I liked the cozy atmosphere, the bar tender was pleasant and kept up with the crowds, music was fine, nice space for dancing. The only service I received was from ordering from the bartender where you have to stand because there are no seats at the bar. My complaint, the cost of beer is overpriced. I had two beers at $10 each and I was charged $26 total. I recommend being mindful of your receipt because they automatically add a 20% Service Charge and 10% Tax, making it $13 all-in per beer, hence $26 for two. So there's no need to leave an extra tip when you pay your tab, unless you want to give away more of your money. Since they're inflating the price by charging 7 times the actual cost, or a 600% mark-up, I won't return. read more

I visited STFU on Saturday to celebrate a birthday. Based on the pictures and dress code, I was expecting one kind of vibe, but when I arrived, it was something completely different. It honestly felt like one of those "come as you are" church situations .lol There were people in dressed in rompers, tights, Jordans . I actually felt a little overdressed. That said, the place was packed, which made for a fun atmosphere. The DJ was good overall, though at one point he started playing church music. I'm not sure if people were just tipsy or didn't notice, because everyone kept dancing anyway. lol The drinks were decent, and the final bill was surprisingly low, which was a nice bonus. Since we were celebrating a birthday, our waitress even gave us a complimentary birthday shot. I'd definitely return. I'm curious to see what the vibe is like during the week. I watched the bartender make the drinks and he definitely picked up the bottle in the preparation but everyone in my party of 4 claimed there was no evidence of liquor. I took one star off for that. I came to this place wanting to experience the "speakeasy" vibes. Unfortunately, I cannot agree to that sentiment. I went here with some friends and we could barely hear each other - which was especially concerning as we came on a Saturday at 6 pm. The music was being blasted in our ears and this did not match with the chill vibes I initially thought coming into this place. In terms of the drinks, I thought this place was overpriced with mid tasting flavors. I wish I could say better remarks about my drink, but I could not even finish it at the end of my visit. The service was also very underwhelming. Our server dismissed our group when we wanted to order more drinks, so we all decided to leave after getting one drink respectively. If you're looking for a speakeasy with a sexy vibe then you definitely need to check out STFU! This is one of the newer speakeasys to open and is located in Navy Yard just around the corner from Chicken and Whiskey. Like many other speakeasys, it is located in the basement which is accessible an via elevator or stairs. As soon as you walk in, you get the sexy vibe from the lighting to the setup and decor. The staff is very friendly and they have a great menu of craft cocktails. On select nights they have a dj or live bands and karaoke. Definitely worth checking out if you like speakeasys! read more

This is the Friday night spot - well depending on the DJ, but still such a fun vibe! Now I never went inside after an ex-boyfriend lied about his whereabouts and was partying here, but I was ready to see if it lived up to the hype of ruining a relationship. I love that it is in navy yard so you are surrounded by restaurants and holiday events. It is a speakeasy style, so you go in and head down to the basement area, once downstairs you see the bar, DJ area, and then various areas for tables and free seating and of course the bar. The night I went a few different DJ's moved the crowd, the drinks were fine, no crazy menu or staple drinks from what I remember, and the service was the typical pace . A nice little speak easy, nestled in the basement of a building in the Navy Yard. The vibe is more lounge than anything else, with dark lighting and music playing. The servers all wore dress shirts with bow ties, which didn't really match the vibe of the place. They only serve alcohol, no food, so don't go there hungry, which is one of the reasons why I left after only one drink. The other was the uncomfortable seating along the wall. As far as the drink that I had, they have an assortment of cocktails that you can order from the menu. The drinks were pre-made, so that was a major disappointment. Stopped in here after dinner on a Friday night. Solid cocktails saved an otherwise confusing venue. The good: the drinks here are good, an interesting and unique selection of cocktails made fresh by an army of friendly staff. We tried three of the house drinks and my wife loved the hot honey addition. The bad: the atmosphere is a bit confusing. It was set up as a lounge when we were there but the single large open room with concrete floors, large screen tv walls and dj booth made it feel much more like a dance club and not like the intimate lounge that the furniture and staff outfits seguested it was. Maybe we were just here to early and they do move the low tables from the room and turn into a nightclub at some point but while we were there it seemed like the space design and atmosphere were really at odds with the lounge theme. The mediocre: Hidden bar/speakeasy niche. This is a fun novelty that I have enjoyed in the past and I like the general setup of the entrance to this bar for that reason. However again they undermine this novelty by putting red velvet ropes and a bouncer outside the street entrance. This is a cute little speakeasy that has a really cool vibe. It's starting to get very popular so if you come, especially when they do Sunday fun day expect to be waiting a while to get in. You also do need to get tickets in advance for certain events that they have. Overall, I really enjoyed their Espresso martini. Their menus are always changing, so be sure to check out some of their latest concoctions. They really do a good job with craft cocktails and the space is really cool. It gets super packed and you'll be very very hot in there so just be mindful if you go in the winter And you bring a heavy coat. We came for a quick drinks after a Nationals game and love the speakeasy vibe. Sadly, there are many things wrong with this place. First off, we ordered a Prosecco and had the bartender promise it was Prosecco when I told him it was flat and he begrudgingly poured us new glasses. We ended up with Prosé sparkling wine from Italy, which is not Prosecco, and made of completely different grapes. It was not great. Then, we found out they add a 20% auto-gratuity on all services without telling anyone or giving a check for review before paying so the bill seemed a little high. When I spoke to a manager about the "apparent" overcharge issue and the fact that they incorrectly named sparkling wine prosecco, he had to look at the bottle to confirm it was in fact not prosecco. He offered to take back our glasses and refund our drinks. That was a nice gesture but the overcharge was not clarified until he waved a receipt in my sisters face and showed the price included a 20% auto-gratuity which the bartender (nor manager) deserved seeing as how neither of them knew it was a sparkling wine and not prosecco to begin with. Their attitudes were crass and unprofessional and if their only solution is to "take back our drinks because we seem unhappy about everything" and give us a refund, needless to say their customer service could also use some help! It's too bad too because the venue has a lot to potential and a good DJ. Hate to knock it but unless they change their manager, I won't be back and I highly suggest you rethink going. read more

My friend and I decided to check out this new neighborhood bar, but were a bit disappointed by how gimmicky the whole set-up was. Their website didn't capture a classy speakeasy, and it seems like they are struggling with their theme. While the service was 10/10, the drinks we ordered were highly disappointing. We got the Trail to Bliss (rum, grapefruit, cherry cordial) and the Pass the Buck (whiskey and honey). Both were overly sweetened and tasted more like syrup. I know they are in their soft opening phase, so I think there may be a few things they still need to work through with the drinks. Also the prices for the cocktails were really high considering how poorly they were made. I probably won't be going back, but wish them the best of luck. read more

I would not recommend coming here at all. The door is very discriminatory in its admittance. I've seen them turn certain people away for wearing shorts, and meanwhile, let in other groups of people with shorts on. I've also seen them charge one certain group of people money to get in, and let in other groups for free. I would really urge management to train its staff on how to treat potential customers. This place is a basement at the bottom of a hotel, it's not a rooftop at the top of the Empire State Building, yet they operate as such. 0/10 - would not recommend. read more

It was explained to me that they hatch everything prior to opening and can not make drinks if they are not on the menu. I have never heard of such a thing and was very surprised. I live in LA and decided to visit this lounge after seeing it on TikTok. It seemed chic, and the cocktails looked impressive. Having previously lived in Navy Yard, I was excited to check out something new in the neighborhood. When I arrived, I was immediately told, "no hats." This was an immediate red flag for me because, in my experience, only tacky, uptight, or discriminatory places have arbitrary rules like this--especially since my group and I were dressed exceptionally stylish and put together. I didn't want to go in, but I did because my friends insisted. Once inside, I felt like I was being punked. The DJ was all over the place, and the vibe felt corny. To top it off, I noticed three staff members wearing caps, which seemed hypocritical given their policy. The atmosphere was far from high-end or stylish. Most importantly, the drink was a 6/10. My friends and I decided to visit STFU after a Nationals game. After allowing all of my friend group ahead of me and myself entry, the bouncer denied entry to my last friend that was with us. The bouncer (and then later on who I believed to be a manager/higher up) stated that this was because my friend was wearing a sports jersey, which does not follow their dress code. While I completely understand enforcing a dress code for a social bar like this, I have 3 major issues with the way this was handled. Firstly, is that the dress code is not listed anywhere on their website. Additionally, a managing partner even said to Eater DC that "While there's no set dress code, per se, casual athletic wear and baseball caps are discouraged in lieu of a classy, "well-groomed" look." While I later found out that *a few* of their Instagram posts state, "dress code enforced", there is no explanation as to what the dress code actually is. Additionally, a good portion of their posts do not include anything about the dress code, nor does their Instagram bio. It is not very hospitable to assume that guests will dig through a speakeasy's Instagram to find a few posts broadly stating "dress code enforced" with no details/explanation. Considering this place is located 500 feet from a baseball stadium, I find it to be of extreme importance that the dress code has at least some minor details if they are to be enforcing it as such, and should be easy to find-primarily on their website. Secondly, the friend that I was with who was denied entry was also the only black person in my group. It is also important to note that myself and several other friends in my group were also wearing baseball jerseys and we were allowed in without any issues. When I politely pointed this out to the bouncer, he smirked at me and said it is up to his judgement. I responded by pointing out the obvious- Stating that all of my other friends and I were allowed in with jerseys/various fashionable athleusiure, which is also how my friend who was denied entry was dressed, but that said friend was the only black person in our group. I then asked him if he still thought his decision was fair and appropriate, to which he brought who I believe was a manager out. The manager treated my friend with the same discrimination as the bouncer until I flat out said that they were being discriminatory, to which they ended up allowing my friend in as long as she took off her jersey. Please note that at no point during this was I, or any other guests who were allowed entry, asked to take off their jerseys; This still does not sit right with me. On top of all of this, it is extremely frustrated that they could have simply asked my friend to take off her jersey to enter from the beginning, which would have avoided this situation entirely. Lastly, is my overall concern with safety. It was nighttime and dark out when this occurred, so the fact that they let my group fully enter to where all but one of my friends were inside and did not see/hear this take place concerns me. Had I not lingered, I would not have seen my friend be denied and entry and been able to advocate on her behalf, since they turned her away and did not give her the time of day after denying her entry. The thought of my friend, a young woman, being outside and alone, physically isolated from the group of people she knows, is something I cannot shake. While I understand it is difficult to distinguish who is with what group, it is truly a shame that they could have cared less about leaving her outside alone. Once we did all make it inside, the place was dead. Maybe 20 guests at most, just standing around. The ambiance was not great, so we ended up leaving a few minutes after this situation and ended up having a fun night at other, much more hospitable, bars. Yesterday a friend of mine went to a private party at this poorly run establishment. Unfortunately, his experience mirrored at least 7 other groups. The management team directed its security staff to harrass and attack my friend. Three security professionals, slammed, punched, choked and dragged my friend shortly after he stopped two patrons from escalating a verbal arguement(not physical). Since this is the most egregious of several other reported incidents, i say stay away. read more

I had an extremely disappointing experience at STFU Navy Yard yesterday. As a DC native, I have never experienced such blatant disrespect from an establishment in my 39 years of living here. My friend and I had an 8pm reservation. We arrived approximately 30 minutes early and was unsure where the lounge was once we entered the building as there is no signage. A gentleman walked in before we did and was standing in front of the elevator so we asked were we in the right location for STFU. He said yes but he wasn't sure if they were open yet. I told him we were a little early for our 8pm reservation and we would just go down to see if we could check in now or just come back in 20 minutes. He then helps us on the elevator to the lower level for STFU. We told him thanks and proceeded to the host to let him know we had a reservation but arrived a little early. He then advised we could sit anywhere. The bar had a handful of people and the main seating area was empty so we opted for one of the smaller tables in the main seating area and ordered our drinks. Around 8:30pm, we decided to get one more drink and then head out. We get our 2nd round of drinks, I paid our tab, put on my coat and told my friend to sit tight while I run to the restroom before we leave. I asked our waitress where was the restroom and as I'm getting up for the restroom, the gentleman that helped us on the elevator comes over and tells my friend she has to remove her hat. We were completely confused because 1) we had no clue he worked there especially since he claimed to not know if they were open when we initially arrived; 2) my friend had that very same hat on when he saw us walk into the building, when we got on the elevator with him, and while having drinks for well over an hour at this point; and 3) there were 2 guys at the table in front of us that he bypassed with hats on. My friend inquired who said she had to remove her hat and why wasn't the hat policy mentioned when we walked in the building. He stated he was just security, he wasn't "on the clock" when we walked in, and he is only enforcing the manager's policy. My friend asked to speak to the manager. The general manager came over with an instant attitude and was completely dismissive. It should be noted the GM was at the bar when we initially walked in and said nothing about her hat. We said forget it , we were leaving anyway and proceeded to get up to head to the exit. The security guard then puts his hands on my friend to push her towards the elevator. We told him that was absolutely unnecessary. The GM walked in front of me and stopped by the elevator and I reiterated that this was completely unacceptable treatment. The GM then says to me "I'm going to walk off before I do something." I asked was that a threat and he just walked off. The security guard continued to be aggressive as we got on the elevator and my friend ultimately ended up contacting MPD to facilitate in getting the names of the GM and security guard to report the incident to corporate since they refused to provide the information when asked before we left. Once MPD showed up, the GM's demeanor changed completely. MPD even asked why several people were able to walk into the establishment with hats on while she was taking his information and he stated they were the DJs. I have never expected to feel so unsafe or disrespected in any establishment. It was mighty convenient how once we spent our money and sat a minute too long, my friend's hat became an issue. I did not see a hat policy posted when I made the reservations and several of the post on their social media pages as recent as last week show several patrons with hats on. Had security mentioned no hats when we walked in, we would've respected it and took our business elsewhere. Unfortunately, this is not the first incident as Yelp has several other reviews of similar disturbing and racist experiences with security and management at this establishment. With that, I strongly do not recommend patronizing STFU Navy Yard especially people of color. The management and the security staff lack professionalism and customer services skills. Spend your money where you are appreciated, treated fairly, and respected! read more
