If I was a poor beggar starving for scrap of food, I would come back to this Nicaraguan bakery often just for that price! But maybe I was charged on the cheap because it was late in the afternoon and the woman behind the counter felt sorry that I had to order something that wasn't made fresh (I, like anyone else, should know to order things from the bakery in the morning)! Nevertheless, the croquetas were good and the coffee good. The tequeno had too much dough which can be ruinous since the magic of the tequeno is really on the cheese, not the dough (which should be the second most important thing after the cheese) or the guava. The sweetened pastelitos with ground beef and the coffee were good. Despite all that, I don't think I would come back for these things. This place seems to be more known for its cakes more than the sweets, pastelitos and bocaditos they have here. This bakery seems to be popular with the Nicaraguans in the neighborhood - I was here during an off hour and there was constantly somebody coming in or out, but that may have been because the daycare next door had just let their kids out for the day. It's not just me who is crazy about it either, there are never any leftovers (a shame really) because it's just that delicious. They also make what are thought to be these odd little pastelitos de carne (beef), pollo (chicken), or piña (pineapple), which have a semi-hard empanada like exterior with a semi-crunchy edge (not flaky) and they are covered with grains of sugar, each about the size of a dumpling. Sugar and beef on chicken? That's crazy! Yea, well, try it. It's a Nica bakery thru and thru serving up picos, bolillos, quesillos, crema, cuajadas, Pio V, cacao, & cebada; but they also serve up a pretty good blend of cuban coffee, pastelitos de guava y queso, croquettas, tequeños and even colombian pan de bono. Come for the cakes but don't shy away from the snacks and the authentic Nica items, all freshly baked, cured, or handmade daily. Oh yea, did I mention they make a tres leche that makes even lactose intolerants wish they could eat it simply from the expressions others make? When I arrived, I was told the register was already closed and they could not accept credit cards. Fortunately, I had a $100 bill with me, but they refused to accept that as well. I had to walk around the plaza trying to find someone to break the bill. After finally getting change, I returned at 5:01 PM -- only to find the door locked. What made the situation even worse was seeing the employee sitting in her car watching me, then driving away as she waited to give me a bad look. It felt incredibly disrespectful, rude, and completely unprofessional. I've honestly seen better customer service at a gas station. The lack of basic courtesy and common sense from the staff was unbelievable. Locking the doors while a customer is actively trying to break the bill is just unacceptable behavior. It's clear this employee does not care about customers or the reputation of the business. Management should seriously reconsider who they trust to represent their company because this kind of attitude drives loyal customers away. I've been a loyal customer for years, buying birthday cakes for both my family and our office celebrations, but after this experience, I will not be returning. Unfortunately, this was not my first negative interaction with the same employee. After multiple bad experiences, I can confidently say the problem is the staff.
