once as a gang of girls, enjoyed each time. French Church street has a great choice of restaurants and Strasbourg Goose is certainly one the highlights. The cosy ambiance and low lighting make this one of the most romantic restaurants in Cork city. As other yelpers have said three courses for €20 is great value. While you can't go wrong with the food, the option to swap a course for a glass of wine or beer is great if you want to avoid a food coma. The last night I had dinner there I got the vegetable stew for the main. While it wouldn't be something I'd typically order, it was (unfortunately) the only vegetarian option on the menu. After it arrived I was very happy with it, it was spicy vegetables topped with mashed potato. I robbed some of my companion's bruschetta starter and it was amazing, I'd recommend it to veggies and non-veggies alike. We had the cheesecake for dessert and while it was tasty it wasn't particularly exciting. All in all, some really good food. read more

Not sure who is giving them high reviews but it can't be anyone who actually knows a decent steak. We are from the United States on vacation and have a pretty good feel. We ordered the 12 ounce ribeye special. it was undercooked, gamey, fatty and chewy to say the least. Also, the place is not very large yet it took over 10 minutes just to get water as we watched our waiter clear tables next to us without offering us anything. The side dishes were just OK as well. The whole experience took well over one hour despite only being two of us and them having a total of 10 tables in the restaurant so if you are on the move this is not the place for you. I ordered 2 entrees for €18.50 and got the house salad and slow roasted beef that "melts in your mouth" pros: salad was interesting and overall ok for most people, beef was very soft and did "melt in mouth" cons: salad had many spices, and was very acidic. Seemed like a lot of vinegar/mustard in it. The beef had a very bland taste and could've been in a better tasting sauce. Overall: service was great, food could be better for the money. read more

How can anyone not love this place! The price is unbelievable at 21 for 3 courses. You can bring your own wine with corkage for 4euro which myself and my guests always love. I bring anyone that stays with me here, the atmosphere is cosy, it's always packed and the staff are very attentive. They change the menu often and some of the dishes (monkfish/steak) would cost a bomb in other places. I don't know how they can get it so right and some other more expensive places in cork so wrong! I know I sound related to someone on the staff or something but no, I just think this place is amazing. I like rolling home after dinner. OK so I've never written a review of anything before but after tonights experience I couldn't help myself... Have been to this restaurant years ago and the food was so bad we couldn't even eat it. I was told that things had changed and that now the food here was great, nice atmosphere etc.... Totally wrong. Worse than I even remembered. Had fishcakes for my starter, tasted like they were about a week old. For my main I had the duck breast. Very little duck, was mostly a totally horrible, sickly sweet sauce covering the plate. We went for my friends birthday so ordered a dessert for her, thought we couldn't go wrong with a strawberry and cream with pastry. WRONG!!! I think the pastry was older than me, very unpleasant. Can't believe the good reviews this place gets. Having spent much of my youth working in various restaurants and bars, this has to rank as THE WORST RESTAURANT I've ever been to. AVOID AT ALL COSTS... Try Electric or somewhere else instead, don't care how cheap it is for a three course meal, rather go to McDonalds.... Would give 0 stars if I could.... read more
