Waitress Tori was so sweet and provided excellent service. We have a baby and she was understanding about needing to bring food out quickly. Park in self parking at the Hyatt and get validated with hostess. Free parking! The quality of fish being served is exceptional. The nigiri omakase was so yummy and reminded me of being in Japan. Melt in your mouth, so freaking delicious. You can't go wrong with black cod butterfish. Even my 1 year old loved it with a bowl of rice. My husband is still talking about Smoker and the Rye cocktail. Rainbow roll with real crab was also so, so good! Brother has uni and said it was just like his fav spot in Los Angeles serving Japanese uni. Staying at the Grand Hyatt and wanted to try a meal at the hotel. Saw sushi and whiskey and couldn't pass it up. Made an online reservation through Open table and came in the second day of my trip. Ordered the Sashimi Moriawase with the Japanese Whisky flight. Fish was fresh and tasty but nothing particularly special about the meal. Maybe not as much of a Japanese whisky guy (enjoy more bourbons/ryes) but did enjoy the Yama 8 over the Umiki and Kurayoshi 12. Service was attentive and the library is a fun setting with spectacular ocean views. It is quite pricey and what I would expect from a hotel restaurant. Nothing that bad but nothing that amazing either. Would probably skip next time around but the views are awesome! read more

For the price it should be a lot better. First of all I had reservations and I arrived on time and had to wait 40 minutes for a table. The ambience is wonderful outside not so great inside. Inside is very loud and high top tables are uncomfortable. Service was mixed slow but good. I was impressed how quickly the busers removed the dirty dishes from the table and how the were constantly refilling the water. The sushi service was slow. The rolls were a mixed bag. The rainbow roll was very good and well made. The California towered dry and not very flavorful. The lobster dynamite was amazing. I highly recommend ordering this. I would give this a 3.5. I love the idea of this place but it struggled with execution. The cocktails weren't well balanced (and for the price, you expect better). The fresh fish Omikase was good. Yes, for our 11 year Wedding Anniversary, we booked our Anniversary dinner at the Stevenson's Library and it was pure Gold. I, was dressed in my finest Aloha shirt. My wife, had on a dress that I KNOW no Library has witnessed before (and damn did she look Good in it). Shortly after arriving for our reservation time, we were promptly seated at a table front and center with a view of the entire room. We were warmly greeted, had our glasses filled with water and given time to look over the menu. Of course, we started the night off with a bottle of wine which was placed table side in an iced wine bucket. To spice things up... No we didn't go looking for a copy of 50 Shades of Grey or Haunting Adeline in the Libraries collection... But we did order a plate of Shishito Peppers and those baddies were all the Heat we needed in that moment. From there, some of those most beautifully plated sushi rolls I have ever seen. The color, the detail, the presentation... The smile on my face was caused by pure Umami Overload. Of course, you know we continued on and got our Nigiri on! A little Kanpachi (Amberjack)... A little Sake (New Zealand King Salmon)... And let me tell you.... The fish was like butter. Of course, we were there celebrating our Anniversary, so a beautiful Mango Panna Cotta was brought out complimentary of their Pastry Chef and let me tell you... It was perfectly, perfect. A hidden gem. We really couldn't believe how delicious the sushi was here! We loved the rolls we ordered- including the chefs special for the night, a California roll, and the volcano. The edamame has a wonderful flavor, with its Hawaiian salt and chili oil. Yummmm! We enjoyed our cocktails, and I don't think you could go wrong with any on the menu. Sat at the bar for a late night bite and really really enjoyed my time there. First off the sushi was astoundingly fresh (however that's expected since it's Hawaii) and really really good. Also surprisingly the dessert was delicious. The bartenders were really nice and attentive but also not weirdly hovering around. While I didn't get to see much of the restaurant since I was seated at the bar, from what I could see it's a beautifully decorated restaurant. While staying at the Grand Hyatt, we decided to celebrate a birthday with sushi at Stevenson's Library. From the outside the restaurant looks like a stuffy old library. But inside the ceiling doors let in abundant natural light. We were seated on the balcony with sweeping resort and ocean views. Absolutely stunning. As a group of five, we ordered a bunch of rolls and some nigiri. The menu clearly labels gluten free which made it really easy for me to decide what to order. I personally had the Rainbow and a modified River roll. They were delicious with the fish very fresh tasting. They even brought GF soy sauce. We split multiple desserts, two of which were gluten free. The mango panna cotta was so amazing! The server was super kind and brought one out with a birthday candle. Overall service was great! Thought this spot would be a bit overrated given it's in a chain hotel, but the sushi was truly incredible. The specialty salmon roll may have been one of the best I've ever had, and the hamachi and ono were also quite exceptional! The drinks weren't the best and I asked for an old fashioned and they definitely gave me whiskey on the rocks but would come back for the fish. Ambiance was okay, a bit more corporate but if you get tucked into one of the corners it could be cool. Bar seating honestly might be the best! The atmosphere is special with the wood paneled library design, nautical decor, exposed wood beams, soaring ceilings, intimate warm lighting-- it's a lux but comforting vibe. The food was all outstanding-- the ono and king salmon sashimi was cut generously thick and tasted super fresh, while the sushi pizza and rainbow and volcano rolls were so flavorful and delicious. We've been to Stevenson's Library at the Grand Hyatt in Kauai many times, probably our 20th visit, and it never disappoints. This time we started with the takosu sunomono which was okay, nothing special, and the edamame with Hawaiian chili which was awesome, perfect level of salt and just the right kick without needing any soy sauce. The miso soup was incredible, real miso broth with just the right amount of tofu, seaweed, and kombu. The star of the night was the Stevenson's Lobster Dynamite. The presentation caught us off guard, it was beautiful and packed with food, definitely worth the price. The mix of scallops, crab, dynamite sauce, and eel sauce had that perfect balance of savory, sweet, and salty, so good we immediately ordered a second one. The black cod was tasty but not something I would rush to get again compared to the dynamite. For rolls we had tekka, kappa, spicy tuna, kai, kazan, and kawa. All were fresh and generously filled, but the kazan (volcano roll) was the clear favorite and we ended up ordering three of those. Great kick from the jalapeno and spicy tuna, balanced perfectly by the dynamite sauce. We finished with otoro and uni sashimi. The otoro was buttery and melted in my mouth, and the uni had that perfect ocean flavor and richness. Drinks were a mix. The Sunburst and Strawberry Twist mocktails tasted like watered down soda with a splash of syrup and I would not recommend them, but the Hawaiian Banana Split mocktail was decadent, thick, and exactly what you would hope for. Service overall was good. The hostess and bar staff were warm and friendly, though our main server seemed a bit rushed or maybe just busy with a big party. Still, everything came out timely and the vibe stayed welcoming. Every trip to Kauai we make sure to eat here and this visit reminded me why. We followed that up with a few different sushi rolls, and ended up ordering one more after because they weren't super big. Been here only twice in my life and this review is based on the second time. I thought the first time I came here was a 4 or 5 star experience, but this time was a 3 to 4 star experience at best. I was super excited to bring my family here, but it was underwhelming overall. For the price we paid, I thought the portions of the food and drinks would've been a little more. We ordered a lot of food and was actually not full at the end. The best thing we had was the lobster dynamite. Everything else seemed "regular". We also didn't want to order multiple drinks as they were pretty pricey. I did like the various selection of drinks though. As for the food again, it was tasty, but again, small portions. Ambiance was great as we love that type of setting. Service was good, but could've been better by our direct waitress. We noticed we were looking for her more often than we should've been. The host and bussers were great though. I was on the fence between 3 and 4 stars, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt this time. I've officially reached the annoying "sushi snob" status after coming here. Having multiple "best sushi ever" spots back home, I came in with low expectations knowing it couldn't possibly compete and yet somehow we were still disappointed. You know the sushi is low quality when the chef's smother it with sauce on top and everything becomes mush and overwhelmed with mayo flavor. It's to cover up that what they're selling is simply conveyor belt grade mediocrity. The rolls fall apart as you try to eat it as well. Along with the expense of this meal? It's easy to visualize the staff in the back all laughing in the kitchen after their shift at how us silly tourists are actually paying for this. I think we've finally learned our lesson to not eat sushi at a resort. I will say, the seared Salmon Nigiri (Sake) was quite melt-in-your-mouth delightful and the hosts were very nice and welcoming. I got the vibe that the waitresses couldn't care less and seemed to have a negative attitude towards young families. It seemed like they didn't want to wait on us at first and were very quick to get us out. Ambiance was meh. Felt like a sports bar. If you want sushi, try to find something local or go to the Kauai Poke place next door to satisfy your fresh fish craving. Who knows? You might save enough money for another Hawaii trip. read more

My favorite reviews to write when I get surprised at a place being better than expected so I'm delighted to write on Stevens's Library. Before going I had my doubts because of the disconnect of a library themed sushi restaurant but somehow it works. I suppose if you combine great food with fun and dedicated staff you will always have a winner. The chef has roots with Nobu and it's clear some menu items are inspired from there. We enjoyed every dish so much we came back our second night at the Hyatt to try more. If you are staying anywhere on Kauai it's worth a drive over and if you live here it's a great spot for any special event or if you just need a treat. All the seafood was remarkably fresh, highlights of our meals included the Lobster Dynamite, the Moriwase sashimi and all the Nigiri. The Ikura is marinated in their house made shoyu (soy sauce) so the flavor was savory and unique and the Uni was the best I've ever had in Hawaii. Their wine list was also a pleasant surprise with great deals too. Special shout out to our server Ashley and assistant manager Shane who both are charming, knowledgeable and only enhanced the experience of life affirming food. We can't wait to come back. read more

My sister ordered the sushi pizza and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was; the salmon was perfectly medium rare and succulent. I don't usually like cheesecake but the matcha tiramisushi was delicious although the name is a little misleading; absolutely nothing to do with tiramisu. The texture was perfect and the flavor of the chocolate surrounding the filling was excellent. I would order a side of extra raspberry sauce to go with it. Came here twice while staying at the Grand Hyatt. Made my reservations on Open Table. They're very understaffed. Last night we saw Brittney twice in an hour and ten minutes. We saw the guy taking up plates and refilling water more than her. They really pack in the bar and I think that's part of the problem. I saw people show up to the bar after us and get their rolls well ahead of us, we sat for 50 minutes without food. I think they should prioritize the tables that made reservations first to be honest. Also my husband asked Brittney the second time we saw her for a fresh napkin because he had used his to mop up spilled soy sauce and it never came so we just shared mine. The food is okay but I know the hole in the wall sushi spot back at home could taste just as good (if not better) with faster service. If you're seated inside, it becomes a bit more like a sports bar vibe inside.
