I chose Stephen based solely upon Yelp reviews, and wow am I glad I trusted my fellow Yelpers. I had two dresses to have altered: a tea length bridesmaid dress and a floor length bridesmaid dress. Stephen started fitting me for the shorter dress first: The tea length dress just needed to be shortened to a bit above the knee- it is a beautiful dress that I already wore in the wedding. It would be perfect to wear to cocktail parties, I just found that tea length cut me off at a strange point on my legs. The alterations for this cost $35, and were much better done than one would get for a similar price at a dry cleaner. The hem was perfectly clean and even. The floor length dress, a halter with intricate ruffles, was much too long for me and too big around the bust. Stephen measured me with the heels I'd be wearing for the dress and made a point to check the hem very carefully and asked me questions about fit/length to make sure he was making the right notes and pinning in the right places. With significant alterations in the bust and length, the dress cost $65. The two dresses took less than two weeks to alter and they promised that if I found any errors, I was free to come back and make note of them and they would do their best to fix it for free. Thankfully, both dresses fit perfectly and I'll recommend Stephen the Tailor to any of my friends looking for a precise tailor who doesn't charge ridiculous prices. read more

Based on the great yelp reviews, I decided to get 2 pairs of pants hemmed and jacket sleeves shortened. The pants were hemmed about an inch too short and the stitching was not in a straight line; the hems were also clearly visible stitches when it was supposed to be blind. After the alteration, when I put the jacket on, the lining shows through the bottom and looks really dumb. The quality of work was so disappointing. I'm not sure if it was Stephen or another employee who did these alterations. The work was also completed several days late. read more

While maybe Stephen The Tailor is better at his work on suits, I have been left unimpressed by his work on my gown and some simple hemming on pants. I felt like part of the problem was that he and his staff were not up to date with current women's fashion trends. On my skinny jeans he hemmed the jeans so that the front was shorter than the back- think of a boot cut/flare jean where you want a slight amount more in the back to cover your heels. However, this is not "the look" with the skinny jean where the jeans are stopping at the ankle and NEVER does the back fall below the shoes. While these jeans have worked for the fall I now must go to get them re-hemed/altered to that I don't have a bizarre look where my skinny jeans have fall over my heels. This happened with both pairs of skinny jeans I took there. His work on my gown was better, however I felt it was overpriced for the very slight alteration made. read more

My dad has this jacket that belonged to his dad -- it's at least 60 years old -- that needed to be completely re-lined. Dropped it off here and was very happy with the result. They re-attached the original "JC Penney" label too. Reasonably priced, great work. This place is probably hard to find if you're driving. This guy is a moron. In fact, he should remove the word "tailor" from his sign and replace it with the term "person who can only do minor alternations." Last month, I brought him a pair of poorly fitting dress pants to see whether he could figure out why they were bunching up so strangely when I walked. His response was essentially some random BS whereby he informed me that the issue was "uncorrectable". Luckily for me, I immediately realized that he had no idea what he was talking about and went elsewhere to get a second opinion. (Ultimately, I took the same pants to Christoper Kim's and he was able to diagnose and correct the cause of the poor-fit ASAP.) read more

Hands down the best tailoring experience I've ever had. It's amazing how much better my suits look with just a few minor adjustments. The price was totally reasonable. They were able to give me a quick turnaround (1 week) for having two jackets taken in and two pants tailored. What's more, everyone was very nice and helpful. Excellent customer service. Wow. I've looked long and hard for a good tailor in this city without much luck. Went to Stephen and had 4 pairs of suit pants altered and each was spot on when I picked them up. His prices are very reasonable too, far better than the other places I went, which initially had me more cautious but sometimes you find people that are honest and good at what they do. I've mostly only had simple alterations, like hemming dresses, jeans, and suit pants. The quality was top notch. He does a great job hemming jeans, both with keeping the original hem and cutting them and hemming them. I find the prices moderate ($15-25 for a basic hem). read more

I've gone here twice for a simple hem on some yoga pants. The pants came out good and the tailors actually listen to you instead of just measuring and pinning where they think things should fall. The price is also reasonable. I'll definitely be back for future hems. The only downside is that they say they will call you within a week to let you know when your clothes are done but they didn't call me either time and I had to contact them a week later to check if my pants were done. read more

I went to Stephen's shop after reading various reviews that implied he could tailor dress pants for a modern fit. I dropped off about ten pairs of pants and was charged over $450 for the alterations (competitive pricing, not a point of contention in this review), waiting three weeks for them to be completed. The length on the hems are fine (though some pant legs look slightly different in length). However, he did not pay attention to my request to taper the legs. My dress pants now resemble bell bottoms and look ridiculous when I put them on with shoes for work. I will now need to go to another tailor to have them corrected, spending more money. read more

Stephen the Tailor is pretty great. The store is basic and no frills. My stuff was set to take a week and was available the afternoon of the pick up date. (This was a bit of the problem, as I was leaving town early for a three day weekend, but no crisis.) The most important part? Stephen did a beautiful job. I had a dress shortened, jeans hemmed and the waist of a skirt taken in. All three items were done very nicely. In particular, the premium denim jeans looked great.... he even hemmed them so they could be taken down a bit if they shrink in length after washing. All this for under $60. I'll take it. read more

I moved to DC 2 months ago, and I can say this is the BEST tailor I have ever had. I am extremely particular about my suits and shirts. My suits are tailored to perfection, my shirts look custom made. I am slim fit, and usually need to buy a size up in suits, then get them tailored. These guys can take a 200 macys suit, and make it look like a million bucks. Better, they have the cheapest prices I have experienced yet in DC. This is a small shop, they are extremely polite, and they will have my business as long as I live here. read more

I had a very unpleasant experience here. It took them 4 WEEKS to tailor two pieces of clothes. Never called, never apologized. My clothes are delayed without notification, they aren't properly tailored, and I paid $75 for having a skirt and a pants tailored. First of all, they never called me. They promised that they would give me a call within one week. I never received that promised call. After a week of giving my clothes to them, I went back to them and checked with them in person. They can't even find my clothes and again promised me would call me later that day, which they never did. They never called to tell me that my clothes are delayed. A week after that, I checked with them AGAIN. Finally, after two weeks, my two pieces of clothes are ready. They NEVER called to tell me when my clothes are ready or when my clothes are delayed. They never even apologized or offered me some kind of compensation. NOT EVEN AN APOLOGY. When I got my skirt and pants back, the skirt was fine, but the pants was still way too long. If it takes you two week, at least do a good job. Then I took the pants back to them and asked them to do it again. They did. But again, NOT EVEN AN APOLOGY FOR DOING A BAD JOB. And guess what, I got the pants back TWO WEEKS later. They NEVER called me. I had to check with them in person. So in conclusion, it took them 4 weeks to tailor my pants, without any kind of communication and compensation. If I could give a zero star, I would. Never going back there again and would advise everyone I know not to. I am really, really , really mad. read more

I would give this negative stars if I could. They are completely unprofessional, management is a mess, the tailoring takes weeks to complete, and the people at the front desk (Chris) is a nightmare to deal with. I dropped off suits to be tailored. I was told it would take a month because of backlog. Fine, I needed the suit tailored, I'm new to town. I go back in a month and the jacket is barely ready - I have to wait until the end of the day to pick up (only after I called the tailor 3 times that day to be told someone would let me know, but there was no one at the store but the actual man doing the tailoring who doesn't speak English very well). I was told to come back for the bottom part of my suit. I hear nothing. It has now been a month. I call them, I get busy tone, or voicemail. Finally reach this Chris guy again. He is rude AF. Hands the phone over to the tailor who's doing the actual work, apparently they lost my bottom part of the suit. I demand better service and Chris hangs up on me. I call back, busy tone, voicemail repeatedly. I am now out $200 for the tailoring on the top half, and another $200 for a lost suit skirt bottom. This place is horrible. Save your money, do not come here. read more

Hi, I just wanted to chime in here, since recently I've been wearing the heck out of the black suit I had tailored here. Off the rack it looked good; tailored, it looks like a million bucks. I've had two jackets altered by Stephen et al, both tightened in the belly, and one was effectively changed from a 42R to a 40R. The latter job included tightening across the shoulders, which seems like something one could easily screw up--and badly. They pulled it off; it fits great and looks great. That was an expensive job, but the price seemed fair. Stephen seems to be a very good fitter, if you know what I mean by that. But I can only speak for men's clothes. Also, I have several pairs of pants that I'm going to take to Stephen for hemming; he's cheaper than my local dry cleaner for that. I've been looking for a tailor in DC for a while and Stephen's my guy. He earned my trust and money. (And he's located near my barber, Puglisi Barbershop--also highly recommended--so that works out well for me.) Give him a small alteration job, and if you like the results, keep going back to him. Great service. I had some pant legs tapered, and it turned out I'd asked for them too skinny; they took out the taper a bit to where I wanted it, and didn't charge me anything for the fix. Took about a week each time for the tapering, though.. I don't frequent tailors, but I suspect that isn't the quickest, if you're in a time crunch. read more

Once while I was congregating with friends, Stephen called me to discuss alterations on a suit. Upon finishing my conversation with Stephen, my friends ask.... "Who was that?" "Oh, that was Stephen, my tailor." "What? You have 'a tailor?'" "Uh....yeah. Don't you guys?" "No." "Well, maybe you should. EVERY man should have a tailor of his own." I really like Stephen. He's a man of few words, but what he may lack in conversation, he more than compensates with his work; I've been impressed every single time. His small shop is located down a few steps from street-level in the English basement of a townhouse-like structure and doesn't have much in the way of frills and comfort, but it's always filled with clothing. And Stephen loves clothing, but not in the way most of us see clothing and say "Oh, that looks really nice!" No, Stephen admires clothing in the way a biologist or surgeon admires the human body: the craftsmanship, technique, construction, and fit. How all the cuts and stitches come together to create a coherent piece. Whether it's a vintage Oxxford bespoke suit--"Wow, this is very nice! Excellent fabric and well-built!"--or a cheap random shirt--"Oh... well.... I hope you didn't pay too much for this."--Stephen knows clothing inside and out. He told me he used to work for the Ralph Lauren MTM program in New York many years back, so I feel comfortable asking Stephen to perform any sort of modification to a suit, even a near total reconstruction. Regarding the fees Stephen charges, I think they're very appropriate: I've paid in the range of $60-$120 for jacket work, and $30-70 for pants work. The only somewhat negative thing I could think to mention is that the working time can be on the longer side, but considering the quality, I don't mind. It just requires a little foresight and planning. Five stars for the fellow third on the list of men I trust to touch my body, behind myself and my doctor. read more

Hey Stephen - when I say I need a dress done BEFORE AUGUST 7, that doesn't mean the morning of August 7 or the afternoon of August 7 - it means BEFORE. So, if I call to follow up on my alterations on August 5 and you tell me that you can't guarantee they will be finished on August 6 (even though I paid an EXTRA $30 FEE to have it finished BEFORE AUGUST 7), I am going to be super pissed. read more

I was very pleased with the work that they did on my wool winter coat. They fixed a tear in the back of the coat & replaced a pocket. I honestly thought that I would have to trash the coat, but decided that I would give this tailor a try. I dropped my coat off just before the Christmas holidays & told them that I was in no hurry. They gave me a two week time frame, but called me at the one and a half week point for pick-up. The coat looked great and the price for the repairs were very reasonable (lower than I anticipated). They were very pleasant and friendly as well. After reading the reviews for this business, I have concluded that customers were either extremely disappointed or extremely satisfied. Fortunately, I was the later. I plan on returning again for additional alteration needs. read more

After so many positive reviews I had to check the place out. I went once to get pants hemmed, and while expensive, they turned out fine. But what really soured me on this place was when I came again to get a jacket I bought online altered. The company that I bought the jacket from would reimburse me the alteration charges as long as I told them exactly what and how much the jacket was taken in. When I went in to Stephen the Tailor, they didn't want to tell me how much they were going to take in the jacket and from where. Basically, they wanted to withhold information related to a service I was paying them to do. It's as if you went to a mechanic to do work on your car, and he would do it but didn't want to tell you exactly what he did. There are places that are cheaper and have better customer service than than Stephen the Tailor. read more

Bottom line: Got a dress let out and the strap shortened for a wedding with very short notice. Everything went smoothly, looked great, fit as well as it could. Price was what I expected ($75 total). Details: I went to Stephen to alter a (too tight) straight cocktail-length polyester chiffon bridesmaid dress SIX DAYS before the wedding. In my naivety, I waited 3 weeks to get it altered, assuming that chiffon was impossible to let out and that maybe -- just maybe -- I could lose a few inches by the wedding. Let's just say I learned a valuable lesson on this one. I called them on a Friday afternoon and asked if it could be done and how much it would be. Their alterations start at $30, and the guy on the phone told me I'd probably be charged extra for a rushed order. I dropped it off Monday morning after a quick fitting. It was ready by mid-day Friday. Stephen essentially let out the lining as much as the chiffon would reasonably allow (which wasn't much, but made a big difference). He also shortened the decorative chiffon strap with lots of flower detail on the shoulder. Interestingly, the lining was $30 and the strap was $45 (I guess it was a more intricate job) but overall not a bad price for a job well done. read more

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GO HERE! They left a pin in my pants which cut my leg when I tried them on and the cut later got infected! And that's not all... 1. they messed up the inseams on both of my jeans and had to redo them. 2. They completely forgot to do one of my pairs of pants. 3. They ruined two of my pants by taking in the seat so much the back pockets were practically touching. A good tailor should communicate that while it is possible to take something in, it won't end up looking right. 4. I'm not sure Stephen speaks English. It was impossible to communicate with him. These guys don't care about how the clothes end up looking on you, they just do the work without thinking about it. read more

I found Stephen the Tailor on Yelp and with all of the excellent ratings, I decided to trust the future of my extremely expensive bridesmaid dress in their hands. When I got to the barely noticable store front and entered the room, I was immediately greeted by an extremely kind and welcoming group of men, working diligently on their projects at hand. The service was quick and efficient, which didn't keep me waiting around long. I brought in my dress with plenty of time in advance for the wedding I will be in. I tried on my dress and the tailor was sure to point out why he was pinning it the way he was in order to maintain the original style and fit. I came back in the store last week and with additional alterations that needed to be done, I picked up my dress today and it fit flawlessly. The alterations that needed to be done because of how much it needed to be taken in required basically deconstructing the dress and putting it back together. I am extremely satisfied with the final product and will definitely be coming back with some tailoring I will need done on a J.Crew suit jacket. read more

Took some pants in here to be taken in and he did an ok job. But then, I took in two maxi dresses to be hemmed. He did a horrible job on both, they were completely uneven, and when I showed him the problem, he agreed to redo it, and when I picked them up after the re-do it was still uneven.
