I think this place was solid - and similar to Lucky AF, has some really creative rolls to try. That said, it was a bit pricier than I would have liked - luckily we had a gift card to make it a bit more accessible. The Snap Crackle Pop roll was super unique and we loved it - Fantabulous Roll had a nice hearty serving of fish with each bite, and how delicious it was to have a combo fish and crab meat roll since I typically feel pressured to choose one or the other. The service was really great, Tyler was the only one taking care of multiple tables but he did a wonderful job and making sure we got everything we wanted and needed. As far as the food, Sticky Rice used to be one of my top favorite places a few years back but when I went this time, I was very disappointed with everything except the Sticky balls. My partner and I finally visited Sticky Rice after trying their food at the Veggie Fest and it was SO GOOD - the menu offered a vegan bowl and plenty of vegan sushi rolls, so we got a mix of the Dirty Vegan bowl, Veganzilla Roll, and Kappa Maki roll. It was absolutely delicious, all flavor profiles were amazing. Until now, we've been making our own vegan sushi rolls and bowls since we couldn't find a restaurant that beat our own cooking... but now we've been happily outperformed :) The ambience was also very fun - it's pretty crowded on a Saturday night and some of the tables are packed in tightly together, but lighting and vibe was great. My opinions straight up for what it ever it's worth are positive - reviewing it on its own merits. Here is what this place is and what it's not. Do not expect elevated Jiro-would-be-proud, omakase and artful presentations type of sushi. This is a typical Richmond Fan restaurant, kinda gritty, kinda loud, using an old building in a fun way, but serving good food, not a chain. Now, in addition to sushi, they do have some unexpected items on the menu, such as tater tots. But... ok. quirky is fine and fun. Again, they are not going for a James Beard. As for the quality of the sushi itself, I've had sour and old-tasting tuna and other items at certain other places here in town repeatedly (shall remain nameless) that people seem to live and die over how amazing the places are. Here, while it may not be genius presentation and they clearly haven't dropped insane amounts of money on decor, the food is consistently fresh. One thing I also love here that none of the biggies are doing is a salmon skin roll. Oh that delightful crunchiness! Used to love salmon skin hand rolls when I lived in California and any thing salmon skin is so hard to find. Next, the service. Was there last night, and server Gabby was so attentive with our large party. Even when a not-insignificant incident occurred due to broken glass (ugh this is a restaurant's worst nightmare and the staff handled it quickly and politely). Further, I have a food allergy and she was very careful to ensure my items were placed on a separate plate and alerted the kitchen. What more could you ask for. Again, this is not "white glove, sommelier reading wine list" type restaurant - evaluation is for what it is, and I give 5/5 for the service. I only mention the drinks in passing because they have all the usual suspects - few beers on tap, offerings of various beers in bottles and cans, some cider, and also a bar. You'll be able to enjoy a drink with your meal and these too were brought quickly. Lastly, value. All in all, the prices are very reasonable. If you are in the Fan, pop in one evening for a fun night of solid sushi, tater tots, and experience a little bit of Richmond. read more

This past time I tried a tots basket appetizer, ordered a sushi roll for myself and sampled my friend's sticky balls. (yes, I just said that...) I think sticky rice is a great date night spot. It's hip, the crowd is cool, sometimes there's karaoke. I was there on Groundhog Day and they were playing the movie in the bar. I really enjoyed our server although I did not catch their name. (It can be a little noisy in there!) they didn't seem to mind when my date and I took some time to go over the menu before deciding on our options. Also, their fashion sense was GREAT! Overall, I think the food at sticky rice is good but probably not the primary driver of what gets me into the establishment. You don't come here for the ambience, but rather you come before the grungy & fun vibes: it's definitely a hole in the wall, but that's where it gets its charm. The menu features, Asian cuisine and sushi, and there really is something for everyone. I appreciate their vast variety of vegetarian and vegan sushi rolls. I love sushi, but as a vegetarian, my options are usually limited to a cucumber and avocado roll. Not here! They have about 10 different vegan rolls, and all of them are creative and tasty! My favorite rolls there are the veganzilla and the silence of the yams. The garden balls are also a must order, and a side of tater tots is always necessary to complete your meal! The only reason I give four instead of five stars is that sometimes the food and drinks are unpredictable. To drink I usually get the vodka limeade, which sometimes tastes good and sometimes tastes like carbonated lime water. Same for food: some days are really good and some days it's disappointing. But despite the occasional inconsistency which can be expected, I LOVE Sticky! read more

Worst take-out in years from Sticky Rice on Main Street. Chop Chop delivered, we were happy with their service, but the food from Sticky Rice ranged from bland to revolting. Their banh mi is not a banh mi, it is appalling. My partner and I each took one bite and couldn't eat more. Cold, mushy, pale, wet club roll (not a baguette as is fundamental to banh mi sandwiches, as a product of French colonization of Vietnam), and the meat and vegetable combo were soggy, mushy, and truly unfortunate/repellant flavor combination. It was actually inedibly disgusting, and had we dined in, I would have sent a meal back to the kitchen for the first time in recent memory. The tater tots served with the sandwich were undercooked, cold, and a texture that suggested they had never known crispness, even before being boxed up for the 0.6 mile drive to our location. For banh mi, we like Banh Mi Catina off Broad St. Authentic and only $5 (this was $12). Also ordered the curry chicken fried rice, which was bland, oily, and completely devoid of any hints of curry. I expected Japanese curry, like Vermont brand curry flavor profile, though the menu just says "sweet curry sauce." The hamburger was fine, but the tempura onions on top were all tempura, no onion flavor. Tater tots were same as described above. I haven't been to sticky rice in years but I am so glad I came back. They handled COVID very well seating us spaced very far away from others with several hand sanitizing stations. We started off with a carafe of saki which was delicious. We then got a plate of sushi that was absolutely amazing, the serving was good sized and came out quickly. Following the sushi we each got a noodle bowl that was equally delicious and came with enough food for two servings. This is definitely one of my favorite place to eat in Richmond - I love Asian food and Sticky Rice has a little bit of everything! We usually only get the Veganzilla, a massive sushi roll stuffed with crispy tofu and other vegan goodies and drizzled with two sweet, savory, creamy sauces. This time, we also tried the Dirty Vegan entree and the Veggie Tempura appetizer. I'm all for anything fried and dipped in sauce, and the tempura veggies were crispy, super hot, and served with a tangy sauce - so yummy, if only a tiny bit too greasy. The Dirty Vegan ended up being one of our favorites, which we hadn't expected - but the flavorful combination of peanuty sauce, stir fried veggies, crispy chewy tofu, and rice at the bottom of the bowl was a really tasty combination. Let me say that when the bucket of hot, fresh tots came out, my mouth dropped. It was magnificent and glorious and definitely the thing you should get while you're here. It's the showstopper and a great sharer for you and your friends! We went around dinner time, so it was very packed and we ended up sitting at the sushi bar. I do wish they had a coat rack or something, because we had to awkwardly put our coats on our lap so other guests could also sit at the bar too. However, it's a fun place and the service was nice. As for the food, the udon was tasty, but I wished there could have been more noodles and chicken and less vegetables as I felt a lot of if was filler and took away from the noodles. It is an Asian fusion and I wasn't keen on getting sushi here (it's hard to get good, affordable sushi in Richmond) so I felt like getting more izakaya-type food which is the direction I recommend. It was my first time trying warm sake so I don't have any comparison, but I normally prefer sweet, fruity drinks so it wasn't my favorite, but I think it complemented the food. The restaurant wasn't busy, yet we sat for over 20 minutes without having a single person stop by our table to even ask if we wanted drinks. We were starving, uncomfortable, thirsty, and sweaty, and the lack of service forced us to walk out. We sat there for 25 minutes (timed) and had servers pass by our table several times. I'm sorry but we won't be returning. It's also pretty concerning to go to a restaurant where they serve raw fish be as hot as it was in there. I ordered food for dinner from Sticky Rice last night and although the sushi was good, the so-called lettuce wraps were extremely disappointing. Other than providing lettuce, this in no way it resembled lettuce wraps. The mixture was a shredded stir fry mixture with fairly large chunks of chicken and large shreds of vegetables.
