Buffalo Shimp
Gary Q.

Stonehenge Gardens was a favorite spot of ours when we lived in Hood River, but we have not made it back for a few years. Until today. The food is every bit as delicious as it was before. The meal started with complimentary focaccia bread with a thick vinaigrette, and then we had Buffalo Shrimp with bleu cheese. Both were excellent. They did the Buffalo sauce up proud. It was tangy, a little herbal, and not too spicy. Mind you, I like flaming hot food, but in this case it would have overwhelmed the flavor. We split an entree: The Blackened Scampi Sirloin. The steak was almost unbelievably tender for sirloin. The shrimp was divine, and covered in a light cream sauce. I couldn't have eaten it all but myself.

If the weather is gloomy it is cozy inside, we were on the patio on the first weekend that it was warm enough in April.

Hidden gem, up a dirt road on a bluff overlooking Hood River. Wedding venue and restaurant. Victorian private residence turned into a restaurant in the 1970s, still family run. I found the setting beautiful, the food excellent and the price reasonable.

The food was good overall. Salad was delicious, husband enjoyed good vegan dish and my pasta was filled with perfectly cooked salmon, white fish, and shrimp. We were stuffed but still wanted dessert so took the salted caramel cheesecake home. Would definitely recommend this spot for a nice meal. Drinks were great too!

Scampi. Delicious.

Delicious food, stellar service, garden setting - what's not to love? Thanks to the Yelpers for pointing me here! Celebrating a friend's special birthday - you know, the ones that end in a 5 or 0 - and I wanted it to be a memorable evening. Even though it happened to be a triple digit night, we had a wonderful time. The seating in the garden is so peaceful surrounded by lush tress and twinkling lights. magical. There is seating inside also and when dining there it feels like you are having dinner in someone's home, although a home from many decades ago. The history, the woodwork, fixtures and China is all from a bygone era. We started with cocktails, which were fab! And since we had already had happy hour over a charcuterie board at my house prior, we opted to just order entrees. My scampi was delicious! Perfectly cooked shrimp in a buttery garlic sauce over grains with fresh veggies. I had enough for lunch the next day. Service was too notch. Very attentive and unobtrusive. They have three seating times and when you call for a reservation, they give you a specific time during that period for you to arrive. This keeps a long line from forming and helps them get people to the socially distanced tables quickly and safely. Will be back for sure!

Ahi tuna app - just ok. Veggies subpar.

3 stars for the food, 5 for the service and romantic atmosphere. Perfect foe our anniversary! Flamed bread pudding so good!! Plenty of boozy syrupy sauce. They don't have ice cream though. Next time we will bring our own!! Dinner special of locally foraged mushrooms with spinach and creamy sauce very good. Duck with veggies not so great. Green beans tasteless (how in August?!!). Duck not great and the raspberry sauce was way too sweet. Both apps just ok (Ahi tuna and goat cheese). Veggies on both apps were subpar. Shawna Colada cocktail too sweet. House red blend good. Not the best menu for gluten sensitivities and vegetarian. Lots of staff working their tails off!

This was my first meal in Hood River and Stonehedge seemed - based on Yelp - to be the best fine dining experience in the city. With two preteen boys it seemed a little risky, particularly after calling ahead to see if they could make roasted potatoes or fries as a side for filet mignon (which both boys love) and were told no. Nevertheless we kept the reservation and I am aiming for fairness in describing the experience, as always. The restaurant is not easy to find. If you've not been before and are following gps directions it may seem to be in an industrial supply building just off I-84 but keep going to a dirt road turn-off into the woods. The setting is pretty, secluded, and mostly eliminates the road noise from the trucks on the highway. There are good Covid procedures in place, though they could improve by adding written instructions to customers at the entry. The menus are diner style, cheap laminate and clearly convey that the menu doesn't change often, if ever. There are no dishes for children, though they have spaghetti and meatballs as a standard entree and will make noodles with butter and olive oil. The wine list is pretty short but the selections are theoretically good and prices are reasonable. I say theoretically because I asked about their most expensive wine, a Silver Oak, and the waitress returned after a very long absence to tell me that it wasn't available because it "hadn't come in on the truck shipment." I have never heard that reason and can't imagine she (or anyone on staff last night) knew what they were talking about so just made something up. I'd asked what vintage the wine was because there are none printed on the menu. For a fine dining restaurant, the wine list, lack of inventory, and lack of knowledge are definitely minus one star. Without a decent red wine by the glass I ordered shrimp scampi for dinner, and a glass of their "house special" white wine, which I was told was "a white blend." This, after asking about all the other whites to try finding a crisp, steely wine and avoid something buttery and flabby. No sample offered and an obvious mistake on my part not to ask. Turns out their most expensive white wine by the glass is pretty bad, managing to combine a nearly perfect set of poor traits: sour but with weak acidity, no discernible fruit, and jug wine aroma. The shrimp scampi was entirely pedestrian, and the brussel sprouts hiding in the gloopy mess of sauce were nearly raw and hard. I would have considered the dish meh or slightly better at an Outback. My wife's seafood fettuccine was similar, and Outback sized. My younger son's filet mignon was cooked nearly perfectly medium rare and he loved it, and was very happy with the garlic smashed potatoes instead of roasted potatoes, so his dish was a real winner. The bread served to the table is, I believe, described as a house-made focaccia, but I certainly never encountered anything like it in Italy. Again, very suitable for an Outback, it is incredibly rich with garlic-butter and much more spongy than focaccia. Served with a blended oil/balsamic dip, it wasn't bad, but was once again suited for an Olive Garden or Outback. The boys wanted creme brûlée for dessert and shared one, which was size appropriate. My wife and I both got to try bites - it is large - and it tasted to me like a Jello pudding base. The boys liked it. The staff may be family - there was a decent resemblance- and a couple of them seemed like teenagers and not trained in fine dining expectations. Though nice, service was slow and inattentive. Overall this was a huge disappointment and I am confident I will never be back.

Upside down, inside out, right side up - any way you turn it, this wine is fantastic!!!…read more A friend who is a wine club member has been raving about their wine for years, and I finally stopped in for a tasting flight. Every single wine in the flight was good, which is rare. My absolute favorite was the Mourvèdre, a serious red with dark fruit and notes of spice. Complex, yet easily drinkable. Their Mourvèdre blend was also a standout. Upside down Wine is located right on Oak, the main street in Hood River and located right next to the clothing store, Parts and Labour. The name is very subtle over the door so if you aren't intending to go here, you most likely will walk right by. Don't! The very stark, modern interior, which feels a bit sterile, comes alive with warmth from the friendly service and the chatter and laughter of other patrons. You can stand along the long bar, European style, or sit at a high top for two or in comfy chairs in the back. Now that I've had the opportunity to visit the wineries in Hood River and the Gorge multiple times, previous faves no longer hold a candle to some of my new favorites. Could be that my palette has become more refined, who knows? I just know that my top 5 list contains none of my original choices and Upside Down wine is now in the list!

Not a friendly place for large groups…read more We were really the only group of people in there and I thought we'd get good service because of that. Our group came in two chunks and the host seemed annoyed by that. They pushed together another table and sat us together. It was kinda stuffy in the place so I opened up a window as it needed some fresh air. I was told it would possibly mess up the airflow of their kitchen? Some of us decided to split from the main group and sit out on the patio because of the stuffiness. The menu is for carnivores with a veggie burger and grill cheese for vegetarians but not really anything but chips and salsa for vegans. We also found out they only take 1 credit card and cash and no split bills. We were a large group of 14 people. It was a huge pain in the rear to figure out the mess. Honestly some of our party left and went elsewhere when they find that out. Not everyone had enough cash to cover them. When my burger came out they served it to the wrong person and we didn't figure it out for at least 10 minutes. So I got an already eaten plate. It was ok but they should be able to know who ordered what. Our waitress seemed annoyed by us and honestly not that friendly. My burger was overcooked and tasted like cardboard. There were no condiments like mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise on the table. We had to go get some. Just not a good experience here. I won't be back. I ordered my burger and fries and asked for it cooked medium.

I've never had a bad meal at this delicious restaurant! The service is always friendly too.read more

The seating room is cozy, and I loved the antique typewriters and little wine games on the tables. I was hoping there might be a view of the river given the building location, but apparently the balconies/roof are owned by a hotel in the same building. That said, this was a very cute and cozy spot to sit and taste. The woman pouring was very friendly and she knew a lot about the wines. The pours were pretty light but it's hard to complain when you're paying $15. None of the wines stood out to me, but I liked the Cab Franc best. Both red wines were served colder than I expected, which I didn't mind but I know some people really do. This honestly would have gotten five stars, but there were fruit flies everywhere! They were swarming us the whole time, and several got into our wine :( I think this is largely unavoidable because the entire front wall is open to air, but it did mean we were having to swat flies the whole time we were there.
