Women working in customer service today 3-19-2025 are the nastiest r rude service reps my wife and I have ever encountered. All over a posted savinags of one dollar on Vermont coffee. On line stated sale price but was told not on sale in Sparta. Was told by this rude customer service rep I could travel to the stop and shop listed on the sale even though Lavazzo was on sale for half price which we bought. If this happened n Shop Rite customer service would have worked with me. Don't waste your time going to stop and shop in Sparta. I've never been to a Stop and Shop. I really haven't been missing out on anything. I will start with what I liked... I enjoyed the different shopcarts, the produce was really nice, I had my strawberries for over a week and they are still fresh with no mold and my apples are still crisp. The dairy department was nice and people were friendly and the store was empty. I didnt like the prices and there was not a lot of options for food. Not a lot of different brands. Almost every item I bought was at least $1 or $2 more than my food store. I had a gift card, so it didn't bother me as much. I will stick to my other food store. But it was nice trying a new place. read more

After the long wait, Sparta has a decent supermarket. The place is big and well lit. Great lighting, nice bathrooms, a good number of check out lines, self check out options, much better produce area and a fish case. All great things. I think this place had a chance to really do something impressive, with a "wow" or "cool" factor. Didn't happen. We got a nice, big, clean, well lit store with good parking. Nothing impressive with prepared foods (huge miss in this town), no accommodations for online shopping/pick-up, no in store coffee shop (maybe something else is coming). read more

Clean store with good items, nice staff as well. However, the pricing in here is highway robbery. So much so that they should have all employees wearing ski masks. Everything in here is double the price of the new SR in Sparta . I go to SR now and my grocery bill is now half, with equal quality. Last time I went to stop & shop in a pinch, because they're closer to me and I needed shallots and some heavy cream. I paid $6.59 for a quart of heavy cream, they had no shallots, so I was forced to run to SR. I checked the heavy cream price there just to prove the price difference and in SR the cream was 3.09. I bought the cream in SR and returned it to stop n shop. I kindly told the lady that the manager is going to cost them they're jobs if they don't lower their prices, since stop n shop had eight shoppers, while SR was fully packed. read more

I stopped by yesterday to purchase cereal and oranges. They were out of oranges. I don't ever remember a time when a large grocery store didn't have oranges for sale. The store is large but the selection of items is limited. The produce is often old or second rate. They fail to carry a lot of main stream brands and items. I go here for my produce because there's another near by grocery store that is notorious for it's rotten and putrid fruits and vegetables. Stop and Shop has the BEST produce and their prices for said produce are very good and most of the time cheaper than aforementioned grocery store. Horay for S&S's giant packs of berries! I do occasionally pick up other groceries here. Their deli and bakery departments are always nice and have a great variety of products. The prices on their other foods and products throughout the store can be expensive compared to other stores, but they do have some great sales sometimes and I honestly can find things in this store that I've never seen in any other grocery stores. They have a great variety of healthy, natural, and organic food. That said, I am giving them three stars because every time I'm in there and rounding the corner from my precious, golden produce department, heading toward the meat department and past the seafood department I have to hold my breath. I have never in my life EVER smelled such a horrible smelling meat or seafood department in a store, and I will NEVER purchase meat or seafood from that store for that reason. It's not just a strong fishy smell, it is the smell of rotten fish and meat mingled with the strong, strong scent of bleach that you can only imagine they are using to cover up their shame. Let me just say the other store I was talking about with the horrendous produce...their fish department smells like fish, just fish...their meat department doesn't smell like anything when you walk through it. This goes for about 35 other grocery stores I've been in throughout my life so either they let their meat/seafood sit there until it rots or they have had some dead chicken-fish hybrid animal hiding in the air ducts for the last five years that needs to be cleaned out of there. This store is beautiful and clean, but that is where the positives end. Their produce selection is not as varied as other stores. The deli line always has no one there waiting to help you. You have to wait for someone to finish doing something else behind the counter to help you. Items are also overpriced. Running in few just a few items will cost between $50-75! . Lastly, they are understaffed at checkout. My last few trips had no express lines open and only two other lines open. People were forced to use self checkout, but the woman manning that area does not know what she is doing. The self checkout for larger orders should have a divider so you can bag your items while the person behind you can start theirs. read more

Very nice store but it's so crazy busy every single self checkout was full and there was a line. I could live with that but every other customer had an issue and there was no attendant to be found. When he showed up, he was surly at best. Fortunately, I know how to be surly right back. The store only gets worse, never better. It is staffed with unintelligent non-thinking people who just collect a paycheck and are never ever helpful; there is no real customer service.Today, I called to ask for a product and they said they couldn't look for it for me but that they were sure they didn't carry what I needed. I drove to the store anyway and found it myself. Also today, the organic bananas were mixed in with the regular bananas. When I pointed it out to one of the produce people, he told me ,"There are no more organic bananas". I said ,"yes, there are plenty of organic bananas but you have regular bananas mixed in, negating the idea of buying organic" He looked at me with such a blank stare and did nothing to correct the situation. I really don't understand why Sparta puts up with this? This store doesn't strive for any sort of excellence. There used to be 3 grocery stores in downtown Sparta. Now we are stuck with a store that some politician must have some vested interest in. read more

The Stop & Shop in Sparta really needs to step up its game! Last month, I think they had some corporate visitors. For a week or so, things improved - it was cleaner, fresher produce, the staff was polite and helpful! Really enjoyed the change, but now has fallen back into bad habits. The stench when entering/exiting store has returned ... what is that? Customer service is always very slow and cumbersome. Hoping things will improve soon or I will shop elsewhere. read more

The only reason this store survives is because there is no other food store in Sparta. All of the locals openly refer to the store as "Stop 'n' Rob" because of the astronomical prices. Once in a while they'll have a good sale, but in general, expect to pay a 25% premium for shopping here over ShopRite. read more

Slop and Rot. The produce is moldy on the shelves. The meats are fetid and stink. I buy here only because it is close, and will only buy when I absolutely desparate. I shopped at the previous location and that place was disgusting. The new location is no better. We are in Sussex County, we can get fresh produce around the corner, why is Slop and Rot selling moldy produce and stinky meat? Moreover, who keeps lobbying against a new Supermarket and WHY. Why is Slop and Rot allowed to prevent fair competition within Sparta? Suspicious, greedy, and poor public service. read more

Stop and Rob - a glorified 7-11. Convenient, but ONLY in emergencies when running low on an item for a recipe. Otherwise, avoid at all costs. Overpriced in general, poor quality of meats. read more

Although the Stop and Shop is convenient, on more than 2 occasions within the last 2 years I bought groceries that were returned that they just restocked on their shelves or left out too long waiting to be stocked. One was a box of skinny cow chocolate treats that someone had opened, eaten out of & returned, I couldn't tell because the box appeared sealed shut & they just restock it first in line to get rid of it & not lose profit. Another occasion this week when I bought 1/2 gallon of skim milk, today is 1/23/16 the expiration date is 2/1/16, it's spoiled; tastes and smells awful. Groceries are overpriced & there is rarely anyone on register, so customers are forced to use the self kiosks that always malfunction. The attendants are so used to the kiosks malfunctioning that they don't even ask what the issue is, they just swipe their card, press a button & walk away. read more

This particular Stop n Shop is pretty well! The parking is never an issue, and in fact it is actually a Super Stop & Shop so I guess that means it's bigger and better than regular Stop & Shops. The produce is always fresh, and the staff is okay. Sometimes they won't have what we're looking for, and they do have high prices. Which is the downfall of this beautiful store. But I would rather shop at Weis, Fresh Emporium, or Shop-Rite instead of this place. read more

Outragiously expensive. Their prices are at least 20% higher then ShopRite. It wouldn't be so bad if their produce was better, but their produce always appears to be old! The scanners for self check out are the worst out of any grocery store I've been to. And, using the scanner guns is a joke. Every single time I've used one, they have to check and scan my items again. What's the point!? I can't wait for ShopRite to open up down the road. read more

Big store. Well lit. Adequate variety. Good parking. Those are the good points. Non-competitive pricing would be a polite way of saying it. No prepared foods worth talking about. Stocking sometimes appears to be hit-or-miss. Days go by for some items to be restocked. Iffy meat and seafood departments. Sparta definitely needed an updated store and we all waited patiently for the new Stop and Shop to open. I shop there mainly because of the convenience. It also carries most of what I need - although usually at a higher price. However, I was greatly disappointed to see that they discontinued the Salad Bar. I asked countless times about it and was given a myriad of excuses by staff, produce managers, and chief store manager. The excuses ranged from, "It will be in next month," "The bar was delivered and is in the back, but we're waiting for the architects to get a plan." "Yes, believe me, no one wants it as much as I do." Well, two years later and next month never came and I guess the "bar" is rotting in the back waiting for a design plan. In the meanwhile, the customers are waiting for a convenience we had to give up with the new, wonderful upgrade. It is unfortunate that management has to lie to us, their loyal customers. I can say that for myself, whenever I possibly can, I go to Newton where I can get a salad bar. read more

Decent store though expensive. I usually purchase 'sale' items and usually leave paying over $100. I do like the handheld gadgets the store offers but the checkouts should be designated for the people who use the gadgets. People go on these lines and then ring their products one by one which causing people like me having to wait. read more

The Sparta NJ SnS senior shopping time 6am - 730am created because of the coronavirus situation should have been thought through a little more by their management. It was a disaster. As I expected there was a line to get in to get a cart. Some just ran to the toilet paper and paper towel isle without a cart; the smart ones. No other shelves were restocked or were being stocked as we shopped. I heard a customer asked about celery and the worker said they'll be coming out. But when. The produce was sparse. Why were we allowed in to only find empty shelves and just a few pieces of meat. The seafood/fish counter wasn't even open. Then we had to wait in a line to check out that went all the way passed the pharmacy section, through the frozen section, and across the back to the empty meat section. I was in line for 35 minutes, They needed more than the 3 cashiers they had. I think a 4th came around 7. I just kept asking myself why am I here. Is the food supply this thin. Why did I and all these other seniors get up early to find this disappointment. It was depressing. Never again. I learned there are other food stores in the area where this doesn't happen. Decent supermarket. Prices are fair (not the best or worst prices). Always busy, but not so crowded that it's a hassle. They have a great bakery, but I have bought sour milk on a few occasions and milk that spoils too quickly - all I can figure is that it sits out too long when it's delivered... read more

So frustrating...selves always empty and not stocked....such limited chocies, items disappear and never show up again. I have stopped even trying to ask for items....no celery for two weeks in a row and no notes about growers issues...a number of items that have sell by dates of yesterday or today.. This store is the worst supermarket I have ever been to. The prices are very high compared to other supermarkets. The stocking of this store is pathetic . I have called and spoke with managers regarding this issue and one response was I guess you will have to go to another store to get what you want. I really hope people stop shopping here so they go out of business . We need a Shoprite on this site not a store that doesn't care about their customers. Mike was actually a very kind reviewer! I was so grossed out just weeks into the grand opening that I was finding moldy cauliflower, rotten peppers, wilted greens, and soft broccoli. I felt like it was crazy to have this huge brand new store, and NOT a clue how to handle their produce. I said something to the managers, and they were rude and defensive. The customer service manager, even saying "Well I shop for my dinner here." as if I was crazy. Still two months later, no change. So I wrote a letter (online), unaware that it would just go to the store. The store manager called me and seemed very nice, but also asked for my qualifications, asking how I knew so much about produce?? Well, I'm not a trained chef, never went to culinary school, and although I'm a sussex county native, my mama taught me to not eat MOLDY food! There are my qualifications.... so he asked me to do a "walk through" with him to show him what was upsetting me. AFTER I waited over 20 minutes for him to see me on my Saturday, I spent a good 10 minutes showing him peppers that were so rotten and wrinkled if they'd been in my fridge I would have tossed them, the wilted wall of kale, herbs, and lettuces, and the loose and rotten garlic, he too seemed to defend that it was off season, that not everything could be perfect... never taking responsibility for the horrendous quality. While it may not be pepper season, if I go to A&P I can get fresh crisp peppers, and they are coming from the same place that stop and shop gets theirs, so it's clearly an in store problem of how the product is being handled. Not to mention- what ever happened to that whole "the customer is always right" thing? Management was aggressive, defensive, and out right rude in some cases. Also- FISH shouldn't SMELL. Fresh seafood has a "scent" NOT an "Odor", I was passing the other day and it was near gag-inducing. Even if it wasn't malodorous- everything seems to be farm-raised, no wild-caught. Lastly- if you are forced to go, as some of us are since it's the only store in town, use self checkout. I have, on multiple occasions been checked out by cashiers who didn't say a single word during the entire transaction, one who was texting the entire time, one who was talking about her bad internet date to the other cashier and also didn't greet me, and the guy who blew his nose then touched my groceries. :) All together- Unfortunate. The actual building is beautiful, it could be something, it's a shame and a waste. read more

Frustrating store, do not like layout and stocking, pricing seems fare service ok. Drug store area not competitive and limited hours make cvs the choice locally, meat department so so often run out of normal items or near expire date. Fish department confuses me so I avoid it. read more

The people who work here are great, especially in the pharmacy. While prices may be a little high on some things, the gas points make it all worthwhile. I regularly get $1.00 off per gallon at Shell stations which makes a huge difference. Love the Stop and Shop brand cold cuts at the deli, the sales on meat and the online coupon downloader. read more

This store never seems to price things correctly. On multiple occasions I have reached for an item placed above the wrong price label or stupidly trusted vaguely placed signage. Lo and behold by the time I am checking out, I am pressed for time and complacently pay extra for things. Who has the time to deal with that crap every time they shop here? Best example was a sign board above blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. One side said 3.99 each, another said buy one get one free at 3.99. The berries were not labeled individually so one would think that they were all 3.99. Good thing I wandered around the corner to another stand and saw the price difference for each berry. Long story short it is bs and I will gladly drive 10 miles to Shop rite where they don't pull this crap. read more

I think that this store could be a health hazard. There too many occasions where food is at or beyond expiration dates. Case in point, recently went to the store to buy fresh bean sprouts for stir fry. The packages that they had were still frozen !! Cant understand why but the expiration date had been reached[ they were also marked as on sale]. Why would any produce mgr allow this to happen ?There are no competitive stores in town causing me to drive 8 miles to the nearest real supermarket. read more
