Pork plate with beans and slaw.
    Scott P.

Out of the way family restaurant is nicer inside than it looks when you pull up. Bbq was excellent as were the sides. Ribs were as good as any I have ever had. Three homemade sauces were not the best ever but not enough to lose a star. Order at the counter, grab a seat and the bring your food to the table quickly. Very nice staff helped a lady get up from her seat. Would loved if the served a piece of bread with the plate. They were out of the Mac n cheese-- I'm guessing that is because of how good it is...

I ordered a brisket plate so I could try a couple sides. Pricey for a lunch, but...brisket was cooked perfectly! Asked the girl who took my order what sides she would get and she suggested potato salad and hash brown casserole. Potato salad was great! But hash brown casserole was kind of bland. The spicy, sweet pickles were delicious! For take out, they gave me a small container of Sweet Baby Ray's which was fine, but I would have appreciated some small containers of their sauces that were on the tables. Overall will take the family back!

Out of the way is ok. This is a great spot for BBQ. I had the porksteak dinner with 2 sides. $17.oo bucks. Pork steak was cooked perfect, not to Smokey. Mac n cheese was seasoned well. Not from a box. Potato salad was mustard style with plenty of celery. They offer 3 kinds of house sauces. I liked all of them. Texas cake was a great compliment to this dinner. I will be sure to go back soon. I feel like I don't need to drive to STL for good BBQ now. The dinning room and new outdoor area is newly remodeled. The folks working were very friendly and helpful.

My wife and I were visiting my niece, and on our way out of town we came across a little BBQ spot…read morecalled Sugar and Smoke. It's a neat-looking place--nicely decorated, inviting, and full of that good smoky aroma that hits you as soon as you step inside. We were welcomed immediately, told to sit wherever we liked, and our waitress followed us over to take our drink orders right away. My wife ordered the meatloaf special, and while I teased her for choosing meatloaf at a BBQ joint, I ended up going with the Smoked Reuben. They brought her an entire meatloaf, along with green beans and mashed potatoes. I'm not exaggerating--this loaf easily could have fed three people. It was so good she nearly hurt herself trying to finish it. She almost made it through all the green beans, too, but I managed to snag the last one--and it was delicious. Then came my Reuben: a massive, five-layer monstrosity. I actually asked the waitress whether they made it that way just to impress me (since I had announced upfront that I'm a bit of a Reuben snob, lol) or if all their Reubens are like this. She swore they're all made exactly the same. You've got to see the photo. The marbled rye was sturdy and didn't collapse under the weight of two layers of thinly sliced smoked beef and a thick layer of juicy, tangy sauerkraut. I'm a kraut lover, so I really appreciated how generous they were. The house-made Thousand Island-style sauce tied everything together perfectly. In the nearly 17 years I've been posting on Urbanspoon, Zomato, and now Yelp, this Reuben easily sits in my top three--maybe even my #1. The smoky flavor made it unique, and I loved it. My only regret was not being able to finish this monster of a sandwich--it was delicious but messy, and I went through a handful of napkins. A lovely lady came out to ask how I liked the Reuben and introduced herself as one of the owners. (I apologize--I've forgotten her name!) My only suggestion would be to keep the meat thinly sliced--shaved would be even better--and maybe offer a half portion at a lower price. As it was, I could barely touch my perfectly cooked French fries. To top off the experience, my wife ordered the bread pudding. She has a "gold standard" bread pudding from years ago that she compares all others to, and she said this one was just as good, if not better, than her all-time favorite. I wish we had a Sugar and Smoke closer to home, because it would absolutely be a regular stop for us. It's so refreshing to find an establishment that cares this much about its food and its customers.

My research brought me here to Pappy's. I'm very glad it did. Ambiance starts with a line out the door, literally. You slowly shuffle down a long hallway full of Pappy's memorabilia. Then you make it to the ordering counter, order, and find a table. The dining room is huge, plenty of tables, with a full complement of sauces on each table. The service people at the counter were friendly, and so were the people delivering the food. The food came out quick and hot and delicious. We had baked beans and potato salad for sides, and they were pretty solid. Nothing show-stealing, but no complaints about them whatsoever. And of course, we got the ribs. Tender, juicy, a nice bite and chew, a decent bark, just a really wonderful rib. Better than any St. Louis style rib I've ever had back home in Florida. Other states, hard to say, the jury's out, but in that moment, I was eating a five-star rib. So good. We also got a 1/4 pound of the Burnt Ends. Usually, burnt ends are the king of meats, but I think we've entered the phase of America, where they're just another variety of meat and not necessarily upper echelon anymore. That being said, these were pretty ok. Should have gotten more ribs. Overall, Pappy's was pretty wow. Great local spot with a lot of pride and history, excellent ribs, I will definitely try to come back next time I'm in town.

It's not hard to see why The Food Network rated Pappy's as the "#1 rib joint in the country", as this place is next level bbq. You can smell the bbq from down the street and it will instantly make you hungry, even if you just ate... The place has the "cool bbq joint vibes", the employees are ultra-friendly, and it's fair/reasonable priced based on the quality of the food (runs between $40-50 for two people). Strongly recommend getting ribs, but their smoked chicken and turkey are outstanding as well. I didn't love their original bbq sauce (it was too thick and sweet with a heavy molasses flavor), but the hoodoo spicy sauce was out of this world. I would put Pappy's up against some of the other big named bbq joints in the country and they'd hold their own... Definitely worth the stop when in STL.

We were on a tight schedule, so we got it takeout. We got a combo platter to share, and everything was really good. Pretty standard meats. One stand-out, though, were the smoked wings. I totally recommend those. Just enough smoke flavor, tender and fall of the bone, these were excellent wings. As for what really set this place apart, it was the sides. Extra special, above and beyond sides. Pit Beans with Smoked Bacon that were so perfect. Softer than whole beans, but more bite than refried beans. Just the perfect balance, and with nice, hearty chunks of that bacon. And then, the White Cheddar Cracker Mac. You could absolutely taste the white cheddar here. Very unique compared to everywhere else's mac. And they used shells, so inside most shells was a nice little pocket explosion of that cheddar. And if that wasn't enough, it was topped with crumbled butter crackers that added a pop of crunch and salt that really made this my favorite mac 'n' cheese of all time. I'm not kidding. Also, side note, not sure if this will work for you, but at the takeout station, I asked for one of each sauce, and they gave me two of each! Astounding customer service. I kept most of them and am still using them to this day. Overall, the unavoidable cycle of life for good BBQ joints is be good, open more locations, open too many locations, become bad. That's just the way it goes. But right now, Salt + Smoke is still in the be good phase. I was very happy and would definitely come back.

Fall off the bone meat, plenty of different sauces to try, fun drink options. What we ordered: Big Muddy - 10/10 had brisket and smoked sausage in it. Had to add more horseradish sauce to it but that's just my preference. Brisket Plate - 9/10 brisket was delicious but knocking off a point because the sides were...ok. Coleslaw had NO flavor just like mush and the Potato salad was nothing to write home about. Needed more flavor. Brownie pie slice: 10/10 moist and crumbly crust. I want an entire pie! Service: There was no one there when we arrived so we had no experience with any wait time. Just went right up to the front to order our meals and they chopped the meat up right in front of us, placed on a tray on top of the counter and we took it to the register to pay. Self service and self seating establishment. The lady at the register was very nice and happy. No complaints there! She was interested to know where we were visiting from and how we liked the food. Ambiance: this place looks cool! With hints of retro vibe inside! The ceiling says the name in a cool work of art. Plenty of seating inside and outside. Final review: Yes! You order at the counter, which was easy, and then pay at the end of the line. The cashier was super helpful and offered recommendations on sauces and offered pickles or jalapeños for my To Go order. I ordered the Big Muddy sandwich which came with brisket, sausage, lettuce and pickles. It was also supposed to have horseradish and bbq sauce, but it did not. Maybe because it was To Go? The brisket was sliced right in front of me, but it was bad. It looked tender, but it was supper fatty and could handle be chewed. I spit most of it out. The problem was probably a bad cut of meat and not the smoking, but they still served it to me. The sausage was great, but only had a couple of little slices. I added some of the sweet sauce which was very good. I chose the beans for my side. Fine, but nothing special. A little dry, so I added sauce to help it go down. Then they had some local soda option, so I passed on an overpriced drink. It looks like there are more local options in the area, I would try somewhere else if ever back in this area.
