Full disclosure: I'm writing this not based on any services provided by the guys at Stillwell. I am, however, writing this based on a call I had with Mike a few days ago. I needed an inspection on a car I was looking at buying. Everyone I called in the Matawan area came off as brash, with little time for me or my call about needing service from them. That's when I dialed up Stillwell. Mike answered, and took probably ten minutes from his day to talk with me about inspections and the like. I needed someone to come to the place where the car was, and, unfortunately, Mike said they weren't able to do that. He was willing to slot me in during the next business day for a quick inspection on the pretenses that he'd rather do it where he had more time to be very thorough. Unfortunately, my timetable didn't allow me the luxury of waiting a couple of days to get it done, but if I was able, I'd have taken it to Stillwell without hesitation. The best part: Despite not scheduling anything with them, he still took the time to help me locate someone who would come out and do the inspection. If that's not the definition of good customer service, I don't know what is. read more

Recently, knowing that I would be bringing my car in for scheduled maintenance, I checked the tire tread depths on my car and verified that they were in good shape. I had already decided, in advance, that I would replace my tires at 4/32 of an inch, to maintain optimal traction and safety. And my tire tread depth checks indicated to me that my tires were fine. A week after checking the tire tread depths, I brought my car in to Stillwell Garage, for an oil change and tire rotation. While waiting for it to complete, I got a call from Mike, at Stillwell. He indicated that my tires needed to be replaced. To which, I replied that I had already checked the tire tread depths. He reiterated that my tires needed to be replaced. I told him to just rotate the tires. A day after I got my car out of the shop, I checked the tread depths and discovered that my tires did indeed to be replaced. To my shock, the tire tread depths seemed to be hovering at around 2/32 of an inch, which was way beyond what I would have ever allowed, for reasons of safety, considering that I had intended to replace them at 4/32 of an inch. I immediately made an appointment, for the following day, to have new tires installed, but at a different shop. At that point, I did not feel safe driving around on those tires. Trying to reconstruct what had just happened, I contacted the previous owner of my car, who has been a close friend for many years. He confirmed my recollection that the tires should have been good for another 6000 miles. So his assessment correlated fairly well with the tire tread depth measurements that I had initially taken. (BTW, I've actually seen him install new tires on his car all by himself, so he's fairly savvy when it comes to cars.) At this point, I'm in a bit of disbelief. I had been using Stillwell Garage for the past 3-4 years.. I leave you, the reader, to draw your own conclusions. read more

I had an emergency where I needed the car fixed ASAP so I google local mechanics. Picked this shop at random and went with it. It had 11 good reviewers so I figured it must be good. As I walked In I was warmly greeted and serviced within minutes. Both guys at the office were friendly and polite. The car was fixed in 2 days and it now works fine. When I talked to a mechanic friend about what was fixed I was shocked to discover that I was charged $275 for part that cost $75-$98 dollars tops. The bill was $515 with tax. Parts were listed as $275 and labor $198. Truly I don't mind paying a markup especially if you do a good job but 300% that's a bit over the top. Hence this review. Don't make my mistake and compare prices before you commit. read more

The quotes are always fair and they always go out of their way to find the least expensive but safest and thorough solution to any problem. My car broke down on the Garden State Pkwy near Matawan. It was the middle of the night and I needed a tow to take me to a garage nearby. I did a quick search on Yelp and found Stillwell's. I'm very happy I did, car repair shops are hit and miss with a combination of characters you might want o deal with or never deal with. Stillwell's falls in the category of one you want to deal with. They were quick in diagnosing the problem and gave me a straightforward quote that was the same the day I picked up my car. It took a business day longer but the owner didn't let the car leave the shop till he was satisfied, that included repairing a headlight on the spot when I came to pick it up even tho he didn't charge me for it. My car a Saab, which is hard to find good service for these days, is running great. They did exactly what they say they would do, didn't try to get more out of me like some car shops and were pleasant throughout the experience. If you want an honest, competent auto repair shop in Matawan/Bayshore area of NJ you can't go wrong with Stillwell's, they do what they say they are going to do, know what they are good at, and that is what you want in these kinds of situations. I had some repairs to be done on my 2003 Civic and had work list and cost estimate from the dealer. I did comparison shopping with two other garages. I checked Yelp and found Stillwell Garage with high ratings and testimonials. Checked the website and few more testimonials there. Still skeptical I called Mike. Very professional and pleasant to talk to. I faxed him the work items - Engine and Transmission Oil Change, Cabin Filter Replacement, AC Compressor and Relay (OEM), Left and Right Compliance Bushings replacement, Spark Plugs, Engine Tune-up, Four new tires (60K warranty) , Wheel alignment, Bumper replacement etc. Called after a day and he gave the cost on the phone ( I had excel of estimates from dealers and others). Mike's cost was $1,020 cheaper than the Dealer and other garages. I was skeptical but decided to try anyway. I was pleasantly surprised by timeliness and the quality of work. The car purrs like a new car though it is 13 years old and cost me $1,020 less. I will recommend anyone (have already referred several friends) to talk to Mike and get an estimate and workmanship to your satisfaction and beyond.
