I love the ambiance here and how Black-centric it is. The music is a vibe and the staff was friendly and attentive. The food menu is limited to four offerings so your best bet is the drinks here. Cocktails are on the pricier side ($17 each as of this writing) so I wasn't knocking them back. I highly recommend as a place to hang out and kick back while sipping your beverages. Parking is very limited and seating is first come first served so be warned.

My first time visiting was for a comedy show called Laughter Hour. The spot is intimate with a first come, first serve seating. We arrived around 7pm. The show was an hour featuring 4 really good comedians. The comedy show 5/5 Cocktail: Afro Americano - their version of a espresso martini 4/5 The bar is filled with a variety of liquors that are black owned , woman owned, local or natural. Overall, the service was good and I enjoyed the comedy show. Can't wait to return to try the food or visit for another event.

This was my first time going to Shanklin Hall after hearing nothing but great things about it. I came for a networking event that had 3 different organizations booked at the same time, so it was a little too crowded and loud for my liking especially since the space isn't that big, but I can see how it would be a nice lounge spot when it's not overbooked. I didn't personally get any food, but a few people I came with order the SH Signature Burger and absolutely devoured it! If anything, I'm going back just to try their burger firsthand. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. The prices are what you would expect for a DC bar/lounge in Adam's Morgan, but definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a spot that's a bit more formal than the traditional bar scene.

My review is from my 3 visits: November & December 23 and April 5th. Prior to April I'd visited Shanklin twice for birthday gatherings and really enjoyed myself. The drinks are solid, music was amazing and the food is decent enough for a bar. I've always defaulted to wings and fries and you can't go wrong with that. Located in Adam's Morgan the bar itself is only identifiable on the outside by a SH, very lowkey. You can park in a garage not too far from SH but it is TIGHT and will run you about $21. You can try street parking but it may be in short supply. Inside the ambiance is very neo centric and colorful with a base of deep greens and golds they use decor to pop color here and there. I would say capacity is probably around 50-75 people. Prior to 10pm they provide seating and such at the bar and at the corners of the walls but after they move the chairs to make space for dancing. Because I enjoyed it so much in November and December I knew I wanted to have my birthday there. The bartender Desmond's birthday was 4/3 so we had him join in on the fun and we even got shots from the owner :). All of the servers were friendly and accommodating especially the young lady with the low cut who helped me with my friend group as they filtered in throughout the night. My ONLY GRIPE for my visit on 4/5 was the DJ, he awful (my opinion) , he played house music nearly 85% of the set and refused all requests. It was such a 180 from my two previous visits that it was disappointing. Overall my friends all enjoyed the night but each of them mentioned how disappointed they were in the music because outside of that the vibe was a 10/10. I had friends go the next day and from their stories I could tell I just caught them on a bad DJ day. Don't invite him back, tysm.

I came here with my cousin in love for a work event kickback. The vibes were good and the woman who served us our drinks (I believe she was the owner) was pretty attentive. The drinks we ordered were specials of that particular night and unfortunately I don't remember their names but I would give the drinks an 8.5/10 collectively. I also tried their fries which were delicious, 10/10.

Came here with a group and sat on a couch near the back. We had to order at the bar and it was a good time with decent drinks but I'm not sure I loved it more than any other bar I've been to. Would come back and try again though!

Stopped here will visiting DC but was slightly disappointed upon arrival. The site stated the location opened at 5pm however, when we arrived the door was locked. When we spotted a worker, it seemed as though he didnt want to come to the door and inform us of the why they weren't open. He later told us they'd open at 530/6pm. Thankfully the Porch Fest was going on down 18th street so we were able to find something to do to kill time since we really had this on our list. After the third time of checking the door, we were finally able to get in. This is a social club open to the public, membership isn't needed unlike other social clubs which is a plus. The inside is set up so nicely from the pictures on the walls, the choice in furnshing, to the vinyl record stand and might I add, the food is just as good! Along with cocktails and mocktails, they offer light bites that include french fries, egg rolls, chicken and more. I ordered the sweet soy & ginger glazed chicken topped w/sesame seeds & green onions and it was fried perfectly with the right amount of sauce. Soy and ginger can be a bit overbearing but this wasn't at all. Service was fast and the bartender was very accommodating, he even let me sample their ginger beer. Compared to the other locations we visited on 18th street that day, if you're looking for a mellow, laid back environment this is the one!

Really cool social club, lounge, bar, creative space located in the heart of Adams Morgan. Stopped by to hang out with a few friends for after work bites and drinks and had a wonderful time. Beautiful space with great vibes for drinks, good music and good food. Here are some of my thoughts from my visit: Environment Shanklin Hall is a beautiful space with great artwork through out that adds to the ambiance. It's has a modern, intimate and laid back touch that feels welcoming and comforting. There's plenty of lounge seating and a full bar with plenty of seating. They had music playing through out the space that was great for the setting. During the afternoon it was pretty chill and quiet but I was told that it gets a bit more crowded and energized as the night goes on. I definitely loved the vibes for a cool chill evening out on the town. Service Our server was great and attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. She gave us recommendations for drinks that were great and her overall service made our experience better. Food and Drinks All the drinks were great! I will definitely be back to try other cocktails off the menu. They bring in different chefs through out the year and the chef they had this day was great. All the food was delicious and I look forward to returning to see what else they have on the menu. Overall Overall we had a great time at Shanklin Hall. It's a great spot for drinks with friends, for a date, or for a night listening to great music. I highly recommend and will definitely be back just to be in such a cool atmosphere. This may become my new hang out spot. Loved it!

My first visit to Shanklin Hall was less than a month ago and I've already come back to bring my bestie. This time we were kindly greeted by Shawnee (I hope that's the correct name) and the customer service was consistent with my first experience. Shawnee made sure to check in on our experience and proactively gave us a heads up when the kitchen would be closing. The vibes were chill, the music was nice, and once again I enjoyed my SH experience. I cannot wait to recommend this establishment to others.

The Crucible Flimflam on a Double-Throuple Date Night…read more So we met up with a dope ass Throuple at BAMM's Karaoke night last Thursday. All six of us caught a vibe but it was a vanilla event so the plan was to go on a double-throuple date Friday night. Not sure who picked it but we decided to meet up at the Crucible. I'm pretty sure it was the first time for all of us so we were excited to try a new place together. According to the event's fine print, the educational talks and demos were scheduled first but then "The Exploratorium" would be open after 11 p.m. I remember specifically reading, "More experienced folk come on out after 11:00 PM for open play." Well like I said, we had already caught the vibe the night before so we were ready to ride the wave the next night. We arrived at 11:15, dressed to impress and ready to party. The six of us stood in front lobby for a while. Apparently, no alcohol is allowed on the premises so the men had to run the drinks back to the car. I should have been paying attention to the faces of the people exiting or even the fact that folks were leaving soon after arriving. I guess I was so full of anticipation about the good time that I didn't notice. Well after we finally checked in, we were free to walk to the back. There are lockers and a changing area to the left. The restrooms are co-ed. The main hall opens into a large room with a bar and stage. There are several stations scattered about the room. A couple Saint Andrew's crosses, a horse, a canopy bed, a few overhead hooks, etc. To the right, there is a large open "theater" area. I think there were couches in there. And finally in the back left corner, there is a room with a swing and a couple fuckable chairs. I don't recall any music. It was eerily quiet with a weird mix of cocktail hour chatter and whipping noises. The lights were ON! Waaay too bright for an LS environment if you ask me. In fact, the whole setup wasn't really conducive to the type of on-premises fun we were looking for. The open floor plan makes it impossible to have an intimate experience. We walked around but it was difficult to find a place to get comfy with our party of six. I don't know if it was just a feeling we got or the fact that we were just in a new space but it felt like the entire couple watched us walk around and were waiting for us to "go." The crowd was almost entirely white. Maybe 30 people in the room. And we were six tall, sexy, Black people striding around the room in out panties and heels rubbing and groping each other. Even the men were shirtless and glistening! We looked good enough to eat and the crowd was drooling. We made our way to the room on the left with the swing. It's not at all private but at least we could get nasty without being on full display. The six of us started to "go" but the gentleman in the other couple was a little hesitant. He said that something was off so he wanted to check to make sure we could indeed play. He went to find an attendant to confirm that open play was allowed. Well, thats when they hit us with the flimflam. As the tip of my husband's dick just touched the lips of one of the young ladies, the attendant informed us that "absolutely no oral" was allowed on the premises. According to her, while sex on the premises is typically allowed, this was the one night that it was not. I went back and checked the fine print: "More experienced folk come on out after 11:00 PM for open play." Did I miss something? When they said play did they mean we could have play sex on their equipment? Were we really the only people who expected to "play"? Was there something particularly offensive by our half-naked Black bodies that prevented us from playing? Whatever the case, the Crucible is not swinger friendly at all!! Total waste of money. Date night killer. So basically we paid $100 to look at their equipment and pantomime sex. The shit almost blew our whole double-throuple date. We left for Shadows about 15 minutes after getting there. (The Shadows ripoff story is for another day.) Next time, we'll just go to a hookah lounge. Dance a little. Sip a little. Then we can just get a room. Unless you really really just want to attend educational event, stay away from the Crucible. It is an overrated waste of money.

Of course my friend is a member and if I'm lucky, someday I will be too. It started off as I walked up the sidewalk and approached the club, the doorman was standing on the sidewalk. As I got closer, the doorman greeted me by name! I was taken a back for a minute wondering how could he possibly know my name! I was escorted in and asked to wait in the main reception while they went to get my friend. I went into what they refer to as the "Correspondence Lounge" which is sort of a small library with some incredibly old literary works. They have very strict rules and one of surprise is no use of cell phones... period. How refreshing! You can go into the Correspondence Lounge if you need to use your phone but otherwise you cannot use while in the dining room or other public areas. So make sure you "check-in" on Yelp when you are outside. Naturally they have a dress code, but really, if you have to ask what the dress code is, you probably aren't going to this place. Another rule I was surprised is they try to keep business limited so you cannot bring out a bunch of papers, laptop, etc... The only papers you can hold would have to be a newspaper or a book. Once seated, the service is impeccable. Extremely polite and not overbearing. They knew when we were engrossed in conversation and didn't interrupt. I had the lump crab cake for dinner and it was without a doubt the BEST! I lived in Virginia for five years and went to college at George Washington so I'm quite familiar with East Coast seafood and I can honestly say the lump crab at the Metropolitan Club is the BEST! I could go on about this place but simply put, if you have the opportunity to go, don't pass that opportunity up for what will end up being one of the greatest dining experiences of your life.
