Finally some good Chinese food! This place has been here most of my life, and I only discovered it twenty years after moving away. Oh the wasted years... On a visit back home my mom said there was no good Chinese food spots anymore. I said "challenge accepted." I knew I was in for a treat when I saw this place served 'hot braised chicken.' The last time I had hot braised chicken was from a restaurant called China Express that closed down back in the 90s, and I longed for it ever since. I placed my order and waited excitedly. An older gentleman in the restaurant said he likes coming here because it's the only place that makes Chinese food like he used to get in Chicago. You can't beat that kind of endorsement! Golden Wok did not disappoint at all! It wasn't the same hot braised chicken like China Express, but it was its own kind of delicious! I let my mom try some and we went back the next day for more! For a friend I picked up shrimp fried rice to go and its aroma lovingly enveloped my car. Personally I opted for the fresh spring rolls as I was about to catch a 3 hour flight home. If I lived in Champaign, I would get takeout from Golden Wok every night. We keep going back for the Lao pork sausage, Hainan Chicken, and eggrolls. Today, we got the pla lard prig. It was so good! We have also enjoyed the chicken wings and the beef with flat rice noodles. I would like to explore the rest of their Thai menu. The food reminds me of my childhood. After years of eyeing this place with interest as I drove past on the way to work, I had lunch here today. I ordered a red curry (chicken) and asked for "spicy". I ordered sweet and sour chicken. I got it and it looks like it has been fried in red 40 dye. I cut it open and the chicken is dyed red. The chicken is also chicken strips and not bite size pieces. I grew up in Champaign and felt so ashamed for not discovering the food culture and subsequently this place until I was in college at the U of I. I think this was one of the first places that I experienced thai cooking and I do not regret it at all. Recently, I came back to visit my parents over Thanksgiving and Golden Wok made the list of places (mostly restaurants) that we had to visit while we were in town. Living in NYC, you would think that we have plethora of options for finding good pad thai, but they're either too frilly, too expensive, too small. I forgot the blessing of living in an affordable city. I had to order the pad thai honestly the portions are huge here. Near the end, I was force feeding myself because I wanted to get as much of the yumminess in my tummy, but also felt that I would burst at any moment due to the abundance of food. There have been a number of problems with the pad thai I order around NY either they're too sticky, noodles overcooked, wrong (for me) flavor, but the pad thai at Golden Wok is so delicious even though it's a touch too sweet for my taste. The noodles were cooked perfectly, coated and cooked with the sauce in the right ratio and an absolute delight to eat. The meal itself is also very affordable and a great value for the amount of food that you get. The service has always been good and quick and the establishment is humble. I was extremely impressed with my overall experience here. Price is reasonable. Food is seriously delicious and everything seems to be made with fresh ingredients. The biggest thing that impressed me was the attention to detail. I ordered the spicy green curry with shrimp and I noticed that they cut off the shell of the shrimp all the way down to the tail, making it easier for you to eat the entire shrimp without having to dig out the meat. This is a Thai to-go place for me in the area. Golden wok offers variety of Chinese and Thai dishes. My main focus here will be on Thai food since it has been one of the best around here with excellent price point. Pad Thai is decent. For me it is a bit too sweet but still Golden Wok offers best Pad Thai around here. If you are more in to authentic food, I would recommend Nua Nam Tok, Laos Sausage, Tom Yum, Som Tum and Kana Mookrop. Their fried rice is very good as well. The price is very cheap compared to other Thai food places around the area. For college students this is one of the best places you'll get something good under 10 bucks. read more

I have been getting food here the past few years every time I visit Champaign. I first went because ordering online was convenient and the restaurant is only a few blocks from the hotel I stay at. But I was pleased to find out that the food is very good and has big portions. The customer service is great, too! Last week I went there and as I was walking back to the hotel with my food and drink, the cup that was holding my Thai iced tea spilled. This restaurant was well known among Asian students for Thai food. The owner is Laotian - I think. My roommates and I ate a lot during many years of study there. It was close to CS/ECE departments so there was time we ate almost here everyday. Most of the time we came there without saying a word -- the owner knew exactly our fav dishes. Even after I graduated nearly 10 years, I still missed the food. Maybe not just the food but all the memory. Here was what I noted for this restaurant before I left Champaign. Not sure if things have changed lately. ------ It was a deadly cold day. You were exhausted. Stepping out of the lab, you faced nothing but snow. Your research idea was stuck. Money was on low. Friends were all somewhere else enjoying their lives. TV was full of boring news about snow, traffic and accidents. You passed by a humble corner of 4th & University St. You noticed a restaurant. You didn't see its full name. But you saw the word "Golden". You decided to step in. You immediately got warm up by the owner's big smile. You didn't have to say anything, just simply sat down for 10 minutes. Then, you were brought to heaven with a delicious stir tofu with vegetables. It was beautifully mixed and poured with a special home-made sauce that were made for royal dishes. You ate slowly to enjoy every single bite. You looked out of the window and were wondering what the tomorrow could be? You had no answer. The owner simply came by and brought to you a fortune cookie. You opened it. Judging from its exterior (stale yellow wood siding, shady parking lot), I was sure I'd never eat at Golden Wok. I was even more suspicious of their advertisement of combined Thai and Chinese cooking. However, as I passed by one day, I noticed that the outside window declared that they served Hainan chicken rice, a traditional delicacy rarely mentioned outside of larger urban areas. I gave it a try, and now I swear by Golden Wok for my Thai cravings. Champaign diners go nuts for the pad thai here. I'm also a fan of this popular noodle dish, but for my review, I'd like to pay homage to another favorite dish from this modest little store: the tom kha kai. The tom kha kai soup comes in generous portions, with lots of chicken, soft mushrooms, bright chili flakes, slices of scallion, and a few pieces of ginger and lemongrass (shouldn't eat those last two, but at least they're testaments to the broth's beautiful flavor). Soups at Golden Wok are spooned over jasmine rice instead of noodles. This dish easily served as 3 meals for me, and is irresistible given its price ($7.35). read more

I ordered from the Golden Wok after reading good reviews here since I don't live in Champaign, got take-out of sweet and sour chicken, crab rangoon, and my boyfriend got spring rolls and szechuan beef. The crab rangoon came with 6 pieces that were very, very good. I recommend eating them with the sweet and sour sauce that came with my order. The sweet and sour chicken was also very good, huge portion size too! The dipping sauce for the chicken has a little spice to it but isn't too much to handle. Came with a ton of white rice too, had to split up the meal into two! For the spring rolls, the order came with two pretty large rolls and they were really tasty, even better with the sauce that came with them. When they ask if you want the szechuan beef spicy, BE WARNED! It is very, very spicy!! I'm a huge fan of spicy foods and this one definitely made me sweat. This place is still my favorite pad thai place. It's got some flavors in there that I feel that other Thai places are lacking. But let's talk about the duck fried rice. Though I do like the pad thai more than the duck fried rice, I feel that this deserves some special mentioning. It is delicious and is one of the best fried rice dishes that I've ever had. They pretty much took the chopped up roast duck that you'd typically find at Chinese stores and made fried rice with it. All the duck grease melds with the rice and it is awesome. Oh yeah, being chopped up means that there's bone in there too... to be careful about that. Regardless, this is yet another must visit if you're in this area. read more
