I think Stephen is going downhill a little bit. Lately not as precise as before and kind of expensive--though cheaper than others in DC. On one of my jackets he tried to even out the sleeves and I think he made it worse than before. I ended up taking that jacket to another tailor who fixed it correctly. Let's put it this way, I would bring things here that need minor work done. He does a good job with tapering dress shirts. I think I'd bring something a tad more challenging than a dry cleaner can handle but I wouldn't spend $700 on a suit that didn't fit quite right and trust them to make it look great. read more

Not sure if I had an off experience here, or the folks who are reviewing this place have no experience getting alterations done, or what. This place was absolutely terrible, both in terms of customer service and final work product. They put in a few, horribly visible, haphazard stitches - which came out after one wearing - to take in a dress, and then charged me an arm and a leg to boot. They charged me as if they had to take apart the seams on the dress to alter it (which would have been the proper way to fix this multilayer, lined garment), but all they did was fold over the material and sew it (badly) in place, leaving it a lumpy mess. The cons first: 1. He could have been a little friendlier. 2. I was told I'd get a phone call when my garments were ready and I didn't. 3. There was a chalk mark on one of my dresses when I got it back. 4. There was a loose thread on one of my garments that got caught in the zipper when I tried to put it on, but it was easy to snip and I'm not sure it wasn't there originally. 5. It cost a liiiiittle more than I was hoping it would, but nothing unfair. Summary of cons: tiny things that do not matter. The pros: 1. He did magic to my clothes. Seriously. I had two cocktail dresses and a pencil skirt taken in, and they are all perfect. He went above and beyond and everything looks better than I imagined it could. 2. I accidentally left an empty tote bag there and when I came to pick up my clothes, it was on a hanger next to my garments. 3. When I called to find out if my garments were ready, I was met with politeness and immediate assurance that all was in order. They even set aside my garments so that they were ready for me when I got there. 4. Results = definitely worth the price. Summary of pros: I will be back, Stephen! read more

I've had significant alterations to both a suit coat and slacks here, and have been pleased each time. They were not simple requests; my coat had to have the arms and sides reconstructed after a significant change in body type, and the rise in my slacks were lowered while preserving the overall fit. Despite challenging work that could well have ruined the suit if done poorly, it was accomplished with quality and speed. Entertainingly, it was the length of the aforementioned slacks that prevent me giving Stephen five stars--I need to get them hemmed just an inch further than they gave me. That said, I'm very pleased with the quality of service and speed of delivery, even when given particularly difficult jobs. read more

Came here with my girlfriend based on the stellar Yelp reviews to get her maid-of-honor dress altered. Several people here talk about getting bridesmaid dresses altered, so we figured this place was our best bet. Both people in line in front of us were complaining about their orders being ready despite phone calls saying they would be, which was a little alarming, but they actually did our job pretty quickly. The top part of the dress was too big and flat, and we were hoping to get it tailored to be a bit more flattering and better-fitting. Unfortunately, Stephen just seemed to pin it back to take out a uniform strip of material. Neither of us knows a lot about dresses, so we didn't know what should have been done, but when we got it back the dress is now tighter, but still flat and unflattering, loose in a few places and tight in others, which should have been clear to him when he was pinning it back. We're going to look for a more expensive tailor to try to salvage the situation, though I'm not sure how much more material they can take out. The people here seem friendly and experienced and everything, but I wouldn't go to them for nice dress alterations again. read more

At 4'11" and 97lbs, everything I buy to wear for work has to come to Stephen before they see the light of day. I've never been disappointed in the workmanship, turn-around time, or customer service by Stephen and the crew. Stephen has worked wonders on slimming sleeves, shortening pants and skirts, altering dresses to fit a small bust, and moving buttons on blazers -- all have turned out perfect. I was lured in by the yelp reviews, and came away about 700 dollars the poorer after Steven ruined a jacket I brought in. It had working button holes, and thusly had to be taken in from the shoulders (a job I obviously was required to pay a premium for). When I finally picked up the jacket, and I say finally because on top of the three week delay, the work was a week late, one sleeve was significantly shorter than the other, and both were far too short. In short (pun intended), a brand new blazer was ruined, and there was no recourse. On the bright side, for twenty dollars he seems capable of hemming the length on a pair of trousers, again assuming one is content to wait a month. However, the jeans I likewise had hemmed were pretty badly mangled and poorly stitched. I lament not just having gone to my local dry cleaner. read more

Hard to say it's as good as it gets only because I have never been to a tailor before. But I needed the bottom of my pants tailored because they were too long. I went there on a Saturday, got measured and it was a quick process. He asked if Friday worked to pick them up and I actually had to be at a party with these pants on Friday so I asked if Wednesday would work...worried me a little because i wasn't sure it they would be ready on time. I got a call Tuesday evening that they were done and it only cost 15 bucks (I was assuming it would cost more). I asked for cuffs at the bottom of my pants and they were done real well. I plan on coming back for my tailor needs and I recommend the place. Only difficult thing is finding the place but it's under stairs on 20th and I read more

I had a strapless bridesmaid dress taken in here and they did a great job patiently showing preliminary adjustments until I was happy. The dress looked great with only one try. I needed it in two days, and even though he was backlogged with all the graduation dresses and suits, he worked with me on my schedule and did the alterations I needed. It looked so much better. I've been going to these guys for 3 years, and it actually is the reason I made a yelp review. They are a great tailor at a great price. It's not fancy - but you can tell they've been tailoring clothes for a long time, it's their thing, and they are really good at it. Prices are super reasonable for being in downtown DC, and they are friendly, and always call when something is finished. I like their tailoring - I've never had an issue with anything they've done for me, and i've probably had a dozen pants and a dozen or more shirts altered over the past couple years. I've brought them stuff, and needed it "in a hurry," and they've gone out of the way to make it happen. I recommend them to all my friends, and now happy to on yelp as well. read more

As you can see it's been about a month since my first post.; while I'm still happy with my choice to bring my clothes to Stephen, it must be noted that if you have an intense deadline, I suggest somewhere else. Or maybe because I didn't have a deadline, he's taking his time for more urgent customers? Well anyways, it's been well over a month since I dropped my clothes off and I currently have one of the 15 or so pieces. My suit jacket came out absolutely perfect but the two pants he thought were ready needed more work. He was extremely helpful and didn't make any issue about the need for more alterations. Just no. Maybe they do a decent job on men's clothes or on a simple pants hem, but Ladies: DO NOT take a dress to this place!!! I brought my very simple reception dress here as I wanted the lining to be extended to the floor rather than stopping at mid-thigh (looked strange in lighting and wouldn't have photographed well). While they told me this was a straightforward job, when I got the dress back it was SO wrong in every single way. I could have done a better job at putting in a lining MYSELF. It puffed out from a slit in the leg, had visible seams where they haphazardly attached it to the original lining, and was completely unwearable, even after they had kept it for THREE WEEKS! I had to take the dress over to Green and Blue where they shook their heads in disbelief at the work had been done and put a proper lining in - should have gone to them first! read more

Williams the Tailor did a great job altering almost every aspect of a DVF dress I brought in for only $30. He was very professional and explained what he was going to do to make the dress fit better. He was able to make a couple of my dresses fit a little better in the waist, but every skirt and pair of pants I've brought in to be tailored has left me unsatisfied. I was searching for a tailor who could alter a very expensive suit. I found him through Yelp. I was immediately impressed by Stephen and his crew. Stephen explained to me why the suit didn't fit correctly and what he could do to make it fit right and to shape it. I immediately felt comfortable that this guy is a craftsmen and he loves what he does. He did a beautiful job with the suit. Next I brought him a blazer, which he explained was just too big and not worth what he would charge to alter the jacket, great a business owner who was looking out for the client and not for his own pocket. I next brought him pants to shorten. Every time he did the work when it was promised and at the price promised. More over, every time I bring something in it is a "teaching moment" as he explains how clothes should fit. There are a few people with poor reviews of this man, but I can't speak to them, all that I can say is I HIGHLY recommend him. read more

This is my first time using a tailor, so I really don't know what I should have expected. The tailor is very nice and was able to do most of what I needed him to do to my bridesmaids dress. Though I have to say that when I tried it on again after getting it home, I realized that there were some areas that did not fit as well as they should have (arm area). I think he (and I) was so focused on getting the major aspects of the fit fixed, that the details were forgotten. It was pretty expensive as well (but again, didn't know what to expect). I had some pretty major alterations done, so overall I was happy and would probably try them again for smaller alterations. read more

Bought a pair of Diesel men's jeans online. At first they fit, but with wearing the waist stretched. I was afraid taking them in would destroy the Diesel look, but these guys did a great job. You can't tell anything was done (the spacing of the belt loops in back has not changed). Very reasonable. In the past these guys have done a beautiful job tapering a heavy leather jacket. read more

I gave these guys one of a button down of mine that I really like but was a bit too big in the sides and sleeves. For $20 they tapered the sides and upper sleeves and had it back to me in about a week. It fits perfectly. They're really nice guys and seem really knowledgable about men's clothing. I give up on Stephen the Tailor. His prices are OUTRAGEOUS, even for DC (it cost me over $120 just to have 2 pairs of pants taken in, I might as well have bought new pants) They also ALWAYS take FOREVER to find my clothes upon pick-up. I get the sense that they are extremely disorgnaized. I'm often left standing at the counter for a minimum of 5 minutes when I go to pick up my items. The tailoring itself is fine, but my hems always come out too short. And he rarely pins me correctly on the first try. DON'T come here. If you're looking for a good tailor in DC, go to VIP Custom Tailoring at 12th and G. Their prices are much more reasonable and they do a completely stellar job. read more

Bought the dress I planned to get married in online from RueLaLa. Great fitted sheath dress but too tight around the ribcage. The question: could this be altered or did I need to keep looking? Took it into Stephen the Tailor two weeks before the wedding and asked for an absolute no-bullshit answer about whether he could make it fit and he assured me he could. Held my breath and returned a week later and he had made it fit perfectly. Then we agreed that it needed to be taken up and inch or so and he did that within a few days. Total cost was $75. NEVER GO HERE! I took in two dresses for minor alterations and walked out with a $95 bill. Then the dresses were not ready on the day they said. When I finally got the dresses back, they messed up BOTH dresses. The first was six inches too short with a crooked hem. They did not apologize and told me if I bought another dress they would hem the new one! I wanted a refund, they said they would just try and re-alater the ruined one (which was already beyond repair). Before the second fiiting, and without asking, they put another panel in the dress making it completely un-wearable (two sizes too small and hideous). They would not even discuss a refund until my boyfriend went with me and demanded that they re-imburse me for the dress and tailoring. After the horrible experience, I expected at least some kind of apology and or reson to go back, yet was given none. I understand mistakes, but messing up two dresses is beyond bad especially coupled with a complete lack of customer service and negative attitude. read more

If you had asked me a few weeks ago this place would have gotten a five star rating from me. But my most recent experience drastically changed my opinion. I requested a simple patch job for a pair of pants. They had done the exact same thing for another pair of pants and it turned out beautifully. This time, had to redo my pants three times before finally announcing that if I wasn't happy I could take my pants elsewhere. The first time they admitted to putting the patch in the wrong place. The second time, after the patch was a completely different color than my pants, Stephen claimed it was my fault for not explaining more clearly what I wanted. Because everyone wants light grey patches on black pants. Also, the edges of the patch were unfinished and not flush with the pants. Stephen said they would offer me a discount, but would still make me pay for the work, even thought it had to be redone twice. The third time, the patches were uneven and still a different color than the pants. When I asked why the patch matched my pants perfectly last time, Stephen said they had to use whatever scraps they have hanging around and they can't guarantee a patch the same color as your pants. This would have been helpful information to have in advance. I am very disappointed with my experience, since I've been so happy with their work in the past. I know they have multiple tailors working there, so perhaps its just luck of the draw. Ironically, Stephen, the owner of the shop, seems to be the one you should avoid. read more
