When I had trouble figuring out her website, the owner worked with me, and when I took a class wanting to do something very specific (make a traditional wired-brim hat that duplicated the look of one from a film), she helped me with that too even though it was slightly different from what the class was about (making an artistic felt hat). This is the only place in the suburbs that I know of which does any kind of millinery classes (felt hats from wool roving), and I'm grateful it's available. The owner's primary focus is the fabric arts (felting; weaving; dyeing) but also offer some bead and jewelry classes; the class I just took was a jewelry-making class in silver, copper, brass and even bronze taught by another artist. We all walked out with a generous handful of pieces we'd made and it was a lot of fun. I feel lucky to have access to such a variety of classes without having to drive in to Chicago, and the Berwyn studio is also fairly convenient. You might be taking a class all by yourself or with some other people; she has huge quantities of supplies, is patient guiding students, and you'll leave with something cool you made yourself. (She also sells tools and some of her / others' art. Some open studio available.) Limited parking in the back; some street parking. Studio might be a bit cold in the winter; consider a sweater or hoodie.

They have good quality fabrics and especially good quality thread. They repair sewing machines, so when the old 1960s Kenmore machine I bought needed a cleaning and adjustment I brought it in. It was returned cleaned, oiled and with a new correct needle. I also purchased a set of needles for different things. I mostly just mend clothing, but I have a periodic older visitor who uses the machine for her quilting projects, so I wanted it to be in top shape. In addition they sell very high quality machines that are borderline commercial systems you can program to do all kinds of fancy projects. Service here is very friendly. They also have classes!

But today I took an actual class on machine embroidery and had a blast. I learned so much and learned how to do things correctly. Being self taught isn't always the best. My intention was to save up more money for a sewing only Babylock machine. But they had a trade in embroidery and sewing machine for the exact same price as the new machine. After some testing of the machine and negotiations with the husband the Adventura II came home with me. For the class I used a Babylock Aria that had ALL the bells and whistles. I called for a quote to have several thousand dollars in items framed. I asked about a Prisma frame…read morethat I wanted to use on the pieces. First, the woman sounded put out that I just asked for quote and didn't guarantee she would be my choice for framing. That would be based on best possible price for the money I am going to spend. And, second, told me she would have to have the Prisma company give her a quote because they are handmade frames - her answer ... "ummm, I don't..." that was enough. If you are put out by providing the services you are listed to provide : "FRAMING", then maybe you should be in business. You just lost over $5,000 in framing.
