Sooooo we make this trek all the time mainly for the frog legs but always get hot dogs also. Also they have a sweet older gentleman that is like a maitre D & personal waiter. I'm so mad I did not get his name. He was awesome. When we walked in, he asked us if we wanted a table he walked us to the table, pulled the chairs out. He came back and checked on us. Even noticed that I got a shake & immediately came back with a spoon for me. BTW that Butterscotch Praline Shake was top notch! Get it! And his awesome service wasn't just for us. He did this for everyone. I am sure there is no way you can get this kind of service in the summertime because you can barely move in there. So I don't wanna let the secret out. But I hate when people gatekeep, So if you wanna try this location of Nathan's come in the wintertime. Parking right out front! For my family coming from Suffolk County to Brooklyn it's worth the trip! It's only 44 miles away but NY traffic it took us 1 hr 45 minutes to get back home. Ridiculous, but worth it! A Ripper: otherwise known as a "Deep-Fried Hotdog". Three plain and simple words, but when…read morecombined, they are nearly pornographic. At least they are for me. Rutt's Hut has been on my punch list for a long time. Actually NJ fried Hot Dogs have been both from Rutt's and from Hiram's over in Ft. Lee. I got to Hiram's and today was my luck day to get a shot at a Ripper. Rutt's is a bit off the beaten path and is down a meandering pothole filled road in a very industrial feeling part of town surrounded by wooded areas. It seems like it would be a better place for a serial killer body dump than a Hot Dog vendor but it's been there since 1928 so it must be doing something right. There is a large, private, and free parking lot which is a huge bonus in my playbook. The building looks like it is in disrepair. There are 2 areas to eat here. A door to the left seems to be a pub/bar with sit down service and then there is the right side that I went to which is a stand up, indoor counter where you can get in and out very quickly. This is a cash only spot so come prepared. Get to an open counter worker, give them your order, and pay when they hand over the goods. I was a little intimidated when I walked in because it was clear that everyone else in the place understood the ordering routine and knew the menu (there are quite a few other items you could order other than Rippers). I stood in a corner like a potted plant for about 10 minutes and watched what others did when they walked in before I figured out the process. It's pretty simple but I did not want to screw up Rutt's world order by doing something stupid. The 3 Rippers I ordered were good (but not best in class for me). The one I liked the most was the chili cheese dressed Ripper because the chili was actually quite tasty. On the counter are large containers of brown mustard and almost-fluorescent yellow relish. People seem to love the stuff. It was a bit like sweetened sauerkraut for me and the color of it makes me think it is either radioactive or seasoned with antifreeze. I would be happy going here again but I can't say that my Rippers were anything special. I might ask for them to be a little overdone next time to add a bit of texture. What I did like about Rutt's was the history, the dilapidated building, the simplicity of the menu, the naming of their dogs as "Rippers", and the fact that it felt like I was eating among real NJ natives that knew exactly what they were there for. Experiencing local culture doesn't get much better than that.

The tots were a nice side to pair with your meal. There's nothing like some hot dogs and burgers before/after drinking, so it's a smart pairing being next to all the bars. Would I come here solely for the hot dogs and burgers? Probably not. But it works great together with PDT.

The crif is pork and beef, New Yorker (all beef) and veggie option. I did a New Yorker (all beef) $4.75 with sauerkraut ($0.75) and the Spicy Redneck which featured a bacon wrapped crif dog with chili, coleslaw and picked jalapeños. Both satisfied the hot dog craving I had. There are also tater tots and burgers available. The bread was a bit stale, hence the 3 stars and the bun split on my New Yorker making it messy to eat. The woman behind the counter was friendly and suggested I try the dog featured this month- featuring a fried pickle or the Tsunami which has teriyaki sauce and pineapples. I would stop here again if in the area, but for basic dog a cart will hit the spot.

You can pay .75 for things like chili and cheese. The buns were soft. The dogs seemed a bit small but it's a great snack. The unexpected MVPs were the juices! We got one pineapple and one papaya and they were so tasty!! Sweet but not overly sugary. Our favorite is the pineapple but I would try the papaya too if you can. They have standing tables outside.

I went for one filled with gooey mozzarella--so satisfying--and loved how it still kept the nostalgic corn dog look. There are over a dozen creative configurations, including versions with potato cubes or rice cakes, each with its own quirky appeal. Once you choose your dog, there are 2 more steps: pick a dry topping (I chose cinnamon sugar, which added a sweet-savory contrast) & finish it off with sauces from a lineup that includes ketchup, mustard, gochu hot sauce, and sweet chili. My only wish is that there was actual seating (it's more of a grab-and-go spot) & the wall being wide open made it feel a bit drafty. Still, the food is worth it. Definitely a fun East Village stop if you're craving something indulgent & out of the ordinary.
