I will stop the car so quickly, that I may potentially cause an accident, for the following...
1. Beautiful and/or historic cemeteries.
2. Abandoned insane asylums.
3. Extravagant candy stores.
4. Bizarre flea markets/yard sales.
5. Stores that specialize in prison inmate made products.
I do not get to satisfy #5 very often, but I did at Woods to Goods.
Not only is this stuff prison made, it's beautiful. Exquisite cutting boards (which I find so ironic), and wooden bowls that belong in West Elm, and that's just a taste! They also carry Prison Blues, jeans made by inmates in Oregon. The guys that were working there were very knowledgeable and friendly and allowed me plenty of time to browse.
I bought a birdhouse that looks like the old Maine State Prison ($15) and a few wooden switch-plate covers ($4). Oh, and a macrame bracelet (made by guards - the inmates taught them how).
Definitely drive out of your way to visit! When I am in Maine, I will be back! read more
