Bring your ideas, sample images and imaginative concepts. This is not the kind of place that you pick a tattoo out of a book. SUPER CLEAN - the place is spotless and well decorated. Lots of original art on the walls, antique clocks, and old 19th century chairs for guests to sit in. Very classy! SUPER SANITARY - James is laser focused on maintaining a safe, sterile and sanitized environment. All tattoo needles are one time use, opened from sealed package and discarded. He goes through crazy number of supplies. New glove every time he has to answer the phone or touch something. He thoroughly washes down tattoo skin area with sanitizing solution. He provides detailed instructions on keeping tattoo clean as it is an open wound when you leave. SUPER ARTISTIC - James is focused on creating an image on your body that will look good in a decade. Many artist only focus on how it looks when you leave their shop. Ink diffuses over time into the fatty tissue. James will tell you if a small detail is too small and therefore the tattoo would need to be bigger or detail is not workable. He told me that all three of my tats needed to be bigger, and he was right. He also is good at understanding how people might interpret a tattoo differently than you intended. Give him your idea and you can be confident that he'll shape it into a design the will withstand time. He has always taken my concepts and worked them into a phenomenal design that was better than I could imagine on my own. HIGH STANDARDS - James is the owner and the tattoo artist. The last guy that worked with him made a comment that his standards were too high. James appreciated his honesty and told him to not come back. He highly respects the fact that he is applying permanent images on people's bodies. SPECIALIZES IN REPAIR - did you get a bad tattoo elsewhere? James is known for covering, fixing, correcting the mistakes that a lesser tattoo artist left on your body. TIPS - All meetings are by appointment. You might walk in and be lucky to catch him available for a consult, but best to call and schedule time. - Expect at least one consultation, if not two, before you schedule a tattoo. Since this is custom work, you need to discuss the job with James, and if complicated enough, you'll have a second consultation to see his proposed sketch of the tattoo for review before he creates the final tattoo template. - Think of meeting James as meeting up with a friend. This isn't a strictly-timed business appointment. He works by himself and has to fetch supplies, he gets stuck in traffic, and he answers phone calls...just like you. You might arrive at the shop before James does for your scheduled appointment. That's ok. - James will turn down jobs that he doesn't want to be associated with. For example, during my first tattoo, someone came in asking to get a My Little Pony musical note on their rear. James said no. Another guy wanted a design with a boy below the underwear line and James said no. The latter tattoo was well intentioned but James refused on basis for how it could be interpreted. - Heavy Metal - if you like it, then you are aligned with James's music taste. If you don't like it, then learn to appreciate it since you'll be hearing it for hours upon hours during your tattoo. - Illegal to drink before getting a tattoo. Don't do it. If James can tell you are under the influence then he probably will not be able to give you a tattoo that day. - Illegal to bring kids inside the tattoo shop. James was a great dude, we walked in on a whim, my lady wanted a Georgia Peach, how classic right lol !!! We got soooo lucky apparently bc we walked in at the perfect time, hes a really busy guy and he's an incredible artist. We sat down and within 15 minutes he had a schetch done , he added just the right amount of pizazz to the peach to make it something different, my wife has several tatts that have flowers on them so he continued with the style. Stranded Tattoo Studios was my first experience at a custom tattoo design and I'm totally grateful as to how James and Kenny handled it. First of all, I was an in-town-for-only-one-day WALK-IN and had the audacity to mosey into the shop with only a vague idea of what I wanted. But what I could articulate was big and complex. After his initial look of disbelief, Kenny made a couple of phone calls and rearranged a few clients and managed to get James in on his day off to do my tattoo. My guidelines were these: I wanted a mechanical owl. More steampunk, but no monocle. Less "Clash of the Titans". Not as cute as Bubo, but not menacing, either. I wanted it big and in color. James totally nailed it. And he worked on it for almost 7 hours until my skin crapped out and wouldn't take any more ink. 7 hours, people. Kenny locked up and went home at around hour 3. The friend who came with me got bored and disappeared to drink flavored martinis from hours 4 - 6. I totally felt like dying at hour 5.5. As it stands now, I still have about 2.5 hours to go (which I prepaid for so there's no backing out even though I now know how painful it is to get your wrist area tattooed). In addition to James's infinite patience and skill, the shop was immaculate. The music was a little loud and not to my taste but, if the artist likes to listen to death metal in order to make a good tattoo, I should just sit back and keep my mouth shut. So, to recap: 1. James and Kenny are super accomodating and nice guys, but don't be an asshole like me and stroll in without an appointment. 2. Wrist tattoos hurt like a mf. 3. I don't like death metal. 4. I'm hardcore because I sat through 7 hours of tattooing with little complaining and even less squirming. James called me a "trooper." read more

First off I want to start off by saying this is the cleanest and nicest tattoo shop I've ever been in or seen for that matter. Here is a synopsis of my experience there though. First, I walked in just to get some info about a cover up on an old tattoo I had. In my past experiences, most tattoo shops I've been in are very stand off ish and can be a daunting experience. These guys were super welcoming and very professional! Like I said before, in my past experiences, Ive never experienced professionalism like this in a tattoo shop. After making an appointment with James (later that day) I gave him an idea of what I wanted and what I wanted to cover up and seeing his past work I gave him free reign. I live in HI so am not able to come back and forth for several sessions so he did it in one session! First, I gave him something to cover, then I asked for a realistic mural on top of it. Not an easy task. James' attention to detail is remarkable. Anytime I asked a question about what or why he was doing something, he didn't make me feel stupid or beneath him. He did not, but I was able to see the piece that he was working on on a gentleman's back and it was awesome, lines were crisp and there was a lot of detail. We drove from Charleston, SC to Savannah to find a custom tattoo parlor, and we hit the jackpot with Stranded. If you want a simple, cookie-cutters piece out of a book, then this isn't place for you. If you want a one-of-a-kind piece of art, then look no further. There are only two artists here. James the owner, Ryan his fellow artist, and Kenny the studio manager. The bottom line is that they are all genuinely nice people and as a result they are nice to their customers. They listened to the ideas we had, took time to explain what what work and why, and then sat with us to come up with some designs. The studio itself is also very artistically done and it's very comfortable and inviting. The whole experience was just great. Went in for a small piece. It was something I'd planned to get for a long time, and decided to stop by Stranded to see if they could squeeze me in. Kenny was incredibly helpful and eager to fit me in, and Ryan did such a great job. It was my first tattoo, and he really put my mind at ease. Even though Ryan is heavily tattooed, he was very considerate, made sure to answer my questions, and made sure I was comfortable as possible. I would have totally understood a little eye - rolling at the nerves I displayed as a first-timer, but it was a fantastic experience. Place was very clean, all the equipment was clean and sterile.
