Sushi was pretty basic and hotel priced. Fish was shaved thin and what I would describe as grocery store type sushi priced at high end restaurant pricing. Service and ambiance were good. Recommend going off site for a better sushi selection. read more

My wife and I did an anniversary dinner at Stevenson's Library and it was so good we changed up our plans so that we could come back again two days later. The food and service are both top notch. Absolutely recommend the Lobster Dynamite appetizer as well as the Volcano, Ocean, and River maki rolls, and the Tiramisushi dessert. read more

We stopped in for a cocktail at the bar while waiting for our reservations at another restaurant down the street. We didn't eat the food here so I can't attest to that but the cocktails were good. I had a glass of wine that did not disappoint. We agreed that it didn't feel like a sushi restaurant but more like a steak place. It was hard to reconcile sushi with the overall feel of the restaurant. Don't get me wrong, I hear the food is amazing but it's not the vibe you'd expect. The restaurant is beautiful! So well done with attention to detail. The menu felt limited. I was with a vegetarian and her options were basically two items. The waitress was actively chewing gum while talking to us. It really turned me off. Two small pieces of tuna nigiri were $15. You can get better for cheaper at other places. This is located in the Grand Hyatt Kauai where we have been staying. My husband and I loved the ambiance with the dark wood and books, gives a different vibe than most restaurants we went to on Kauai. The service was fine but they asked almost immediately after we sat down what we wanted to order which we hadn't even ordered our drinks. We started off with the edamame which was good. We then got the hamachi sashimi which melts in your mouth it was incredible. We also got the Ikura nigiri which was probably the best we've ever had, we ordered a second one! We then got the spicy tuna and Kazan maki rolls. The Kazan roll was incredible, the spicy tuna was good but definitely would order something different next time. The food was good but nothing special, as others have said it is overpriced but part of that is you're eating in a hotel on the water. The place itself is gorgeous in one of the most beautiful hotels in Kaua'i. Unfortunately the service wasn't very great. The host was slightly rude and our server was very, very difficult to track down. The bartender was mostly friendly, but was getting impatient with the couple sitting next to us. $30 PARKING - HEAD's UP They used to offer the hotel lot free to the public, now it's paid. Our dinner was a bit of a train wreck (waitress forgot to put our order in) so it took 90min - and resulted in a $30 parking fee! The restaurant is fine but not good enough for that kind of surcharge. read more

Went here for my birthday and this was my 2nd time here. I was very disappointed by the service. The server was very rushed and she didn't give us a warm welcome. She wasn't really around, the workers that were dropping off drinks and food didn't look happy where they were not approachable. The only people that were nice was the hostess. The food was good but because of the ambiance we didn't want to stay longer. We were still hungry and could've order more but decided to leave, especially for the high price point I would've except better service. Very disappointing. Classic, old world environment with rich, dark woods and large bar. Beautiful view over the garden area out to the ocean. Our bartender, George, was friendly, professional and attentive. He made very tasty mango martinis and a nice dusty martini. Sushi is the primary focus of the menu and it definitely exceeds expectations. The fish is fresh and plentiful and the rolls are a perfect blend of flavors. Then there is dessert, Tiramisushi. Chocolate bliss with a creamy, melt in your mouth texture. Definitely a must have. We also tried the matcha cheesecake which also melted in your mouth with a nice clean, green tea taste. Always a highlight of our Kauai visit. read more

Enjoyed a beautiful dinner here with a pleasant view of the ocean from the hotel resort. Staff was friendly and courteous. The environs were warm and inviting, as well. The menu was small but the selections were all enjoyable. My favorites included the lobster dynamite and sushi pizza. Inventive plays on classics which tasted surprisingly good! I can't speak enough about the staff here. They accepted my last minute reservation even though they were fully committed and even managed to get an ocean view, as well. Absolutely terrible customer service. Attended for my parents 50th wedding anniversary, made a reservation, and hour after our reservation time had passed, our group was asked to leave after we expressed frustration with the entire situation. Completely ruined my parent's 50th wedding anniversary. Never come here for anything. Sushi was subpar, customer service was absolutely horrendous, reservations and origination was worse than customer service. Fire the manager, train his boss, train his boss, train his boss. Altogether absolutely terrible experience. I hope for the better of this hotel that better training of people take place who can manage a poorly staffed poorly equipped restaurant in a resort/hotel. read more

Very good. We ordered a wide variety of sushi and a couple of the sushi pizzas... plus the Samurai Mule. The food was tasty. Our table agreed the sushi pizzas are a "must." Minor grievance... asked the server to guide us and tell us if we ordered too much. We ended up with waaaaay too much food for six people. Had to take home multiple to-go boxes. So yeah. A trust issue there. But the experience was good. The "library" is great. Would be interested to know how they selected books for it. Would be better if they actually used RLS books or books from his era. But that's nitpicking. read more

Ocean view was great, sushi and service were abhorrent. First of all, no service. Ordered ~$150 in sushi and drinks and server never came to our table once while checking in on other tables. Mediocre sushi rolls at best. Rice was clumped and at times pungently sour. The "Kawa" river roll was unseasoned, and had a rough, slimy consistency. You would need either a lot of wasabi or drinks to make these passable. read more

This restaurant is located in the Grand Hyatt and accessible through the lobby. It's very nicely decorated and spacious. We ordered a couple rolls and drinks. The sushi was amazing. I had the chirashi don and it was really good. The ikura was dressed with a special soy sauce so it was nice to have it different from the norm. The only reason, I'm knocking 2 stars off was because the service was not the greatest. It took forever to get the server's attention and once we got out meals, the busboys tried to take our plates despite us still eating from it yet they didn't want to take the menus. Stevenson's Library is one of the house restaurants in the Grand Hyatt in Poipu, a very expensive hotel, so I booked a dinner there with some trepidation. The dinner menu here is quite limited, and some items are stupid-expensive, like $8 for a tiny bowl of miso soup, or $8 for edamame, which other restaurants give you for free, and weren't even that good here. So, I just ordered a few items from the nigiri sushi menu. I had the akami (bluefin tuna), hamachi (yellowtail jack), unagi (broiled eel), ebi (shrimp), and the hotate (scallop). The sushi was excellent, and the pieces were large. They also correctly included the small smear of wasabi between the rice ball and the fish, which is not always done. While the food was good, the service was a bit rushed. One star off for the snobby demeanor of our server who barely cracked a smile and the busser who snatched my plate away while I was still eating, which always irritates me. read more
