This review is entirely based on a phone call... That said, if customer service is good over the phone, it'll be great in person. I say that because it is easy to give subpar service on a phone call without someone in front of you. I called yesterday because the Ace website said Oakdale had a Yeti Roadie 15 in the limited edition patriotic color. Sean (or Shawn) answered and went above and beyond. He checked their inventory not once, but twice. Then, when he couldn't find it, he helped me locate it in another store. He then called the other store and made sure they pulled it for me. That kind of service makes me want to go the extra mile to shop at the Oakdale location, just based on my experience. read more

Trying to get our sprinklers done in our new home is a nightmare working with these people. Salesperson was somewhat chauvinistic and also not helpful at all. Inventory was severely lacking. Coming from a city that had a much better Ace Hardware, this was a bit of a shock. Looks like we won't be going to this Ace Hardware anymore. It's a bit surprising, considering that the other Ace Hardware's that are owned by the same person are much nicer to work with and more helpful. This review is based in the last 6 months or so. The I've been in here multiple times where the service just stinks. I understand remodel and all that but to avoid helping a customer or just have a snotty attitude is what pushes me to go to riverbank or Sonora big box stores. Today I came in for 2 big purchases back pack blower and an electric pressure washer. Or only did the employee look the other way when I made Eye contact they later just helped some one else. Armando (Super Clerk!) intercepted me today (Memorial Day of all days to be working) asking what I was looking for (with my paw full of o-rings and a brass rod). Directed me to aisle 19, rhs. A few minutes later he appears to confirm I found what I needed. This store was busy, mind you. I hand Armando a 20.5" threaded brass rod and he goes and gets one to thread for me. Saved me several days and $30+. This store is such a gem! So fortunate to have these folks here in Oakdale. read more

I will start by saying they do not enforce the mandated face cover. They do have most things that you will need from bike tires to paint & everything in between. The staff is pretty knowledgeable in their own department. The store can be crowded. read more

Prices are higher at Ace, but it's expected for convenience. Typically, I get help and they have the item I need even if they don't have the biggest selection. I can look past the prices and options with good service, but unfortunately, that seems to have gone away. I used to get good service about 70% of the time, to be honest, I'm tired of the other 30%. Today I went in and was directed to a man on a lift for my questions. That employee was not only rude but also incredibly condescending. I've done more than a few projects, but he acted like I was such an idiot he would have to come down from his lift and stop his incredibly important task. Maybe Ace should stop putting their staff in uniforms if they are unavailable to help. I've literally spent close to 4k there for different items over the last 18 months since buying my house and doing a renovation. Unfortunately, I will be going to Home Depot from here on out, I don't have to pay extra there to get treated like garbage. 11/21/20 - I am no longer giving my business to this store. Management does not require that their employees wear masks and they do not require customers wear masks. Every other store in town does this. This is SO disrespectful to your customers that you don't care about their health, let alone your employees. No shoes No shirt No mask NO SERVICE! read more

08/16/20 - I originally wrote a review two months ago. I decided to stop by yesterday to see if things had improved. They had put up signage about mask compliance but not one employee had a mask on. Seriously folks? Covid-19 is ravaging Stanislaus County - as of yesterday there have 12,379 positive cases, 198 deaths, and average number of daily cases is still way too high. Additionally, unlike other stores where you have to ask for someone to help who are not knowledgeable, ACE always has someone on hand to help you get what you need. If I could give this place no stars, I definitely would. One of the managers, Mike, doesn't know how to treat customers, much less manage a store. I tried returning something I had for less than a week, explained the issue I was having with it, and he proceeded to call me a liar and said we couldn't exchange it for the same one, or even get store credit. I had the receipt the whole time too, and when I told the cashier I was fine with upgrading it, he acted shocked, as if I was trying to scam the store or something. Convenient I guess would be the right word since I believe it's the only hardware store in town. I have shopped here for years. Light duty home owner type supplies which is good, not heavy duty contractor products. The last time I went in, I found what I needed, walked up to a register and waited behind one other person. After he left the cashier irritatedly told me that for future reference, the line starts over there, pointing to the right. However, I'll take you now because there isn't anymore in line. REALLY ? I have never seen a line starting point ever here and I would have definitely waited in that line if it were apparent. Locally owned and operated, Oakdale Ace, makes all their customers feel at home! We are working on a 60+ year-old home outside of Oakdale so the Ace Hardware store is a frequent stop. From finding the most obscure fastener/screw to a custom paint order, this team is the best. I really need to give a shout out to Kris R., "the paint guy," who was beyond patient helping us with our 21+ gallon order. He and his manager went above and beyond with pricing...the 5-gallon bases were not going to be available for over a week. They managed to give me 5-gallon pricing after all. They also held the cans at will call for my painter to pick up. Kris even gave me a follow-up call to let me know I left behind a couple of other paint samples! Now that's customer service. The checkout crew is beyond polite as well as efficient and super friendly. FYI...I would take the negative comments on Yelp with a grain of salt. Frankly, I find them hard to believe. This is a supply and demand kind of store. Being that they know they are the only hardware store in Oakdale, they mark up their prices. Overpriced items, very strict and stingy on returns, and not a good variety of items to choose from. As much as I would like to support my local business, they make it hard being so selfish with their prices and returns. Very stingy on military discounts as well. They only offer discounts on certain items. There is no way of telling which items the discounts apply to. You only will find that out at checkout which is a very inconvenience. Me being a Oakdale resident, I will not be shopping here anymore. I'll conduct my business at home depot, Lowes and Amazon for now on. read more

I visited Ace last Monday and was extremely disappointed to see that the staff was not wearing masks to protect themselves and patrons from Covid. Stanislaus County has a very high rate of Covid infections as compared to other counties. I observed one male employee with a mask over his mouth, not his nose. I saw a woman cashier with a mask hanging from one ear, and not even an attempt to wear the mask correctly. She was not behind a plastic shield. The man assigned to the paint department was not wearing a mask at all, and refused to wear one even after I brought it to his attention. Stanislaus has over 800 cases per 10,000 people compared to 500 cases per 10,000 people in Santa Clara County. But, Santa Clara county has THREE TIMES the number of residents that Stanislaus has. Is it because of this cavalier attitude of the businesses in Stanislaus County, that these high cases are present? I think it is a factor. I will not shop here again. read more

Worst Ace Hardware in the Valley! Customer service is terrible, and the employees think they are way more important than they really are! The store needs updating, and the employees let you walk around without bothering to ask if you need help unless you're a regular. If you don't like your job, or you don't think you're getting paid enough go work somewhere else but don't treat customers like crap! My recommendation is go to Strand's Ace Hardware in Escalon! Went into Ace a week ago and none of the 20 or so employees were wearing masks and that was after the state wide guideline for wearing masks in public went into effect. I asked one of the clerks about it and she said all 20 have medical reasons. Really ALL 20 employees. Hmmm. Won't be shopping there for the foreseeable future which is a shame because I like keeping my dollars local. I really believe in SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESS BUSINESSES. This store may not have the lowest prices but they are competitive. A friendly greeting and readily available customer service is worth every penny. I know I will get what I need and not get up-sold or talked down to because I ask too many questions. I love ACE. I practically live there. Have a lot of stuff that Home Depot doesnt have like all their air fittings. Doesn't have as many tools, but has enough. Best part... Free coffee as you walk in the door lol. I'm a professional woodworker. I like ACE's variety of glues, stains, air fittings, and especially their screws and other fasteners. Blows other hardware stores out of the water for screws. Still not quite as good of fasteners as Fastenal tho. read more

On 5/16/20 Ace had Clark Kensington paint on sale. Apparently there is a label change that makes the cans appear to be different sheens. When I called the paint department to clarify the lady who helped me was somewhat helpful however a bit curt and condescending. I would have expected some clarification at the time of purchase and more courtesy and reassurance over the phone. read more

I miss a lot ofvthe Old timers who have retired. However the currentcstaff are very knowledgeable! I have had mini session on DIY while they were directing me to my every need for the current project! They have made my sink pipe fix, toilet parts replacement & window, caulk etc., and the list goes on over the many years I have shopped there. I highly recommend asking a few questions before you get started, whether the employee is male or female, they are All very knowledgeable and if you need info. in an area they are not fully knowledgeable on they will call another who can assist you. Shout out to Matt, who helped me on the phone today to locate the right product for my issue.
