I judge a store not only by the quality of it's products but also how they handle a complaint .On the latter they fail miserably.Stonewall Kitchen's main product is Jams and they have a dept in some markets .Recently I got a coupon to try any jam with $3 off .I love tasty jams ,and so I bought the strawberry jam.Now Stonewall is not cheap ,in fact you can get most jams including imported ones for $2 or $3 less , yes they get close to $7 for a 12 oz jam .I found the strawberry jam quite good ,and so went back and bought my second favorite jam strawberry rhubarb .What a disappointment ,it tasted like cinnamon ugh ,I hate cinnamon .I have had strawberry rhubarb many times ,the rhubarb gives it a little tang to it .I wrote to Stonewall and got an email back thanking me for choosing Stonewall ,they took note about the cinnamon taste and admitted they were changing the formula by taking the apple out of this jam.And hoped I would continue enjoying Stonewall jams . So they admitted that there was something wrong with their jam and were fixing it ,and here is what tells me everything I want to know about this company .Almost every company in America would send you a coupon to buy another flavor ,NOT Stonewall.Hey we are sorry ,we understand there is something wrong with our jam ,we hope the next time you buy our product our cinnamon flavor is gone .Stonewall you had an enthusiastic buyer ,I pass your store many times and you think by telling me to keep buying your product in the hope you finally get it right ,nooo .I'll keep passing your store ,you have no concept of what public relations is about .You may have decent products but so does dozens of other companies and what could have been you gaining a new loyal customer ,you lost me and my family for life .I would remove your strawberry rhubarb you haven't learned how to make it properly yet or you can't find rhubarb . 3/22/2014 Update Stonewall sent me their new version of strawberry/rhubarb .After tasting it I concluded that the cinnamon was gone but the taste had not improved ,maybe Stonewall had not figured out the right proportion of ingedients .The taste of this jam is dismal .I have bought strawberry/rhubarb from many places ,this one is a flop .Stonewall you are a one trick pony ,stick with strawberry . read more

I tried the Stonewall Kitchen Cranberry Orange scone mix. As I prepared the mix I was surprised that it seemed to have no orange zest and few cranberries. The cranberries were so finely chopped that it was difficult to find any among the flour. They baked up nicely with a good rise and browned up well. I anticipated my first bite, but was totally dumbfounded that it had zero orange or cranberry flavor. It actually had NO flavor. The little bit of flavor that it had was from the glaze into which I put orange juice. Overall, the texture and rise of the scone was good, but where it counts, the flavor, was substantially lacking. I bought 3 packages because I thought that their products would be of good quality, especially as the price was about $8, and have made the other two packages with about a 1/2 cup of added cranberries and the zest of 1/2 orange split between the batter and the glaze. The doctoring up that I did was the same amount of work as making scones from scratch. I have never tried any of their other products, but probably will not because of my experience with the tasteless scones. read more

We had a disappointing lunch there today. The beet salad looked large but was predominately made up of salad greens (only) and the tomato/motzarella sandwich was small in size with little cheese and a grocery bought/waxed tomato - all this for over $20! Very disappointing. read more

Stonewall kitchen has done a nice job of marketing at what appears to be their anchor store. The store is cute and the people were very nice. I've never been a big fan of stonewall kitchen products....which after a trip out west realized they were available nation wide. Here you can get them in just about every speciality store and even some grocery stores. I did buy a few products today, none of which I am terrible fond of. The stonewall kitchen products are very strong and very processed tasting. I went there looking for Mariposa silver pieces because they were listed as a dealer. Didn't find any. I am a huge Stonewall Kitchen fan.Love both,the product & the store.Stop several times a year,since I have a daughter living in Portland.In all the years shopping here I had never took the time to have a bite to eat in the cafe.This past sunday,hubby & I stopped for lunch on our way back home.Do not order the tarragon chicken salad!!Like another post confirmed,it was dry,tasteless and on a cold unimpressive croissant.My husband on the other hand really liked his burger,but found the stonewall ketchup way too sweet,I concur. For the record,the desserts are not made there and are out sourced.Remember, do not order the chicken salad!!Dry as meal! read more

four stars for product, one start for customer service. In a word, Stonewall customer care sucks. Why? I called at 3 pm (pacific) to ask if they could replace a jar of Sour Cherry jam that had only one cherry in it. The person who answered said that I should call back during business hours. When I asked why she answered, she said that she only took orders, that she didn't handle customer service. Well, you got that right! First, I guess the west coast market doesn't count. Second, isn't everyone at any company supposed to be a customer service rep? Obviously, there's a difference in the way Stonewall Kitchen values order givers and a consumer with a legitimate problem with their product. Upshot? As they say, each person who is happy with a vendor tells three people; each person who is unhappy with a vendor tells ten people. I'm working on my second ten. And I will never buy another Stonewall product again. Just call this complaint a case of sour cherries. read more

Though I would never set foot in a Stonewall Kitchen shop in a mall, I love this flagship store. There are samples galore, products for miles, and a cafe with wonderful sandwiches that use many of Stonewall's condiments. For folks driving to northern Maine, this is a great lunch stop - and the perfect place to pick up some gifts for your hosts. read more

Today I had a very disappointing experience with Stonewall Kitchen. I ordered an item which was not the size listed in the catalog. They should stick to food items. I will not order another non-food product from them. They didn't understand my frustration. Item was only $28 with shipping, however, it took way too much time waiting on their customer service to respond. They need to go to SERVICE RECOVERY training. Should have offered a $25 gift certificate at the least and let me keep the product. Don't think I'll be back even for the food. read more

The whole evening was over sold. Our chef read a recipe, never cooked, did cut one mushroom and was totally unprepared. The food, cooked by the staff, was mediocre and came to the table cold. Maybe we just had a bad night, but we paid $60/person for that bad night and I can't recommend anyone else chance wasting their hard earned money on this place. Great little shop and lunch spot off of the highway. I was ready for lunch on my way home from Portland and my mom requested their sour cherry jam, so I popped in. I had a half sandwich/soup and read a book at one of their delightful high tops. I got the jam and a few other things I picked up (they have so many tastings! And tons of cute baking / homegoods items, too). All in all, it was a great stop off of the highway. read more

The products are good but I find similar products in Homegoods, Marshalls and TJ Maxx for a fraction of the price and quality the same or better. This store is a replica of a farmhouse and is amazing. Very clean and organized. The Cafe is worth a visit ,great food and nice atmosphere. It can get busy here! I give the company store about 4.5 stars - it's well organized and airy, with wide enough aisles that it seems like there would be plenty of room to maneuver even on tourist-laden weekend days. I went on a random weekday morning, and it was very peaceful, with just a few other shoppers. I like the free recipe idea cards, and I did dip into a few samples. I came home with sun-dried tomato pesto that will become a creamy pasta sauce, and super-rich balsamic fig dressing that the salesperson suggested having over a salad with roasted pears and goat cheese, which sounds delicious. I give the bakery/kitchen 2.5-ish stars, at least for their breakfast offerings. There was a new person working without much oversight, and she didn't even know what the foods were - we asked for a 72-layer biscuit, which is probably one of those things they're known for, and she asked 'is it this one? is it this one?' - really. Before you let someone work with customers, they should at least be familiar with what they're selling. It gave us a less-than-professional vibe from the beginning (although she was very enthusiastic in her lack of knowledge). The biscuit was pretty boring, heavy, and ridiculously priced at $2.25. It may have been better if warmed, but that option wasn't given to us. The biscuit sandwich (different kind of biscuit) wasn't warmed properly, so the egg was still cold. The mocha had about 2" of unmixed chocolate syrup on the bottom. This confluence of not-good details was disappointing. The scone and coffeecake were rich and moist, though, and the flowers on the table were fresh and festive, so it had that going for it. But, for a place where you order at a counter and bus your own table, the prices were touristy and not worth it. read more

Really spectacular store. Every item you could possibly think of, and more. So many free samples. I loved that they had samples of soup. One station had about 20 different jam samples. Lots of things you won't see in a normal sized Stonewall store. Very crowded. Plenty of parking to be had but shoulder to shoulder at some of the displays inside the store. There's a cafe attached that had some interesting items but I didn't try anything. I thought perhaps the prices would be cheaper at this location but same prices. I picked up some jams that I hadn't seen elsewhere and even some interesting crackers so no complaints. I'd be in trouble if I lived closer to this store! read more

I grew up in York and the two guys that started this place used to sell out of a tiny store. It grew into a massive and amazing business. Even though they are a larger business now, you still get to sample all of their jams and the addition of a restaurant in the store is great as the food is top notch. read more

The actual place is pretty cool. Lots of jams and jellies to sample. Some unique ones that are very tasty (favorite is the Amaretto Peach-so good). The reason for the two stars is the actual food at the café and the cost. Ordered a roast beef sandwich and bottle of gourmet (I guess) root beer. The sandwich was lacking any real taste and they didn't use much RB. Mostly bread. The root beer was $3.75 a bottle. Seriously? for a soda? My friend and I had what I consider a pretty basic lunch and it came to $50. Way to much for a sandwich, salad, a couple bottles of RB, one order of onion rings and two blondie bars (very small for $2.75 each). Long story short...not impressed. Also, while I am at it...$7.95 before tax for a small jar of jelly is ridiculous. I love some of the flavors but just wont spend that much for a jelly. Maybe $4.95 will change my mind. I am sure the profit margin will still be decent and not greedy like I am sure it is at the $7.95 price. read more

Yum! I always thought of this as a place my mom likes to go to buy expensive jams and things like that, but wow the breakfast sandwich was good. We tried a regular bacon egg and cheese (Chili con quest for the cheese) with avocado and a a Siracha-maple breakfast sandwich. Our only was deciding which one we liked more. Such a lovely experience. We left our accommodations to head home a few Sunday's ago and decided this would be our first stop. The store is quite large with a well designed layout that organizes the items within categories. Be careful though, there are tons of samples and you probably will eat more than you think (I myself over indulged when trying the different marmalades, Blood Orange did it for me). Prices are a tad lower than other retailers so don't expect a large discount though. read more

Beware the Stonewall Kitchen "Bittersweet Chocolate Sauce" - It is not bittersweet!! It's mostly just "sweet" and doesn't taste all that chocolatey either. I should have read the label first! The first ingredient is corn syrup, the second is pure cane sugar, and the third is water. read more

Ate at their in-house restaurant. I had the roast beef sandwich on a gluten free roll. The beef was lean and tasty. The roll was horrible as it was dry, had no taste, and fell apart as I ate the sandwich. Ended up just eating the beef. I found them very expensive for a self-serve place and they tried to jam in too many tables so you can barely squeeze in and are right next to your neighbors. Other customers seem very rude, but that is not Stonewall's fault. read more

I was looking forward to eating in the Cafe knowing that the store has such great items and gifts. What a disappointment!!!! It's very inefficient and people bringing meals to customers have no idea where they're going - there's got to be a better way to do this. I ordered as part of a party of 3; my 2 guests got their meal 20 minutes (literally) before mine and were done eating by the time I got my meal (a BLT - how hard is that!). They explained that cold meals are made up 'quicker' than hot meal (I guess I wanted the bacon to be cooked) - so why not just wait until the BLT is nearly done to then have the other 2 cold sandwiches made! I also got my meal served (we were seated inside and it was not a 'to go' order) in a 'to go' carton while my 2 guests got their meals served on a plate! What a disaster the waitress was and couldn't have been more 'unfriendly' if she had tried. I tried to speak to someone in the kitchen, but she too told me that the policy is to make up the sandwiches in the order they come in even if it means that 2 meals get served before the 3rd one - what a place! She, too, was very unfriendly. And to top it off, I complained (ever so slightly) about my sweet potatoe fries being a little over-done (I think they must have left my mean stewing in the back since I asked 'when will it be ready' - well, to end a bad meal, the worst then happened --- I broke a tooth on the hard fries (I guess that's my fault as well) - they weren't that interested in hearing this! Maybe it was the crunchy bacon! Who knows, but my guests and I will NEVER go there again nor recommend it to anyone! An awful experience. My wife and I are long-time fans of Stonewall Kitchen. When living in Massachusetts, there was no trip to Ogunquit that didn't start with a stop in York to Stonewall Kitchen. Some of our favorites we recommend are: Curried Mango (great on chicken and salmon) and Vidalia Onion Fig. Mmmmmmh. But both have recently been upsurped by our new #1... Recently used it to glaze some Cornish hens...yummy! The best news too is we actually found it at Costco; not in the useful 11oz dressing jar but a much larger bottle very reasonably price. Stonewall teas & jams = SO GOOD. This place is cute with a country store flair and yes, TONS of free samples. You could probably make a free lunch out of it, if you are content with lots of little crackers, pretzel sticks, & jams galore.. just in case you aren't content with that there is a cafe that serves up lunch stuff & lots of bakery items too. I got blood orange marmalade on sale for only $2.50 and I am excited to try it, for such a great price you can't go wrong! I really like visiting here! As long as you don't watch the crowd eat over open sample jars, it's a painless... and enjoyable experience. Now that I know what I like, I usually avoid the free samples, just cause there's too many people dipping into those things... freaks me out. My #1 favorite is what I call my "crack jam"... It's real name is something like raspberry peach champagne or something long like that. Very Very delicious! On my latest visit, I ate lunch in the cafe and they had SUPER yummy sweet potato fries! CRISPY!!! yyyuuuuuummm... If you're in the area, I highly recommend a visit. And if you're not freaked out by germs, go hungry! read more

I love visiting Stonewall Kitchen in a certain order. First stroll into the cafe and get a bite to eat. It's usually quite good, not dazzlingly tasty, but solidly tasty. Then work off your meal by ambling through looking at jams and other home stuffs. My favorite is the fig ginger jam. read more
