I've never seen it overly crowded, and I'm not sure why. Just moved to town and this was my first stop. The food was exactly what I needed. Filling and tasty. My mom got the green curry with shrimp, she got chicken instead of shrimp but they immediately rectified it and brought us a side of shrimp. I got the pad Thai and it was tasty. The house made sticky rice with mango was such a treat. The coconut ice cream on top was perfect. Sticky Rice will definitely be my go-to for awesome Lao-Thai cuisine! The staff is personable and makes the environment that much more pleasant of an experience. Typically I expect to pay around $20 or more eating downtown for any meal, but Sticky Rice's prices are extremely reasonable for such quality food! Chicken Pad Thai is always my go to, but the veggie egg rolls and General Tso's Chicken do not disappoint either. In comparison to other downtown restaurants, Sticky Rice is located near so much available parking! As someone who has had to pay to park at work, it's refreshing to see a business offer parking for their employees. They work hard to provide excellent service. This may be my new favorite place to eat. I had the yellow curry dish and it exceeded my expectations. Very flavorful with just the right amount of heat and sweetness. Some Thai restaurants overdo the heat, but this dish was perfect. Allows the flavor of the spices to come through. The decor of the place is pretty plain, but looked clean. This place has so much potential, but the unforced errors spoil the experience. The Panang Curry is delicious. The do not offer chopsticks or Asian soup spoons absent a special request. Lunch meals are around $9.00 or $10.00 (Plus the 40 cent administrative fee we will address later....). At first they opened with six dedicated parking spots west of the building. They even painted "Sticky Rice" on each parking space. Then after a few weeks they put up a sign in the restaurant informing customers that if they park in those spaces they will "get towed." Apparently they have now decided to re-label those spots "Sticky Rice Employees Only." What a slap in the face of the customers. Since the employees only come and go every 4 to 8 hours, why not have the employees park a couple of blocks away and offer the prime parking spots to the customers? Free unmetered parking for employees could be found two blocks away in the 200 block of West Washington. Or at least hide that you are placing restaurant employee convenience ahead of your customer's convenience, by labeling the private parking spots more discreetly. Next, they have decided that the business model widely in use in America, of restaurants accepting credit cards is simply too great a burden for Sticky Rice and they have opted to post a note on the door explaining the 4% additional "Administrative fee" that will be tacked on to your bill after dinner. This is just done to ensure that you leave feeling bad about your experience. Blend the damn 40 cents into the cost of the $10 Panang Curry and take my credit card like everyone from McDonalds to Ruth's Chris, without an "administrative fee." Geesh. So, the food is good, the servers are not well-trained, and the experience adds unnecessary irritation to the dining experience. This business model may have worked in Charleston at the original location, but someone here needs to take a few steps back and engage some of the customers (more than superficially) to learn how people are really feeling. I'll go back. I'll optimistically hope they learn their lessons. I just wish when the hostess/owner asks "How was everything?," that she takes the time and makes the effort to LISTEN. Good Luck. We were happy to find this gem with authentic Lao food. The pork jerky, papaya salad (Lao style) and sticky rice are a great combination. We also enjoyed the mango sticky rice dessert with rich coconut ice cream. Yumm. Service was great and the owner was very friendly. read more

This place is hands down the best Thai place in the area. Amazing food and service. You have to try the shrimp in a blanket and my 2 year old loves the pork noodle soup. I usually get the pad kee mao it's perfect. They also let you control the spice level just in case you would prefer things with a little more heat! I associate Thai food with fresh, flavorful ingredients. Unfortunately, the food that we paid a premium for tonight ($11 extra for tip and delivery) were neither. The Thum Muk papaya salad was so salty and flavorless that we couldn't eat it. The entire dish ended up being tossed in the bin. No fresh Thai basil in any of our dishes. There was nothing that made us want to continue eating any of the items we ordered. I've had much better Thai food before. read more

Really glad to see a new Thai restaurant open in downtown Champaign, i have gone twice for lunch and i can gladly report the Pad Thai is excellent. Only criticism is the spice level, their hot isn't very hot, i added some dried spice that i requested and that helped tremendously. I also had the General's Chicken, and while not really a "thai" dish, it was excellent especially with fried rice. I plan to try a lot more on this menu, especially the Pho, add spice as needed there as well. read more

The best Thai and Vietnamese restaurant in town at this moment. My boyfriend and I visited Sticky Rice twice now and every time their food was excellent. We had their spring rolls, tom yum soup, chicken pho and massaman curry and all the dishes tasted great. Sticky Rice is amazing. The shrimp in a blanket is a necessity each time you dine. The Thai iced tea and iced coffee is great with any meal. I've had the sweet and sour chicken, the sesame chicken, and another dish that I can't remember the name of because it was awhile ago, but I know I can try anything on the menu and it'll be delicious. Eaten here twice recently when we were in Champaign, both times were delicious. Must say it is probably our favorite Thai restaurant in central Illinois. This review isn't about service or environment or much about the menu. It's strictly a rating of their chicken pad Thai. While I enjoy Thai food altogether, my absolute favorite dish is pad Thai. When I heard a new Thai place was opening downtown, I was VERY excited to check them out. I finally got around to it today and ordered the pad Thai with chicken. A few things to note: the color was very orange. Usually, I have found pad Thai to have this reddish-brown color, given by the tamarind used in traditional pad Thai sauce. The noodle quality was actually pretty great, not smushy or soggy or falling apart. The dish overall was quite awful, unfortunately. I really wanted to like them, but the sauce was overly sweet with a bitter aftertaste. I'm not sure how that happened but it was pretty bad. The lime helped a bit and so did adding some spice to it, but after a few bites, I couldn't take anymore and, while I hate to waste food, I threw the rest out. It was that bad. I don't know how good the rest of their food is, but I won't be going back. read more

We saw the newly opened Laotian place and were excited to try it. However, the experience was sorely lacking. The food was mediocre for the area, there are comparable places serving southeast Asia food. But the main complaint is the hidden "admin" fee to use your credit card. This was not reflect on the menu nor was I informed about it before getting my card swiped. The aggravating part is that when I asked the waitress about it, she passed it off as the norm here like I've been living in some other world my whole life. I can understand if there's a minimum limit to charge my card without a fee, but we spent nearly 40 bucks. Furthermore, after reading about Visa credit card surcharge policy, venders are not allowed to charge a surcharge unless you are paying the government and the surcharge must be a flat fee, not the 4% that sticky rice tries to pass off to the consumer. This is not the right business model, either increase ur price to reflect the proper cost, or just man up and say this is how cheap we are. Asian food is not lacking in Chambana and there is no reason to put up with this. read more
