    E5 Pork Shrimp & Chinese Chives Dumpling(14) E5 (14)

Such a great place on the UIUC campus! I ordered the dumplings and they were super juicy, flavorful, and fresh! The skin on the dumplings were super delicious and the filling was amazing!! I recommend dipping it in black vinegar with chili oil (so good) My friend I went with got the beef noodle soup and it came out pretty fast! The soup was also very flavorful with a good spice. I'm definitely coming back here!!

My family loved this place. Son got the cold soy milk and a fritter. Wife (from Taiwan) said the soy milk taste is very authentic. he also got the 14 dumplings and I tasted one. Very good, you can tell they are not prepackaged frozen stuff. Daughter got the dandan noodles and was very happy with them. I got the spicy sour beef noodles and the beef taste was great. Was spicy but not so much it ruined the meal.. I could taste the numbing pepper but it must have been in the oil because I didn't crunch on any peppercorns. The only thing I would say was the oil layer was pretty thick. I like how you can customize your meal on the kiosk. Add cilantro, remove it, add an extra egg, etc

A really good Chinese noodles restaurant near campus! I ordered a Szechuan style pork rib tip noodle and added a fried egg. The soup looks red which seemed to be spicy, but actually it's not that spicy and just appropriate! The rib meat was soft and easy to chew, and the noodles were moderately soft. I really love the soup! Their service is in a fast speed and is very friendly. There're limited tables inside, and the majority of people go in may be single or in a family size, so sometimes it might be hard to find a seat, especially during rush hours. Additionally, the ambiance is nice and cozy, and I love their song list of Chinese pop music.

Cozy restaurant in the middle of UIUC campus with modern ordering kiosks and traditional plates. We were enticed by the photos of entrees, and tried a few - mushroom and pork dumplings, marinated potatoes, Szechuan beef noodle and pork soups, and chili chicken with potatoes over noodle. The soups were incredibly spicy with the hot capsaicin blocking the flavor of the broth, the noodles, and the meat. The dumplings had the most flavor yet the marinade was overpowering. The potatoes were also marinated with heavy oily hot sauce. Finally, the chili chicken was tender with a strong curry flavor yet the potatoes and the chopped pasta mediocre and bland. We liked the easy ordering process and utensil table setup where you could get your chop sticks, forks, little sauce plates, and water cups. The food came out promptly. The service is very spartan consisting of the food being brought to the table and plates removed. It was an interesting experience that we'll remember. Enough to try other places instead.

Food was delicious, service was friendly and quick, very laid back everyone to yourself type of place. Great place to enjoy a quick meal and people watch I paid $19 for Szechuan beef noodle soup and cucumbers in vinaigrette, it was delicious!

hands down on of my fav places in the area! the menu options are pretty broad but mainly noodles. the noodles are delicious!!! i got the Bone Broth Vermicelli and I still crave it to this day. perfect cooked rice vermicelli with bone broth. the meat and veggies work so well with the soup and the crunchy peanuts add a little something something. the ordering process is also super simple! you order from a pad ( has apple pay) and find a seat to sit. the utensils and water are all self serve. the waiters will call out your meal number and bring the food to you.

The sliced fatty beef W golden soup is causing me a severe stomachache right after. I doubt whether the ingredients are fresh.

We had the Spicy and Sour Noodles with Beef and the Dan Dan Noodles. Both dishes were delicious. Pleasant, helpful service. Not a long wait for our food. Clean and comfortable space.

When I crave a good hearty noodle soup, this is the restaurant I turn to. I usually get the beef noodle soup and have tried a couple other noodle soups. The dumplings here are tasty too. I recent tried the special beef noodle soup which was actually quite quite good. Spicy but not too spicy.

Bringing my son to UIUC saw the pics on Yelp decided to try out this place to my surprise it's as good as the pics on Yelp if not better! We ordered the beef shank & cucumber appetizer & 2 bowls of spicy beef noodles they are all delicious and spicy enough but won't burn your tongue Highly recommend

Beef soup in the back and pork soup with pickled veggies in the front
    Michelle T.

Mid-Summer Lounge is a Chinese restaurant that showcases various types of dry noodles, soup noodles, and dumplings. My whole table ordered noodles with soup. My soup came with pork and pickled vegetables. The taste of the broth was complex and I everything I tried. It's always really satisfying being able to find a soup that has a nice depth of flavor and a perfect amount of oil. The noodles were cooked really well and the pork was super tender. The beef noodle soup was pretty good as well. It's not as good as the homemade beef noodle soup my grandma makes and it's not as good as the beef noodle soups I get overseas but it passes the flavor test of a beef noodle soup in a restaurant in America. It was really filling but not too heavy. The noodles were also cooked well and the meat was tender with the perfect amount of salt. The service here is a little bit subpar. It can get difficult to grab a table during lunch / dinner times because you have to seat yourself. A lot of single diners come here and sit at four person tables because of the lack of smaller tables or booths. Dirty plates are also not immediately taken away and so a lot of tables are empty but occupied by trays full of used bowls. We sat at a table with dirty plates and it took about 25min for the items to be removed. I think this problem can be attributed to understaffing. The whole time we were there, there was just one girl taking orders at the counter and clearing the plates. Like other yelpers have mentioned, the language barrier here can be an issue if you're looking to customize specific menu items or special orders. However, like in most foreign places, I find it easy to simply point at pictures and pay when asked.

I ordered a lamb soup with glass noodles and this is what I got after nearly 20 minutes wait. The lamb was mainly fat and only has 4-5 pieces with only a tiny serve of glass noodles. Really disappointed.

It appeared that they do not speak the best English, but we didn't have any trouble ordering as there was an English/Chinese menu printed out, which we used to point to the item that we wanted to order. What we got: Beijing style JaJangmyeon: I had Korean-styled jjajangmyeon, so I didn't know what to expect at first. The portion size is beyond generous and the amount of topping on the noodles was more than enough. The noodles were soft and chewy. The dish tasted like peanut noodles which I am not the greatest fan of, but my friend loved it! Spicy fatty beef slices noodles: this was really good! I am a big meat lover and the amount of meat that came with this dish made me really happy! The dish was not too spicy and well-balanced. I wish there was a bit more soup because it was just a lot of noodles, but I think this is supposed to be more noodles than soup because it was one of their 'mixed noodles' dish. Overall, it was a very hearty meal. The owners were super kind enough to give us a free bok choy+fish cake side dish which we enjoyed as well. Despite the communication barrier, the service was great and the owners are super sweet people. I will definitely be coming back!

It took a little effort to order due to language BUT it was totally worth it! ORDERING The owner who was originally taking my order was so friendly but only spoke Chinese, so someone else had to step in and help me translate. I asked for the most popular noodle soups and he pointed to "dry beef noodle soup" and "pork shoulder noodle soup" so we ordered both. After you pick your dish he asks if you want spicy or non spicy. We got one of each. I personally liked the "spicy" version and thought it wasn't spicy at all! FOOD I ran into a friend there who knows the owner. He told me everything is made from scratch! Including the noodles. The broth was perfection. So fragrant, flavorful, well seasoned, and clean tasting. Meat was super tender (both beef and pork) and pretty much melted in our mouths. The "dry beef" in the name is totally misleading because there is nothing dry about the meat. ATMOSPHERE It seems like the restaurant kept most of the interior decor from PvP bakery so the aesthetic is pretty nice. Simple, clean, modern, minimal. It's sort of a self serve style in here so you have to get your own water. Just like most Asian restaurants. PACKAGING I ordered our meal to go but the restaurant IS also open for indoor seating. Our food was packed with care! The noodles and soup were packed in separate containers. I will add a note of caution while carrying the food. The hot soup warped the plastic container quite a bit so by the time I got home I noticed that the lid was just barely hanging on and on the brink of busting open. As long as it's held upright though it should not be an issue. Overall, if you're looking for a non frills place with good authentic Chinese food, this is the place to go! Price was pretty good too especially for how good the fooAbout $11 per noodle soup which is much cheaper than mid summer and golden harbor. We will definitely be back!

The porridge (congee) was 4 out of 10 for me. Lots of corn starch added, though it got thinner as I ate more. The taste seemed like MSG, though I am not sure how much was from the preserved egg. This was less than $10 and a big portion. I would have preferred less volume if it meant less corn starch. Ambiance: Pros for authenticity: the music playing are Chinese artists like JJ Lin. Cons: a bit of a musty smell when I walked in. For context, it had rained all day. I realize I'm not the target market (university student), though the food was disappointing.

First of all, do NOT order online for pick up or take out since it is much more expensive. The meat…read moredishes (pork, beef, etc.) in store were $16.99-$17.99. I was going to order online but they were all around $22-25. The rice special lunches in store were $9.99 but online is around $15. I actually came because my friend loved to come here a couple years ago and said it was his favorite restaurant on campus. I ordered the pork lunch special. And I was extremely disappointed. As seen in the picture when you open your food, there's just a whole ton of cabbage. I then sifted through it and counted less than 8 pieces of meat. And the bottom of the box was padded with a thick layer of rice. I also ordered a stewed pork bun. It lacked flavor and the meat to bread ratio was extremely off. I assumed because of COVID, prices went up (at least online) and less expensive ingredients were being used(meats) and more cheap materials were used to complete customer orders (rice and veggies). I know many restaurants have done this but my order was just laughably disappointing. Also I came to order on a Sunday afternoon. I was placing my order when the cashier told me that the cook was out and they couldn't make over 50-60% of the menu. That put me off a bit as I was originally going to order two things from the menu but they were both "unavailable". I think there should've been a note in the menu so customers would be notified before they spend 5 minutes looking at the menu to decide. Anyways that was a slight tangent. But another reason I gave this place 2 stars is because the cashier and workers were quite short. They would interrupt you while talking. It's just not the customer service I would expect. The only redeeming factor I believe was that one of few pieces of meat I had actually tasted pretty good. Besides this I do not think I will be back or will be recommending this place to anyone else. If you're craving authentic Chinese food, I believe there are many better options on campus (Northern Cuisine, Lao Sze Chuan, etc.).
