This historic railroad station, built in the English Gothic Revivalist style, of blue dolomite stone, was consteucted in 1893. As part of a village beautification project, it replaced a previous wood structure.
These lines were used by the New York, New Haven & Hartford RR until the early 60's. In 1997 the station was purchased and restored by the High Meadow Foundation. Between 2003 - 2011 the station was used by the Berkshire Scenic railway museum as it's southern terminus for tourist train excursions.
Since 2013 the Berkshire Scenic Railway museum has leased the property with plans to create a railway exhibit, reinstate scenic railway tours and offer the space for special events. During our visit those plans had not yet come to fruition.
The property is well maintained and it is a lovely, historic building. For those familiar with the song and movie "Alice's Restaurant" by Arlo Guthrie, this railway station is one of the film locations. And of course Alice's restaurant is 'just a half a mile from the railroad track' in Stockbridge.
A nice little side quest to add to your Birkshire itinerary. Keep an eye on the Birkshire Scenic railway museum website for updates on the future of this site. At the time of this review, a woolen yarn company inhabits the space.
