So disappointing to see the decline of Stop & Shop in Arlington. I already have a job, so I usually skip self checkout, but last week the lines were way long for a live employee. Choosing apparent speed over actual speed was my first mistake. My second mistake was following the instructions to place my item in the bagging area. I placed it right there in the area marked BAGGING AREA, but could not ring in any other item because the machine did not agree that I had performed as directed. Along comes an employee who persuades the machine that I had performed as directed. But oops, I did it again: I scanned an item and put it in the bagging area. Back comes the nasty little employee with nasty remarks drenched in sarcasm, all about how she's here to help me but can't do that if I don't calm down. Calm down? Help me? I decided to go elsewhere, and on my way out, she shouted remarks about religion. There was no need to escalate this already unpleasant situation like that. Just had my first interaction with the new digital coupons. Fistly i notice sales and savings i typically enjoyed using my regular s&s card had changed, leaving my typical card saving me less and higher prices after savings. Then after interacting w the cashieer and having the digital coupon explained i then "after additional undue hassle" managed to get the digital coupon savings. Despite being digital u still need to physically clip them? Also the limit of these saving to one use per item kinda stinks. Prior the card savings were if a item is onsale thats the price as long as i use the card. Now the sale prices "card prices" are higher insentivising the use of the digital coupon of wich i can only get the savings once. It feels like this is a way to inflate prices/offer less savings or limit savings not to mention create a system making the savings harder to access for some. I like S&S and my poor review is a reflection of this very lack luster new program. Disatisfied with it and wish my card still was my primary means of savings in the store. The Arlington Stop & Shop has really improved their selection of natural foods and things I used to have to go to WF to find. In fact while WF cuts back on selection and generally suffers from Amazon culture of squeeze the customer and limit inventory to store brands, S&S is now much better. A few weeks ago I went to WF because I thought they had upscale flowers and I needed a bouquet as a gift. Their flowers were scanty and tired and expensive, so I went to S&S and found they had a great selection, fresh, lovely, good price, nice dept manager who gift-wrapped my purchase. S&S recently started carrying a bigger selection of tea, including the Traditional Medicinals line, which was literally my last reason to ever go to WF. The customer service is extremely poor. The store managers act like grown children and don't know how to deal nor de-escalate. Complaining to the management team and talking to a wall is about the same thing! They will always have their employees side (rightfully so) and I also don't agree with the "customer is always right" mentality. As a customer who has complained over and over about the same issue and has even called corporate about it I can honestly say they don't give a flying F*c* and visiting the store after filing complaints the side comments and looks are uncalled for! The store needs better management and training for the store reps! Not all employees of this location have a bad attitude but the young black/Spanish girl, the big homosexual guy, the white lady- store manager or assistant manager needs a hobby and possibly a new husband(she's always so rude) & the facial expressions are completely unnecessary, and the Indian lady who's usually in customer service/ self check out area need to be retrained or fired they have no respect! #1 I usually shop at Market Basket simply because the price. I dont think stop and shop got the memo that they should stop using supply chain demands as an excuse for price gouging yet. #2 I primarily shop here for last Minute items as well as their deli. They have Prosciutto De Parma for $21.99 per lb which sounds insane just typing but D'agostinos charges $31.99 per lb! When one is indulging in an expensive deli meat one expects it to be handled properly. Woth prosciutto that means trimmed of the fat and sliced appropriately and shingled as its sliced thin and hard to separate. I have bow had the displeasure of rubbing into lets call her the lady with the big mouth and zero custom mer service skills. I asked her to trim and slice 3/4lb of prosciutto thats roughly $17 of deli meat. I could tell immediately by her behavior and attitude she already didnt want to do it. She shoukd have just asked for help. She grabbed what appeared to be last weeks leftovers and i asked if it had been trimmed. Her reply was we trimmed it last week. Well she proceeded to cut 1/8 Thick slices and piked them as if it was pastrami! It may sound petty but when yoir spending a premium on deli meat it should be handled appropriately. I immediately informed her that the slices were too think and she couldn't just put it in a mound. It needed t o be shingled and wax paper between each layer. Its not my rules it just proper deli etiquette. She proceeded to berate me and used fouls language. Those was in front of the deli manager who stepped in. But apparently of he did have a word with her it didnt stick because the next time i walked into the store and approached the deli she exclaimed "oh no, NOT THIS M F'ING Cracka again. she said i could go F myself and she wouldn't be helping me which to me was s relief however i was shocked her coworkers and manager allowed this behavior! I know times are tough finding good help but keeping bad help is worse than being busy. Im not going to Dags for $30/lb maybe go to Somerville stop n shop and try my luck. Avoid this store. The store is clean, but the woman who runs the customer service desk is quite rude. Her name tag says Mary Beth and I have never encountered a consumer retail working as nasty as her. Her attitude is just awful. Nasty! She rolled her eyes at me and mumbled something along the lines of "this bitch" as I asked for lottery tickets. I glazed over it shocked, and quite frankly put off. But when I asked to do a western union she simply rolled her eyes, put up a sign that says out of order smiled at me and said nope, it's down bye. Stop & Shop Arlington Yeegads. What a terrible store. I have been in multiple times and it's just baaad. Everyone, and I mean everyone, I've interacted with seems to hate their jobs. Not a single thank you to be found upon checkout, not a single smile from anyone, employee faces all scream misery and miserable and even the shopping bags suck. What kind of grocery store uses bags with no handles?? Good luck if you live nearby and just want to walk and pick up groceries, and even two bags of groceries become a hardship getting them into your home because there's no handles. This store just feels sad and tired. There's usually maybe two checkouts manned by actual humans (miserable humans, but humans) and I refuse to do self checkout bc I'm not being paid to ring up and bag groceries. The store has limited selections on many items and is expensive for what it is. I'd rather drive 12 minutes to Market Basket in Burlington and have a good shopping experience than drive 4 minutes to this Stop & Shop. This store is awful. So many times I have seen the frozen foods, especially i ice cream and frozen vegetable items in horrible condition. They never clean up the shelves and just leave these defrosted and refrozen items on display. The products are ruined and should not be left for sale. This happens on a regular basis! Another problem is the store manager who is obnoxiously loud and seems to be always bellowing out at one of the cashiers or other employees. Does this woman ever realize how annoying her loud screaming is to customers? Almost every time I have visited this store I can hear the same woman shouting something at employees. She should be making sure that food items in the store aren't in the same condition as the ice cream in these pics. A decent store. I hope here when I don't have the time to go to Market Basket. I've good experiences interacting with workers in their baked goods and deli departments. When I've asked for help in other departments, I've gotten help 50 to 70% of the time, which is decent. They have decent deals on fruits and vegetables sometimes. Another bad experience at this store. BUT! I think this is a Stop & Shop corporate problem rather than the fault of the specific store. In brief S&S is now offering Digital Coupons via their company app. You set up your account and can read all the weekly sales, etc. and you get a a few Digital Coupons for items on sale at prices only people with the app can use. Well, the first time I used one of these DC' it didn't work when I went through the self checkout (which by the way is no pleasure to use.) I clipped the coupon and it was noted on the app. The discount just did not appear. I went to the Customer Service desk after paying and the Rep said I must not have clipped the coupon, but he did make the price adjustment. There goes another waste of time. Today I went to the same store and clipped the digital coupons for Progresso soup and a T-Bone steak (both significant savings.) Being mindful of the first SNAFU with their DC's I quadruple checked to make sure I clipped the coupons before going to checkout. I mentioned to the cashier that I clipped two DC's and hope the discount prices will show up. Guess what? The cashier said they didn't show up when scanned at the register and, by the way, you need to clip these coupons at least 24 hours in advance in order for them to work! What??? There is no mention of this 24 hour deley anywhere on the app or on the "Digital Coupon" signs displayed next to the sale items. So, basically S&S advertises sale prices and does not honor them unless you just so happened to have clipped the coupons on their app 24 HOURS before you go shopping. Is this a rip-off? Absolutely. Is it bait and switch? Absolutely. Can it be done better? Absolutely. Star Market has a similar app and as soon as you clip the coupon you will receive the correct advertised discount at checkout. Review from Aug 2020 visit to Arlington - saved as draft until now. I was raised in Arlington, knew S&S well but didn't recall it to be such a disappointment in organization, customer service and products. They had minimal fresh meat even at deli and cost was outrageous. I went to a self serve cash out and was being "watched" like I was going to miss paying for items in my cart. Was even told by front supervisor woman that I still had items in my cart when I paid 1st half of my cart since I was ringing up two separate orders. I thanked her for noticing but explained I had two orders. Sadly racial profiling to the wrong person as I dont need to nor would I ever steal. Ironically the moment I am walking out a white caucasian male walks out the front door with his hands full of groceries and the same supervisor asking him if he'd like to go back in to pay. This stop and shop is on par with the seventh level of hell. I asked on of the shopkeepers the direction in where the cheese was and was appalled by the cheese. It was half dried out with the plastic wrap ripped off. When I told a shopkeeper about this I was punched in the face and was told to "find a better one myself" I briefly caught a glimpse of the shopkeepers name before hitting the ground and saw their name was Victoria T. Today is the perfect day to update my update that I have been wanting to do for months. This specific S&S is horrible. So I'm taking back the 2 stars I added from my last update. I wish I could take back all 3 stars because they are definitely a MINUS ZERO star establishment. There's not a single business that can match their MINUS ZERO level of customer service. I don't even blame their grumpy employees. It all comes down to management. Start treating your employees with some respect! The prices here are beyond ridiculous. Its just a basic grocery. Fits all of my needs, fresh produce, coffee, organic milk, frozen junk, very basic toiletries etc. Parking lot has plenty of space, which is a coveted bonus in this area. I love their promos, I recently saw one for "buy their brand, get ours free" but it didn't register at checkout. Customer service fixed it immediately which I'm thankful for, but it took some time. One of my only true pet peeves is stores not honoring deals posted, but they did so I appreciated it In summary, it all shakes out to average, if you want high brow look elsewhere but if you're looking for an average grocery, I think it'll do just fine. loyalty card required for sales but when I go to self checkout, I just click forgot mine and still get the deals which I'm ok with. read more

FAR less expensive than WHOLE PAYCHECK up the street and WAY FAR better selection of product. It is easy in easy out. The hard working staff are wonderful folks if you allow yourself to get to actually know someone who can't afford a house like the one you live in. The busy deli has a wide selection of cheeses and cold cuts for every need, cut to your preference. No other place in town can match the variety of seasonal items available. Never again That's what I swore The time before So I went into Stop and Shop, picked up a bag of mixed apples along with a ton of other groceries, and marched up to the register. Put everything on the conveyor belt, pulled out my wallet, smiled and said "hello" to the person ringing me up. She scans items, ignores me twice when I asked for paper bags, and then stops at the mixed bag of apples and says, "Did you put the green ones on top so you could get them for cheaper?" Jaw. Drop. Me: "No, I picked them up just like that from your display. They're all 88 cents per pound anyway." Mr Manager walks over, starts bagging the groceries in plastic. I ask for paper again. Ignore. Before I roll my cart out of Stop and Shop for the last time ever, I stop the manager and say, right in front of cashier, that I found her and her question to be incredibly insulting and rude. She said, "Well I was just making sure...." Queue Mr Manager's dropping jaw. You know what I'm making sure of? That Stop and Shop gets no more of the $5,200 I spend on groceries annually. I saw the 5 star review given from the kid from Waltham and I felt compelled to write-what the hell are you smoking?? I have lived in Arlington for years and go in there frequently for small stuff ONLY. I have witnessed rotting produce, expired products, and decaying seafood-to name a few reasons why I don't spend any serious money there. The bright spots are that some of the baked goods are pretty good and I really like some of their employees. One of the managers, I think her name is Kathy, never stops moving and it seems like she is always dealing with one problem or another when I am in the store. They are lucky to have her. THIS PLACE IS NOW OFFICIALLY BEYOND WORTHLESS! My wife came back from the store with a wedge of Romano cheese tonight. She hadn't realized that the plastic wrap was torn and half the cheese had dried out. No big deal I thought, right? I'll just return it and buy another one. I did the return and headed over to the cheese cooler. I then proceeded to pull out SEVEN or EIGHT wedges in a row that all had torn plastic, and all were starting to dry out. I thought I had found a small wedge with no torn plastic, but once I got it up to the front of the store, I realized that it was torn as well. What a complete waste of time. I don't know if the staff is too stupid to realize that the plastic was torn, or if they just didn't care, but either way, this grocery store is beyond pathetic. I should also add that I bought a package of organic strawberries and every one was rotten or moldy... all the other packages I had looked at in the store were the same; the one I picked looked better from the outside, but the produce itself was complete crap. But say you need staples also, like T-P, & milk, Kashi cereal, yoghurt, so you can drive (or walk!) across the street for that after picking up your giant order of take-out B-B-Q, is that convenient shopping, or what? And just Maybe: You don't feel like going to the Whole Foods in Fresh Pond & driving around for an hour in the parking lot to find a parking space, paying 2x the price for everything, & battling crazed Yuppies over a 1/2 lb. of salmon. Or going to the Shaw's on Lex. St. in Waltham, which is great, but so huge, you need a map, & a Sherpa guide; you'll spend an hour in there to find 15 items. Stop and Shop Arlington is so BAD! The service is pitiful i was in there and it was busy and they had only 2 cashiers open. The line I was in in front of me was an employee and it took them so long to check them out because they were talking to each other. The cashier had no respect for the regular customers in line. Second they do not have items in stock...for example they sell bottles of diet coke and coke products but when i went in there two times this week they did not have any of the product i was looking for. Also they claim to make there own muffins but when i went looking for fat free muffins they were all out. This was at 8am one hour after they open. How can you be out of muffins in one hour? To top everything off the service desk employees do not help anyone. I was at a self checkout and need help I asked this male employee who was heavy set for help and he just looked away. I guess cause they are the only stop in shop in Arlington they can do what they want. Well my recommendation is go to some other stop and shop like Winchester they have much better service and more products in stock. They are much more willing to help you! read more

No fresh meat cutting section? No seafood section? Okay, I get that space is limited, but there is so much space dedicated to the deli section. I like making my grocery trips a one-stop deal, but this just takes the cake. I don't think I've ever been to a Stop & Shop that has prepacked seafood (or perhaps I've been spoiled by normal grocery stores that allow shoppers to make their own choices about a particular cut of fish). Oh, and the dispassionate employees that line the store aisles and don't really pay much attention to customers that need assistance? I think some folks need some retraining. Poor Stop n' Shop. It doesn't have the hipness factor of Trader Joe's or Whole Paycheck. Not half as beloved as Market Basket. Still, it remains the only game in town if you want basic stuff that TJ's doesn't stock, and still want to hold onto your wallet in the process. I mostly shop in the later evening, and maybe things are different during the weekdays. But it seems like there's no one manning the courtesy booth and no one monitoring the self check-out lines in the evenings. I admit, I should have learned my lesson years ago with those self check-outs. Frequently there's an issue, and in those cases, it takes a while to get someone's attention or to find someone who actually can help. During one of my latest visits, I found that the check-out line I was in ONLY ACCEPTED CASH. When I finally got someone's attention (after waving my hands and calling out "hello??" at a rather unladylike volume), the Stop n' Shop employee said "Oh, so you used your debit card? That's the problem. This register only takes cash." Well, it would be nice if there was a sign there. She thought there was, but there wasn't. Oops. This happens pretty frequently - self check-out doesn't give change and you have to go to the courtesy desk for change (and it's fun when there's no one there). Self check-out lines CAN work, but only if there's an employee who's actually on hand to help people (like CVS or Target). Again, maybe things are different during the daytime, but in the evenings, there really is a feeling that no one's steering the ship. A few cashiers are helpful and friendly, but many employees seem like they'd rather be anywhere but there. A few months ago, when they were remodeling the produce section, they didn't bother putting signs on the door explaining that the produce area was closed, which would have been helpful. This place is an abomination. I only shop here because there is nowhere else to go nearby. Of course, I shop at Trader Joe's as much as possible but they don't sell a lot of items there (don't even have ziploc bags). Moreover, I'm new to Massachusetts and my bank doesn't have a branch here so I figured I would cash checks at the Stop'n'Shop customer service counter. Filled out the paper work and the woman said that in a few weeks (!) I would be eligible to cash checks there. I go back today and the lady asks to see my Stop'n'Shop rewards card. I tell her that I don't think it's under my card, just my name, because no one looked at the card when I signed up for that service. As it were, I'm not in the system. Apparently there is some special manager who is only there on certain times who signs people up for this service. I'm advised to call her and sort it out. (At this point, I've decided not to pursue it and just go somewhere else.) To me this is emblematic of the shoddy experience I often have at Stop'n'Shop: things are poorly managed and they don't care about customer service at all. For some reason a lot of crazy, angry people shop here. I've twice gotten yelled at by other customers for offenses I apparently committed in the deep recesses of their brains. I've also observed customers arguing with the cashiers over idiotic things, so I was relieved to find that it's not just me. When I was a wide-eyed young maiden, I used to get harassed by mentaly unbalanced people on the bus with some frequency. Now that I'm more jaded and firmly ensconced in middle age, I'm generally left alone, but apparently only because all those characters got off the bus and started hanging out at the Arlington Stop&Shop. The staff here all seem to be very nice, polite, and patient, and they manage to avoid getting riled by the customers, which is more than I can say for myself. I went here this morning with a very specific list of items in hand. One item on the list can be particularly hard to find. The list included: - Two lbs. of mushrooms already sliced (to save some time) - Fresh french bread (to nosh on pre-dinner) - Five lbs. of top round beef (to feed seven hungry women) - Two bottles of bergundy cooking wine (to make this meal a nicer one -- it's also that key, hard-to-find ingredient) I was happy to find the mushrooms right off the bat... followed by a very pretty, freshly baked french bread (yes, bread can be pretty)... and then the top round. The top round just so happened to be a steal with all of the deals they have currently running in the meat department. I got two, three-lb. packages for about $5.00 each! I had to look carefully though, because not all were marked on sale, even though they had the same package/sell-by dates. Yeah, so that was all great. BUT. The one thing I needed more than anything else to make my nice french dinner was no where to be found. They have sherry cooking wine, marsala cooking wine... but no burgundy. They don't even stock it. Why am I shocked? The one thing I need most and I was running short on time. This has happened to me before at this grocery store. They have alllmost everything you need. There's just always that one little thing that you're craving or want for a special meal that they don't have. So, I went to the Belmont Shaw's and found exactly what I needed (two different brands, too). I know where to go next time I need some good cooking wine. read more

I've been spoiled by previously living close to large grocery stores where you can very easily find everything you need & more - like you'd alway leave having spent extra $$ on some new tasty-looking goodies :) That will not be the case @ this store: because it's pretty small, the selection (esp. for produce & organic/natural foods) is crap-o-l-a, they don't even have a seafood area, and they're often-times out of exactly what I'm looking for :( It is, however, about 1 minute from my home, so I will continue going, I just wish they could possibly expand or get more regular deliveries. read more

First of all, I am an avid S&S shopper. I am also a big bargin hunter. This Stop & Shop seems much more expensive than any other Stop & shop I have been in (Medford, Malden, Watertown, Boston, Brookline, and the list goes on). I was shoocked one day when I went in and bought a can of Enfamil Lipil Premium and it set me back almost $35 when I can't even remember paying more than $25. I know, $10 measly bucks, but when you go through this stuff like water (as any parent knows) you buy a lot. Also store seems much smaller than most-both in overall size and aisle width. Most have aisle where you can pass on of those motorized carts easily with your own shopping cart. This one makes it so tight you fear hitting the person in the motorized cart. Also have to agree with the seafood section-or lack of it. Can't get specific cuts of seafood-everything is frozen. I'll continue to go to Medford for that. Overall, not a horrible Stop & Shop, but as the rating indicated, I've experienced better. might be worht the extra 5 minute drive to go to Medford, Lexington, or Watertown (depending on where in Arlington you live) read more

Not sure what all the gloom and doom is about in the comments. I live a block away from this place, so I shop here (and also at Trader Joe's and Costco). They pretty much always have what I want, the store is clean, and it's organized intuitively. Okay, so there are no free samples, and there aren't a lot of great sales. The seafood selection isn't terrific, and most of it is frozen. I've always found the produce just fine, and I like the discount produce rack they have, for when I need a bunch of different peppers for chili and don't care if they're a little wrinkled. I also think there's a good selection of vegetarian, health-food, and low-calorie options, especially in the frozen section. I always go through the self-checkout, where there's never a line (but the scanner is way slow). I did once have the attendant kinda yell at me for mis-entering an item of produce and needing it fixed. I guess if I rang up groceries full-time I'd be irritated when other people did it incompetently, too, but I'd be nicer about it. read more

I'm not too picky about grocery stores, and this Stop and Shop gets the job done nicely. Prices are a little high, and it's not as big as many other Stop and Shops, but they do have a fair amount of things that I like. There are rarely lines for the check-outs which is a nice bonus. The cashiers are usually pretty friendly and helpful. The produce is sometimes a little sketchy, and they don't have a seafood counter. This is what kept this review to three stars. read more

I've been a big fan of Shaw's but when I moved into the area I thought I'd give the Stop & Shop brand another try considering my first experience in one of these stores to have been beyond horrendous. (Considering I've lived here for over a year and managed to NEVER shop at one of their chains until I moved to Arlington, if gives you an idea of the experience quality.) It's nice and close and hence convenient, but I have to agree with the other reviewers that this shop is expensive. I don't have other Stop and Shops to compare it to, so let me clarify: I will drive 3 miles out of my way to shop at Shaw's in Belmont, and I make a conscious effort to buy at the Lexington, Arlington, and Belmont Farmer's markets. Stop and Shop will cover my need for milk or bread in a pinch, but I would rather not (again) buy meat, seafood, or their produce since the selection is a) small and b) hard to find. I have had a mixed experience with the employees, but overall I'd say all the above including Russo's (Watertown) and Wilson's (Lexington) have closer to outstanding customer service, making this Stop and Shop just seem mediocre. I have always gotten help when I have asked for it and been taken to the items location though, so I would not say they were bad. I know better places that I'd rather shop, but overall, not all too bad for a chain grocery store. read more
