Small town restaurant, great food and service. We got lucky to have a sweet little 7 year old "working" and bringing our drink order/checking on us! Prices were reasonable, have specials. Small restaurant so be ready to wait if busy times. Very small restrooms but very clean! I have a mom in a wheelchair so if she would have been with us, unfortunately she would not have been able to get in let alone go to restroom so if you need wheelchair access- not for you. read more

We have become regulars at the Dinner Bell! The food is cooked fresh (although I believe some of the sides may be already heated), the atmosphere is very "small town USA". Breakfast is served all day. My 9 year old and 4 year old order the pancakes every single time just to see what design the cook is going to use on their food (for example, we've seen a flower and Mickey Mouse ears, just to think of off hand). The wait staff is excellent and always friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Just a warning - in my experience, this is not a place to go if you're in a hurry. Because the food is cooked upon order, it can take awhile to get it, especially on weekends (one Saturday took almost an hour from sit down to getting our food brought to us). Ordered chicken fried steak. Way too tough and had a fish taste...daily special was catfish. Fries tasted the same. Wife ordered the catfish special. And it .had to be cut with a knife with a little difficulty. My mother in law didnt taste the fish on the fried, she just commented they were tasteless but her catfish was a little tough to chew. They did offer another steak after I set it aside with one bite cut off. I refused and told them just to take it away. Yet there was no problem leaving it on the bill. Waste of 40 bucks for the meal. We had never been there before and no one acknowledged us at all. The "restaurant" is the size of a crackerbox with 2 steps between the front door and the register. They saw us and ignored us. Our multiple attempts for service were ignored. When we walked in, a woman that worked there saw us and kept chatting with a customer, someone she knew, instead of saying hello and welcome and have a seat. We asked the couple that came in the door a little bit after we had been standing there if we are just supposed to sit. They said yes. No clean tables. We chose one then I walked up to that same woman that chose to ignore us and she wiped the table of the couple that came in behind us even though I was trying to speak to her, took their drink orders as I was literally standing there, ignored me and walked away. The older couple just looked at me because they knew we had been waiting but they didn't tell her. Everyone there was completely rude. It was unreal. Never seen anything like it. We left. Came her for take-out yesterday after hearing great things. We got a variety of food to try. The burger was big and delicious and wrapped up like the old fashioned ones. I wasn't a fan of the big style of fries they use but they were hot and we ate them all. The sour cream chicken enchilada was delicious! Grits could have used more cheese but everything can use more cheese. But they were cooked perfect! Lastly was the fried catfish. They offered jalapeno and regular tarter sauce. One in our group had the catfish/hush puppies plate. Amazing. He said it was the best he had anywhere. Great service. Scratch kitchen all the way. They have a 12oz hamburger, 8oz hamburgers, all kinds of entree's. Check it out. Our servers were the best. Love it, love it, love it! One caveat. Ask for the tomato plate. Update: It has been a week since I got cheated this pla e. The weight staff act like i am a robber taking money out of the register in my book. Customer service is beyond belief. It looks to me like they are hoping I will forget the pie caper. It also looks like the cashier who accidently lied to me is going to tell a half truth to stop me from getting the replacement slice of pie they owe me. I won't go there again except to buy to go and send my family to pick it up. The good it good but there is a problem with customer service if THEY make a mistake. ORIGIONAL COMPLAINT: I went here every day for 5 days straight. Just to eat their other flavor pies. Guess I came here one time too many. I had to hurry home for something and ordered out the usual chocolate pie. Then I noticed they had strawberry. I asked if the strawberries were cooked she said No. I NEVER NEVER buy strawberry pie that has cooked strawberrys. Tastes like BAD jam. When I got home I ate my other flavor of pie which was a wonderful slice. Then went for the strawberry. Oh no it had cooked barely any visible strawberrys and what little were there were cooked. I thought oh well, I don't want to drive back there tonigh ill tell them in person tomorrow and just not order it again. Problem was hardly any visable strawberries. Also it was flat 2 pieces of crust with hardly any filling. Apparently the girl let the filling slip out and did not bother to put back in what belonged in my piece. Im upset at this point. So I said I am taking this back for a piece of my regular flavor. When I got there WITH my receipt the next day. I went in about 15 minutes before seven. I was told that the girl could only take my name down and I had to therefore come back AGAIN with no convenience to me (I live 10 miles away) to have a (I think she said) pie cook on day shift tell me whether I was going to get either a replacement or my money back. They said because it was bought before the next day girl came in yesterday that was a strike against me. Then the girl said I took a bite that was another strike against me. I said look there aren't hardly any berries. She was going to report this in a negative way i could already tell. I told her this was NOT acceptable. Then she went in the back and out came another girl who asked like I just pulled out a gun on them and she said you will not get what you asked for you will give us your number and we will call you with our decision. There was no use i was the customer and I was screwed. With the way thing went already I wasn't going to hold my breath but I am going to ask for my piece of pie back which they kept as evidence apparently against me. And I am going to get my receipt back and take pictures back and post this bad situation on here. Don't want anyone else to get their pie dreams smashed between two pieces of crust at least not strawberry. I love their other flavors n9 problem. My mom made the best no cook strawberry pie with strawberry jello sugar AND corn starch. This cooked pie doesn't hold a candle to it and I feel this was a BIG slap in the face. My hometown cafe. One of the reasons I moved to Van is because of Stoney's Dinner Bell. Every small Texas town has to have a cafe, and this one is ours.
