I came to Shanklin Hall for a "Bring Your Own Book" event and had such a great time. The atmosphere was perfect for a more relaxed evening--I was able to read, catch up with a friend over dinner, and really enjoy the space without the usual weekend crowd. It's a completely different vibe, and honestly, I prefer it this way--more room to breathe and actually take it all in. The special that night was fish and chips, and it was excellent. Perfectly seasoned, super crispy, and honestly surprising because I'm not usually a whiting fan--but this completely changed my mind. I also had the Players Club cocktail, which I really enjoyed. The ginger beer flavor and effervescence made it refreshing and easy to sip throughout the night. The bartender and food runner were incredibly sweet, the service was on point, and the overall experience felt thoughtful and easy. Came with friends on a birthday bar crawl. This venue is upstairs in AdMo with a pretty open dance floor and regular bar space. The djs always seem to play the music really loud here. I'm not sure if they have a kitchen or food menu but the bar is okay and the drinks are strong. read more

I have been to Shanklin Hall quite a few times. Usually for an event but it's always good vibes. Their cocktails are always well made and my favorite staples on the food menu are the fries, kale Cesar salad and the wings. They never disappoint and really nice sized portions. I love the ambiance here and how Black-centric it is. The music is a vibe and the staff was friendly and attentive. The food menu is limited to four offerings so your best bet is the drinks here. Cocktails are on the pricier side ($17 each as of this writing) so I wasn't knocking them back. I highly recommend as a place to hang out and kick back while sipping your beverages. My first time visiting was for a comedy show called Laughter Hour. The spot is intimate with a first come, first serve seating. We arrived around 7pm. The show was an hour featuring 4 really good comedians. The comedy show 5/5 Cocktail: Afro Americano - their version of a espresso martini 4/5 The bar is filled with a variety of liquors that are black owned , woman owned, local or natural. This was my first time going to Shanklin Hall after hearing nothing but great things about it. I came for a networking event that had 3 different organizations booked at the same time, so it was a little too crowded and loud for my liking especially since the space isn't that big, but I can see how it would be a nice lounge spot when it's not overbooked. I didn't personally get any food, but a few people I came with order the SH Signature Burger and absolutely devoured it! If anything, I'm going back just to try their burger firsthand. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. The prices are what you would expect for a DC bar/lounge in Adam's Morgan, but definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a spot that's a bit more formal than the traditional bar scene. read more

Love this spot! Don't love the parking (or lack of) in Adams Morgan! I first introduced to this business through a Yelp event earlier this year. Learned that it was started by a group of friends all from the area! Love a good back story! I recently visited on a Friday night when a friend came in town. We both had a good time. My review is from my 3 visits: November & December 23 and April 5th. Prior to April I'd visited Shanklin twice for birthday gatherings and really enjoyed myself. The drinks are solid, music was amazing and the food is decent enough for a bar. I've always defaulted to wings and fries and you can't go wrong with that. Located in Adam's Morgan the bar itself is only identifiable on the outside by a SH, very lowkey. You can park in a garage not too far from SH but it is TIGHT and will run you about $21. You can try street parking but it may be in short supply. Inside the ambiance is very neo centric and colorful with a base of deep greens and golds they use decor to pop color here and there. I would say capacity is probably around 50-75 people. Prior to 10pm they provide seating and such at the bar and at the corners of the walls but after they move the chairs to make space for dancing. Because I enjoyed it so much in November and December I knew I wanted to have my birthday there. The bartender Desmond's birthday was 4/3 so we had him join in on the fun and we even got shots from the owner :). All of the servers were friendly and accommodating especially the young lady with the low cut who helped me with my friend group as they filtered in throughout the night. My ONLY GRIPE for my visit on 4/5 was the DJ, he awful (my opinion) , he played house music nearly 85% of the set and refused all requests. It was such a 180 from my two previous visits that it was disappointing. Overall my friends all enjoyed the night but each of them mentioned how disappointed they were in the music because outside of that the vibe was a 10/10. Stopped here will visiting DC but was slightly disappointed upon arrival. The site stated the location opened at 5pm however, when we arrived the door was locked. When we spotted a worker, it seemed as though he didnt want to come to the door and inform us of the why they weren't open. He later told us they'd open at 530/6pm. Thankfully the Porch Fest was going on down 18th street so we were able to find something to do to kill time since we really had this on our list. After the third time of checking the door, we were finally able to get in. This is a social club open to the public, membership isn't needed unlike other social clubs which is a plus. The inside is set up so nicely from the pictures on the walls, the choice in furnshing, to the vinyl record stand and might I add, the food is just as good! Along with cocktails and mocktails, they offer light bites that include french fries, egg rolls, chicken and more. I ordered the sweet soy & ginger glazed chicken topped w/sesame seeds & green onions and it was fried perfectly with the right amount of sauce. Soy and ginger can be a bit overbearing but this wasn't at all. Service was fast and the bartender was very accommodating, he even let me sample their ginger beer. Here are some of my thoughts from my visit: Environment Shanklin Hall is a beautiful space with great artwork through out that adds to the ambiance. It's has a modern, intimate and laid back touch that feels welcoming and comforting. There's plenty of lounge seating and a full bar with plenty of seating. They had music playing through out the space that was great for the setting. During the afternoon it was pretty chill and quiet but I was told that it gets a bit more crowded and energized as the night goes on. I definitely loved the vibes for a cool chill evening out on the town. Service Our server was great and attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. She gave us recommendations for drinks that were great and her overall service made our experience better. Food and Drinks All the drinks were great! I will definitely be back to try other cocktails off the menu. They bring in different chefs through out the year and the chef they had this day was great. All the food was delicious and I look forward to returning to see what else they have on the menu. Overall Overall we had a great time at Shanklin Hall. I love everything about Shanklin, but what I love the most is that they value community. As a business launched by friends who are all locals, they've been able to really have a great pulse on creating space that is welcoming to everyone but also still very appealing to folks that have been born and raised in the DMV. The space itself is the perfect size - cozy and intimate enough to not feel overwhelming, but large enough that it doesn't feel limiting with beautiful decor and ambiance. I have a few friends that also DJ here from time to time and although I have yet to catch them at this venue, the fact that they're being booked here let's me know that the music is sure to be on point. My last visit here was for a cocktail competition which the space was perfect for. It was such a joyful evening with the best energy. Shanklin was the backdrop, but between the food, flow and space it's evident that this is also just a well run establishment. AdMo is definitely not the easiest neighborhood to launch a successful business in, but Shanklin is doing just that. I wish them all the best and love what they're doing! read more

Didn't like the pushy doorman who was pressuring me to give out my number after I told him we were from Dallas. I've heard nothing but great things about Shanklin hall and had to check it out for myself. To have a black owned / woman owned space on this level in Adams Morgan is amazing. I popped in on a Friday night kinda early as things started get jumping around 9pm. what I loved most was the music was a mix of 90 hip hop and R&B. They have a DJ that comes on a 10pm so if you are looking dance this is the place. The bartender (Ike) was extremely nice and engaging with the entire bar. He suggested drinks and educated the different cocktails. They carry the new Kevin Hart Tequila ( Gran Caraminio) and many other black owned wines and liquors. One thing to note is the drinks are pricey... our drinks ended up being $40 a piece... although had crafted , I wasn't prepared or away is that and felt expensive when most high end bars top drinks in DC aren't $40 bucks. We also ordered food... you can't go wrong with the oxtail egg rolls and the yuca fries. I loved how it's paired with dipping sauce. When visiting be sure to check out the amazing art. I went for my friend's networking event! The vibes were amazing. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. For food and drink, I opted for the kale Caesar salad and a white sangria. Shanklin Hall has stunning, eclectic, lavish interior design that was complimented by the excellent music I enjoyed all night. The person on the playlist had a great mix of kaytranada going. There was also a jazz band with a poet performing who added a lot to the vibe. The bartenders were knowledgeable and friendly. I ended up trying a whiskey cocktail that was a little too sweet for me, but I would definitely try something else next time! I loved the Black owned brews featured on the menu. Soulmega Worldwide is a beer I always super enjoy. The malty notes accompany an extremely smooth brew. On to the food! The tempura fry on my chicken sandwich was light and the breast was cooked perfectly! Super juicy. I however wanted it to be more flavorful. The meat needed more salt/seasoning or sauce to be a hit for me. The top of the bun of the sandwich was charred in a crosshatch pattern for aesthetics I'm assuming, but the burnt bread added a really acrid flavor to each bite that I didn't enjoy. I ended up tearing off the top of my roll. The fries also had an a strange citrus seasoning on them, reminded me of "hint of lime"' chips or perhaps if someone squoze lemon all over my fries. This was a turn off for me. If fries are going to be any flavor beyond just classic with salt, I would want the menu or server to alert me to that. I would ultimately try something else next time, or come less hungry and opt for sharing some of the bites on the menu. Overall, after spending many hours in this spot when it was formerly Columbia station, I'm excited to see how Shanklin Hall has breathed new life into this space. I want to start off by saying I really loved the decor and vibe here. The music was also good. However, I came here on a Saturday night after 10pm. This is import to note because when my small group tried to order a drink we were told no cocktails/ mixed drinks are served after 10pm, although they still had cocktail menus out. Visited Shanklin hall a few weeks ago and the vibe was it! I specifically visited on a Friday night, the crowd was maybe late 20s to 30s and everyone seemed mature and very chill. My friend and I sat at the bar and the bartenders were efficient and friendly. It's definitely a nice speakeasy-feel vibe. The music was also really good, unfortunately the DJ had some technical difficulties but nonetheless good music. I didn't get to the try the food, but the menu had a nice range of small bites at the time I went and people seemed to be enjoying the food. I ordered the thug passion drink which was delicious and served it's purpose. Overall, if you're looking for black owned bar in Adams Morgan with a majority black crowd, this is a great place to visit. I will definitely return!
