A cozy Japanese-style bar with great drinks and delicious food. The bartender was super nice and took the time to thoughtfully explain the drinks and make recommendations for us. Great atmosphere, great service, and a really enjoyable experience!

New York's cocktail scene is so stacked that bars need to do more than just serve good drinks to grab your attention. Stone & Soil's flowery marketing copy describing themselves as a bar "rooted in precision and Omotenashi" reeled me in, and I'm not mad at it. While I think touting precision is like saying you make good drinks, cause, duh, I hope you are focused on precision! But I walked out skipping. This space has seen a lot of turnover since beloved O Ya left, but I hope Stone & Soil has more staying power. The redesign wasn't anything noteworthy but they have an understated and luxe look and feel. I lucked into a walk-in table on a Saturday night around 10pm, which was a nice win. I got both the S&S Espresso martini and Pacific Triangle. The latter had matcha milk, pandan, lime, kiwi, sake, and mezcal. It was clarified to be crystal clear but it still tasted kind of rich, which was trippy. I liked the matcha dusted salt rim a lot, which paired well with the sake's rice-y notes. I had been drinking before I got here so had to tap out after 2, but I can't wait back to try some of their tomato cocktails. I see this spot as an alternative to Sip & Guzzle, at least drinks-wise. They have a lot of tomato-based cocktails that are having a moment.

As is often the case as of late, I found Stone & Soil on The Infatuation's recently opened list. It bills itself as a cocktail bar taking inspiration from Japanese décor, mixology, and service. Based upon a first visit on an unseasonably warm late Winter Tuesday evening, I say it has potential. If you're planning a visit, know that the food is an accompaniment to the lengthy list of fancy cocktails. I started with the yuzu dashi marinated green olives, followed by the Caesar salad, then finally the scallop curry--all appetizer sized, and all delicious in their own right. A Japandi (Japanese and Scandinavian) aesthetic is visible in the space with its stone sculptures, clay wall finishes, and fluted wood ceiling, housed in a minimalistic rectangular space anchored by a long wooden bar. While the lighting is layered, warmth and intimacy still seem absent. No doubt tweaks will be made as the bar finds its clientele and the neighborhood finds the bar. I'll likely return when in the Rose Hill/Nomad neighborhood and in the mood for sophisticated libations.

It was my first time there but I was expecting the menu I saw online, not this new one. We tried 2 drinks: one inspired by Turkish figs and one inspired by lemons and the "Miracle Berry", which inverts your palate and turns sour into sweet! I really enjoyed both drinks. The figs one came with a sweet fig granola bite and the lemon one really did taste sweet after eating the "Miracle Berry"! I'd definitely come back to try their many other drinks.

I liked how they organized the menu by country/geography to facilitate an understanding of the flavor profiles. I got two of the date & fig-flavored smoked whisky drinks and it was a well made, balanced, and very good. Not cheap at some $25 or something, but middle of Manhattan with some creative ingredients means I guess it is what it is. Servers seemed a bit annoyed to have to deal with us shortly before close as I think they were hoping to usher people out and close down maybe a little early. One the one hand I get it, on the other hand you've got two paying customers on a slow night.

Patent Pending is has such cool speakeasy vibes, think dimmed lighting and candles at each table in a very intimate space. Our plan was to get wine and a cheese board however, the kitchen was closed due to a family emergency. We could only order chips or bar nuts with our drinks. Disappointing but what can you do? We ordered both the chips and bar nuts to go along with our drinks. And instead of wine, I opted for a cocktail! They have a pretty extensive cocktail menu with all these crazy concoctions. I went for the Strange Magic which was citrusy and refreshing. I'll definitely be back to visit again and hopefully next time will get the cheese board :)

It was dark when we entered the coffee shop but an ajar door gave way to the bar. The decor is a homage to the works of Nikola Tesla, which can be seen in the subtle electric theme throughout the space and the naming of the cocktails. The space isn't too large - the bar and stools take up most of the space but they also have some booths/tables. The place looks great. The cocktail menu is very creative - I got one of their seasonal mixes that was actually two drinks in one. The main cocktail was meant to be sipped first and they provided a small glass of beer to be sipped after. The name escapes me but it was very good. Since we had cocktails at dinner, we only stayed for one round. Service was good, and overall I enjoyed my time at Patent Pending. I would definitely return to explore more of their menu.

As I walked in and saw just how swanky this place is I panicked - there was no way we could just walk in here without a reservation, right? But the hostess was, thankfully, so down to earth. I was straight up like hey I totally messed up and thought we could just walk in here, she was like you know what, let me see what we have. Lo and behold, she did have a table for us - as long as we were out in an hour and a half, which was just the right amount of time. Stepping into this place feels like you're in some secret, super special cocktail club. Decor is super high end, vibes are upscale AF. The cocktail menu is incredible -- and incredibly pricey, but truly worth it. I ordered the Valentino which was strong and sweet, really well made. They gave out a complimentary nut mix that was also delicious. Service was swift and gracious. If you're looking for a spot to impress a date, this is it.

There's also seating on the second floor, perfect for couples or small groups. I tried two of their cocktails when I went. The first was the Eastern Julep, a delicious twist on a classic. The mint Moroccan tea gave the drink a cool, refreshing taste on every sip. I also tried the Silver Screen, the closest drink I could find to an old fashioned. It was interesting, there was definitely a hint of a buttery taste. Overall a really balanced bourbon drink. I walked in and found room at the standing tables. A bar seat eventually opened up but I was already on my second drink by then. Definitely make reservations if you're planning a visit!

The well-crafted cocktails present thoughtful riffs on the classics, inventive without being showy. While the dim lighting and intimate atmosphere practically beg for a secret rendezvous (there's an ostrich involved), I met up with a friend for the decidedly unscandalous purpose of doing our intention setting for the year over libations and nibbles. I opted for a pastel sour while my companion asked for a drink called The Last Word - it was no longer on the menu but they obligingly made it for us anyway. The menu consists of mostly small plates and is seafood forward, but we shared a petite dish of steak frites, tender and cooked perfectly medium rare. Our server was very sweet but service was slow on the night, and by the time we received our utensils the food was cold. However we were not rushed and were able to linger a bit to finish our conversation. For those who savor finely concocted cocktails paired with fresh raw bar offerings in a salon-like setting, this is the spot for you.
