The hearty noodles were chewy with a slight taste of rice -- neither too refined nor over cooked. The beef broth brought the dish's rich taste and gave it some depth, while the bok choy and green onions in the soup were fresh and crispy. Even though the chili oil was a treat, it overpowered the broth and veggies so that I'd consider omitting it from the order. A really good Chinese noodles restaurant near campus! I ordered a Szechuan style pork rib tip noodle and added a fried egg. The soup looks red which seemed to be spicy, but actually it's not that spicy and just appropriate! The rib meat was soft and easy to chew, and the noodles were moderately soft. I really love the soup! Their service is in a fast speed and is very friendly. There're limited tables inside, and the majority of people go in may be single or in a family size, so sometimes it might be hard to find a seat, especially during rush hours. We were enticed by the photos of entrees, and tried a few - mushroom and pork dumplings, marinated potatoes, Szechuan beef noodle and pork soups, and chili chicken with potatoes over noodle. The soups were incredibly spicy with the hot capsaicin blocking the flavor of the broth, the noodles, and the meat. The dumplings had the most flavor yet the marinade was overpowering. The potatoes were also marinated with heavy oily hot sauce. Finally, the chili chicken was tender with a strong curry flavor yet the potatoes and the chopped pasta mediocre and bland. We liked the easy ordering process and utensil table setup where you could get your chop sticks, forks, little sauce plates, and water cups. The food came out promptly. The service is very spartan consisting of the food being brought to the table and plates removed. It was an interesting experience that we'll remember. Enough to try other places instead. read more

hands down on of my fav places in the area! the menu options are pretty broad but mainly noodles. the noodles are delicious!!! i got the Bone Broth Vermicelli and I still crave it to this day. perfect cooked rice vermicelli with bone broth. the meat and veggies work so well with the soup and the crunchy peanuts add a little something something. the ordering process is also super simple! you order from a pad ( has apple pay) and find a seat to sit. the utensils and water are all self serve. the waiters will call out your meal number and bring the food to you. read more

The quality of their food has gone down a lot since I last posted. We typically get our food Togo and the noodles are usually still pretty bouncy by the time we get home but the last few times it was way overcooked to where it was mushy. The pork rice wasn't very good either. The rice was very mushy in some parts. (I always judge an Asian restaurant by how good they cook their rice. This place failed.) pork and vegetables dumplings don't taste the same as before. Something definitely changed and it's not for the better. I also need to mention we initially tried ordering through their main website. After inputting our credit card info and hitting submit, nothing happened and didn't get a confirmation number or anything. I didn't want to start over as I didn't want to potentially get charged twice. We got to the restaurant and of course they didn't get our order. They need to work on fixing their website or remove the option to place online orders. What a shame, obviously we liked this place but now it's no longer one of our favorite places in town. :( read more

Decided to try Mid-Summer Lounge on a cold Saturday evening in March. I was just visiting for the weekend with some co-workers and one of my friends who went to UIUC recommended this place for noodles and dumplings. It was mildly busy in the restaurant when we walked in around 7pm, but we snagged a booth in the corner before checking out the menu and ordering up front. There were a lot of things on the menu that were standing out to me, but I ended up picking the Boiled Fish Fillet in Chili Oil Noodle because I really like the spicy fish soup and I thought it would be similar, just with noodles. Food: 1. D2 Boiled Fish Fillet in Chili Oil Noodle - My dish was pretty much how I imagined it. A big bowl of soup with a bunch of chilis, white fish, noodles, and bok choy. It was really good, but I would have liked it more if it had more Szechuan spice like the peppercorns. It was a large portion, so I barely was able to finish it. Lots of options for Chinese dumplings and noodles. Pretty casual spot with self-service seating and ordering at the front. You also pick up your food from the front after they call your number out. Mid-Summer Lounge is a Chinese restaurant that showcases various types of dry noodles, soup noodles, and dumplings. My whole table ordered noodles with soup. My soup came with pork and pickled vegetables. The taste of the broth was complex and I everything I tried. It's always really satisfying being able to find a soup that has a nice depth of flavor and a perfect amount of oil. The noodles were cooked really well and the pork was super tender. The beef noodle soup was pretty good as well. It's not as good as the homemade beef noodle soup my grandma makes and it's not as good as the beef noodle soups I get overseas but it passes the flavor test of a beef noodle soup in a restaurant in America. It was really filling but not too heavy. The noodles were also cooked well and the meat was tender with the perfect amount of salt. The service here is a little bit subpar. It can get difficult to grab a table during lunch / dinner times because you have to seat yourself. A lot of single diners come here and sit at four person tables because of the lack of smaller tables or booths. Dirty plates are also not immediately taken away and so a lot of tables are empty but occupied by trays full of used bowls. We sat at a table with dirty plates and it took about 25min for the items to be removed. I think this problem can be attributed to understaffing. The whole time we were there, there was just one girl taking orders at the counter and clearing the plates. Like other yelpers have mentioned, the language barrier here can be an issue if you're looking to customize specific menu items or special orders. However, like in most foreign places, I find it easy to simply point at pictures and pay when asked. read more

So bummed. This used to be my favorite place for noodle soup about a year or so ago, but they changed the menu up and it's just not the same. The chicken soup with bok choy and mushrooms was my favorite but I feel like the last couple times I got it, the chicken was not the same quality (tons of bone and cartilage compared to before), the broth was not as rich, and the general quality of the ingredients were not what they used to be. I believe in giving second chances :). So, after reading good reviews and that they have English menu now, I went here again. This time the restaurant had just one customer. I looked at the paper menu and selected chili noodles. I asked the lady behind counter if it contains any meat or just vegetables? She couldn't understand English and gestured me to wait for someone. After few minutes a man came out and I asked him same thing, but guess what? He too couldn't understand English. I ordered from this place using uber eats. Food was delivered a little later than expected but Id say it was pretty worth it. Noodles were a little clumpy at first but since the soup comes separately, they were quickly resdy to eat after I added the soup. Ive had the diced lamb flat noodles and that was amazing and reminded me of home. Lamb skewers were decent sized and had great flavoring and juiciness. My chinese labmates have been raving about this place since they opened. I can understand why. You order at the cashier and you seat yourself. The service was difficult at first because we ordered with a sweet lady who spoke only Mandarin but we got by just fine. There's a paper menu up front and you can point to what you want. She recommended the Beef Brisket Noodle. It was quite pricy but I went for it. We also got the pork & cabbage dumplings (16 pieces). The dumpling wrapper is a bit bland but the filling is so flavorful. Dip it in a little chili oil and it's perfect. The noodle soup. That is the star player. The broth is so flavorful. It looks spicy in photos but it only has a mild kick to it. The noodles are hearty. The beef is seasoned perfectly. It was such a heartwarming dish. If it weren't so pricey, I would come here all the time. I'm not sure what the hours are. We ended up sitting there until 11pm when we realized no one was left and the staff was enjoying dinner.
