I am utterly confused as to why anyone who has actually worked with Brent would give him a 5 star review, but I see that almost every positive review is 4+ years old, so maybe something was different back then in how the company was run. Working with him has made me concerned about working with any contractors in the future as my fiance and I are pretty new to home ownership and updates. For one thing, Brent's communication is ATROCIOUS. Every single step of the way. You will always have to hunt him down if you discuss anything. Huge red flag. For another thing, he was COMPLETELY disrespectful of the budget we told him. He smiled and nodded and then proceeded to give us a plan 4-5 times what we asked for. Brent totally botched one corner of our yard, and did not have the competence to fix it, or willingness to look into it further or hire a subcontractor. He has just stopped communicating with us even though as of July 31st of this year he texted us that he would be coming over to look at it again. He does not take responsibility for any of this of course- it is the manufacturer's fault or our fault because our budget was so small (still tens of thousands of dollars) that he was barely willing to take a job like this and he let us know it. After we paid him, of course. His design work is nothing you should pay this kind of money for. We are looking into our rights and options now. I bought a 40 year old house in a nice area in desperate need of some landscape improvements. Not only did I have land I couldn't use, not only was I about to go bankrupt to the water company, I enjoyed a litany of additional first world problems. For example: - How can one enjoy an evening cocktail while listening to and looking at pool equipment? - How can one enjoy a cocktail while looking away from the pool equipment to a dirt hillside? Like literally just dirt, piled 10 feet high, about 5,000 square feet of it. - How can one enjoy gathering freshly squeezed orange juice, for cocktails, when the closest orange tree sits on a dollop of mud on top of a dilapidated retaining wall? - As implied, enjoying cocktails while selling off daughters to the water company is hard to do. - Walking around my property, after several cocktails, in pitch horror movie level blackness dampened my spirits at times. Stonebrook, ran by pros, undeniably likable people, got one good run at my diminishing savings and fixed my many serious problems. And, um, let me say it thusly: you get what you pay for. And top notch craftsmanship ain't cheap. But neither are good cocktails anyway. They did the following: - Removed some grass, put in flagstone and "DG" (for you newbs to landscaping, that means "decomposed granite". Lots of nice new xeriscape plants - Put a beautiful cedar fence around the gross pool equipment. - New side yard gate, also cedar, and much more secure than the previous iron fence. - A boulder based retaining wall in the front yard (looks natural) - A new retaining wall, hillside leveling and plantings - New DG filled stairs to the dirt hill, lined with plantings and new landscape lights - Refaced driveway posts that, finally, light up - And.. the big pile of dirt? It's not that bad, it has a massive pine tree on it and some boulders. Stonebook put in a wood deck, and it's AWESOME. Dude.. so many cocktails now. Oh, and finally, they also built and installed irrigated, redwood, planters filled with garden soil. Brent, the guy you'll likely be working with, he doesn't need much from you (just a pile of money). He's one of those people who is good at what they do. You give him the gist of what you want, and then does it 10 times better than you envisioned. read more

Brent and his team at Stonebrook landscapes are absolutely amazing. When it comes to hiring a design and build team, I cannot recommend them enough. The project they completed in my backyard was incredible. On time, on budget, and incredibly difficult to do. They even fit a pre-fab shipping container pool into the project, carefully navigating it between two homes and into the retaining wall they built. It was quite the event, and proved that there really is nothing this team can do! Brent and his team showed up every day they could work (outside of rain and then city permit delays) and I not once had to ever keep them on track, and never was concerned they wouldn't show up to finish the job. If you're looking for a landscaping company to go with, and are shopping around, I would say don't waste your time and just go with these guys. You won't be disappointed, and you won't be stressed. Brent was responsive to all my questions and handled all the processing of documentation and work with the City to get the permits we needed to finish the job. Juan and Brent designed and built a beautiful new landscape for our yard...on time and on budget. I highly recommend them. Our project included a completely new travertine patio, front and back, an outdoor barbecue island, a raised masonry/travertine firepit, new turf and upgraded irrigation system, upgraded shade structure, landscape lighting, and new planting in both front and back yards. Brent was creative and patient in the design process, always with a close eye on budget parameters, and never hesitating to make thoughtful revisions as requested. He was professional every step of the way, and even took time with us at the nursery to choose plants suiting our tastes and needs. We spoke to quite a few landscapers. Although Stonebrook required a design fee, it was well worth it. Once we got the designs and ideas that we could get, it was harder to go with another landscaper. They just didn't understand the aspects that we felt were captured with additions from Chris and Juan. I can't begin to explain how important it was for us that Juan was responsive throughout the entire process too. The quick response time was very critical for us, and Juan did a great job with timeliness and providing additional information for a better understanding of the process. The concept was incredible, and the finished design is even nicer! ;0) We can't believe it's completed and how great it looks too. We have had numerous compliments and absolutely love that it all came together so nicely. Juan helped make suggestions and improvements along the way too. Some changes decreased the original price design and allowed us to have more flexibility and pricing for additional plans that were originally going to be phased out. Along with that, we were pleased with the efficiency of the project progress and completion. Our neighbors were impressed how quickly it was done as well. Not that Stonebrook needs another 5 star review, but here is mine. Thanks again guys, nice work! We've been remodeling our house and yard for the past 1.5 years and have worked with MANY contractors. Stonebrook is among the very best and we will likely use them again for our front yard (and there are plenty of contractors we certainty will NOT use again!). The only negatives I had with Stonebrook is: (a) they are very busy and couldn't start our project for many months, and (b) the pool contractor they recommended turned out to be not so great and very difficult to work with. But having said that, the yard looks better than we expected, price was fair, they showed up every day, made fast progress on our project and actually finished early, have nice attention to detail, and Juan has a really great sense for design. The initial design proposals we received were pretty basic without much detail, but just trust the other 50+ 5-star reviews that Juan has his own vision and just let him do his work. He has a great sense for layout, plants, trees, and it turned out nice for us - I can't wait to see it fully grown in. read more

We were really enthusiastic about working with Stonebrook based on all the 5-star reviews, but something has changed dramatically with this business. We were very disappointed with Stonebrook landscapes. Brent's communication was terrible: he didn't return phone calls, he didn't respond to emails. We'd have to track him down and repeatedly badger him to get any kind of a status update. The quality of his design work was also unsatisfactory. He gave us very rudimentary sketches and a low quality computer rendering that showed very little detail. All in all, it looked like he spent about 2 hours on the project and called the drawings "final". He always had some excuse, Verizon is deleting my voice mails, I missed your emails, some of my staff left, my dog at your drawings. Ok, maybe not the last one, but it was always something. After we realized we'd never get the quality of work we paid for, we asked for a refund. Brent, who claims to be the owner, said "management" could only authorize a partial refund. He couldn't even take responsibility for his own decisions. In the end we paid $1500 for poor quality drawings, design that wasn't up to snuff, and ducked phone calls. In the past, different individuals were responsible for providing Stonebrook's 5-star quality. Brent and the crew now operating Stonebrook did not provide anything near this level of quality or customer service. read more

Juan worked with us throughout the whole process, asking what we wanted, and helping us pick out solutions that worked for our tastes and our budget. The wife and I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. The crew that came out and did the work was clean, courteous, and did what they said they were going to do in the time they said they were going to do it. They went above and beyond to help us with the little details that we didn't think about, and never change-ordered us or hit us with additional fees. They were able to accomplish all three of our projects for what another vendor wanted to charge us for just the outdoor kitchen. I was hoping I could write a glowing review, but unfortunately I can't. We hired them to put a fence up for us as our neighbors were using them to do the same. Mistake after mistake (gates put on backwards, twice), missed timeline after missed timeline and very poor communication (made the decision to make gate opening smaller without discussing with us). Was told it would start on a Wednesday and didn't start until the following week. Was told it would be up by that Friday as we had dogs and it was not. Was told a temp fence would be put up for the weekend and it was not. A week after the Friday timeline and they still are working on it. The owner talking bad about us to the workers and our neighbors for complaining and when confronted denying it until we pointed the the camera and repeated exactly what was said. Then she apologized for talking about us. If you are going to use them just be sure to get every thing in writing and don't be shocked when you are told take down on Wed and put new one up on Friday turns into two weeks later and still working on it. read more

I met with four different friend-recommended patio designers/contractors and with only the 5-star Yelp intro to Stonebrook, they won the job, hands down. We completely redid our front and back yards to take advantage of our great views. Juan and Chris not only impressed my wife and me with there straightforward and friendly approach, but also their professionalism and total dedication to our satisfaction - The job involved 10s of thousands of dollars and from beginning to end, Stonebrook kept all promises they made, went the extra mile, and we couldn't be happier with our result. Painless!! In fact, Juan's entire team (sometimes there were 6-8 employees at our home) were ALWAYS helpful, courteous and professional. We did a firepit, bbq area, extensive cement walkways, all new plants, grass, drip systems and a very nice water feature. We also did new designer wood fencing, some gates and lighting. We chose a few landscapers to get bids from (all of which were very close in price) but immediately felt comfortable with Juan and Brooks. They listened to our wants, asked questions and gave their professional input and insight. Every day the team arrived to our home on time, worked hard and were very professional. The end of every day they cleaned up completely. Juan and/or Brooks showed up to our home every day to check progress and make sure we did not have any questions and were happy. There is not enough good I can say about Juan Dorta-Duque and Stonebrook Landscapes. He one of the most creative, honest, trustworthy persons I've ever worked with and one of the most creative, honest, trustworthy contractor in existence, as far as I'm concerned. After buying a money pit of a house, and being completely ripped off by every freaking kind of contractor known to humankind, we were truly blessed to have had Juan come into our lives when we were faced with having to rip up the yard and all the concrete on the property because it was flooding the house. He is truly and genuinely a good person who is at the top of his field, is a master of his craft, yet has not lost sight of humanity in a blur of dollar signs. Working with Juan, I felt that he truly *cared* about me as a person, not just as another paycheck. He listened to what I wanted, was not afraid to give me his opinion when what I *thought* I wanted would have probably looked like crap, and he went above and beyond anything and everything I could have asked for in helping me .. us .. at one of the darkest times in our lives. Beyond that, he's just so darn good at what he does. He is so creative without going overboard. Most landscape designs I see are just, 'how many plants can we stick in here." They either look cluttered or manufactured, like every other design you see. Juan, otoh, has a unique ability to make the landscape *feel* right. I don't know if he thinks of Feng Shui when he does it, but it feels that way because it's inviting and comfortable rather than rigid and staid. IOW, he has an "eye." He *knows* what is going to work and it seems like he does it so naturally when he's doing the work, and his work ends up looking natural and organic because of it. I'd like to begin by patting myself on the back: In a sea of mediocre and sometimes unscrupulous landscapers, somehow I (ok wifey, WE) made the very wise choice to work with Juan and Stonebrook Landscapes. Way to go, me (I mean US). :) Prior to this incredibly intelligent and/or lucky decision, we met with a number of landscaping companies and had multiple plans drawn. Juan definitely conceptualized the superior design at a competitive price (note that "competitive" doesn't mean "cheapest", as Stonebrook insists on quality materials and expert craftsmanship). All that is fine and good, but what it really came down to was Juan himself. We simply felt good about him as a person and as a professional. We were right on the money. What we are left with is exactly what we wanted: not just a patio or a yard, but a really special part of our home that we will enjoy with family and friends for years to come. There were so many good things about our experience with Stonebrook--here are just some of the highlights: -Juan's crew was professional, respectful, and friendly. We almost missed having them around when the job was done. -They showed up on time and worked very hard every day without exception for the duration of the project. -As others have pointed out, they cleaned up the work site at the conclusion of each day. Many other landscaping projects were going on in our neighborhood, and the vast majority of them looked like a war zone until the job was finished (and sometimes even afterward). We first met Juan from Stonebrook Landscapes at the spring Home and Garden Show. We planned to replace our fence with something non traditional, walked by his booth and were captivated. There was the succulent wall I had wanted and a beautiful ipe and stainless steel fence. Juan gave us a reasonable bid and completed the job today. The fence is a piece of art, our new cedar deck and stairway are showpieces. All the irrigation works well and the succulent wall will stand up well to time because of it's sturdy construction. The crew is pleasant and I can't emphasize this enough - tidy! The yard was always washed clean and tools were put away when they finished for the day. Most importantly they are craftsmen! Their work is meticulously detailed and beautiful. I wholeheartedly recommend these guys. We have worked with contractors many times over our lives and have never had this kind of positive experience. We will use them again for the next project! read more

We found Stonebrook Landscapes after they completed our neighbor's project. Our neighbor raved about them (how often do people rave about contractors?) and their end result was amazing. We went forward with them and our results were incredible as well. Juan, Brent, and the entire crew (Enrique, Cholo, Jesus, and Jose...apologies if I forgot anyone else who contributed) were all fantastic to work with. Our project started with a design phase - Juan and Brent took our comments and wishes and created 2 designs. We sat down and reviewed, gave comments and got to pick and choose the features that we liked, and settled on a final design. We asked for a modern lounge type feel - somewhere we could spend evenings instead of a hip bar. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! I've attached pictures of our backyard, including a before photo so people can see how incredible the transformation was. Here are my overall comments on Stonebrook: 1. Great Communication - Juan and Brent were available via text and phone any time we had a question. 2. On-Time, Clean Site - the crew arrived every day at the same time, made legitimate noticeable progress every day, and left kept the site clean at all times. I never had questions about the progress being made - it was visually evident. Also, we had the same crew every day (no random dudes wandering around our house). 3. Attention to Detail - all these guys do are Landscapes and it shows in their work. Every plant in our yard has its own low-flow drip line. We installed two posts to hang a sail shade, and one post is painted to match my fence, the other is painted to match the brown wood chip mulch so both blend in. I know it's a minor detail, but it's the little things like that which add to the overall look and feel of the project. 4. Full Service - my wife and I are both accountants by trade and we do not have a creative bone between us. We needed A LOT of help. When we asked Juan and Brent for their professional advice or to "just take care of it", they did. When we gave input, they listened. I never felt the need to step in and micromanage the project. I had full confidence in the team every step of the way. Our project finished on time in accordance with the original timeline and on budget (there was no scope creep except for changes that we asked for). I am sooo happy we chose Stonebrook Landscapes for our project. Like a previous reviewer, I was also referred to Stonebrook from KRC Rock in San Marcos. We purchased a new home in San Elijo Hills with a relatively large yard that was a blank slate. We had a general plan in mind, which we expressed to Juan (owner of Stonebrook) at our first meeting. He quickly got back to us with a general sketch and cost estimate, which was very reasonable compared to the other quotes we had received. We decided to move forward and gave him a small deposit for a formal drawing to submit to the HOA for approval. Everything from then on went as planned with the final product more amazing than we could have imagined! Juan discussed with us slight tweaks to our design along the way based on his experience, all of which we now very much appreciate. Payments were requested on a reasonable schedule as work progressed and the job was completed on time. We had a few change orders during the process (added some ledge stone, slightly larger patio, etc), all of which were at a reasonable cost. Don't really feel the need to repeat everything that others have already talked about. This is a top notch business, from Juan down to his design/admin crew to his skilled contractor crew. Added bonus points for their unique modern/contemporary designs! Prices were pretty much in line with other companies we talked to. What set them apart though, was the great customer service, low pressure approach, and friendly attitude. Overall a Great Experience. I am not one to go online and complain nor write reviews but this time it is well deserved. I worked with these guys from Stonebrook Landscaping and I was impressed with their attention to detail, clean work ethic and customer service. I wanted something new but I was not sure about just what is was. When I hired Stonebrook I was introduced to Chris, their designer guy. This is a long overdue review for Juan and Stonebrook Landscapes.They completed our backyard landscaping this past October-November. A big THANK YOU goes out to Juan and his team! First of all, the process is fast! After the final design review, Juan and his team completed our entire backyard and side entrance in 2.5 - 3 weeks. Most other landscape companies gave a 6 week estimate. Juan even repainted my retaining wall at no additional cost at his own suggestion, since the color I chose was slightly less than pleasing to the eye. We're glad and thankful that Juan chose the plants when my wife and I could not agree; We now have a clean and modern look to the backyard that is picturesque :) NOTE to homeowners getting future landscaping: Plants make a HUGE difference. His company is one of integrity and ultimate customer service. He went above and beyond to give us the "modern" backyard that we envisioned. We found Stonebrook Landscapes through Yelp and we are so glad that we did! Despite our project being a small job for their team, Juan and Chris came out to our house twice to talk with us before moving forward with a contract. This was the same week they were busy with the Home and Garden show and the same week that one of their team members passed away. They still made time for us and listened to all of our input and questions. Juan and Chris both made specific suggestions that we had not thought of and were sure to give us choices that helped us stay within budget. They did not try to up-sell anything, and in fact, made sure to reuse some stones, lighting fixtures, and irrigation components that we already had that were in working condition. Once the project started, their guys were on site every morning when Juan said they would be there. They worked hard all day and thoroughly cleaned our yard each day before they left. During the project, Juan physically checked the site each day. Juan also met with me at the nursery to help me choose plants for our yard and he was available by phone, text, and email and always responded to emails or texts within the hour. Our project was done the day before Juan said it would be done and it came to within $2 of the original estimate/contract. Wow! We discovered Stonebrook Landscapes at the San Diego Lawn & Garden Show in March, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds; and were very impressed with their work. We subsequently researched the company on Yelp, and were very pleased with the reviews. You can now add us to their growing list of happy and satisfied customers. Once we settled on a budget and design, including: stamped concrete, artificial turf, decomposed granite (not recommended, unless you're okay tracking loose gravel everywhere), mow strips, boulders, trees, plants, a fire pit, waterfall, and patio cover, we were ready to begin. Our backyard landscaping project began on June 1st, and was completed on time, on budget, as promised, on June 19th. Juan (Owner) and his crew, are true professionals - friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. At the end of each work day, his crew cleans up the work site immaculately. We found Stonebrook on Yelp and after interviewing several landscapers it was clear that I would enjoy working with Juan over the others. This was our first time ever owning and landscaping a backyard and we had no idea what to expect, include, where to start, etc. Working with Juan and Chris made the whole process very easy and the end result was a beautiful, clean design. They were very conscious of our limited budget and designed the yard with our budget in mind - while at the same time including all of the elements that we wanted. And because I have no idea how to maintain an irrigation system or keep plants alive, Juan came back several times after the project was done to walk us through the maintenance of the yard. If you are looking for a great landscaping crew these guys are top notch. Juan and Brooks turned our overgrown backyard into a masterpiece in three days and were great to work with along the way.
