Dr. Kajita gave me my very first eye exam appointment as a child and has been my optometrist for the last 40 years. He gave my my first set of glasses as a child and patiently guided me through the process of adjusting to contacts as a teenager. I continue to see Dr. Kajita to this day, as he is wonderful, extremely knowledgable, kind, and thorough. I highly recommend Dr. Kajita to anyone who is looking for an optometrist who actually cares about the well-being of his patients. Dr. Kajita always makes sure my eyes stay in good shape and they have a nice variety of frames for glasses to choose from. I would give Dr. Kajita 10 stars if it was possible :) - He is excellent. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Kajita for 25 years. Always helps me find the most affordable and practical solution.

I very highly recommend Dr. Kajita. He and his staff are straightforward, helpful, and caring. They truly enjoy delivering a positive experience. Dr. Kajita and his staff are extremely knowledgeable and will also help you navigate your insurance plan. Again, highly recommend this business!! read more

Have been coming to Dr Kajita for about three years now. As other posters have mentioned, it's easy to miss his office amongst the storefronts of Lincoln Ave and also easy to be skeptical based on the interior. That being said, I have nothing but praise for Dr K; he is very personable and knowledgeable. Even though I have only been there for routine check-ups and contact refills, we usually end up talking about interesting eye and vision related topics. He is happy to explain to you the purpose and function of the various machines he is using while other optometrists would poke and prod your eyeball and send you on your way with nary a word of comfort or insight. I highly recommend booking your next eye exam with Dr Kajita! read more

I am a new patient. Dr. Kajita was VERY thorough with the exam and knowledgeable. All the optometrists that I have seen in the past would complete the exam, let me know my prescription and then send me off to choose a new pair of eye glasses before reviewing my coverage. I always ended up paying $200+ and have ended up with large frames that didn't fit my face (but looked nice) or slid down my nose all the time due to the optometrist rushing to see the next patient or trying to make a profit of the expensive eye wear. Your doctor should review with you the type of frame that fits your face and / recommend a frame per the usage needed per your prescription. As soon as the exam was done, Dr. Kajita reviewed my insurance coverage with me and told me to stay within my budget and to not select $300+ brand name frames. He recommended a light frame since I will only use them when reading / behind the computer. The office is outdated and could use a touch of bright colored paint (my first impression) but don't let that fool you. You'll receive high quality care here and the staff is friendly. They have a small section of eye wear but I am sure you will find something that you will like. I personally prefer a small variety to choose from because I get overwhelmed when there are too many options and take even longer to make a decision. I am so happy that I choose him as my doctor. Excellent care, knowledge, experience, attention to detail, close to transportation, great hours and frame selection. Thank you doc! read more

Best optometrist in the city, I hope he never retires. Dr. K. is very personable, very helpful, and never in a rush. Never pressures you into anything, and his prices are reasonable. Gave me freebies on the way out, and even wrapped my old glasses in a protective cloth so they wouldn't get scratched up. Staff is friendly and had no trouble pulling up my insurance and taking care of all the back-end stuff for me. read more

Dr. Kajita has been my eye doctor for over 40 years. I always look forward to going to see Dr. Kajita. He has an excellent eye for finding the best frames to your facial shape and personal style. His caring attitude and attention to detail are reassuring when taking an eye test. Dr. Kajita's staff is professional and supportive. They go out of their way to make sure all your questions and insurance concerns are answered If you want a knowledgeable eye doctor with a great personality, then Dr. Kajita should be your optometrist! read more

Dr. Kajita is amazing! Very professional and honest!! He was extremely proper and thorough during the eye exam. Then he explain everything with detail about what he did and what was happening with my eyes. I got my glasses there although he didn't put any pressure whatsoever, you can buy somewhere else. It took me about a week to get used to the glasses but now they work perfectly! At the first try! They accepted my insurance without any problem. I called before going to ask if they worked with my insurance and they were very patient and helped me figuring it out. Dr. Kajita was very honest about pricing and he showed me the prices of everything I was getting and the discount I was getting through my insurance. I've never seen this ANYWHERE!! Usually, the rest of places give you an estimate and you never know how much you are paying! read more

I visited Dr. Kajita for the first time for an eye exam because I was having some vision problems. Dr. Kajita performed a thorough examination with modern equipment, was extremely personable and spent a significant time understanding my history, issues, concerns, and questions. He explained my situation how to take care of my eyes and options for now and what to expect in the future. He did not try to upsell me anything and in fact suggested i initially start out with simple Walgreens reading glasses first. Dr. Kajita's staff was friendly and his office was located in a convenient Lincoln Park location. Dr. Kajita has a very busy practice so make sure you schedule in advance. I will definitely use Dr. Kajita again. read more

First off- very easy to get an appointment scheduled, and they were nice about calling me ahead to remind me of my appt. When I showed up, I got seen right on time- no wait at all. A huge plus! Dr. Kajita then spent the next 30 minutes doing the most thorough exam and history that any eye doctor I've seen has done. Meticulous. Because he took his time, he found out a number of things that helped him give me great recommendations for how to address my eyes train headaches- again, something that no other optometrist I've seen took time to explore/ discuss. And to top it off, Dr. Kajita has a great personality- relaxed, friendly, inquisitive. Very lucky to have him in our neighborhood; will definitely keep seeing him. read more

Dr Kajita has been my eye doctor for over 10 years. He is very thorough and has been very cost savvy. He has also great frames and gave me always good advice for my sight ( contact lens versus reading glasses) he has been also seeing my children and truly enjoy his professionalism and kindness. read more

I went only because of these reviews and when I got there - I almost didn't go in. Not that it looked 'bad' - just just not sleek. But I sucked it up and went in and had the most amazing experience. They guy just knows what he's taking about and doing. I am wearing the best progressives right now that have revolutionized my life - not to mention contacts I was told I couldn't wear (lied to by another eye glass chain store place not too far away) - and got the right prescription which they didn't even get right. Dr. Kajita's office is super friendly and very low key. It seems a little too good to be true - but up to this point - I can attest that it is very good and will be back here if anything changes. read more

This is the second time I've gone to Dr. Steven K. Kajita's office for repair of my Ray Ban Sunglasses. This time I went in with replacement lenses I purchased from Ray Ban. I asked him to replace the scratched lenses as well are re-align the frames. It took over an hour to do and (here's the kicker) he did this for me AT NO COST. I tried to pay him for his service but he said since I bought the parts he was happy to help. I asked him for any services I could pay for to support a local business, as this is the second time he's helped me at no cost. We called my insurance and I his optometry services are covered so needless to say, he has a customer for life. Thanks again, Dr. Kajita! read more

I have been going to Dr. Kajita for 15 years for my eye care. He is very thorough and very patient with his exams. He takes the time to answer any and all questions. He'll even put new lens in old or custom frames not purchased through his practice. Dr. Kajita puts his patients first and not the hottest new frame. It's refreshing and rare to find an eye doctor that takes such pride as a sole proprietor in a world of lemming boutiques and chain stores. read more

Doc is great! I have been coming to him for over 20 years. He is a honest, hard working doctor that cares about his patients. If you're looking for someone that will take the time with you, he is your guy. read more

Dr. Kajita seems like a good doctor and he gave off the impression that he was invested in me as a patient. I am not sure he was able to resolve the eye issue that I had come in for though and will probably seek another opinion. He is also very meticulous which is good but it caused for a very long appointment. My main issue with the place is that the Receptionist is EXTREMELY rude. She is not friendly at all and comes across as uninterested and mean. She also was not helpful at all when I had questions concerning insurance and appointment times. When I was speaking with her when I first walked in, I could not believe how rude she was being- it made me want to immediately leave and find a new eye doctor. I was hoping to find a great eye doctor but the front office staff really turned me off from this place- they did not make me feel welcome or comfortable in the office. Dr. Kajita is doing himself a disservice by not having more customer service focused staff read more

I went to see this dr. recently because of all the rave reviews and because he takes my eye insurance. Ok, let me start by saying that the place is in need of major updating. If your gonna charge those kind of prices for subpar eyewear @ least spruce it up! Secondly, don't expect customer service to be GOOD from either Kajita or his staff who just sits behind their reception desk looking busy. There is absolutely no help whatsoever that I received UNTIL I ASKED FOR IT!!!! These folks here at this place of business have it down to a science on how to take your money and offer you the least bit of customer service possible. THIS IS STARTING TO BE THE NORM FOR ALOT OF BUSINESSES NOWADAYS!!!! SAVE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY AND GO ELSEWHERE! I'm honestly SHOCKED at all the great reviews! If you do decide to go and ignore what I've written...good luck! read more

I found Dr. Kajita through his yelp reviews and was very pleased with my experience at his office. He was very thorough and I could tell he cares about what he does and about his patients' eye health. He was also very aware of my insurance and didn't try to do anything extra that my insurance wouldn't pay for which I appreciated. My insurance also basically only covered the exam so he was cool with me ordering contacts online rather than through him. If you want a Saturday appointment I would call in advance because I had to wait about a month for mine. I would highly recommend Dr. Kajita! read more

Very good, reasonable prices and pleasant personality. My wife and I have been going to him for years and have never had a complaint.

Dr Kajita is great! I pretty picky with my eye dr's since the only ones I've had one since I was a teenager and a friend. Other then that, I've never been happy with my eye dr. Finally, I found one I love! Dr Kajita was attentive and was sure you understood everything. He even calculated best options for contacts/glasses. Highly recommend him. read more

I wish I could give Dr. Kajita more than 5 stars! He has to be one of the nicest, most accommodating and helpful doctors in the business. He worked with my crazy insurance and will fit me in between appointments if I have questions. I recommend him to all of my friends! read more

Dr. Kajita helped me out by finding a style of contacts to fit my eyes' curvature. Previous eye doctors kept prescribing contacts that never seemed quite right. Dr. Kajita explained that due to the shape of my eyes, a particular brand would work well. He was right, and I've been going back since. read more

This guy took his time with me..He was attentive, helpful..AMAZING!!!! Seriously, go to this guy!!! There was almost no wait, he was VERY thorough, and my contacts came in like two days after I was there. Love my contacts!!! Love the service!!! Love the doctor!!! Also, they REALLY work with you, your financial situation, and your insurance (if you have it) to give you the best deal. He tries to give you all the rebates he can. AWESOME!!!!! read more

It's really easy to get an appointment with Dr. Kajita . He takes a great deal of time with you and is completely honest about your vision needs. I have terrible eyesight and he was the first eye doctor who didn't try to rip with me off with talk of Lasik (he actually explained why it's not the best idea for me). He is sure to see what my insurance covers or doesn't and gives great advice to try and save me money. When it was time to select my glasses, Dr. Kajita was the one to choose my frames with me, not an assistant. His office uses prompt communication and has Saturday hours. I'm so sad that my insurance changed because his office no longer supports my plan. However, I'm trying to figure out my out-of-network benefits so I can still go to him. He's that great. read more

My family and I have been going to Dr Kajita for many years now. I can't deny that they need to put some money in a good renovation of the office but the expertise and knowledge that Dr Kajita has is bar none. Their frame selection is awesome and they usually come in within 2-4 business days of ordering them. We used to go to Wink Optical up the street and it never took less than 2-3 weeks to get our glasses in! If you want a good solid optometrist that knows his stuff and you aren't worried about the "look" of the office, then I would suggest Dr Kajita hands down! read more

I was having problems with the contacts prescribed to me by Pearl Vision and Costco Optical so a friend recommended I go to Dr Kajita, telling me he really takes a lot of time to explain everything going on with your eyes. She was right. Dr Kajita spent a lot of time testing my eyes, explaining what was wrong with the contacts I had, and why new ones would be better. I also mentioned I get very frustrated trying to keep my glasses clean, and he explained I could get lenses without a standard coating that makes glasses more susceptible to getting dirty. Why didn't my previous ophthalmologist tell me this? My new contacts and glasses have solved my problems completely. Very happy with the pricing as well. read more

Dr. Kajita is very thorough and I feel very fortunate to have found his office. It is simple, nothing fancy but he is down to earth and walks you through various insurance scenarios to help you understand what would be your best bet. Agree he is personable and knowledgeable. They are also open after 5 p.m. some days and on the weekends on Saturdays so that is very helpful for those of us who can't pop in during 8-5 business hours. read more

I'm a graphic designer/photographer and I was having a ton of eye strain, headaches, fatigue issues with some previous glasses that I got from a chain glasses store. And even as a first time patient, Dr. Kajita took his time diagnosing my issues with my previous glasses and found a great solution for my eyes. He is clearly much more knowledgable about prescribing glasses and diagnosing issues, he corrected my problems and I am very thankful for his expertise. I will be going back to him for any other eye issues in the future--it's just not worth going to someone who doesn't have as much experience and expertise. read more

I've been going to Dr. Kajita since college. He's is very friendly, a really good eye doctor and the glasses he carries are very stylish. Even if we ever move we would stil have him as our eye doctor. 5 Stars!! read more

Dr. Kajita was very professional and took the time to help me pick out glasses. I've never had an optometrist take that amount to time with a patient. Very personable and helpful. I will highly recommend him to everyone in Chicago who needs an eye doctor. Also, he has some great frames to choose from. Easy to get to his office from the Fullerton stop too! read more

My eye exam with Dr. Kajita was awesome. He's so relaxed and happily and unhurridly explained the basics and everything I asked about in a clear and non-pretentious way. He showed me the new contacts that have come out for astigmatism, and then pointed out that some people like to stick with what they have been using - doesn't matter either way (no pressure to buy new more expensive contacts!). He also priced out whether it would be cheaper for me to use my insurance towards frames or contacts. When he showed me glasses, it was the same relaxing, "no-problem" experience. He just pointed out what was what, answered my questions, and did not in any way try to pressure me. His office isn't totally sweet-looking, but for the low-key eye exam and no pressure experience, it was totally awesome. read more

I have been going to Dr Kajita for a number of years now and have always been very satisfied with his care. Even when I have had an unscheduled reason to contact him (the dog chewed the ear piece on my glasses, I was experiencing floaters, etc) he worked me in to his schedule. Although he does not have the extensive choice of frames that the larger chains have there are enough to find a suitable pair and, more importantly, the glasses work! I previously had gone to a national chain because it was near my office. My last pair ever from them was returned four times and still provided blurred vision and headaches. Never had this issue with Dr Kajita. Yes, the office is in a dated little strip mall and small but that is not why I want him to be the one to treat my eyes. I want to go to him for the quality of his work! read more

I recommend Dr. Kajita to the highest degree I could recommend any service professional. I ran by Dr. Kajita's office by accident several years back. I saw a pair of glasses in an ad featured in the window-front, immediately loved them and walked in and asked where they were and how much they would cost. Dr. Kajita himself advised me on the type of glasses that would work for my face, and could tell by sight whether the frame would overwhelm or flatter my face (especially as I have very bad vision and require special lenses to avoid the bottle-cap look). He does not try to up-sell the more expensive frames - quite the opposite, he will let you know if a particular pair of frames is more expensive and will recommend alternatives. He also worked with my coverage and did his homework on my insurance provider (I walked in not knowing who my employer used and what coverage I had) and what my insurance would and would not cover. This was again the service provided to me as a complete walk-in just to buy a pair of frames - Dr. Kajita did not require/request an appointment before I purchased the frames and treated me with the same care and time as he would a long-time customer (the best consultation I have ever received). My husband and I have since exclusively come to Dr. Kajita ever since. When I realized I had not renewed my eye insurance this past year, Dr. Kajita made a note to see what kind of discount he could provide me despite my lack of insurance. Also, following my husband's most recent eye appointment, I was casually browsing glasses while my husband was choosing frames. I mentioned out loud that I really liked a particular pair of frames, and made a mental note that I need to check my calendar and schedule an eye appointment of my own. By the time I came back for my own appointment a few weeks later, I (of course) had trouble recalling the brand and style of the frames I had liked. Lo and behold, Dr. Kajita, opened a shelf and pulled out the pair of frames with my name written on a note attached to the frames. Dr. Kajita is extremely accessible, attentive and conscientious with how he runs his business and he has obvious pride and knowledge in his profession and his customers. Similarly, every single member of his team is incredibly nice, low-key and accommodating. They are a perfect fit. The hours are extremely accommodating (open til 6 on weekdays and open on Saturdays). When I barely made it to the office unannounced before closing to pick up my glasses (Dr. Kajita was on vacation that day), Dr. Kajita's team of three was still there with smiling faces - they also have great pride in what they do. My husband and I are steadfast enthusiastic Dr. Kajita fans and recommend him without reserve. read more

This is my first pair of prescription lenses although I have previously had eye exams. I felt more comfortable going to an optometrist who has his own practice rather than a large chain and I think I made the right decision. Dr. Kajita seems very competent. He was very thorough and made reasonable suggestions. He helped with my insurance claim and did not try to oversell me. The staff is friendly and helpful too. read more

Been going to Dr. Kajita for ~10 years... He is fantastic. He spends a lot of time with patients... With Dr. Kajita, you get a small town experience (caring, compassionate, personal) in a large city! He also takes most insurances, which many places in chicago do not. read more

Dr Kajita was personable, friendly with very considerate reception staff. This was the most pleasant and complication-free eye doctor I've ever seen. He was the perfect combination of expedient, thorough, patient, and knowledgeable - basically anything you could ever want in an eye doctor. Perfect and already highly recommended to my family. read more

The staff is great and will call to remind you for appointments and when your contacts are ready. He is the best! read more
